Kitaev, semi-Dirac, and spinon quantum spin Hall liquids on the square-hexagon-dodecagon lattice: A parent projective symmetry group classification

Abstract

The square-hexagon-dodecagon (SHD) lattice hosts an exactly solvable Kitaev spin liquid, while further-neighbor couplings frustrate its Heisenberg magnet into classically degenerate lines where quantum fluctuations can melt the Néel order. To place this state among the lattice's spin liquids, we classify fermionic parton mean-field states with singlet and spin-orbit-coupled triplet amplitudes by their projective symmetry groups (PSGs). As SHD sites lack site symmetry, its $Z_2$ PSGs are the projective classes of $p6mm$ with time reversal, from which those of every single-orbit $p6mm$ lattice follow. In the idealized Kitaev model, where lattice operations do not rotate spins, these liquids carry a single $Z_2$ PSG descending from the $SU(2)$ Lieb-flux state, and their projections are exact eigenstates. The PSG's sixfold-rotation sign, fixed by the dodecagon flux, doubles all Majorana bands, and the mirrors exclude a chiral phase in any uniform field, so only a sublattice-staggered three-spin term drives the non-Abelian Ising phase. Beyond the Kitaev state, we find a critical semi-Dirac spin liquid, with mean-field correlations $\propto r^{-3}$ along three directions and $r^{-6}$ otherwise, and extended Dirac phases with up to $48$ fermion flavors, among them an $N_f=12$ state whose PSG forbids every singlet mass. Out-of-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya couplings gap the Dirac states of its $U(1)$ class into a mean-field spinon counterpart of the Kane-Mele quantum spin Hall insulator, with spin Chern number $1$ or $3$ and spin-carrying monopoles. Chiral states imply Kalmeyer-Laughlin, semion$\times$semion, and three-fermion orders, rotation-breaking ones show $q\to -q$ asymmetric neutron spectra, and sign-alternating fluxes break time reversal alone. Masses and monopoles in these many-flavor phases and the energetics of frustrated SHD Heisenberg models are natural next steps.

Dualities and Topological Classification of the $S=1$ Pyrochlore Spin Ice

We derive dual descriptions of the trivial paramagnetic, $\mathbb{Z}_2$-deconfined, and $\mathbb{Z}_2$-confined U(1) Coulomb phases of the $S=1$ pyrochlore spin ice. In the monopole-free limit, the system can be effectively mapped onto 3D $XY$ and Ising loop-gas models depending on the spin anisotropy, which provides theoretical estimates for the phase boundaries, while a macroscopic flux vector classifies the topological sectors via geometric parity rules. Thermal unit monopoles permit endpoints of both directed spin loops and unoriented vacancy loops. The resulting relevant symmetry-breaking fields in the dual $XY$ and Ising descriptions predict rounded crossovers near the monopole-free critical points. Monte Carlo simulations support this monopole-induced rounding.

Opto-criticality in Drude metals near the plasma frequency

Within a simple unified framework of classical electrodynamics that incorporates background bound charges and currents, we have analytically determined the attenuation constant, phase constant, and reflectivity of Drude metals across the full frequency spectrum ($0 < ω< \infty$).Our result for reflectivity agrees well with existing experimental data for both plasmas and seawater. Notably, for highly conductive Drude metals ($ω_p τ\gg 1$), the attenuation constant simplifies to $k_- \simeq \sqrt{\frac{με}{2}} \sqrt{ω_p^2 - ω^2 + \vert{}ω_p^2 - ω^2\vert{}}$ across a broad high-frequency range spanning the plasma frequency $ω_p$. The branch-point singularity at $ω=ω_p$ in this relation reveals opto-critical behavior near $ω=ω_p$ in properties such as the attenuation constant, group velocity, and complex dielectric constant, for which we have determined the corresponding opto-critical exponents. Furthermore, we have incorporated quantum corrections into these optical properties via the Drude-Sommerfeld model with Thomas-Fermi screening.

Theory of High-Temperature Fractional Chern Phases in Monolayer van der Waals Kagome Materials A$_2$T$_3$X$_4$

Fractional Chern insulators bring the fractional quantum Hall effect, with its anyonic excitations, to zero magnetic field. So far they have been realized in moiré materials, where the long superlattice period weakens electronic interactions and confines these phases to cryogenic temperatures. Early proposals instead envisioned topological flat bands on atomic-scale lattices, where fractionalization could persist to far higher temperatures, but a suitable material has been lacking. Here we theoretically identify monolayers of the recently synthesized van der Waals kagome family $\mathrm{A}_2\mathrm{T}_3\mathrm{X}_4$ as such a platform, combining intrinsic topological flat bands and strong Coulomb interactions with gate-tunable carrier density and layer assembly. Exact diagonalization of models derived from density functional theory reveals ferromagnetism over broad filling ranges, supporting diverse fractional Chern insulators, anomalous composite Fermi liquids, and charge-ordered phases. In particular, in $\mathrm{Cs}_2\mathrm{Pd}_3\mathrm{S}_4$, the fractional Chern insulator exhibits a many-body gap of approximately 26 meV in the largest system accessible with band mixing allowing at most one interband electron-hole excitation. Layer assembly further provides a natural route to fractional quantum spin Hall insulators: bilayers with antiparallel magnetizations support this phase at realistic separations. These results identify an experimentally accessible material family in which chemical composition, carrier density, and stacking offer complementary routes to fractionalization at enhanced energy scales and control over topological order.
