An explicit rational lemniscate counterexample with certified separators

Abstract

In the setting of the previously reported degree-seven counterexample of ani, we present an explicit monic polynomial with real rational coefficients and a direct proof by certified separators. The polynomial has seven simple zeros in the open unit disk. Every continuous path joining distinct zeros in its closed unit sublevel set has image of one-dimensional Hausdorff measure greater than $2+10^{-8}$. Five piecewise-linear graphs exclude twenty of the twenty-one zero pairs; two short forbidden segments force a quantitative detour for the remaining pair. Exact rational Bernstein certificates verify the graph inequalities on forty-four terminal intervals and their unbounded tails. The proof does not require critical-point counting or analytic inverse branches. We separately record the general continuum and dilation arguments that transfer path-length obstructions to Hausdorff measure and to closed sublevel sets. Those transfers are not asserted as new principles. The focus is the explicit real-coefficient construction, its separation certificates, and its verified numerical margin, rather than a first negative answer to the length-two question or a disproof of every larger universal bound.

Function spaces with compact-open topology need not be sober

We exhibit sober spaces $X$ and $Y$ such that the function space $[X \to Y]_K$ of continuous maps, equipped with the compact-open topology, is not sober; the codomain can be chosen to be the Sierpiński space $S$. Our construction builds on Isbell's complete lattice $M$, whose Scott space $ΣM$ is non-sober. Let $H = Q(M)$ be the set of nonempty compact saturated subsets of $ΣM$, ordered by reverse inclusion. Since $H$ is well known to be a spatial frame, the space $X = \mathrm{pt}(H)$ is sober with $\mathcal{O}(X) \cong H$. The key technical result is that sobriety of the space $H$ would entail sobriety of the original Scott space $ΣM$. This contradicts Isbell's example, and the desired counterexample follows.

The Extended Real Line with Reentry: A Compact Path-Connected US-not-KC Space

We construct what is, to the author's knowledge, the first compact path-connected US-not-KC space. The Extended Real Line with Reentry (ERI) identifies $-\infty$, $0$ and $+\infty$ to a single point $\ast$ of the extended real line and requires every neighborhood of $\ast$ to have dense preimage under the quotient map. ERI es compact, path-connected, sober, and Baire; it is $T_1$, US, and has unique limits even for transfinite sequences, but not KC, not weakly Hausdorff, and not Hausdorff; sequential convergence is explicit: $\hat{x}_n \to \ast$ iff $(x_n)$ has no accumulation point in $\mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}$. The compact US-not-KC spaces previously on record are totally disconnected or fail path-connectedness; a one-point extension of $(0,1)$, analyzed alongside, achieves the same separation and is not homeomorphic to ERI.

Arbitrary Stage Spectra for Raikov Remainders Along Quotient Towers

Let $θ$ be an ordinal and let $(N_α)_{α\leqθ}$ be a continuous increasing tower of closed normal subgroups of a Hausdorff topological group $G$, with $N_0=\{e\}$. Write $ρG$ for the Raikov completion of $G$, and put $K_α=\overline{N_α}^{ρG}$ and $H_α=GK_α$. The successive and limit differences of the groups $H_α$ mark the first stages at which points of $ρG$ become old quotient points. For every nonzero ordinal $θ$ and every set $S\subseteq(0,θ]$, there is a Hausdorff pseudocompact Boolean group with a continuous tower of closed normal subgroups such that every member of the tower is pseudocompact and the nonempty strata occur exactly at the stages in $S$. The terminal quotient can simultaneously be chosen isomorphic to $\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z$, and for every $δ<θ$ the successive factor $N_{δ+1}/N_δ$ is compact exactly when $δ+1\notin S$. Thus a tower may have a single nonempty stratum at a limit stage even when every successive factor is compact. For a closed normal subgroup $N$ of $G$, let $\widehat q:ρG\toρ(G/N)$ extend the quotient homomorphism and put $K=\overline N^{ρG}$. Over $gN\in G/N$, the fiber in $ρG\setminus G$ is $g(K\setminus N)$, homeomorphic to $ρN\setminus N$, while for $y\in\widehat q(ρG)\setminus(G/N)$ the entire $\widehat q$-fiber lies in $ρG\setminus G$ and is homeomorphic to $ρN$. For precompact kernels this gives a canonical decomposition, and nested quotients give the two-stage identity underlying the transfinite filtration. Further results concern pseudocompact Raikov remainders and include countable Abelian examples.
