Isomorphismusvermutungen und 3-Mannigfaltigkeiten

Based on results by S.K. Roushon (math.KT/0408243 and math.KT/0405211) this thesis summarizes in an axiomatic way when a Meta-Isomorphism-Conjecture in the sense of Lueck and Reich (math.KT/0402405) is true for fundamental groups of 3-dimensional manifolds. In particular we prove that the fibered Farrell-Jones isomorphism conjectures for L-theory and algebraic K-theory are true for this class of groups if they are true for semidirect products of $\mathbb{Z^2}$ with $\mathbb{Z}$.

Topological categories related to Fredholm operators: II. The analytical index

Naively, the analytic index of a family of self-adjoint Fredholm operators ought to be (an equivalence class of) the family of the kernels of these operators. The present paper is devoted to a rigorous version of this idea based on ideas of Segal as developed by the author in arXiv:2111.14313 [math.KT]. The resulting new definition of the analytic index makes sense under much weaker continuity assumptions than the Atiyah-Singer one and can be easily adjusted to families of operators in fibers of a Hilbert bundle. We prove the correctness of the new definition and show that it agrees with the Atiyah-Singer one when the latter applies. As an illustration, these results are used to clarify some subtle aspects of the notion of spectral sections introduced by Melrose and Piazza. The necessary definitions and results from arXiv:2111.14313 [math.KT] are repeated or reviewed in order to make this paper independent to the extent possible.

Bialgebra Cyclic Homology with Coefficients, Part II

This is the second part of the article [math.KT/0408094]. In the first paper, we used the underlying coalgebra structure to develop a cyclic theory. In this paper we define a dual theory by using the algebra structure. We define a cyclic homology theory for triples $(X,B,Y)$ where $B$ is a bialgebra, $X$ is a $B$--comodule algebra and $Y$ is just a stable $B$--module/comodule. We recover the main result of [math.KT/0310088] that these homology theories are dual to each other in the appropriate sense when the bialgebra is a Hopf algebra and the stable coefficient module satisfies anti-Yetter-Drinfeld condition. We also compute this particular homology for the quantum deformation of an arbitrary semi-simple Lie algebra and the Hopf algebra of foliations of codimension $N$ with stable but non-anti-Yetter-Drinfeld coefficients.

Differential graded Lie algebras and Leibniz algebra cohomology

In this note, we interpret Leibniz algebras as differential graded Lie algebras. Namely, we consider two functors from the category of Leibniz algebras to that of differential graded Lie algebras and show that they naturally give rise to the Leibniz cohomology and the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology. As an application, we prove a conjecture stated by Pirashvili in arXiv:1904.00121 [math.KT].

Duality pairings with the analytic structure group

We construct a slant product $\mathrm{S}^{G\times H}_p(X\times Y)\otimes \mathrm{K}_{-q}(\bar{\mathfrak{c}}^{\mathrm{red}} Y\rtimes H)\to \mathrm{K}_{p-q}(\mathrm{C}^\ast_G X)$ on the analytic structure group of Higson and Roe and the K-theory of the stable Higson compactification taking values in the (equivariant) Roe algebra. This complements the slant products constructed in earlier work of Engel and the authors ( arXiv:1909.03777 [math.KT] ). The distinguishing feature of our new slant product is that it specializes to a duality pairing $\mathrm{S}^H_p(Y) \otimes \mathrm{K}_{-p}(\bar{\mathfrak{c}}^{\mathrm{red}} (Y)\rtimes H)\to \mathbb{Z}$ which can be used to extract numerical invariants out of elements in the analytic structure group such as rho-invariants associated to positive scalar curvature metrics.

Higher polyhedral K-groups

We define higher polyhedral K-groups for commutative rings, starting from the stable groups of elementary automorphisms of polyhedral algebras. Both Volodin's theory and Quillen's + construction are developed. In the special case of algebras associated with unit simplices one recovers the usual algebraic K-groups, while the general case of lattice polytopes reveals many new aspects, governed by polyhedral geometry. This paper is a continuation of [BrG5] (math.KT/0104206) which is devoted to the study of polyhedral aspects of the classical Steinberg relations. The present work explores the polyhedral geometry behind Suslin's well known proof of the coincidence of the classical Volodin's and Quillen's theories. We also determine all K-groups coming from 2-dimensional polytopes.

Bialgebra Cyclic Homology with Coefficients, Part I

The cyclic (co)homology of Hopf algebras is defined by Connes and Moscovici [math.DG/9806109] and later extended by Khalkhali et.al [math.KT/0306288] to admit stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld coefficient module/comodules. In this paper we will show that one can further extend the cyclic homology of Hopf algebras with coefficients non-trivially. The new homology, called the bialgebra cyclic homology, admits stable coefficient module/comodules, dropping the anti-Yetter-Drinfeld condition. This fact allows the new homology to use bialgebras, not just Hopf algebras. We will also give computations for bialgebra cyclic homology of the Hopf algebra of foliations of codimension $n$ and the quantum deformation of an arbitrary semi-simple Lie algebra with several stable but non-anti-Yetter-Drinfeld coefficients.

Periodicity of hermitian K-theory and Milnor's K-groups

We use recent results proved by Berrick and the author (math.KT/0509404) to improve the periodicity theorem in hermitian K-theory. We define also a new filtration of the classical Witt ring W(A), built from non degenerate quadratic forms over any commutative ring A where 2 is invertible. This filtration is linked to the Milnor and Quillen K-groups. Using the solution of Milnor's conjecture by Voevodsky, we show that the non triviality of Milnor's K-groups mod. 2 implies also the non triviality of higher Witt groups (when A is a field).

