Minimizing Age of Information in Cognitive Radio-based IoT Systems: Underlay or Overlay?

We consider a cognitive radio-based Internet-of-Things (CR-IoT) network consisting of one primary IoT (PIoT) system and one secondary IoT (SIoT) system. The IoT devices of both the PIoT and the SIoT respectively monitor one physical process and send randomly generated status updates to their associated access points (APs). The timeliness of the status updates is important as the systems are interested in the latest condition (e.g., temperature, speed and position) of the IoT device. In this context, two natural questions arise: (1) How to characterize the timeliness of the status updates in CR-IoT systems? (2) Which scheme, overlay or underlay, is better in terms of the timeliness of the status updates. To answer these two questions, we adopt a new performance metric, named the age of information (AoI). We analyze the average peak AoI of the PIoT and the SIoT for overlay and underlay schemes, respectively. Simple asymptotic expressions of the average peak AoI are also derived when the PIoT operates at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Based on the asymptotic expressions, we characterize a critical generation rate of the PIoT system, which can determine the superiority of overlay and underlay schemes in terms of the average peak AoI of the SIoT. Numerical results validate the theoretical analysis and uncover that the overlay and underlay schemes can outperform each other in terms of the average peak AoI of the SIoT for different system setups.

On the Age of Information of Short-Packet Communications with Packet Management

In this paper, we consider a point-to-point wireless communication system. The source monitors a physical process and generates status update packets according to a Poisson process. The packets are transmitted to the destination by using finite blocklength coding to update the status (e.g., temperature, speed, position) of the monitored process. In some applications, such as real-time monitoring and tracking, the timeliness of the status updates is critical since the users are interested in the latest condition of the process. The timeliness of the status updates can be reflected by a recently proposed metric, termed the age of information (AoI). We focus on the packet management policies for the considered system. Specifically, the preemption and discard of status updates are important to decrease the AoI. For example, it is meaningless to transmit stale status updates when a new status update is generated. We propose three packet management schemes in the transmission between the source and the destination, namely non-preemption (NP), preemption (PR) and retransmission (RT) schemes. We derive closed-form expressions of the average AoI for the proposed three schemes. Based on the derived analytical expressions of the average AoI, we further minimize the average AoI by optimizing the packet blocklength for each status update. Simulation results are provided to validate our theoretical analysis, which further show that the proposed schemes can outperform each other for different system setups, and the proposed schemes considerably outperform the existing ones without packet management at medium to high generation rate.

Interference Exploitation 1-Bit Massive MIMO Precoding: A Partial Branch-and-Bound Solution with Near-Optimal Performance

In this paper, we focus on 1-bit precoding approaches for downlink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where we exploit the concept of constructive interference (CI). For both PSK and QAM signaling, we firstly formulate the optimization problem that maximizes the CI effect subject to the requirement of the 1-bit transmit signals. We then mathematically prove that, when employing the CI formulation and relaxing the 1-bit constraint, the majority of the transmit signals already satisfy the 1-bit formulation. Building upon this important observation, we propose a 1-bit precoding approach that further improves the performance of the conventional 1-bit CI precoding via a partial branch-and-bound (P-BB) process, where the BB procedure is performed only for the entries that do not comply with the 1-bit requirement. This operation allows a significant complexity reduction compared to the fully-BB (F-BB) process, and enables the BB framework to be applicable to the complex massive MIMO scenarios. We further develop an alternative 1-bit scheme through an `Ordered Partial Sequential Update' (OPSU) process that allows an additional complexity reduction. Numerical results show that both proposed 1-bit precoding methods exhibit a significant signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain for the error rate performance, especially for higher-order modulations.

A Learning-Based Two-Stage Spectrum Sharing Strategy with Multiple Primary Transmit Power Levels

Multi-parameter cognition in a cognitive radio network (CRN) provides a more thorough understanding of the radio environments, and could potentially lead to far more intelligent and efficient spectrum usage for a secondary user. In this paper, we investigate the multi-parameter cognition problem for a CRN where the primary transmitter (PT) radiates multiple transmit power levels, and propose a learning-based two-stage spectrum sharing strategy. We first propose a data-driven/machine learning based multi-level spectrum sensing scheme, including the spectrum learning (Stage I) and prediction (the first part in Stage II). This fully blind sensing scheme does not require any prior knowledge of the PT power characteristics. Then, based on a novel normalized power level alignment metric, we propose two prediction-transmission structures, namely periodic and non-periodic, for spectrum access (the second part in Stage II), which enable the secondary transmitter (ST) to closely follow the PT power level variation. The periodic structure features a fixed prediction interval, while the non-periodic one dynamically determines the interval with a proposed reinforcement learning algorithm to further improve the alignment metric. Finally, we extend the prediction-transmission structure to an online scenario, where the number of PT power levels might change as a consequence of PT adapting to the environment fluctuation or quality of service variation. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in various scenarios.

