AI-based single-shot structured-light depth reconstruction for real-time laparoscopic surgical guidance

Abstract

Significance. Accurate intraoperative depth perception is important for autonomous and semi-autonomous robotic laparoscopic surgery. Conventional fringe projection profilometry can achieve millimeter-scale accuracy but often requires multi-shot acquisition, digital-micromirror-device projection, and projector-camera synchronization, complicating integration into compact laparoscopic systems. Aim. To develop a synchronization-free, single-shot depth-sensing platform using a passive LED-illuminated binary mask and a VQ-VAE prior with a custom U-Net depth head. Approach. A compact projection module was coupled to one channel of a dual-channel laparoscope, while the second channel imaged the fringe-illuminated target. A Zivid 3D camera acquired reference depth for 722 paired phantom images. Zivid depth maps were reprojected into the SSLE image frame for supervised training and evaluation. The VQ-VAE encoded each input into a discrete latent representation, and a latent-space U-Net predicted depth without a separate mask-prediction branch. Results. Using a fixed train/validation/test split, the proposed model achieved an MAE of 3.70 mm, AbsRel of 0.0326, delta=1.1 accuracy of 0.962, and delta=1.1^2 accuracy of 0.970. It achieved lower MAE than the dual U-Net MaskNet + DepthNet baseline and outperformed off-the-shelf monocular depth models in MAE, AbsRel, and threshold accuracy. The pipeline operated at 26.0 Hz over 301 consecutive frames on an NVIDIA A100 GPU. Conclusions. The LED-illuminated binary-pattern platform with latent-space depth reconstruction enables synchronization-free, video-rate endoscopic depth estimation. Results demonstrate Zivid-referenced phantom reconstruction without an explicit segmentation stage, while emphasizing the importance of dataset size and SSLE-Zivid calibration accuracy.

Bayesian-Optimized Superpixel-GrabCut for Traceable Optic Disc Segmentation

Optic disc (OD) segmentation is essential for diagnosing ophthalmic pathologies from retinal fundus images. However, prevailing deep learning approaches operate as opaque black boxes, lacking the inference-stage mathematical traceability--a critical requirement for algorithmic auditing and failure analysis in clinical workflows. This paper presents a fully algorithmically traceable and trainable segmentation pipeline that jointly combines superpixel decomposition, hybrid brightness-proximity superpixel scoring, morphological regularization, iterative GrabCut refinement, and elliptical shape fitting. The hyperparameter optimization is formulated as an objective function and solved via Bayesian optimization to eliminate manual parameter tuning. A quantitative evaluation on the Drishti-GS dataset demonstrates that our method achieves a Dice coefficient of 0.9536, matching state-of-the-art performance. By maintaining explicit mathematical transparency across all processing stages, our framework offers a deterministic, traceable alternative to black-box architectures for medical review and debugging.

From crown candidates to neighborhood screening: integrating optical GeoAI and spatial modeling for urban-canopy assessment in Davis, California

Timely urban-canopy information is essential for linking remote sensing with heat, mobility, and neighborhood planning. We developed an optical GeoAI workflow for Davis, California, using 2022 National Agriculture Imagery Program imagery (0.6 m RGB+NIR). DeepForest generated crown candidates; an NDVI threshold, non-maximum suppression, and box-prompted Segment Anything Model (ViT-B) produced a crown-anchored canopy surface. Analyses used the 25.92 km2 Census TIGER municipal boundary and a 100 m grid. The workflow retained 11,741 candidate crowns and mapped 7.71 km2 of canopy (29.8% of the city). On the identical extent, pixel precision was 0.804, pixel recall was 0.873, and 97.4% of candidate centers agreed with the 2022 USDA/CAL FIRE LiDAR-assisted canopy product (IoU 0.719; Dice 0.837; area recovery 108.5%). Approximately 49% of candidates occurred within 15 m of a road. Canopy was inversely associated with Landsat land-surface temperature (Spearman rho = -0.477; partial rho = -0.551 controlling for built probability), and spatial-lag modeling confirmed clear neighborhood structure. Two transparent attention surfaces combined canopy need with thermal and contextual indicators. The framework provides a reproducible, updateable screening layer that complements structural canopy products and municipal inventories while retaining assumptions, data provenance, and spatial diagnostics for planning interpretation.

Real-Time Video Anomaly Detection Using YOLO Pose Estimation and CLIP-Based Semantic Scoring

We propose a lightweight two-stage framework for real-time video anomaly detection. The first stage employs YOLO v11n-pose to detect persons and extract seventeen skeletal keypoints in a single forward pass. The second stage encodes each cropped person region through CLIP ViT-B/32 and computes cosine similarity against predefined textual descriptions of anomalous behaviors. This architecture eliminates the need for optical flow, standalone pose estimators, and density-based scoring modules. Experiments on CUHK Avenue, ShanghaiTech Campus, and a custom indoor dataset collected at Chulalongkorn University demonstrate an end-to-end throughput of approximately 51 FPS on an NVIDIA Titan XP GPU, a 3.36x speedup over the multi-feature baseline, while maintaining frame-level AUROC values of 89.26%, 70.26%, and 84.13%, respectively.
