Hybrid Precoder and Combiner Design with Low Resolution Phase Shifters in mmWave MIMO Systems

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have been considered as a key technology for next generation cellular systems and Wi-Fi networks because of its advances in providing orders-of-magnitude wider bandwidth than current wireless networks. Economical and energy efficient analog/digial hybrid precoding and combining transceivers have been often proposed for mmWave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to overcome the severe propagation loss of mmWave channels. One major shortcoming of existing solutions lies in the assumption of infinite or high-resolution phase shifters (PSs) to realize the analog beamformers. However, low-resolution PSs are typically adopted in practice to reduce the hardware cost and power consumption. Motivated by this fact, in this paper, we investigate the practical design of hybrid precoders and combiners with low-resolution PSs in mmWave MIMO systems. In particular, we propose an iterative algorithm which successively designs the low-resolution analog precoder and combiner pair for each data stream, aiming at conditionally maximizing the spectral efficiency. Then, the digital precoder and combiner are computed based on the obtained effective baseband channel to further enhance the spectral efficiency. In an effort to achieve an even more hardware-efficient large antenna array, we also investigate the design of hybrid beamformers with one-bit resolution (binary) PSs, and present a novel binary analog precoder and combiner optimization algorithm with quadratic complexity in the number of antennas. The proposed low-resolution hybrid beamforming design is further extended to multiuser MIMO communication systems. Simulation results demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed algorithms compared to existing low-resolution hybrid beamforming designs, particularly for the one-bit resolution PS scenario.

A Comparison of Hybrid Beamforming and Digital Beamforming with Low-Resolution ADCs for Multiple Users and Imperfect CSI

For 5G it will be important to leverage the available millimeter wave spectrum. To achieve an approximately omni- directional coverage with a similar effective antenna aperture compared to state of the art cellular systems, an antenna array is required at both the mobile and basestation. Due to the large bandwidth and inefficient amplifiers available in CMOS for mmWave, the analog front-end of the receiver with a large number of antennas becomes especially power hungry. Two main solutions exist to reduce the power consumption: hybrid beam forming and digital beam forming with low resolution Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs). In this work we compare the spectral and energy efficiency of both systems under practical system constraints. We consider the effects of channel estimation, transmitter impairments and multiple simultaneous users. Our power consumption model considers components reported in literature at 60 GHz. In contrast to many other works we also consider the correlation of the quantization error, and generalize the modeling of it to non-uniform quantizers and different quantizers at each antenna. The result shows that as the SNR gets larger the ADC resolution achieving the optimal energy efficiency gets also larger. The energy efficiency peaks for 5 bit resolution at high SNR, since due to other limiting factors the achievable rate almost saturates at this resolution. We also show that in the multi-user scenario digital beamforming is in any case more energy efficient than hybrid beamforming. In addition we show that if different ADC resolutions are used we can achieve any desired trade-offs between power consumption and rate close to those achieved with only one ADC resolution.

Blind Estimation of Sparse Broadband Massive MIMO Channels with Ideal and One-bit ADCs

We study the maximum likelihood problem for the blind estimation of massive mmWave MIMO channels while taking into account their underlying sparse structure, the temporal shifts across antennas in the broadband regime, and ultimately one-bit quantization at the receiver. The sparsity in the angular domain is exploited as a key property to enable the unambiguous blind separation between user's channels. The main advantage of this approach is the fact that the overhead due to pilot sequences can be dramatically reduced especially when operating at low SNR per antenna. In addition, as sparsity is the only assumption made about the channel, the proposed method is robust with respect to the statistical properties of the channel and data and allows the channel estimation and the separation of interfering users from adjacent base stations to be performed in rapidly time-varying scenarios. For the case of one-bit receivers, a blind channel estimation is proposed that relies on the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm. Additionally, performance limits are derived based on the clairvoyant Cramer Rao lower bound. Simulation results demonstrate that this maximum likelihood formulation yields superior estimation accuracy in the narrowband as well as the wideband regime with reasonable computational complexity and limited model assumptions.

