DevelSet: Deep Neural Level Set for Instant Mask Optimization

With the feature size continuously shrinking in advanced technology nodes, mask optimization is increasingly crucial in the conventional design flow, accompanied by an explosive growth in prohibitive computational overhead in optical proximity correction (OPC) methods. Recently, inverse lithography technique (ILT) has drawn significant attention and is becoming prevalent in emerging OPC solutions. However, ILT methods are either time-consuming or in weak performance of mask printability and manufacturability. In this paper, we present DevelSet, a GPU and deep neural network (DNN) accelerated level set OPC framework for metal layer. We first improve the conventional level set-based ILT algorithm by introducing the curvature term to reduce mask complexity and applying GPU acceleration to overcome computational bottlenecks. To further enhance printability and fast iterative convergence, we propose a novel deep neural network delicately designed with level set intrinsic principles to facilitate the joint optimization of DNN and GPU accelerated level set optimizer. Experimental results show that DevelSet framework surpasses the state-of-the-art methods in printability and boost the runtime performance achieving instant level (around 1 second).

A High-Performance Accelerator for Super-Resolution Processing on Embedded GPU

Recent years have witnessed impressive progress in super-resolution (SR) processing. However, its real-time inference requirement sets a challenge not only for the model design but also for the on-chip implementation. In this paper, we implement a full-stack SR acceleration framework on embedded GPU devices. The special dictionary learning algorithm used in SR models was analyzed in detail and accelerated via a novel dictionary selective strategy. Besides, the hardware programming architecture together with the model structure is analyzed to guide the optimal design of computation kernels to minimize the inference latency under the resource constraints. With these novel techniques, the communication and computation bottlenecks in the deep dictionary learning-based SR models are tackled perfectly. The experiments on the edge embedded NVIDIA NX and 2080Ti show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art NVIDIA TensorRT significantly, and can achieve real-time performance.

AdaOPC: A Self-Adaptive Mask Optimization Framework For Real Design Patterns

Optical proximity correction (OPC) is a widely-used resolution enhancement technique (RET) for printability optimization. Recently, rigorous numerical optimization and fast machine learning are the research focus of OPC in both academia and industry, each of which complements the other in terms of robustness or efficiency. We inspect the pattern distribution on a design layer and find that different sub-regions have different pattern complexity. Besides, we also find that many patterns repetitively appear in the design layout, and these patterns may possibly share optimized masks. We exploit these properties and propose a self-adaptive OPC framework to improve efficiency. Firstly we choose different OPC solvers adaptively for patterns of different complexity from an extensible solver pool to reach a speed/accuracy co-optimization. Apart from that, we prove the feasibility of reusing optimized masks for repeated patterns and hence, build a graph-based dynamic pattern library reusing stored masks to further speed up the OPC flow. Experimental results show that our framework achieves substantial improvement in both performance and efficiency.

Towards Real-World Video Denosing: A Practical Video Denosing Dataset and Network

To facilitate video denoising research, we construct a compelling dataset, namely, "Practical Video Denoising Dataset" (PVDD), containing 200 noisy-clean dynamic video pairs in both sRGB and RAW format. Compared with existing datasets consisting of limited motion information, PVDD covers dynamic scenes with varying and natural motion. Different from datasets using primarily Gaussian or Poisson distributions to synthesize noise in the sRGB domain, PVDD synthesizes realistic noise from the RAW domain with a physically meaningful sensor noise model followed by ISP processing. Moreover, we also propose a new video denoising framework, called Recurrent Video Denoising Transformer (RVDT), which can achieve SOTA performance on PVDD and other current video denoising benchmarks. RVDT consists of both spatial and temporal transformer blocks to conduct denoising with long-range operations on the spatial dimension and long-term propagation on the temporal dimension. Especially, RVDT exploits the attention mechanism to implement the bi-directional feature propagation with both implicit and explicit temporal modeling. Extensive experiments demonstrate that 1) models trained on PVDD achieve superior denoising performance on many challenging real-world videos than on models trained on other existing datasets; 2) trained on the same dataset, our proposed RVDT can have better denoising performance than other types of networks.

