Non-linear response to electric field in extended Hubbard models

Abstract

The electric-field response of a one-dimensional ring of interacting fermions, where the interactions are described by the extended Hubbard model, is investigated. By using an accurate real-time propagation scheme based on the Chebyshev expansion of the evolution operator, we uncover various non-linear regimes for a range of interaction parameters that allows modeling of metallic and insulating (either charge density wave or spin density wave insulators) rings. The metallic regime appears at the phase boundary between the two insulating phases and provides the opportunity to describe either weakly or strongly correlated metals. We find that the {\it fidelity susceptibility} of the ground state as a function of magnetic flux piercing the ring provides a very good measure of the short-time response. Even completely different interacting regimes behave in a similar manner at short time-scales as long as the fidelity susceptibility is the same. Depending on the strength of the electric field we find various types of responses: persistent currents in the insulating regime, dissipative regime or damped Bloch-like oscillations with varying frequencies or even irregular in nature. Furthermore, we also consider the dimerization of the ring and describe the response of a correlated band insulator. In this case the distribution of the energy levels is more clustered and the Bloch-like oscillations become even more irregular.

Quantum Well Resonant Tunneling Diode Probe of Correlated States in Twisted Bilayer MoS$_2$

Moiré superlattices formed in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer a versatile platform for exploring emergent quantum phases arising from strong electronic correlations. In this work, we develop a new experimental platform, the quantum well resonant tunneling diode (QWRTD), to probe the electronic landscape of $\approx 56.1^\circ$ twisted bilayer MoS$_2$ (tMoS$_2$). By measuring the differential conductance ($dI/dV_{\text{Probe}}$) as a function of filling factor $ν$ and displacement field $D$, we observe a robust integer insulating feature at $ν= 1$ that persists across the measured displacement field range. Furthermore, we identify a displacement-field-induced fractional insulating feature near $ν= 3/4$ for $D < -75$~mV/nm. Its temperature dependence is consistent with a generalized Wigner crystal interpretation, although the microscopic order remains to be established. These features are also observed in another device with a similar twist angle ($\approx 56.4^\circ$). Our results provide evidence of correlated states in near-AB-stacked tMoS$_2$ and establish QWRTD as a tool for investigating strong correlations in van der Waals heterostructures.

Kitaev, semi-Dirac, and spinon quantum spin Hall liquids on the square-hexagon-dodecagon lattice: A parent projective symmetry group classification

The square-hexagon-dodecagon (SHD) lattice hosts an exactly solvable Kitaev spin liquid, while further-neighbor couplings frustrate its Heisenberg magnet into classically degenerate lines where quantum fluctuations can melt the Néel order. To place this state among the lattice's spin liquids, we classify fermionic parton mean-field states with singlet and spin-orbit-coupled triplet amplitudes by their projective symmetry groups (PSGs). As SHD sites lack site symmetry, its $Z_2$ PSGs are the projective classes of $p6mm$ with time reversal, from which those of every single-orbit $p6mm$ lattice follow. In the idealized Kitaev model, where lattice operations do not rotate spins, these liquids carry a single $Z_2$ PSG descending from the $SU(2)$ Lieb-flux state, and their projections are exact eigenstates. The PSG's sixfold-rotation sign, fixed by the dodecagon flux, doubles all Majorana bands, and the mirrors exclude a chiral phase in any uniform field, so only a sublattice-staggered three-spin term drives the non-Abelian Ising phase. Beyond the Kitaev state, we find a critical semi-Dirac spin liquid, with mean-field correlations $\propto r^{-3}$ along three directions and $r^{-6}$ otherwise, and extended Dirac phases with up to $48$ fermion flavors, among them an $N_f=12$ state whose PSG forbids every singlet mass. Out-of-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya couplings gap the Dirac states of its $U(1)$ class into a mean-field spinon counterpart of the Kane-Mele quantum spin Hall insulator, with spin Chern number $1$ or $3$ and spin-carrying monopoles. Chiral states imply Kalmeyer-Laughlin, semion$\times$semion, and three-fermion orders, rotation-breaking ones show $q\to -q$ asymmetric neutron spectra, and sign-alternating fluxes break time reversal alone. Masses and monopoles in these many-flavor phases and the energetics of frustrated SHD Heisenberg models are natural next steps.

Transport Signatures of a Kinetically Self-Trapped Nagaoka Polaron

Nagaoka polarons are canonical examples of kinetic magnetism. Although their spin structure is well understood, their transport remains unexplored. We compute the dynamical mobility of a single hole in the square-lattice $t$-model using resummation-based quantum Monte Carlo and analytic continuation. Upon cooling, an incoherent Drude-like response gives way to a finite-frequency peak as the dc mobility vanishes. The peak signals an internal mode of a hole confined by its ferromagnetic cloud. Our results establish transport as an incisive probe of polaron formation and kinetic self-trapping.