Analog Transmit Signal Optimization for Undersampled Delay-Doppler Estimation

In this work, the optimization of the analog transmit waveform for joint delay-Doppler estimation under sub-Nyquist conditions is considered. Based on the Bayesian Cramér-Rao lower bound (BCRLB), we derive an estimation theoretic design rule for the Fourier coefficients of the analog transmit signal when violating the sampling theorem at the receiver through a wide analog pre-filtering bandwidth. For a wireless delay-Doppler channel, we obtain a system optimization problem which can be solved in compact form by using an Eigenvalue decomposition. The presented approach enables one to explore the Pareto region spanned by the optimized analog waveforms. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the framework can be used to reduce the sampling rate at the receiver while maintaining high estimation accuracy. Finally, we verify the practical impact by Monte-Carlo simulations of a channel estimation algorithm.

Massive MIMO Downlink 1-Bit Precoding with Linear Programming for PSK Signaling

Quantized massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems are gaining more interest due to their power efficiency. We present a new precoding technique to mitigate the multi-user interference and the quantization distortions in a downlink multi-user (MU) multiple-input-single-output (MISO) system with 1-bit quantization at the transmitter. This work is restricted to PSK modulation schemes. The transmit signal vector is optimized for every desired received vector taking into account the 1-bit quantization. The optimization is based on maximizing the safety margin to the decision thresholds of the PSK modulation. Simulation results show a significant gain in terms of the uncoded bit-error-ratio (BER) compared to the existing linear precoding techniques.

Optimal Design of Energy and Spectral Efficiency Tradeoff in One-Bit Massive MIMO Systems

This paper considers a single-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system equipped with a base station (BS) that uses one-bit quantization and investigates the energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) trade-off. We first propose a new precoding scheme and downlink power allocation strategy that results in uplink-downlink SINR duality for one-bit MIMO systems. Taking into account the effect of the imperfect channel state information, we obtain approximate closed-form expressions for the uplink and downlink achievable rates under duality with maximum ratio combining/matched-filter and zero-forcing processing. We then focus on joint optimization of the competing SE and EE objectives over the number of users, pilot training duration and operating power, using the weighted product method to obtain the EE/SE Pareto boundary. Numerical results are presented to verify our analytical resultsand demonstrate the fundamental tradeoff between EE and SE for different parameter settings.

Multipair Massive MIMO Relaying Systems with One-Bit ADCs and DACs

This paper considers a multipair amplify-and-forward massive MIMO relaying system with one-bit ADCs and one-bit DACs at the relay. The channel state information is estimated via pilot training, and then utilized by the relay to perform simple maximum-ratio combining/maximum-ratio transmission processing. Leveraging on the Bussgang decomposition, an exact achievable rate is derived for the system with correlated quantization noise. Based on this, a closed-form asymptotic approximation for the achievable rate is presented, thereby enabling efficient evaluation of the impact of key parameters on the system performance. Furthermore, power scaling laws are characterized to study the potential energy efficiency associated with deploying massive one-bit antenna arrays at the relay. In addition, a power allocation strategy is designed to compensate for the rate degradation caused by the coarse quantization. Our results suggest that the quality of the channel estimates depends on the specific orthogonal pilot sequences that are used, contrary to unquantized systems where any set of orthogonal pilot sequences gives the same result. Moreover, the sum rate gap between the double-quantized relay system and an ideal non-quantized system is a moderate factor of $4/π^2$ in the low power regime.

Relaxed Bi-quadratic Optimization for Joint Filter-Signal Design in Signal-Dependent STAP

We investigate an alternative solution method to the joint signal-beamformer optimization problem considered by Setlur and Rangaswamy[1]. First, we directly demonstrate that the problem, which minimizes the received noise, interference, and clutter power under a minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) constraint, is generally non-convex and provide concrete insight into the nature of the nonconvexity. Second, we employ the theory of biquadratic optimization and semidefinite relaxations to produce a relaxed version of the problem, which we show to be convex. The optimality conditions of this relaxed problem are examined and a variety of potential solutions are found, both analytically and numerically.