Rethinking Graph Neural Networks for the Graph Coloring Problem

Graph coloring, a classical and critical NP-hard problem, is the problem of assigning connected nodes as different colors as possible. However, we observe that state-of-the-art GNNs are less successful in the graph coloring problem. We analyze the reasons from two perspectives. First, most GNNs fail to generalize the task under homophily to heterophily, i.e., graphs where connected nodes are assigned different colors. Second, GNNs are bounded by the network depth, making them possible to be a local method, which has been demonstrated to be non-optimal in Maximum Independent Set (MIS) problem. In this paper, we focus on the aggregation-combine GNNs (AC-GNNs), a popular class of GNNs. We first define the power of AC-GNNs in the coloring problem as the capability to assign nodes different colors. The definition is different with previous one that is based on the assumption of homophily. We identify node pairs that AC-GNNs fail to discriminate. Furthermore, we show that any AC-GNN is a local coloring method, and any local coloring method is non-optimal by exploring the limits of local methods over sparse random graphs, thereby demonstrating the non-optimality of AC-GNNs due to its local property. We then prove the positive correlation between model depth and its coloring power. Moreover, we discuss the color equivariance of graphs to tackle some practical constraints such as the pre-fixing constraints. Following the discussions above, we summarize a series of rules a series of rules that make a GNN color equivariant and powerful in the coloring problem. Then, we propose a simple AC-GNN variation satisfying these rules. We empirically validate our theoretical findings and demonstrate that our simple model substantially outperforms state-of-the-art heuristic algorithms in both quality and runtime.

DSGN++: Exploiting Visual-Spatial Relation for Stereo-based 3D Detectors

Camera-based 3D object detectors are welcome due to their wider deployment and lower price than LiDAR sensors. We first revisit the prior stereo detector DSGN for its stereo volume construction ways for representing both 3D geometry and semantics. We polish the stereo modeling and propose the advanced version, DSGN++, aiming to enhance effective information flow throughout the 2D-to-3D pipeline in three main aspects. First, to effectively lift the 2D information to stereo volume, we propose depth-wise plane sweeping (DPS) that allows denser connections and extracts depth-guided features. Second, for grasping differently spaced features, we present a novel stereo volume -- Dual-view Stereo Volume (DSV) that integrates front-view and top-view features and reconstructs sub-voxel depth in the camera frustum. Third, as the foreground region becomes less dominant in 3D space, we propose a multi-modal data editing strategy -- Stereo-LiDAR Copy-Paste, which ensures cross-modal alignment and improves data efficiency. Without bells and whistles, extensive experiments in various modality setups on the popular KITTI benchmark show that our method consistently outperforms other camera-based 3D detectors for all categories. Eventor: An Efficient Event-Based Monocular Multi-View Stereo Accelerator on FPGA Platform

Event cameras are bio-inspired vision sensors that asynchronously represent pixel-level brightness changes as event streams. Event-based monocular multi-view stereo (EMVS) is a technique that exploits the event streams to estimate semi-dense 3D structure with known trajectory. It is a critical task for event-based monocular SLAM. However, the required intensive computation workloads make it challenging for real-time deployment on embedded platforms. In this paper, Eventor is proposed as a fast and efficient EMVS accelerator by realizing the most critical and time-consuming stages including event back-projection and volumetric ray-counting on FPGA. Highly paralleled and fully pipelined processing elements are specially designed via FPGA and integrated with the embedded ARM as a heterogeneous system to improve the throughput and reduce the memory footprint. Meanwhile, the EMVS algorithm is reformulated to a more hardware-friendly manner by rescheduling, approximate computing and hybrid data quantization. Evaluation results on DAVIS dataset show that Eventor achieves up to $24\times$ improvement in energy efficiency compared with Intel i5 CPU platform.

