The 3He(α,γ)7Be γ-ray angular distribution: measured, and calculated by effective field theory

Abstract

The 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be reaction takes place in several distinct astrophysical scenarios. First, in solar hydrogen burning, 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be controls the competition between the pp-I chain, on the one hand, and the pp-II and -III chains, on the other hand. Its rate directly affects the solar model predictions for the well-measured 7Be and 8B solar neutrino fluxes, which can in principle be used as solar thermometer. Second, in Big Bang nucleosynthesis, 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be is the main production channel for primordial 7Li, the decay product of 7Be. Finally, the reaction is believed to produce radioactive 7Be in astrophysical novae. The cross section of this reaction has been studied previously using different methods, namely 7Be activation, 7Be recoil detection, and in-beam γ-ray detection. The latter studies have in many cases been performed with just one detector in close geometry. Here, for the first time a comprehensive measurement of the 3He(α,γ)7Be γ-ray angular distribution is reported. Altogether 22 high-purity germanium detectors were used, arranged at 27-145 degrees angle with respect to the beam direction. Data were taken at 442-1213 keV center-of-mass energy. In addition, one data point for the astrophysical S-factor was obtained with the activation method. The angular data are compared with the predictions from a hybrid theoretical approach, where the E1 transitions are modeled using a cluster-based effective field theory (EFT) while the M1 and E2 transitions within an EFT-inspired framework. Good agreement is found, if the interference among these multipolarities is taken into account in the theory.

Half-Life Measurements of $^{110}$Sn, $^{113}$Sn, $^{117\mathrm{m}}$Sn, and $^{123\mathrm{m}}$Sn Produced via Photon Activation of Natural Tin

We report independent determinations of the ground-state half-lives of $^{110}$Sn, $^{113}$Sn, and the isomeric states $^{117\mathrm{m}}$Sn (J$^π = 11/2^{-}$) and $^{123\mathrm{m}}$Sn (J$^π = 3/2^{+}$), produced via photon activation of natural tin using a TT-300HE Rhodotron accelerator. The activated samples were monitored over several months using a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. Time-dependent $γ$-ray spectra were analyzed using Gaussian peak fitting for the \SI{280.49}{keV}, \SI{391.697}{keV}, \SI{158.56}{keV}, and \SI{160.34}{keV} transitions, yielding half-lives of \SI{4.165(25)}{h} for $^{110}$Sn, \SI{116.08(94)}{d} for $^{113}$Sn, \SI{13.95(1)}{d} for $^{117\mathrm{m}}$Sn, and \SI{39.95(12)}{min} for $^{123\mathrm{m}}$Sn. Agreement with Nuclear Data Sheets (NDS) recommended values is generally observed for $^{110}$Sn, $^{113}$Sn, and $^{123\mathrm{m}}$Sn, with deviations consistent within combined uncertainties when quantified using standardized differences (z-scores). In contrast, $^{117\mathrm{m}}$Sn exhibits a statistically significant deviation from the evaluated value of \SI{13.76(4)}{d}, with a z-score indicating a discrepancy well beyond expected statistical fluctuations. This result suggests a systematic difference warranting further investigation, with potential implications for applications relying on precise decay data, including calibration, dosimetry, and astrophysical modeling.

Letter of Intent for Alpha Knockout from Nuclei in Hard Exclusive Processes with ALERT

We propose to measure hard exclusive $α$-knockout reactions from the light $α$-conjugate nuclei $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{20}$Ne using electron scattering. Three reaction channels will be measured for the first time on the same target set: (i) the quasi-elastic knockout $(e, e' α)$ knockout, which establishes a baseline against $α$-clustering model calculations and tests final-state-interaction (FSI) models; (ii) coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) on a bound $α$, which provides a quark-level probe of the bound system through the beam-spin asymmetry; and (iii) coherent vector-meson production ($ϕ$ and J/{$ψ$}) on a bound $α$, which probes the gluon distribution of the bound cluster through two-gluon exchange. The central observables are ratios of cross sections and beam-spin asymmetries between the bound $α$ in $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{20}$ Ne and the free $^4$He ground state. Together these measurements directly address the question of the role of QCD in the structure of light nuclei : do the quark and gluon distributions of an $α$ embedded in a heavier nucleus differ from those of a free 4He, and do those modifications track the increasing $α$-clustering strength along the $α$-conjugate chain? The measurement will use the 12 GeV CEBAF accelerator in Hall B with the CLAS12 spectrometer instrumented with the ALERT low-energy recoil detector and high-pressure gas straw targets. ALERT, which replaced the CLAS12 silicon vertex tracker, was successfully commissioned and operated during Run Group L (RG-L) from April through August 2025. It uniquely provides identification of low-momentum recoiling light ions (p, d, t, $^3$He, and $^4$He) close to the beamline at the high luminosities required by these exclusive channels.

News from NA61/SHINE

NA61/SHINE is a multi-purpose, fixed-target hadron spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Its research program includes studies of strong interactions, as well as reference measurements for neutrino and cosmic-ray physics. A significant advantage of NA61/SHINE over collider experiments is its extended coverage of phase space available for particle production. This contribution summarizes recent selected results from our strong interaction program. These include rapidity spectra of $K^+$ and $π^-$ mesons in Xe+La reactions compared to other collision systems, energy dependence of the scaled $π^-$ total yield (the `kink` plot) in Xe+La compared to other collision systems and models, $ϕ$(1020) rapidity spectra in Ar+Sc collisions compared to models, $Λ$ transverse polarization in p+p reactions, energy dependence of intensive quantities of net-electric charge distribution in Ar+Sc collisions compared to p+p results, as well as an update on the evidence of large violation of isospin symmetry in kaon production --- the excess of charged over neutral kaons.
