Whitehead's Trilogy and the Curvature of Spacetime

My object in the present paper is to: (1) introduce physicists to the life and work of Whitehead; (2) outline the content of his book "The Principle of Relativity"; (3) present Whitehead's basic criticism of the General Theory of Relativity which, to my mind, has never been rebutted or properly appreciated, even by GTR specialists; (4) propose a significant relevant research problem; and (5) summarize some of the rather radical implications of the acceptance of Whitehead's observations, including that spacetime is not curved.

Clarifying Einstein's First Derivation for Mass-Energy Equivalence and Consequently Making Ives's Criticism a Void

We study physical situation considered by Einstein (Ann. Physik, 17, 1905) for his first derivation of mass-energy equivalence. Einstein introduced a constant $C$ in his derivation and reasoning surrounding $C$ and equations containing $C$ caused criticism by Ives. Here we clarify Einstein's derivation and obtain a value for constant $C$. The obtained zero value for $C$ suggests alternative explanation for Einstein's derivation and makes Ives's criticism a void and for which details are also presented in this paper.

From semiconductors to quantum gravity: to centenary of Matvei Bronstein

Investigation of the many-body condensed-matter systems allows us to connect the microscopic physics at the atomic energy scale and the macroscopic physics emerging in the low-energy corner. It gives some hints on the mechanisms of the formation of the physical laws which our Universe obeys. The paper is devoted to the centenary of Matvei Petrovich Bronstein.

Coulomb oscillations as a remedy for the helium atom

The largest failure of the old, Bohr-Sommerfeld quantum theory was with the helium atom. It brought about the theory's demise. I show that this failure does not originate, as commonly believed, with the orbit concept per se. Instead, it was caused by the wrong choice of orbits, compounded by ignorance of the exclusion principle. Choosing semiclassical electron oscillations through the He nucleus, I calculate a singlet ground-state energy that rivals in accuracy with quantum-mechanical results. The same method reveals Bohr's historic energy value as the forbidden triplet ground state--a result beyond the reach of quantum mechanics. At the qualitative level, the concept of Coulomb oscillations visually explains the major features in the He double spectrum in terms of crossed or parallel orbit orientation.

Einstein against quantum mechanics: randomness, ignorance and our ignorance about randomness

Albert Einstein made fundamental contributions to the development of quantum mechanics. However, he was never satisfied with the quantum worldview. In fact, during most of his life he attempted to find inconsistencies and paradoxes within quantum mechanics. His famous quote "God does not play dice" shows how disturbing was to Einstein one of the most important aspects of quantum mechanics: non-determinism. In this paper we will present the basic concepts of quantum mechanics, we will describe Einstein's attempts to destroy it and we will discuss why we can nowadays state that, in this regard, Albert Einstein was not right.

Possible astronomical references in the planning of the Great Hopewell Road

The possible existence of astronomical references in the planning of the so-called Great Hopewell Road, a 90 Kilometres straight road composed of two parallel earthen embankments which, according to recent surveys, likely connected the Hopewell ceremonial centres of Newark and Chillicothe, Ohio, are investigated. It turns out that a very peculiar, although simple, set of astronomical alignments took place in connection with the road during possible periods of its construction. The possibility of a non-fortuitous connection is thus proposed and analysed.

Hans-Juergen Treder and the discovery of confinement in Einstein's unified field theory

In the year 1957, when interest in Einstein's unified field theory was fading away for lack of understanding of its physical content, Treder performed a momentous critical analysis of the possible definitions of the electric four-current in the theory. As an outcome of this scrutiny he was able to prove by the E.I.H. method that properly defined point charges, appended at the right-hand side of the field equation $R_{[[μν],λ]}=0$, interact mutually with Coulomb-like forces, provided that a mutual force independent of distance is present too. This unwanted, but unavoidable addition, could not but lay further disbelief on the efforts initiated by Einstein and Schroedinger one decade earlier. However in 1980 Treder himself recalled that the potential $ϕ=a/r+cr$, found by him in 1957, was the one used by particle physicists to account phenomenologically for the spectrum of bound quark systems like mesons. Exact solutions have later confirmed beyond any doubt that Einstein's unified field theory does account in a simple way, already in classical form, for the confinement of pole charges defined by the four-current first availed of by Treder. In the present paper it is proposed, ad memoriam, a thorough recollection of the article published by Treder in 1957, showing the way kept by him to find what would have been later recognized as confinement in Einstein's unified field theory.

The Scientific Method

The nature of the scientific method is controversial with claims that a single scientific method does not even exist. However the scientific method does exist. It is the building of logical and self consistent models to describe nature. The models are constrained by past observations and judged by their ability to correctly predict new observations and interesting phenomena. The observations exist independent of the models but acquire meaning from their context within a model. Observations must be carefully done and reproducible to minimize errors. Models assumptions that do not lead to testable predictions are rejected as unnecessary.

Two-component Duality and Strings

A phenomenologically successful two-component hadronic duality picture led to Veneziano's amplitude, the fundamental first step to string theory. This picture is briefly recalled and its two components are identified as the open strings (mesons and baryons) and closed strings (Pomeron).

