Comment on: "Vortex-assisted photon count and their magnetic field dependence in single-photon superconducting detectors" by L.N. Bulaevskii, M.J. Graf and V.G. Kogan, Phys. Rev. B 85, 014505 (2012)

In this Comment we show that the statements made in PRB85, 014505 (2012) regarding our work (PRL 100, 227007 (2008))) are incorrect because they result from model artifacts. We address the issues neglected in PRB85, 014505 (2012) and discuss their importance for a more consistent theory of thermally-activated hoping of vortices in thin films and the interpretation of experimental data.

Gap Anisotropy in Iron-Based Superconductors: A Point-Contact Andreev Reflection Study of BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_2$ Single Crystals

We report a systematic investigation on c-axis point-contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) in BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ superconducting single crystals from underdoped to overdoped regions (0.075 $\leq x\leq 0.15$). At optimal doping ($x=0.1$) the PCAR spectrum feature the structures of two superconducting gap and electron-boson coupling mode. In the $s\pm$ scenario, quantitative analysis using a generalized Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formalism with two gaps: one isotropic and another angle dependent, suggest a nodeless state in strong-coupling limit with gap minima on the Fermi surfaces. Upon crossing above the optimal doping ($x > 0.1$), the PCAR spectrum show an in-gap sharp narrow peak at low bias, in contrast to the case of underdoped samples ($x < 0.1$), signaling the onset of deepened gap minima or nodes in the superconducting gap. This result provides evidence of the modulation of the gap amplitude with doping concentration, consistent with the calculations for the orbital dependent pair interaction mediated by the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations.

Penetration of the magnetic field into the twinning plane in the type I and II superconductors

It is demonstrated that in the type I and II superconductors with low-transparent twinning planes (TP) the penetration of external parallel magnetic field into the region of the twinning plane can be energetically favorable. In the type I superconductors the twinning planes become similar to Josephson junctions and the magnetic field penetrates into the center of the TP in the form of soft Josephson-like vortices. This leads to increase in the critical magnetic field values. The corresponding phase diagram in the parameter plane "temperature - magnetic field" essentially differs from the one obtained without taking the finite value of the magnetic field near the TP into account. Comparison between obtained phase diagrams and experimental data for different type I superconductors can allow to estimate the value of the TP transparency, which is the only fitting parameter in our theory.

Triple-gap superconductivity of MgB2 - (La,Sr)MnO3 composite. Which of the gaps is proximity induced?

Interplay of superconductivity and magnetism in a composite prepared of the ferromagnetic half-metallic La_0.67Sr_0.33MnO (LSMO) nanoparticles and the conventional s-wave superconductor MgB_2 has been studied. A few principal effects have been found in bulk samples. With an onset of the MgB_2 superconductivity, a spectacular drop of the sample resistance has been detected and superconductivity has been observed at temperature up to 20K. Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy has been used to measure directly the superconducting energy coupling. For small voltage, an excess current and doubling of the PC's normal state conductance have been found. Conductance peaks corresponding to three energy gaps are clearly observed. Two of these gaps we identified as enhanced Δ_π and Δ_σ gaps originating from the MgB_2; the third gap Δ_{tr} is more than three times larger than the largest MgB_2 gap. The experimental results provide unambiguous evidences for a new type of proximity effect which follows the phase coherency scenario of proximity induced superconductivity. Specifically, at low temperature, the p-wave spin-triplet condensate with pairing energy Δ_{tr} is essentially sustained in LSMO but is incapable to display long-range supercurrent response because of a phase-disordering state. The proximity coupling to MgB_2 restores the long-range phase coherency of the triplet superconducting state, which, in turn, enhances superconducting state of the MgB_2.

