Polarization-Resolved Photon Statistics of Cavity Quantum Materials

By forming hybrid light-matter states, optical cavities offer a route for engineering material properties, however, unambiguously probing the effects of light-matter coupling remains difficult. Here, we show that the polarization-resolved statistics of photons transmitted through a cavity, measurable via $g^{(2)}$, provide one such diagnostic. By relating $g^{(2)}$ to matter correlation functions such as the Raman structure factor, we link photon bunching and antibunching to material properties. By applying this method to the stripy-to-antiferromagnetic transition in the Kitaev-Heisenberg spin model, we find that polarization-dependent patterns of bunching and antibunching encode the magnetic point-group symmetries of each phase and characterize the behavior at the phase boundary. Finally, we predict measuring $g^{(2)}$ for output photon pairs polarized orthogonal to the input field will isolate higher-order light-matter scattering processes that probe higher-order material correlations.

Anisotropic magnetoresistance of two-dimensional Rashba systems with in-plane Zeeman field and point-like disorder

We study the dc conductivity of a two-dimensional Rashba system with an in-plane Zeeman field and delta-correlated scalar disorder. We show that, although the field deforms the two helicity Fermi contours and rotates the spin texture, it does not produce anisotropic magnetoresistance in the leading quasiclassical conductivity. The result follows from a geometric identity for the total area occupied by the two helicity sheets. A density Ward identity fixes the spin-vector part of the Born self-energy to the derivative of the total particle density with respect to the field. This derivative vanishes, because the total area enclosed by the two Rashba-Zeeman sheets is independent of the in-plane field. The Born self-energy is therefore scalar and field independent, and the quasiparticle lifetime stays isotropic. The same occupied-area identity controls transport: the leading impurity ladder reduces the current vertex to the parabolic velocity, and the diagonal intraband Kubo conductivity collapses onto the two-sheet occupied area and is field independent as well. Thus, point-like nonmagnetic impurities produce neither angular anisotropy nor field-magnitude dependence in the leading diagonal two-sheet quasiclassical conductivity. Any residual AMR from delta-correlated disorder must originate from corrections outside this sector.

High harmonics from backscattering of delocalized electrons

It is shown that electron backscattering can enhance high-harmonic generation in periodic systems with broken translational symmetry. Paradigmatically, we derive for a finite chain of atoms the harmonic cutoff due to electrons backscattered from the edges of the chain and demonstrate a maximum in the harmonic yield if twice the quiver amplitude of the driven electrons equals the chain length. For an intuitive understanding of our quantum results we develop a refined semiclassical trajectory model with finite electron-hole separation after tunneling. We demonstrate that the same "tunnel exit" also holds for interband harmonics in conventional periodic solid-state systems.

Repulsive long-range forces between anisotropic atoms and dielectrics

We investigate long-range forces between atoms with anisotropic electric polarizability interacting with dielectrics having anisotropic permittivity in the weak-coupling approximation. Unstable configurations in which the force between the objects is repulsive are constructed. Such configurations exist for three anisotropic atoms as well as for an anisotropic atom above a dielectric plate with a hole whose permittivity is anisotropic. Apart from the absolute magnitude of the force, the dependence on the configuration is qualitatively the same as for metallic objects for which the anisotropy is a purely geometric effect. In the weak limit closed analytic expressions for rather complicated configurations are obtained. The non-monotonic dependence of the interaction energy on separation is related to the fact that the electromagnetic Green's dyadic is not positive definite. The analysis in the weak limit is found to also semi-quantitatively explain the dependence of Casimir forces on the orientation of anisotropic dielectrics observed experimentally. Contrary to the scalar case, irreducible electromagnetic three-body energies can change sign. We trace this to the fact that the electromagnetic Green's dyadic is not positive definite.

Topological Superfluid Transition Induced by Periodically Driven Optical Lattice

We propose a scenario to create topological superfluid in a periodically driven two-dimensional square optical lattice. We study the phase diagram of a spin-orbit coupled s-wave pairing superfluid in a periodically driven two-dimensional square optical lattice. We find that a phase transition from a trivial superfluid to a topological superfluid occurs when the potentials of the optical lattices are periodically changed. The topological phase is called Floquet topological superfluid and can host Majorana fermions.