On the Baum-Connes conjecture in the real case

We prove that if the classical Baum-Connes conjecture in complex K-theory is true (for a given discrete group G), then the conjecture is also true in the real case (for the same group G). The essential ingredients of the proof are the descent theorem in topological K-theory (math.KT/0509396) and a Paschke duality for C*-algebras proved by John Roe (Q.J. Math. 55 (2004) 325-331). According to S. Stolz, this result is linked with the existence of a Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature on a compact connected spin manifold with G as fundamental group.

Descent cohomology and corings

A coring approach to non-Abelian descent cohomology of [P Nuss and M Wambst, Non-Abelian Hopf cohomology, Preprint arXiv:math.KT/0511712, (2005)] is described and a definition of a Galois cohomology for partial group actions is proposed.

Boundary Value Problems on Manifolds with Fibered Boundary

We define a class of boundary value problems on manifolds with fibered boundary. This class is in a certain sense a deformation between the classical boundary value problems and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer problems in subspaces. The boundary conditions in this theory are taken as elements of the C^*-algebra generated by pseudodifferential operators and families of pseudodifferential operators in the fibers. We prove the Fredholm property for elliptic boundary value problems. This class also contains nonlocal boundary value problems of math.KT/0108107. We compute a topological obstruction (similar to the Atiyah-Bott obstruction) to the existence of elliptic boundary conditions for a given operator. Geometric operators with a nontrivial obstruction are given.

The isomorphism conjecture for 3-manifold groups and K-theory of virtually poly-surface groups

This article has two purposes. In \cite{R3} (math.KT/0405211) we showed that the FIC (Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture for pseudoisotopy functor) for a particular class of 3-manifolds (we denoted this class by \cal C) is the key to prove the FIC for 3-manifold groups in general. And we proved the FIC for the fundamental groups of members of a subclass of \cal C. This result was obtained by showing that the double of any member of this subclass is either Seifert fibered or supports a nonpositively curved metric. In this article we prove that for any M in {\cal C} there is a closed 3-manifold P such that either P is Seifert fibered or is a nonpositively curved 3-manifold and \pi_1(M) is a subgroup of \pi_1(P). As a consequence this proves that the FIC is true for any B-group (see definition 3.2 in \cite{R3}). Therefore, the FIC is true for any Haken 3-manifold group and hence for any 3-manifold group (using the reduction theorem of \cite{R3}) provided we assume the Geometrization conjecture. The above result also proves the FIC for a class of 4-manifold groups (see \cite{R2}(math.GT/0209119)). The second aspect of this article is to relax a condition in the definition of strongly poly-surface group (\cite{R1} (math.GT/0209118)) and define a new class of groups (we call them {\it weak strongly poly-surface} groups). Then using the above result we prove the FIC for any virtually weak strongly poly-surface group. We also give a corrected proof of the main lemma of \cite{R1}.

Anchor maps and stable modules in depth two

An algebra extension A | B is right depth two if its tensor-square A\otimes_B A is in the Dress category Add A as A-B-bimodules. We consider necessary conditions for right, similarly left, D2 extensions in terms of partial A-invariance of two-sided ideals in A contracted to the centralizer. Finite dimensional algebras extending central simple algebras are shown to be depth two. Following P. Xu math.QA/9905192, left and right bialgebroids over a base algebra R may be defined in terms of anchor maps, or representations on R. The anchor maps for the bialgebroids S = End {}_BA_B and T = End {}_AA\otimes_BA_A over the centralizer R = C_A(B) are the modules {}_SR and R_T studied in math.RA/0505004, math.RA/0408155 and math.GR/0409346, which provide information about the bialgebroids and the extension (cf. math.QA/0409106). The anchor maps for the Hopf algebroids in math.KT/0105105 and math.QA/0508411 reverse the order of right multiplication and action by a Hopf algebra element, and lift to the isomorphism in math.QA/0508638. We sketch a theory of stable $A$-modules and their endomorphism rings and generalize the smash product decomposition in Prop. 1.1, (L. Kadison, Hopf Algebroid and H-separable extensions, Proc. A.M.S. 131 (2003), 2993-3002) to any A-module. We observe that Schneider's coGalois theory (Isr.J.Math 1990) provides examples of codepth two, such as the quotient epimorphism of a finite dimensional normal Hopf subalgebra. A homomorphism of finite dimensional coalgebras is codepth two if and only if its dual homomorphism of algebras is depth two.

Divisibility properties of motivic cohomology

We extend results of Colliot-Th\'el\`ene and Raskind on the $\mathcal{K}_2$-cohomology of smooth projective varieties over a separably closed field $k$ to the \'etale motivic cohomology of smooth, not necessarily projective, varieties over $k$. Some consequences are drawn, such as the degeneration of the Bloch-Lichtenbaum spectral sequence for any field containing $k$.

Invariants of upper motives

Let H be a homology theory for algebraic varieties over a field k. To a complete k-variety X, one naturally attaches an ideal of the coefficient ring H(k). We show that, when X is regular, this ideal depends only on the upper Chow motive of X. This generalises the classical results asserting that this ideal is a birational invariant of smooth varieties for particular choices of H, such as the Chow group. When H is the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves, we obtain a lower bound on the canonical dimension of varieties. When H is the algebraic cobordism, we give a new proof of a theorem of Levine and Morel. Finally we discuss some splitting properties of geometrically unirational field extensions of small transcendence degree.

Invariance and the twisted Chern character : a case study

We give details of the proof of the remark made in \cite{G2} that the Chern characters of the canonical generators on the K homology of the quantum group $SU_q(2)$ are not invariant under the natural $SU_q(2)$ coaction. Furthermore, the conjecture made in \cite{G2} about the nontriviality of the twisted Chern character coming from an odd equivariant spectral triple on $SU_q(2)$ is settled in the affirmative.