Charge Density Wave Instability and Soft Phonon in $A$Pt$_3$P ($A$=Ca, Sr, and La)

The electronic and phonon properties of the platinum pnictide superconductors $A$Pt$_3$P ($A$=Ca, Sr, and La) were studied using first-principles calculations. The spin-orbit coupling effect is significant in LaPt$_3$P but negligible in CaPt$_3$P and SrPt$_3$P, although they all share the same anti-pevroskite structure. Moreover, SrPt$_3$P has been demonstrated to exhibit an unexpected weak charge-density-wave(CDW) instability which is neither simply related to the Fermi-surface nesting nor to the momentum-dependent electron-phonon coupling alone. The instability is absent in CaPt$_3$P and can be quickly suppressed by the external pressure, accompanied with gradual decreases in the phonon softening and BCS $T_c$. Our results suggest SrPt$_3$P as a rare example where superconductivity is enhanced by the CDW fluctuations.

Strong suppression of superconductivity by divalent Ytterbium Kondo-holes in CeCoIn_5

To study the nature of partially substituted Yb-ions in a Ce-based Kondo lattice, we fabricated high quality Ce_{1-x}Yb_xCoIn_5 epitaxial thin films using molecular beam epitaxy. We find that the Yb-substitution leads to a linear decrease of the unit cell volume, indicating that Yb-ions are divalent forming Kondo-holes in Ce_{1-x}Yb_xCoIn_5, and leads to a strong suppression of the superconductivity and Kondo coherence. These results, combined with the measurements of Hall effect, indicate that Yb-ions act as nonmagnetic impurity scatters in the coherent Kondo lattice without serious suppression of the antiferromagnetic fluctuations. These are in stark contrast to previous studies performed using bulk single crystals, which claim the importance of valence fluctuations of Yb-ions. The present work also highlights the suitability of epitaxial films in the study of the impurity effect on the Kondo lattice.

Magnetic field dependence of the critical current in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}/Au/Nb ramp-zigzag Josephson junctions

We study the critical current I_c dependence on applied magnetic field H for multifacet YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}-Au-Nb ramp-type zigzag Josephson junctions. For many experiments one would like to apply a homogeneous field in the junction plane. However, even tiny misalignments can cause drastic deviations from homogeneity. We show this explicitly by measuring and analyzing I_c vs. H for an 8 facet junction, forming an array of 4\times(0-π)-segments. The ramp angle is θ_r=8^\circ. The facet width is 10\,\mum. H is applied under different angles θrelative to the substrate plane and different angles ϕrelative to the in-plane orientation of the zigzags. We find that a homogeneous flux distribution is only achieved for an angle θ_h\approx 1^\circ - 2^\circ and that even a small misalignment \sim 0.1^\circ relative to θ_h can cause a substantial inhomogeneity of the flux density inside the junction, drastically altering its I_c vs. H interference pattern. We also show, that there is a dead angle θ^*_d relative to θ_h of similar magnitude, where the average flux density completely vanishes.

Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo Study of the Enhancement of d-wave Pairing by Charge Inhomogeneity

Striped phases, in which spin, charge, and pairing correlations vary inhomogeneously in the CuO_2 planes, are a known experimental feature of cuprate superconductors, and are also found in a variety of numerical treatments of the two dimensional Hubbard Hamiltonian. In this paper we use determinant Quantum Monte Carlo to show that if a stripe density pattern is imposed on the model, the d-wave pairing vertex is significantly enhanced. We attribute this enhancement to an increase in antiferromagnetic order which is caused by the appearence of more nearly half-filled regions when the doped holes are confined to the stripes. We also observe a π-phase shift in the magnetic order.

Observation of a Phase Transition at 55 K in Single-Crystal CaCu1.7As2

We present the structural, magnetic, thermal and ab-plane electronic transport properties of single crystals of CaCu1.7As2 grown by the self-flux technique that were investigated by powder x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility chi, isothermal magnetization M, specific heat Cp, and electrical resistivity rho measurements as a function of temperature T and magnetic field H. X-ray diffraction analysis of crushed crystals at room temperature confirm the collapsed tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure with \sim 15% vacancies on the Cu sites as previously reported, corresponding to the composition CaCu1.7As2. The chi(T) data are diamagnetic, anisotropic and nearly independent of T. The chi is larger in the ab-plane than along the c-axis, as also observed previously for SrCu2As2 and for pure and doped BaFe2As2. The Cp(T) and rho(T) data indicate metallic sp-band character. In contrast to the chi(T) and Cp(T) data that do not show any evidence for phase transitions below 300 K, the rho(T) data exhibit a sharp increase in slope on cooling below a temperature Tt = 54-56 K, depending on the crystal. The ρ(T) data show no hysteresis on warming and cooling through Tt and the transition appears to be second order. The phase transition may arise from spatial ordering of the vacancies on the Cu sublattice. The Tt is found to be independent of H for H \leq 8 T. A positive magnetoresistance is observed below Tt that increases with decreasing T and attains a value in H = 8.0 T of 8.7% at T = 1.8 K.