Channel Estimation and Performance Analysis of One-Bit Massive MIMO Systems

This paper considers channel estimation and system performance for the uplink of a single-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. Each receive antenna of the base station (BS) is assumed to be equipped with a pair of one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) to quantize the real and imaginary part of the received signal. We first propose an approach for channel estimation that is applicable for both flat and frequency-selective fading, based on the Bussgang decomposition that reformulates the nonlinear quantizer as a linear functionwith identical first- and second-order statistics. The resulting channel estimator outperforms previously proposed approaches across all SNRs. We then derive closed-form expressions for the achievable rate in flat fading channels assuming low SNR and a large number of users for the maximal ratio and zero forcing receivers that takes channel estimation error due to both noise and one-bit quantization into account. The closed-form expressions in turn allow us to obtain insight into important system design issues such as optimal resource allocation, maximal sum spectral efficiency, overall energy efficiency, and number of antennas. Numerical results are presented to verify our analytical results and demonstrate the benefit of optimizing system performance accordingly.

Downlink Achievable Rate Analysis in Massive MIMO Systems with One-Bit DACs

In this letter, we investigate the downlink performance of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems where the base station is equipped with one-bit analogto-digital/digital-to-analog converters (ADC/DACs). Considering training-based transmission, we assume the base station (BS) employs the linear minimum mean-squared-error (LMMSE) channel estimator and treats the channel estimate as the true channel to precode the data symbols. We derive an expression for the downlink achievable rate for matched-filter (MF) precoding. A detailed analysis of the resulting power efficiency is pursued using our expression of the achievable rate. Numerical results are presented to verify our analysis. In particular it is shown that, compared with conventional massive MIMO systems, the performance loss in one-bit massive MIMO systems can be compensated for by deploying approximately 2.5 times more antennas at the BS.

Precoding under Instantaneous Per-Antenna Peak Power Constraint

We consider a multi-user (MU) multiple-input-single-output (MISO) downlink system with M single-antenna users and N transmit antennas with a nonlinear power amplifier (PA) at each antenna. Instead of emitting constant envelope (CE) signals from the antennas to have highly power efficient PAs, we relax the CE constraint and allow the transmit signals to have instantaneous power less than or equal to the available power at each PA. The PA power efficiency decreases but simulation results show that the same performance in terms of bit-error-ratio (BER) can be achieved with less transmitted power and less PA power consumption. We propose a linear and a nonlinear precoder design to mitigate the multi-user interference (MUI) under the constraint of a maximal instantaneous per-antenna peak power.

Blind Estimation of Sparse Multi-User Massive MIMO Channels

We provide a maximum likelihood formulation for the blind estimation of massive mmWave MIMO channels while taking into account their underlying sparse structure. The main advantage of this approach is the fact that the overhead due to pilot sequences can be reduced dramatically especially when operating at low SNR per antenna. Thereby, the sparsity in the angular domain is exploited as a key property to enable the unambiguous blind separation between user's channels. On the other hand, as only the sparsity is assumed, the proposed method is robust with respect to the statistical properties of the channel and data and allows the estimation in rapidly time-varying scenarios and eventually the separation of interfering users from adjacent base stations. Additionally, a performance limit is derived based on the clairvoyant Cramér Rao lower bound. Simulation results demonstrate that this maximum likelihood formulation yields superior estimation accuracy with reasonable computational complexity and limited model assumptions.

Analysis of One-Bit Quantized Precoding for the Multiuser Massive MIMO Downlink

We present a mathematical analysis of linear precoders for downlink massive MIMO multiuser systems that employ one-bit digital-to-analog converters at the basestation in order to reduce complexity and mitigate power usage. The analysis is based on the Bussgang theorem, and applies generally to any linear precoding scheme. We examine in detail the special case of the quantized zero-forcing (ZF) precoder, and derive a simple asymptotic expression for the resulting symbol error rate at each terminal. Our analysis illustrates that the performance of the quantized ZF precoder depends primarily on the ratio of the number of antennas to the number of users, and our simulations show that it can outperform the much more complicated maximum likelihood encoder for low-to-moderate signal to noise ratios, where massive MIMO systems are presumed to operate. We also use the Bussgang theorem to derive a new linear precoder optimized for the case of one-bit quantization, and illustrate its improved performance.

How Much Training is Needed in One-Bit Massive MIMO Systems at Low SNR?