Parametric Contrastive Learning

In this paper, we propose Parametric Contrastive Learning (PaCo) to tackle long-tailed recognition. Based on theoretical analysis, we observe supervised contrastive loss tends to bias on high-frequency classes and thus increases the difficulty of imbalanced learning. We introduce a set of parametric class-wise learnable centers to rebalance from an optimization perspective. Further, we analyze our PaCo loss under a balanced setting. Our analysis demonstrates that PaCo can adaptively enhance the intensity of pushing samples of the same class close as more samples are pulled together with their corresponding centers and benefit hard example learning. Experiments on long-tailed CIFAR, ImageNet, Places, and iNaturalist 2018 manifest the new state-of-the-art for long-tailed recognition. On full ImageNet, models trained with PaCo loss surpass supervised contrastive learning across various ResNet backbones, e.g., our ResNet-200 achieves 81.8% top-1 accuracy. Our code is available at https://github.com/dvlab-research/Parametric-Contrastive-Learning.

Conditional Temporal Variational AutoEncoder for Action Video Prediction

To synthesize a realistic action sequence based on a single human image, it is crucial to model both motion patterns and diversity in the action video. This paper proposes an Action Conditional Temporal Variational AutoEncoder (ACT-VAE) to improve motion prediction accuracy and capture movement diversity. ACT-VAE predicts pose sequences for an action clips from a single input image. It is implemented as a deep generative model that maintains temporal coherence according to the action category with a novel temporal modeling on latent space. Further, ACT-VAE is a general action sequence prediction framework. When connected with a plug-and-play Pose-to-Image (P2I) network, ACT-VAE can synthesize image sequences. Extensive experiments bear out our approach can predict accurate pose and synthesize realistic image sequences, surpassing state-of-the-art approaches. Compared to existing methods, ACT-VAE improves model accuracy and preserves diversity.

Linking Health News to Research Literature

Accurately linking news articles to scientific research works is a critical component in a number of applications, such as measuring the social impact of a research work and detecting inaccuracies or distortions in science news. Although the lack of links between news and literature has been a challenge in these applications, it is a relatively unexplored research problem. In this paper we designed and evaluated a new approach that consists of (1) augmenting latest named-entity recognition techniques to extract various metadata, and (2) designing a new elastic search engine that can facilitate the use of enriched metadata queries. To evaluate our approach, we constructed two datasets of paired news articles and research papers: one is used for training models to extract metadata, and the other for evaluation. Our experiments showed that the new approach performed significantly better than a baseline approach used by altmetric.com (0.89 vs 0.32 in terms of top-1 accuracy). To further demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach, we also conducted a study on 37,600 health-related press releases published on EurekAlert!, which showed that our approach was able to identify the corresponding research papers with a top-1 accuracy of at least 0.97.

Although the application of machine learning (ML) techniques in electronic design automation (EDA) can trace its history back to the 90s, the recent breakthrough of ML and the increasing complexity of EDA tasks have aroused more interests in incorporating ML to solve EDA tasks. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of existing ML for EDA studies, organized following the EDA hierarchy.

Routing Towards Discriminative Power of Class Capsules

Capsule networks are recently proposed as an alternative to modern neural network architectures. Neurons are replaced with capsule units that represent specific features or entities with normalized vectors or matrices. The activation of lower layer capsules affects the behavior of the following capsules via routing links that are constructed during training via certain routing algorithms. We discuss the routing-by-agreement scheme in dynamic routing algorithm which, in certain cases, leads the networks away from optimality. To obtain better and faster convergence, we propose a routing algorithm that incorporates a regularized quadratic programming problem which can be solved efficiently. Particularly, the proposed routing algorithm targets directly on the discriminative power of class capsules making the correct decision on input instances. We conduct experiments on MNIST, MNIST-Fashion, and CIFAR-10 and show competitive classification results compared to existing capsule networks.

