The Spectator Electromagnetic Effect on Charged Pion Spectra in Peripheral Ultrarelativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

We estimate the electromagnetic effect of the spectator charge on the momentum spectra of $π^+$ and $π^-$ produced in peripheral Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energies. We find that the effect is large and results in strongly varying structures in the $x_F$ dependence of the $π^+/π^-$ ratio, especially at low transverse momenta where a deep valley in the above ratio is predicted at $x_F \sim$ 0.15 -- 0.20. It appears that the effect depends on initial conditions. Thus, it provides new information on the space and time evolution of the non-perturbative pion creation process.

Diffractive Double-Elastic Production of $η$' and $η_c$ in the $p p \to p X p$ Reaction

I discuss double-diffractive (double-elastic) production of the $η'$ and $η_c$ mesons in the $pp \to p X p$ reaction within the formalism of unintegrated gluon distribution functions (UGDF). The contribution of $γ^* γ^* \to η'$ fusion is estimated. The distributions in the Feynman $x_F$ (or rapidity), transferred four-momenta squared between initial and final protons ($t_1$, $t_2$) and azimuthal angle difference between outgoing protons ($Φ$) are calculated and discussed. The results are compared with the WA102 data. Predictions at higher energies are presented.

Pion and Kaon Production in Nucleon - Nucleon Collisions

Inclusive cross section for pion production in proton - proton collisions are calculated based on unintegrated parton distribution functions (uPDFs). In addition to purely gluonic terms the present approach includes also quark degrees of freedom. Phenomenological fragmentation functions from the literature are used. The new mechanisms are responsible for $π^+$ - $π^-$ asymmetry. In contrast to standard collinear approach, application of 2 $\to$ 1 $k_t$ - factorization approach can be extended towards much lower transverse momenta, both at mid and forward rapidity region. The results of the calculation are compared with SPS and RHIC data.

Charmed Meson Production in Proton - (ANTI)PROTON Collisions

We discuss and compare different approaches to include gluon transverse momenta for heavy quark-antiquark pair and meson production. The results are illustrated with the help of different unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDF) from the literature. We compare results obtained with on-shell and off-shell matrix elements and kinematics. The results are compared with recent experimental results of the CDF collaboration.

Direct Photon Production in $pp$ and $p \bar p$ Collisions at High Energies

The invariant cross sections for direct photon production in hadron-hadron collisions are calculated for several initial energies (SPS, ISR, S$p \bar p$S, RHIC, Tevatron, LHC) including initial parton transverse momenta within the formalism of unintegrated parton distributions (UPDF). Kwieciński UPDFs provide very good description of all world data, especially at SPS and ISR energies. Inclusion of the QCD evolution effects and especially their effect on initial parton transverse momenta allowed to solve the long-standing problem of understanding the low energy and low transverse momentum data.

Unintegrated gluon distributions and Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions

Inclusive cross sections for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions are calculated in the formalism of unintegrated gluon distributions (UGDF). Different UGDF from the literature are used. Although they were constructed in order to describe the HERA deep-inelastic scattering $F_2$ data, they lead to surprisingly different results for Higgs production. We present both two-dimensional invariant cross section as a function of Higgs rapidity and transverse momentum, as well as corresponding projections on rapidity or transverse momentum. We quantify the differences between different UGD's by applying different cuts on interrelations between transverse momentum of Higgs and transverse momenta of both fusing gluons. We focus on large rapidity region. The interplay of the gluon-gluon fusion and weak-boson fusion in rapidity and transverse momentum is discussed. We find that above $p_T \sim$ 50-100 GeV the weak-gauge-boson fusion dominates over gluon-gluon fusion.

Unintegrated parton distributions and pion production in $pp$ collisions at SPS and RHIC energies

Inclusive cross sections for pion production in $pp$ collisions are calculated for the first time fully based on unintegrated gluon, quark and antiquark distributions (uPDF). We use recently developed Kwieciński uPDF's and different phenomenological fragmentation functions (FF) from the literature. In addition to the $gg \to g$ diagram we include also $g q \to q$ and $q g \to q$ diagrams for inclusive parton production. The cross section for pions is obtained then by convoluting the inclusive parton distributions and FFs. Applications for SPS and RHIC are shown.

Unintegrated parton distributions and pion production in pp collisions at RHIC's energies

We compare results of $2 \to 1$ $k_t$-factorization approach with Kwieciński unintegrated parton distributions and the standard collinear factorization approach at RHIC and slightly smaller energies. Our approach contains only one free parameter responsible for internal parton motion in nucleons. In contrast to recent works in the literature our $k_t$-factorization approach includes also quark degrees of freedom in addition to purely gluonic terms. Both mid and forward rapidity regions are considered. We discuss uncertainties due to fragmentation functions. In general, the $k_t$-factorization approach gives a better description of the $p_t \sim$ 1 -- 4 GeV region both at mid and forward rapidity regions. Our approach leads to asymmetry in the production of $π^+$ and $π^-$, very similar to the one observed very recently by the BRAHMS collaboration.

