The Quillen and sharbly Hopf algebra structures on Steinberg homology coincide

Abstract

Two recent constructions independently give bigraded commutative Hopf algebra structures on the homology of $\mathrm{GL}(\mathbb{Z})$ with rational Steinberg coefficients. One, by Ash--Miller--Patzt, uses the sharbly resolution. The other, by Brown--Chan--Galatius--Payne, uses the Quillen spectral sequence and rank-filtered maps on $BK(\mathbb{Z})$. We prove that the two structures coincide. Both are induced by join and parabolic restriction operations on Steinberg modules.

Plethysm for characters of relative operads and props

We investigate the relationship between symmetric functions and the representation theory of operads, relative operads, and props. We extend the classical character map for symmetric sequences to relative bisymmetric sequences and symmetric bimodules. We introduce new operations on symmetric functions, the relative plethysm and the (connected) box product, which model via the character map the composition product of relative operads and the box product of prop(erad)s. As applications, we include the computation of characters for stable twisted cohomology of automorphism groups of free groups and the Albanese cohomology of the IA-automorphism group.

Simplicial properadic homotopy

In this paper, we settle the homotopy properties of the infinity-morphisms of homotopy (bial)-gebras over properads, i.e. algebraic structures made up of operations with several inputs and outputs. We start by providing the literature with characterizations for the various types of infinity-morphisms, the most seminal one being the equivalence between infinity-quasi-isomorphisms and zig-zags of quasi-isomorphisms which plays a key role in the study the formality property. We establish a simplicial enrichment for the categories of gebras over some cofibrant properads together with their infinity-morphisms, whose homotopy category provides us with the localisation with respect to infinity-quasi-isomorphisms. These results extend to the properadic level known properties for operads, but the lack of the rectification procedure in this setting forces us to use different methods.

Weak, stable, and ordinary Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of finite spaces

The weak, stable, and ordinary Lusternik--Schnirelmann categories of a finite $T_0$-space $X$ satisfy $\operatorname{cat}_w(X)\leq \operatorname{cat}_s(X)\leq \operatorname{cat}(X)$. We give a general construction answering the simultaneous-strictness question of Cárdenas, Flores, Quintero, and Villar-Liñán. If $P$ is weakly contractible but noncontractible and the deletion of one point makes $P$ contractible, then adjoining $m\geq 2$ incomparable maximal points produces a connected finite space with category triple $(1,2,m)$. Moreover, after any positive number of barycentric subdivisions its ordinary category is equal to $2$. Applying the construction to a nine-point space yields examples on $m+9$ points and, in particular, a twelve-point example for which both inequalities are strict. Using additivity under disjoint unions, we also realize every triple $(a,b,c)$ with $1\leq a<b\leq 2a$ and $c\geq b$, as well as every triple $(a,a,c)$ with $2\leq a\leq c$. We conclude with questions concerning connected realizations and the minimum cardinality of a finite space exhibiting simultaneous strictness.