Interference Exploitation via Symbol-Level Precoding: Overview, State-of-the-Art and Future Directions

Interference is traditionally viewed as a performance limiting factor in wireless communication systems, which is to be minimized or mitigated. Nevertheless, a recent line of work has shown that by manipulating the interfering signals such that they add up constructively at the receiver side, known interference can be made beneficial and further improve the system performance in a variety of wireless scenarios, achieved by symbol-level precoding (SLP). This paper aims to provide a tutorial on interference exploitation techniques from the perspective of precoding design in a multi-antenna wireless communication system, by beginning with the classification of constructive interference (CI) and destructive interference (DI). The definition for CI is presented and the corresponding mathematical characterization is formulated for popular modulation types, based on which optimization-based precoding techniques are discussed. In addition, the extension of CI precoding to other application scenarios as well as for hardware efficiency is also described. Proof-of-concept testbeds are demonstrated for the potential practical implementation of CI precoding, and finally a list of open problems and practical challenges are presented to inspire and motivate further research directions in this area.

Beam Allocation for Millimeter-Wave MIMO Tracking Systems

In this paper, we propose a new beam allocation strategy aiming to maximize the average successful tracking probability (ASTP) of time-varying millimeter-wave MIMO systems. In contrast to most existing works that employ one transmitting-receiving (Tx-Rx) beam pair once only in each training period, we investigate a more general framework, where the Tx-Rx beam pairs are allowed to be used repeatedly to improve the received signal powers in specific directions. In the case of orthogonal Tx-Rx beam pairs, a power-based estimator is employed to track the time-varying AoA and AoD of the channel, and the resulting training beam pair sequence design problem is formulated as an integer nonlinear programming (I-NLP) problem. By dividing the feasible region into a set of subregions, the formulated I-NLP is decomposed into a series of concave sub I-NLPs, which can be solved by recursively invoking a nonlinear branch-and-bound algorithm. To reduce the computational cost, we relax the integer constraints of each sub I-NLP and obtain a low-complexity solution via solving the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions of their relaxed problems. For the case when the Tx-Rx beam pairs are overlapped in the angular space, we estimate the updated AoA and AoD via an orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm. Moreover, since no explicit expression for the ASTP exists for the OMP-based estimator, we derive a closed-form lower bound of the ASTP, based on which a favorable beam pair allocation strategy can be obtained. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed beam allocation strategy over existing benchmarks.

Deep Learning for Hybrid 5G Services in Mobile Edge Computing Systems: Learn from a Digital Twin

In this work, we consider a mobile edge computing system with both ultra-reliable and low-latency communications services and delay tolerant services. We aim to minimize the normalized energy consumption, defined as the energy consumption per bit, by optimizing user association, resource allocation, and offloading probabilities subject to the quality-of-service requirements. The user association is managed by the mobility management entity (MME), while resource allocation and offloading probabilities are determined by each access point (AP). We propose a deep learning (DL) architecture, where a digital twin of the real network environment is used to train the DL algorithm off-line at a central server. From the pre-trained deep neural network (DNN), the MME can obtain user association scheme in a real-time manner. Considering that real networks are not static, the digital twin monitors the variation of real networks and updates the DNN accordingly. For a given user association scheme, we propose an optimization algorithm to find the optimal resource allocation and offloading probabilities at each AP. Simulation results show that our method can achieve lower normalized energy consumption with less computation complexity compared with an existing method and approach to the performance of the global optimal solution.

Cross-layer Design for Mission-Critical IoT in Mobile Edge Computing Systems

In this work, we propose a cross-layer framework for optimizing user association, packet offloading rates, and bandwidth allocation for Mission-Critical Internet-of-Things (MC-IoT) services with short packets in Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) systems, where enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB) services with long packets are considered as background services. To reduce communication delay, the 5th generation new radio is adopted in radio access networks. To avoid long queueing delay for short packets from MC-IoT, Processor-Sharing (PS) servers are deployed at MEC systems, where the service rate of the server is equally allocated to all the packets in the buffer. We derive the distribution of latency experienced by short packets in closed-form, and minimize the overall packet loss probability subject to the end-to-end delay requirement. To solve the non-convex optimization problem, we propose an algorithm that converges to a near optimal solution when the throughput of eMBB services is much higher than MC-IoT services, and extend it into more general scenarios. Furthermore, we derive the optimal solutions in two asymptotic cases: communication or computing is the bottleneck of reliability. Simulation and numerical results validate our analysis and show that the PS server outperforms first-come-first-serve servers.