This paper considers training-based transmissions in massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). We assume that each coherent transmission block consists of a pilot training stage and a data transmission stage. The base station (BS) first employs the linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) method to estimate the channel and then uses the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) receiver to detect the data symbols. We first obtain an approximate closed-form expression for the uplink achievable rate in the low SNR region. Then based on the result, we investigate the optimal training length that maximizes the sum spectral efficiency for two cases: i) The training power and the data transmission power are both optimized; ii) The training power and the data transmission power are equal. Numerical results show that, in contrast to conventional massive MIMO systems, the optimal training length in one-bit massive MIMO systems is greater than the number of users and depends on various parameters such as the coherence interval and the average transmit power. Also, unlike conventional systems, it is observed that in terms of sum spectral efficiency, there is relatively little benefit to separately optimizing the training and data power.

Channel Estimation and Uplink Achievable Rates in One-Bit Massive MIMO Systems

This paper considers channel estimation and achievable rates for the uplink of a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system where the base station is equipped with one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). By rewriting the nonlinear one-bit quantization using a linear expression, we first derive a simple and insightful expression for the linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) channel estimator. Then employing this channel estimator, we derive a closed-form expression for the lower bound of the achievable rate for the maximum ratio combiner (MRC) receiver. Numerical results are presented to verify our analysis and show that our proposed LMMSE channel estimator outperforms the near maximum likelihood (nML) estimator proposed previously.

On Secrecy Metrics for Physical Layer Security over Quasi-Static Fading Channels

Theoretical studies on physical layer security often adopt the secrecy outage probability as the performance metric for wireless communications over quasi-static fading channels. The secrecy outage probability has two limitations from a practical point of view: a) it does not give any insight into the eavesdropper's decodability of confidential messages; b) it cannot characterize the amount of information leakage to the eavesdropper when an outage occurs. Motivated by the limitations of the secrecy outage probability, we propose three new secrecy metrics for secure transmissions over quasi-static fading channels. The first metric establishes a link between the concept of secrecy outage and the decodability of messages at the eavesdropper. The second metric provides an error-probability-based secrecy metric which is typically used for the practical implementation of secure wireless systems. The third metric characterizes how much or how fast the confidential information is leaked to the eavesdropper. We show that the proposed secrecy metrics collectively give a more comprehensive understanding of physical layer security over fading channels and enable one to appropriately design secure communication systems with different views on how secrecy is measured.

Channel Acquisition for Massive MIMO-OFDM with Adjustable Phase Shift Pilots

We propose adjustable phase shift pilots (APSPs) for channel acquisition in wideband massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to reduce the pilot overhead. Based on a physically motivated channel model, we first establish a relationship between channel space-frequency correlations and the channel power angle-delay spectrum in the massive antenna array regime, which reveals the channel sparsity in massive MIMO-OFDM. With this channel model, we then investigate channel acquisition, including channel estimation and channel prediction, for massive MIMO-OFDM with APSPs. We show that channel acquisition performance in terms of sum mean square error can be minimized if the user terminals' channel power distributions in the angle-delay domain can be made non-overlapping with proper phase shift scheduling. A simplified pilot phase shift scheduling algorithm is developed based on this optimal channel acquisition condition. The performance of APSPs is investigated for both one symbol and multiple symbol data models. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed APSP approach can provide substantial performance gains in terms of achievable spectral efficiency over the conventional phase shift orthogonal pilot approach in typical mobility scenarios.

Massive MIMO for Wireless Sensing with a Coherent Multiple Access Channel

We consider the detection and estimation of a zero-mean Gaussian signal in a wireless sensor network with a coherent multiple access channel, when the fusion center (FC) is configured with a large number of antennas and the wireless channels between the sensor nodes and FC experience Rayleigh fading. For the detection problem, we study the Neyman-Pearson (NP) Detector and Energy Detector (ED), and find optimal values for the sensor transmission gains. For the NP detector which requires channel state information (CSI), we show that detection performance remains asymptotically constant with the number of FC antennas if the sensor transmit power decreases proportionally with the increase in the number of antennas. Performance bounds show that the benefit of multiple antennas at the FC disappears as the transmit power grows. The results of the NP detector are also generalized to the linear minimum mean squared error estimator. For the ED which does not require CSI, we derive optimal gains that maximize the deflection coefficient of the detector, and we show that a constant deflection can be asymptotically achieved if the sensor transmit power scales as the inverse square root of the number of FC antennas. Unlike the NP detector, for high sensor power the multi-antenna ED is observed to empirically have significantly better performance than the single-antenna implementation. A number of simulation results are included to validate the analysis.