DAMO: Deep Agile Mask Optimization for Full Chip Scale

Continuous scaling of the VLSI system leaves a great challenge on manufacturing and optical proximity correction (OPC) is widely applied in conventional design flow for manufacturability optimization. Traditional techniques conducted OPC by leveraging a lithography model and suffered from prohibitive computational overhead, and mostly focused on optimizing a single clip without addressing how to tackle the full chip. In this paper, we present DAMO, a high performance and scalable deep learning-enabled OPC system for full chip scale. It is an end-to-end mask optimization paradigm which contains a Deep Lithography Simulator (DLS) for lithography modeling and a Deep Mask Generator (DMG) for mask pattern generation. Moreover, a novel layout splitting algorithm customized for DAMO is proposed to handle the full chip OPC problem. Extensive experiments show that DAMO outperforms the state-of-the-art OPC solutions in both academia and industrial commercial toolkit.

Tensor Low-Rank Reconstruction for Semantic Segmentation

Context information plays an indispensable role in the success of semantic segmentation. Recently, non-local self-attention based methods are proved to be effective for context information collection. Since the desired context consists of spatial-wise and channel-wise attentions, 3D representation is an appropriate formulation. However, these non-local methods describe 3D context information based on a 2D similarity matrix, where space compression may lead to channel-wise attention missing. An alternative is to model the contextual information directly without compression. However, this effort confronts a fundamental difficulty, namely the high-rank property of context information. In this paper, we propose a new approach to model the 3D context representations, which not only avoids the space compression but also tackles the high-rank difficulty. Here, inspired by tensor canonical-polyadic decomposition theory (i.e, a high-rank tensor can be expressed as a combination of rank-1 tensors.), we design a low-rank-to-high-rank context reconstruction framework (i.e, RecoNet). Specifically, we first introduce the tensor generation module (TGM), which generates a number of rank-1 tensors to capture fragments of context feature. Then we use these rank-1 tensors to recover the high-rank context features through our proposed tensor reconstruction module (TRM). Extensive experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art on various public datasets. Additionally, our proposed method has more than 100 times less computational cost compared with conventional non-local-based methods.

Dive Deeper Into Box for Object Detection

Anchor free methods have defined the new frontier in state-of-the-art object detection researches where accurate bounding box estimation is the key to the success of these methods. However, even the bounding box has the highest confidence score, it is still far from perfect at localization. To this end, we propose a box reorganization method(DDBNet), which can dive deeper into the box for more accurate localization. At the first step, drifted boxes are filtered out because the contents in these boxes are inconsistent with target semantics. Next, the selected boxes are broken into boundaries, and the well-aligned boundaries are searched and grouped into a sort of optimal boxes toward tightening instances more precisely. Experimental results show that our method is effective which leads to state-of-the-art performance for object detection.

Attacking Split Manufacturing from a Deep Learning Perspective

The notion of integrated circuit split manufacturing which delegates the front-end-of-line (FEOL) and back-end-of-line (BEOL) parts to different foundries, is to prevent overproduction, piracy of the intellectual property (IP), or targeted insertion of hardware Trojans by adversaries in the FEOL facility. In this work, we challenge the security promise of split manufacturing by formulating various layout-level placement and routing hints as vector- and image-based features. We construct a sophisticated deep neural network which can infer the missing BEOL connections with high accuracy. Compared with the publicly available network-flow attack [1], for the same set of ISCAS-85 benchmarks, we achieve 1.21X accuracy when splitting on M1 and 1.12X accuracy when splitting on M3 with less than 1% running time.

TimingCamouflage+: Netlist Security Enhancement with Unconventional Timing (with Appendix)

With recent advances in reverse engineering, attackers can reconstruct a netlist to counterfeit chips by opening the die and scanning all layers of authentic chips. This relatively easy counterfeiting is made possible by the use of the standard simple clocking scheme, where all combinational blocks function within one clock period, so that a netlist of combinational logic gates and flip-flops is sufficient to duplicate a design. In this paper, we propose to invalidate the assumption that a netlist completely represents the function of a circuit with unconventional timing. With the introduced wave-pipelining paths, attackers have to capture gate and interconnect delays during reverse engineering, or to test a huge number of combinational paths to identify the wave-pipelining paths. To hinder the test-based attack, we construct false paths with wave-pipelining to increase the counterfeiting challenge. Experimental results confirm that wave-pipelining true paths and false paths can be constructed in benchmark circuits successfully with only a negligible cost, thus thwarting the potential attack techniques.