Resolved photon and multi-component model for $γ^*$p and $γ^* γ^*$ scattering at high energies

We generalize our previous model for $γ^* p$ scattering to $γγ$ scattering. In the latter case the number of components naturally grows. When using the model parameters from our previous $γ^* p$ analysis the model cross section for $γγ$ scattering is larger than the corresponding LEP2 experimental data by more than a factor of two. However, performing a new simultaneous fit to $γ^* p$ and $γγ$ total cross section we can find an optimal set of parameters to describe both processes. We propose new measures of factorization breaking for $γ^* γ^*$ collisions and present results for our new model.

Diffractive photoproduction of opposite-charge pseudoscalar meson pairs at high energies

We calculate the cross section for diffractive photoproduction of opposite-charge pseudoscalar meson pairs $M^+M^- = π^+ π^-$, $K^+ K^-$, $D^+ D^-$ and $B^+ B^-$ in a broad range of center-of-mass energies relevant for GlueX/Hall D, FOCUS, COMPASS and HERA experiments. In the case of $π^+π^-$ production we find that the interference of the $ρ^0$ resonance and the two-pion continuum leads to a considerable deformation of the shape of $ρ^0$ in agreement with the data from the ZEUS collaboration. We also discuss the spectral shape of the $ρ^0$ as a function of the momentum transfer and the contribution of higher partial waves to the $π^+π^-$ mass spectrum. We predict a sizeable energy-dependent forward-backward asymmetry in the Gottfried-Jackson frame. For the heavy meson production we find that the cross section for diffractive production increases much slower than the one for open charm or bottom production. We discuss lower and upper limits for the cross sections for diffractive production of $D^+ D^-$ and $B^+ B^-$ pairs, which we find can be as large as 10% of the open flavor production.

$π^+ - π^-$ Asymmetry and the Neutron Skin in Heavy Nuclei

In heavy nuclei the spatial distribution of protons and neutrons is different. At CERN SPS energies production of $π^+$ and $π^-$ differs for $pp$, $pn$, $np$ and $nn$ scattering. These two facts lead to an impact parameter dependence of the $π^+$ to $π^-$ ratio in $^{208}Pb + ^{208}Pb$ collisions. A recent experiment at CERN seems to confirm qualitatively these predictions. It may open a possibility for determination of neutron density distribution in nuclei.

Fermi motion and nuclear modification factor

It has been argued recently that the so-called nuclear modification factor ($R_{AA}$) is an observable useful for identifying the quark-gluon plasma. We discuss the effect of Fermi motion in nuclei on $R_{AA}$ at CERN SPS and BNL RHIC energies. Contrary to the simple intuition, rather large effects are found for CERN SPS. The Fermi motion in nuclei contributes significantly to the Cronin effect. The effect found is qualitatively similar to the one observed experimentally at CERN energies and similar to the one obtained in the models of multiple scattering of initial partons. We predict different size of the effect for different types of hadrons, especially at low energies.

Unintegrated parton distributions and meson production in hadronic collisions

The inclusive distributions of gluons and pions for high-energy NN collisions are calculated. The results for several unintegrated gluon distributions (UGD's) from the literature are compared. We find huge differences in both rapidity and $p_t$ of gluons and $π$'s in NN collisions for different models of UGD's. The Karzeev-Levin UGD gives good description of momentum distribution of charged hadrons at midrapidities. We find, however, that the gluonic mechanism discussed does not describe the inclusive distributions of charged particles in the fragmentation region. Some of the missing mechanisms are calculated with the help of unintegrated parton distributions being solutions of the Kwieciński CCFM equations. We predict an asymmetry in $π^+$ and $π^-$ production which could be studied by the BRAHMS collaboration at RHIC.

Neutron halo and the impact-parameter dependence of the $π^+ - π^-$ asymmetry in heavy ion collisions

The theoretical nuclear physics predictions and experimental results on antiprotonic atoms lead to different proton and neutron spatial distributions. At CERN SPS energies production of positive and negative pions differs for $pp$, $pn$, $np$ and $nn$ scattering. These two facts lead to an impact parameter dependence of the $π^+$ to $π^-$ ratio in $^{208}Pb + ^{208}Pb$ collisions. A recent experiment at CERN seems to confirm qualitatively these predictions. The results for two models considered are almost identical. It may open a new possibility for determination of neutron density distribution in nuclei.

A hybrid model for $γ^* p$ scattering at small Bjorken-x

We extend the dipole model for virtual photon - proton scattering to include the resolved photon component explicitly. The parameters of the resolved photon component are taken from the literature, while the parameters of the dipole-nucleon interaction are fitted to the HERA data. A good agreement with experimental data is obtained beyond the region of the fit.