Hydrostatic-pressure tuning of magnetic, nonmagnetic and superconducting states in annealed Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

We report on measurements of the magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistance under He-gas pressure on single crystals of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$. We find that for properly heat-treated crystals with modest Co-concentration, $x$ = 0.028, the salient ground states associated with iron-arsenide superconductors, i.e., orthorhombic/antiferromagnetic (o/afm), superconducting, and nonmagnetic collapsed-tetragonal (cT) states can be accessed all in one sample with reasonably small and truly hydrostatic pressure. This is possible owing to the extreme sensitivity of the o/afm (for $T \leq$ $T_{s,N}$) and superconducting ($T \leq T_c$) states against variation of pressure, disclosing pressure coefficients of d$T_{s,N}$/d$P$ = -(1100 $\pm$ 50) K/GPa and d$T_{c}$/d$P$ = -(60 $\pm$ 3) K/GPa, respectively. Systematic investigations of the various phase transitions and ground states via pressure tuning revealed no coexistence of bulk superconductivity (sc) with the o/afm state which we link to the strongly first-order character of the corresponding structural/magnetic transition in this compound. Our results, together with literature results, indicate that preserving fluctuations associated with the o/afm transition to low enough temperatures is vital for sc to form.

Nonlinear field-dependence and f-wave interactions in superfluid 3He

We present results of transverse acoustics studies in superfluid ^{3}He-B at fields up to 0.11 T. Using acoustic cavity interferometry, we observe the Acoustic Faraday Effect for a transverse sound wave propagating along the magnetic field, and we measure Faraday rotations of the polarization as large as 1710^{\circ}. We use these results to determine the Zeeman splitting of the Imaginary Squashing mode, an order parameter collective mode with total angular momentum J=2. We show that the pairing interaction in the f-wave channel is attractive at a pressure of P=6 bar. We also report nonlinear field dependence of the Faraday rotation at frequencies substantially above the mode frequency not accounted for in the theory of the transverse acoustic dispersion relation formulated for frequencies near the mode. Consequently, we have identified the region of validity of the theory allowing us to make corrections to the analysis of Faraday rotation experiments performed in earlier work.

Unconventional quantum oscillations in mesoscopic rings of spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4

Odd-parity, spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 has been found to feature exotic vortex physics including half-flux quanta trapped in a doubly connected sample and the formation of vortex lattices at low fields. The consequences of these vortex states on the low-temperature magnetoresistive behavior of mesoscopic samples of Sr2RuO4 were investigated in this work using ring device fabricated on mechanically exfoliated single crystals of Sr2RuO4 by photolithography and focused ion beam. With the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the in-plane direction, thin-wall rings of Sr2RuO4 were found to exhibit pronounced quantum oscillations with a conventional period of the full-flux quantum even though the unexpectedly large amplitude and the number of oscillations suggest the observation of vortex-flow-dominated magnetoresistance oscillations rather than a conventional Little-Parks effect. For rings with a thick wall, two distinct periods of quantum oscillations were found in high and low field regimes, respectively, which we argue to be associated with the "lock-in" of a vortex lattice in these thick-wall rings. No evidence for half-flux-quantum resistance oscillations were identified in any sample measured so far without the presence of an in-plane field.

