Additive invariants of Finite-dimensional DG-algebras

Abstract

Orlov has shown that additive invariants such as K-theory and Hochschild homology of smooth finite-dimensional DG-algebras behave similarly to those of finite-dimensional algebras. The similarities only go so far: there are examples of finite-dimensional DG-algebras with vanishing and uncountable Grothendieck groups. We show that for DG-quivers with relations, the Grothendieck groups are free of the expected rank and that, in the smooth case, all additive invariants are determined by the base field. We use our results to rule out certain finite-dimensional DG-algebras from being phantoms.

An explicit Dennis trace and its compatibility with Koszul duality

In this paper, we construct explicit Dennis trace maps from algebraic $K$-theory to Hochschild homology for dg module and curved dg comodule categories, and prove their compatibility with derived Koszul duality. For this, we construct a natural chain map $τ$ from the chains on the newly defined thickened nerve to the total complex of the dg cyclic nerve, with explicit formulas incorporating morphisms and coherent higher homotopies, which generalizes McCarthy's approach. This $τ$ construction works both for modules over dg algebras and for cdg comodules over counital conilpotent curved dg coalgebras. Combining the $τ$ with the dg-enriched Waldhausen $S_\bullet$-construction and a Hochschild delooping theorem yields the Dennis trace maps. For thick subcategories corresponding under derived Koszul duality, we prove that the induced $K$-theory equivalences and Hochschild homology isomorphisms fit into natural commutative diagrams with these trace maps.

Equivariant localizing motives and multiplicative norms on algebraic K-theory

We construct multiplicative norms on equivariant nonconnective algebraic $K$-theory for finite groups $G$. We also construct a genuine equivariant version of THH equipped with a Dennis trace map from K-theory compatible with the multiplicative norms. To do so, we follow the general strategy of Blumberg-Gepner-Tabuada in the nonequivariant case by generalizing their category of localizing motives to the genuine equivariant context, building upon the theory of perfect $G$-stable categories of the first-named author. Crucially, we proceed using the recent perspective on noncommutative motives by the second-named author with Sosnilo and Winges which allows us to deal with non-exact functors on this category of motives. Together with an isotropy separation argument for equivariant cubes, we prove our main theorem that norms of stable categories preserve equivariant motivic equivalences. As an immediate consequence, we obtain a unique equivariant multiplicative refinement of nonconnective algebraic $K$-theory. From these constructions and results, we draw several applications, namely: (1) that the endofunctor of (equivariant) tensor powers on ordinary perfect stable categories preserve motivic equivalences; (2) that the multiplicative norms also preserve the additive motivic equivalences, thus yielding a motivic refinement of a result of Elmanto-Haugseng and Cnossen-Haugseng-Lenz-Linskens that connective algebraic K-theory admits multiplicative norms; (3) we construct a genuine equivariant version of topological Hochschild homology equipped with a Dennis trace map that is compatible with multiplicative norms; and (4) we prove that every genuine $G$-spectrum is the K-theory of a perfect $G$-stable category.

An Atiyah-Segal homomorphism for approximate representations of infinite groups, and almost multiplicative ucp maps

The Atiyah-Segal homomorphism relates the representation ring of a finite group to the $K$-theory ring of its classifying space. We develop a version of this for infinite groups, but based on a ring of approximate representations rather than representations. We then use known results on the Baum-Connes conjecture to show that our homomorphism is an isomorphism for many groups: this includes all torsion-free amenable groups, and all torsion-free fundamental groups of compact manifolds of dimension at most three. The main motivation is the desire to understand approximate representations using topological tools: as a sample application we give some examples of torsion phenomena in approximate representation theory. The methods of proof are $C^*$-algebraic: the key idea is to relate our Atiyah-Segal type homomorphism to Kasparov's coassembly map. The main step realizes (Hausdorffized) $KK$-theory as approximately multiplicative ucp maps modulo stable approximate unitary equivalence for appropriate $C^*$-algebras. This is in the spirit of the stable uniqueness theorems of Dadarlat-Eilers and Lin, and may be of purely $C^*$-algebraic interest.