Real-Time Remote Estimation with Hybrid ARQ in Wireless Networked Control

Real-time remote estimation is critical for mission-critical applications including industrial automation, smart grid and tactile Internet. In this paper, we propose a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ)-based real-time remote estimation framework for linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamic systems. Considering the estimation quality of such a system, there is a fundamental tradeoff between the reliability and freshness of the sensor's measurement transmission. We formulate a new problem to optimize the sensor's online transmission control policy for static and Markov fading channels, which depends on both the current estimation quality of the remote estimator and the current number of retransmissions of the sensor, so as to minimize the long-term remote estimation mean squared error (MSE). This problem is non-trivial. In particular, it is challenging to derive the condition in terms of the communication channel quality and the LTI system parameters, to ensure a bounded long-term estimation MSE. We derive an elegant sufficient condition of the existence of a stationary and deterministic optimal policy that stabilizes the remote estimation system and minimizes the MSE. Also, we prove that the optimal policy has a switching structure, and accordingly derive a low-complexity suboptimal policy. Numerical results show that the proposed optimal policy significantly improves the performance of the remote estimation system compared to the conventional non-HARQ policy.

Robust Hybrid Precoding for Beam Misalignment in Millimeter-Wave Communications

In this paper, we focus on the phenomenon of beam misalignment in Millimeter-wave (mmWave) multi-receiver communication systems, and propose robust hybrid precoding designs that alleviate the performance loss caused by this effect. We consider two distinct design methodologies: I) the synthesis of a `flat mainlobe' beam model which maximizes the minimum effective array gain over the beam misalignment range, and II) the inclusion of the `error statistics' into the design, where the array response incorporating the distribution of the misalignment error is derived. For both design methodologies, we propose a hybrid precoding design that approximates the robust fully-digital precoder, which is obtained via alternating optimization based on the gradient projection (GP) method. We also propose a low-complexity alternative to the GP algorithm based on the least square projection (LSP), and we further deploy a second-stage digital precoder to mitigate any residual inter-receiver interference after the hybrid analog-digital precoding. Numerical results show that the robust hybrid precoding designs can effectively alleviate the performance degradation incurred by beam misalignment.

Hybrid Precoder and Combiner for Imperfect Beam Alignment in mmWave MIMO Systems

In this letter, we aim to design a robust hybrid precoder and combiner against beam misalignment in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. We consider the inclusion of the `error statistics' into the precoder and combiner design, where the array response that incorporates the distribution of the misalignment error is first derived. An iterative algorithm is then proposed to design the robust hybrid precoder and combiner to maximize the array gain in the presence of beam misalignment. To further enhance the spectral efficiency, a second-stage digital precoder and combiner are included to mitigate the inter-stream interference. Numerical results show that the proposed robust hybrid precoder and combiner design can effectively alleviate the performance degradation incurred by beam misalignment.

Towards Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications: Typical Scenarios, Possible Solutions, and Open Issues

Ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) has been considered as one of the three new application scenarios in the \emph{5th Generation} (5G) \emph {New Radio} (NR), where the physical layer design aspects have been specified. With the 5G NR, we can guarantee the reliability and latency in radio access networks. However, for communication scenarios where the transmission involves both radio access and wide area core networks, the delay in radio access networks only contributes to part of the \emph{end-to-end} (E2E) delay. In this paper, we outline the delay components and packet loss probabilities in typical communication scenarios of URLLC, and formulate the constraints on E2E delay and overall packet loss probability. Then, we summarize possible solutions in the physical layer, the link layer, the network layer, and the cross-layer design, respectively. Finally, we discuss the open issues in prediction and communication co-design for URLLC in wide area large scale networks.

Energy Efficient Optimization of Wireless-powered 5G Full Duplex Cellular Networks: A Mean Field Game Approach

This paper studies the power allocation of an ultra-dense cellular network consisting of multiple full-duplex (FD) base stations (BSs) serving a large number of half-duplex (HD) user equipments (UEs) located in a wide geographical area. Each BS consists of a baseband unit (BBU) that is responsible for signal processing and base station control, and a radio remote unit (RRU) that corresponds to a radio transceiver remotely built closer to the UEs. We consider a wireless-powered cellular network in which the BBU can periodically charge the RRU. We model the energy efficiency and coverage optimization problem for this network as a mean field game. We consider the weighted energy efficiency of the BS as the main performance metrics and evaluate the optimal strategy that can be adopted by the FD BSs in an ultra-dense network setting. Based on the interference and network energy efficiency models of the mean field game theory, Nash equilibrium of our proposed game is derived. Utilizing solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) and Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equations, a new power transmission strategy is developed for the BSs to optimize the energy efficiency of 5G cellular networks with full duplex transmissions. Simulation results indicate that the proposed strategy not only improves the energy efficiency but also ensures the average network coverage probability converges to a stable level.