Resolving the effects of frequency dependent damping and quantum phase diffusion in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ Josephson junctions

We report on the study of the phase dynamics of high critical temperature superconductor Josephson junctions. We realized YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) grain boundary (GB) biepitaxial junctions in the submicron scale, using low loss substrates, and analyzed their dissipation by comparing the transport measurements with Monte Carlo simulations. The behavior of the junctions can be fitted using a model based on two quality factors, which results in a frequency dependent damping. Moreover, our devices can be designed to have Josephson energy of the order of the Coulomb energy. In this unusual energy range, phase delocalization strongly influences the device's dynamics, promoting the transition to a quantum phase diffusion regime. We study the signatures of such a transition by combining the outcomes of Monte Carlo simulations with the analysis of the device's parameters, the critical current and the temperature behavior of the low voltage resistance $R_0$.

Effective interactions and fluctuation effects in spin-singlet superfluids

We derive and evaluate one-loop functional flow equations for the effective interactions, self-energy and gap function in spin-singlet superfluids. The flow is generated by a fermionic frequency cutoff, which is supplemented by an external pairing field to treat divergencies associated with the Goldstone boson. To parametrize the singular momentum and frequency dependences of the effective interactions, the Nambu interaction vertex is decomposed in charge, magnetic, and normal and anomalous pairing channels. The one-loop flow solves reduced (mean-field) models for superfluidity exactly, and captures also important fluctuation effects. The Ward identity from charge conservation is generally violated, but can be enforced by projecting the flow. Applying the general formalism to the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model, we obtain detailed results on the momentum and frequency dependences of the effective interactions for weak and moderate bare interactions. The gap is reduced by fluctuations, with a stronger reduction at weaker interactions, as expected.

Understanding the re-entrant superconducting phase diagram of an iron-pnictide Ca$_4$Al$_2$O$_6$Fe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

Recently, a very rich phase diagram has been obtained for an iron-based superconductor Ca4Al2O6Fe2(As1-xPx)2. It has been revealed that nodeless (x=0) and nodal (x = 1) superconductivity are separated by an antiferromagnetic phase. Here we study the origin of this peculiar phase diagram using a five orbital model constructed from first principles band calculation, and applying the fluctuation exchange approximation assuming spin fluctuation mediated pairing. Based on the calculation results, we propose a scenario where the frustration in momentum space degrades superconductivity in the intermediate x regime, while antiferromangetism takes place due to a very good nesting. In order to see whether the present theoretical scenario is consistent with the actual nature of the competition between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism, we also perform hydrostatic pressure experiment for Ca4Al2O6Fe2(As1-xPx)2. In the intermediate x regime where antiferromagnetism occurs at ambient pressure, applying hydrostatic pressure smears out the antiferromagnetic transition, but superconductivity does not take place. This supports our scenario that superconductivity is suppressed by the momentum space frustration in the intermediate x regime, apart from the presence of the antiferromangnetism.

Spatially Resolved Magnetization in the Bose-Einstein Condensed State of BaCuSi2O6: Evidence for Imperfect Frustration

In order to understand the nature of the two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) phase in BaCuSi2O6, we performed detailed 63Cu and 29Si NMR above the critical magnetic field, Hc1= 23.4 T. The two different alternating layers present in the system have very different local magnetizations close to Hc1; one is very weak, and its size and field dependence are highly sensitive to the nature of inter-layer coupling. Its precise value could only be determined by "on-site" 63Cu NMR, and the data are fully reproduced by a model of interacting hard-core bosons in which the perfect frustration associated to tetragonal symmetry is slightly lifted, leading to the conclusion that the population of the less populated layers is not fully incoherent but must be partially condensed.

Hysteretic superconducting resistive transition in Ba0.07K0.93Fe2As2

We have observed hysteresis in superconducting resistive transition curves of Ba$_{0.07}$K$_{0.93}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c\sim$8 K) below about 1 K for in-plane fields. The hysteresis is not observed as the field is tilted away from the $ab$ plane by 20$^{\circ}$ or more. The temperature and angle dependences of the upper critical field indicate a strong paramagnetic effect for in-plane fields. We suggest that the hysteresis can be attributed to a first-order superconducting transition due to the paramagnetic effect. Magnetic torque data are also shown.
