Termination-dependent surface Fermiology in the intercalated altermagnet CoNb$_4$Se$_8$

Abstract

Altermagnets have recently gained attention for hosting symmetry-enforced spin-split bands despite zero net magnetization. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) offers direct access to their electronic structure. However, the intrinsic surface sensitivity of this technique complicates the identification of the observed features: Surface states can be misinterpreted as the spin-split counterpart of bulk bands. This issue becomes particularly relevant for layered intercalated systems, where micrometer-sized domains with distinct terminations often coexist on a cleaved surface. We discuss this scenario for CoNb$_4$Se$_8$, one of the first established layered altermagnets. Supported by density functional theory calculations, we employ micro-ARPES to probe individual domains and reveal two contrasting surface terminations. We identify Co- and Se-terminated domains with characteristic surface states arising from bulk-surface connectivity of the material. Our work shows that termination-dependent surface contributions are essential for the reliable spectroscopic identification of altermagnetism and for assessing its presence across the family of layered materials.

Coherence and pairing enhancement in a trilayer cuprate with layer-selective charge order

Trilayer cuprates hold the record for the highest superconducting critical temperatures ($T_{\text{c}}$), yet the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES), we uncover a striking interplay between charge order, superconducting gap magnitude, and quasiparticle coherence in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ (Bi2223). We present ARPES-based evidence of charge order on the inner CuO$_2$ plane -- as confirmed via resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) -- and show that the same inner plane hosts a large superconducting gap matching its doping, firmly establishing it as underdoped. Despite its underdoped nature, the inner plane also exhibits an exceptional degree of quasiparticle coherence; suppressing charge-order fluctuations further enhances this, making it comparable to that of the overdoped outer planes at elevated electronic temperatures. At the same time, on the overdoped outer planes we find larger superconducting gaps than what is seen on comparably doped single and bilayer cuprates, indicating an unexpected and simultaneous enhancement of both coherence and pairing interactions in Bi2223. These findings, supported by complementary single- and three-layer Hubbard model calculations, reveal a unique interlayer mechanism in which both pairing strength and phase coherence are optimized when interfacing planes with distinct hole concentrations, providing new microscopic insight into the record $T_{\text{c}}$ of Bi2223.

Algebraic Structure of Finite-Size Bethe Solutions in the Heisenberg Chain

The spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is the canonical example of an integrable quantum many-body model. Despite its exact solvability, explicit finite-size solutions are typically only accessible via numerical evaluation of the Bethe ansatz equations. Here, we analyse the algebraic structure of the exact, symbolic ground states for chains up to twelve sites using the Bethe ansatz. We find that the algebraic degree of the ground state magnon phases and Bethe roots scale with respect to system size at a different rate to the ground-state energy and wavefunction coefficients. The ground-state Bethe roots and energy are found to become Galois unsolvable for ten or more sites, thus demonstrating the lack of a symbolic analytical solution in a quantum integrable model due to algebraic complexity.

Resolving Spectral Gaps of the Frustrated Spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Chain via Dual Spin-Sector Variational Quantum Eigensolver

Finding excited states and resolving spectral gaps in frustrated quantum spin systems using Variational Quantum Eigensolvers is complicated by state-ordering inversions. In the frustrated spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chain, standard single-sector variational quantum deflation collapses onto intermediate triplet excitation, preventing the isolation of excited singlets and the singlet-singlet gap. To resolve these gaps, a Dual Spin-Sector Variational Quantum Eigensolver framework is introduced for near-term quantum architectures. By partitioning the search across magnetization sectors $S^z=0$ and $S^z=1$, the lowest triplet is resolved as an unconstrained ground state in $S^z=1$ with zero deflation penalty. Leveraging exact global spin-rotation symmetry, this state is mapped analytically into $S^z=0$ without ancilla overhead, unlocking dual deflation via shallow compute-uncompute circuits. Tracking both singlet-triplet and singlet-singlet gaps across coupling ratios $J_2/J_1$ from $0$ to $1$ for chains up to $16$ qubits faithfully captures all critical phenomena: the continuous Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, exact Majumdar-Ghosh dimer degeneracy, level-ordering inversion in the gapless liquid phase, and incommensurate spiral excitations. Circuit depth scaling up to twenty layers provides an overparameterization mechanism overcoming classical local minima in strongly frustrated regimes, reducing relative energy errors below $1\%$ and elevating state fidelities above $97\%$ on $16$ qubits. Projective measurement sampling demonstrates resilience against shot noise, providing a practical blueprint for exploring frustrated quantum magnetism on near-term quantum devices.