Noncoherent Multiuser Massive SIMO for Low-Latency Industrial IoT Communications

In this paper, we consider a multiuser massive single-input multiple-output (SIMO) enabled Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) communication system. To reduce the latency and overhead caused by channel estimation, we assume that only the large-scale fading coefficients are available. We employ a noncoherent maximum-likelihood (ML) detector at the receiver side which does not need the instantaneous channel state information (CSI). For such a massive SIMO system, we present a new design framework to assure that each transmitted signal matrix can be uniquely determined in the noise-free case and be reliably estimated in noisy cases. The key idea is to utilize a new concept called the uniquely decomposable constellation group (UDCG) based on the practically used quadrature amplitude modulation~(QAM) constellation. To improve the average error performance when the antenna array size is scaled up, we propose a max-min Kullback-Leibler (KL) distance design by carrying out optimization over the transmitted power and the sub-constellation assignment. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed design outperforms significantly the existing max-min Euclidean distance based method in terms of error performance. Moreover, our proposed approach also has a better error performance than the conventional coherent zero-forcing (ZF) receiver with orthogonal training for cell edge users.

Noncoherent and Non-orthogonal Massive SIMO for Critical Industrial IoT Communications

Towards the realization of ultra-reliable low-latency wireless communications required in critical industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications, this paper presents a new noncoherent and non-orthogonal massive single-input multiple-output (SIMO) framework, in which a large number of antennas are deployed to provide high spatial diversity so as to enable ultra-reliable communications, and noncoherent transmission and non-orthogonal multiple access techniques are applied to effectively reduce the latency at the physical and data link layers, respectively. A two-user IIoT system is considered to elaborate the key design principle of our framework, in which two controlled nodes (CNs) transmit their data to a common managing node (MN) on the same time-frequency resource block, and the MN implements the noncoherent maximum likelihood detector to recover the transmitted symbols of both CNs from the received sum signal. We analyze the error performance of the considered system and then minimize the system error probability by jointly designing the constellations of both CNs. Simulation results show that our design has lower error probability than existing designs.

To Retransmit or Not: Real-Time Remote Estimation in Wireless Networked Control

Real-time remote estimation is critical for mission-critical applications including industrial automation, smart grid, and the tactile Internet. When a failed transmission occurs, the sensor can either retransmit the previous old measurement such that the receiver can obtain a more reliable old measurement, or transmit a new but less reliable measurement. To design the optimal decision, we formulate a new problem to optimize the sensor's online decision policy, i.e., to retransmit or not, depending on both the current estimation quality of the remote estimator and the current number of retransmissions of the sensor, so as to minimize the long-term remote estimation mean-squared error (MSE). This problem is non-trivial. In particular, it is not clear what the condition is in terms of the communication channel quality and the LTI system parameters, to ensure that the long-term estimation MSE can be bounded. We give a sufficient condition of the existence of a stationary and deterministic optimal policy that stabilizes the remote estimation system and minimizes the MSE. Also, we prove that the optimal policy has a switching structure, and derive a low-complexity suboptimal policy. Our numerical results show that the proposed optimal policy notably improves the performance of the remote estimation system compared to the conventional non-HARQ policy.

Segmentation-Discarding Ordered-Statistic Decoding for Linear Block Codes

In this paper, we propose an efficient reliability based segmentation-discarding decoding (SDD) algorithm for short block-length codes. A novel segmentation-discarding technique is proposed along with the stopping rule to significantly reduce the decoding complexity without a significant performance degradation compared to ordered statistics decoding (OSD). In the proposed decoder, the list of test error patterns (TEPs) is divided into several segments according to carefully selected boundaries and every segment is checked separately during the reprocessing stage. Decoding is performed under the constraint of the discarding rule and stopping rule. Simulations results for different codes show that our proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the decoding complexity compared to the existing OSD algorithms in literature.

Multiplexing More Streams in the MU-MISO Downlink by Interference Exploitation Precoding

In this paper, we study the interference exploitation precoding for the scenario where the number of streams simultaneously transmitted by the base station (BS) is larger than that of transmit antennas at the BS, and derive the optimal precoding structure by employing the pseudo inverse. We show that the optimal pre-scaling vector is equal to a linear combination of the right singular vectors that correspond to zero singular values of the coefficient matrix. By formulating the dual problem, the optimal precoding matrix can be expressed as a function of the dual variables in a closed form, and an equivalent quadratic programming (QP) formulation is further derived for computational complexity reduction. Numerical results validate our analysis and demonstrate significant performance improvements for interference exploitation precoding for the considered scenario.