Akhet Khufu: archaeo-astronomical hints at a common project of the two main pyramids of Giza, Egypt

The architectural complexes composed by the two main pyramids of Giza together with their temples are investigated from an inter-disciplinary point of view, taking into account their astronomical alignments as well as their relationships with the visible landscape. Combining already known facts together with new clues, the work strongly supports the idea that the two complexes were conceived as parts of a common project.

The beginning of string theory: a historical sketch

In this note we follow the historical development of the ideas that led to the formulation of String Theory. We start from the inspired guess of Veneziano and its extension to the scattering of $N$ scalar particles, then we describe how the study of its factorization properties allowed to identify the physical spectrum making the string worldsheet manifest and finally we discuss how the critical values of the intercept of the Regge trajectory and of the critical dimension were fixed to 1 and 26.

Where the "it from bit" come from?

In his 1989 essay, John Archibald Wheeler has tried to answer the eternal question of existence. He did it by searching for links between information, physics, and quanta. The main concept emerging from his essay is that "every physical quantity, every it, derives its ultimate significance from bits, binary yes-or-no indications". This concept has been summarized in the catchphrase "it from bit". In the Wheeler's essay, it is possible to read several times the echoes of the philosophy of Niels Bohr. The Danish physicist has pointed out how the quantum and relativistic physics - forcing us to abandon the anchor of the visual reference of common sense - have imposed a greater attention to the language. Bohr did not deny the physical reality, but recognizes that there is always need of a language no matter what a person wants to do. To put it as Carlo Sini, language is the first toolbox that man has at hands to analyze the experience. It is not a thought translated into words, because to think is to operate with signs as reminded us by various philosophers from Leonardo da Vinci to Ludwig Wittgenstein. [...]

Meteors in the Maori Astronomical Traditions of New Zealand

We review the literature for perceptions of meteors in the Maori cultures of New Zealand. We examine representations of meteors in religion, story, and ceremony. We find that meteors are sometimes personified as gods or children, or are seen as omens of death and destruction. The stories we found highlight the broad perception of meteors found throughout the Maori culture and demonstrate that some early scholars conflated the terms comet and meteor.

The Discovery and History of the Dalgaranga Meteorite Crater, Western Australia

The Dalgaranga meteorite crater, 100 km northeast of Yalgoo, Western Australia, was one of the first impact structures identified in Australia, the smallest isolated crater found in Australia, and the only confirmed crater in the world associated with a mesosiderite projectile. 17 years passed before the Dalgaranga meteorites were described in the scientific literature and nearly 40 years passed before a survey of the structure was published. The reasons for the time-gap were never explained and a number of factual errors about the discovery and early history remain uncorrected in the scientific literature. Using historical and archival documents, and discussions with people involved in Dalgaranga research, the reasons for this time gap are explained by a series of minor misidentifications and coincidences. The age of the crater has yet to be determined, but using published data, we estimate the projectile mass to be 500-1000 kg.

New Views of Crystal Symmetry

Already Hermann Grassmann's father Justus (1829, 1830) published two works on the geometrical description of crystals, influenced by the earlier works of C.S. Weiss (1780-1856) on three main crystal forces governing crystal formation. In his 1840 essay on the derivation of crystal shapes from the general law of crystal formation Hermann established the notion of a three-dimensional vectorial system of forces with rational coefficients, that represent the interior crystal structure, regulate its formation, its shape and physical behavior. In the Ausdehnungslehre 1844 (Paragraph 171) he finally writes: I shall conclude this presentation by one of the most beautiful applications which can be made of the science treated, i.e. the application to crystal figures (Scholz, 1996). The geometry of crystals thus certainly influenced the Ausdehnungslehre. In this paper we see how Grassmann's work influenced Clifford's creation of geometric algebras, which in turn leads to a new geometric description of crystal symmetry suitable for modern computer algebra graphics.

Aspects of Gond Astronomy

The Gond community is considered to be one of the most ancient tribes of India with a continuing history of several thousand years. They are also known for their largely isolated history which they have retained through the millennia. Several of their intellectual traditions therefore are a record of parallel aspects of human intellectual growth, and still preserve their original flavour and have not been homogenised by the later traditions of India. In view of this, the Gonds provide a special window to the different currents that constitute contemporary India. In the present study, we summarise their mythology, genetics and script. We then investigate their astronomical traditions and try to understand this community through a survey of 15 Gond villages spread over Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. We show that they have a distinctly different view of the sky from the conventional astronomical ideas encountered elsewhere in India, which is both interesting and informative. We briefly comment on other aspects of their life as culled from our encounters with different members of the Gond community.

Reichenbach's Transcendental Probability

The aim of this article is twofold. First, we shall review and analyse the Neo-Kantian justification for the application of probabilistic concepts in physics that was defended by Hans Reichenbach early in his career, notably in his dissertation of 1916. At first sight this Kantian approach seems to contrast sharply with Reichenbach's later logical positivist, frequentist viewpoint. But, and this is our second goal, we shall attempt to show that there is an underlying continuity in Reichenbach's thought: typical features of his early Kantian conceptions can still be recognized in his later work.
