Dynamic critical exponents of Swendsen-Wang and Wolff algorithms by nonequilibrium relaxation

With a nonequilibrium relaxation method, we calculate the dynamic critical exponent z of the two-dimensional Ising model for the Swendsen-Wang and Wolff algorithms. We examine dynamic relaxation processes following a quench from a disordered or an ordered initial state to the critical temperature T_c, and measure the exponential relaxation time of the system energy. For the Swendsen-Wang algorithm with an ordered or a disordered initial state, and for the Wolff algorithm with an ordered initial state, the exponential relaxation time fits well to a logarithmic size dependence up to a lattice size L=8192. For the Wolff algorithm with a disordered initial state, we obtain an effective dynamic exponent z_exp=1.19(2) up to L=2048. For comparison, we also compute the effective dynamic exponents through the integrated correlation times. In addition, an exact result of the Swendsen-Wang dynamic spectrum of a one-dimension Ising chain is derived.

On effects of regular S=1 dilution of S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains by a quantum Monte Carlo simulation

The effects of regular S=1 dilution of S=1/2 isotropic antiferromagnetic chain are investigated by the quantum Monte Carlo loop/cluster algorithm. Our numerical results show that there are two kinds of ground-state phases which alternate with the variation of $S^1=1$ concentration. When the effective spin of a unit cell is half-integer, the ground state is ferrimagnetic with gapless energy spectrum and the magnetism becomes weaker with decreasing of the $S^1$ concentration $ρ= 1/M$. While it is integer, a non-magnetic ground state with gaped spectrum emerges and the gap gradually becomes narrowed as fitted by a relation of $Δ\approx 1.25\sqrtρ$.

Effects of Contrarians in the Minority Game

We study the effects of the presence of contrarians in an agent-based model of competing populations. Contrarians are common in societies. These contrarians are agents who deliberately prefer to hold an opinion that is contrary to the prevailing idea of the commons or normal agents. Contrarians are introduced within the context of the Minority Game (MG), which is a binary model for an evolving and adaptive population of agents competing for a limited resource. Results of numerical simulations reveal that the average success rate among the agents depends non-monotonically on the fraction $a_{c}$ of contrarians. For small $a_{c}$, the contrarians systematically outperform the normal agents by avoiding the crowd effect and enhance the overall success rate. For high $a_{c}$, the anti-persistent nature of the MG is disturbed and the few normal agents outperform the contrarians. Qualitative discussion and analytic results for the small $a_{c}$ and high $a_{c}$ regimes are also presented, and the crossover behavior between the two regimes is discussed.

Epidemics and Dimensionality in Hierarchical Networks

Epidemiological processes are studied within a recently proposed hierarchical network model using the susceptible-infected-refractory dynamics of an epidemic. Within the network model, a population may be characterized by $H$ independent hierarchies or dimensions, each of which consists of groupings of individuals into layers of subgroups. Detailed numerical simulations reveal that for $H>1$, global spreading results regardless of the degree of homophily of the individuals forming a social circle. For H=1, a transition from global to local spread occurs as the population becomes decomposed into increasingly homophilous groups. Multiple dimensions in classifying individuals (nodes) thus make a society (computer network) highly susceptible to large scale outbreaks of infectious diseases (viruses).

Weighted Scale-Free Networks with Stochastic Weight Assignments

We propose and study a model of weighted scale-free networks incorporating a stochastic scheme for weight assignments to the links, taking into account both the popularity and fitness of a node. As the network grows the weights of links are driven either by the connectivity with probability $p$ or by the fitness with probability $1-p$. Results of numerical simulations show that the total weight associated with a selected node exhibits a power law distribution with an exponent $σ$, the value of which depends on the probability $p$. The exponent $σ$ decreases continuously as $p$ increases. For $p=0$, the total weight distribution displays the same scaling behavior as that of the connectivity distribution with $σ= γ= 3$, where $γ$ is the exponent characterizing the connectivity distribution. An analytical expression for the total weight is derived so as to explain the features observed in the numerical results. Numerical results are also presented for a generalized model with a fitness-dependent link formation mechanism.