Memory Effects in Spontaneous Emission Processes

We consider a quantum-mechanical analysis of spontaneous emission in terms of an effective two-level system with a vacuum decay rate $Γ_0$ and transition angular frequency $ω_A$. Our analysis is in principle exact, even though presented as a numerical solution of the time-evolution including memory effects. The results so obtained are confronted with previous discussions in the literature. In terms of the {\it dimensionless} lifetime $τ= tΓ_0$ of spontaneous emission, we obtain deviations from exponential decay of the form ${\cal O} (1/τ)$ for the decay amplitude as well as the previously obtained asymptotic behaviors of the form ${\cal O} (1/τ^2)$ or ${\cal O} (1/τ\ln^2τ)$ for $τ\gg 1 $. The actual asymptotic behavior depends on the adopted regularization procedure as well as on the physical parameters at hand. We show that for any reasonable range of $τ$ and for a sufficiently large value of the required angular frequency cut-off $ω_c$ of the electro-magnetic fluctuations, i.e. $ω_c \gg ω_A$, one obtains either a ${\cal O} (1/τ)$ or a ${\cal O} (1/τ^2)$ dependence. In the presence of physical boundaries, which can change the decay rate with many orders of magnitude, the conclusions remains the same after a suitable rescaling of parameters.

Resonances in dissipative optomechanics with nanoparticles: Sorting, speed rectification and transverse cooling

The interaction between dielectric particles and a laser-driven optical cavity gives rise to both conservative and dissipative dynamics, which can be used to levitate, trap and cool nanoparticles. We analytically and numerically study a two-mode setup in which the optical potentials along the cavity axis cancel, so that the resulting dynamics is almost purely dissipative. For appropriate detunings of the laser-drives, this dissipative optomechanical dynamics can be used to sort particles according to their size, to rectify their velocities and to enhance transverse cooling.

Effect of screening on spectroscopic properties of Li-like ions in plasma environment

This work presents accurate {\it ab initio} investigations of various spectroscopic properties of a few Li-like ions in presence of a plasma environment within the Debye screening potential. The coupled-cluster theory in the relativistic framework has been employed to compute ionization potentials, excitation energies, electric dipole oscillator strengths, and electric quadrupole transition probabilities of Li-like C$^{3+}$, N$^{4+}$, and O$^{5+}$ ions. The unretarded Breit interaction has been implemented to increase the accuracy of the calculations. The effects of ion density and temperature on the ionization potentials, excitation energies, electric dipole oscillator strengths, and electric quadrupole transition probabilities have been investigated in the plasma environment. It is found that the plasma screening leads to a sharp decrease in the ionization potential as the screening strength increases. With increasing strength, the oscillator strengths associated with 2$s ^{2}S_{1/2}$$\rightarrow2 p ^{2}P_{1/2, 3/2}$ transitions increase, whereas the transition probabilities associated with 3$d ^2D_{3/2, 5/2}$$\rightarrow2 s ^2S_{1/2}$ transitions decrease.

Mesoscopic dipolar quantum crystals

The ground state of a two-dimensional, harmonically confined mesoscopic assembly of up to thirty polar molecules is studied by computer simulations. As the strength of the confining trap is increased, clusters evolve from superfluid, to supersolid, to insulating crystals. For strong confinement, the crystalline structure can be predicted based on classical energetics. However, clusters of specific numbers of particles (i.e., N=12 and N=19) display a {\it non-classical crystalline structure}, stabilized by quantum effects, in an intermediate range of confinement strength. In these cases, coexistence of quantum and classical crystalline configurations is observed at finite temperature.

Two-mode back-action-evading measurements in cavity optomechanics

We study theoretically a three-mode optomechanical system where two mechanical oscillators are coupled to a single cavity mode. By using two-tone (i.e. amplitude-modulated) driving of the cavity, it is possible to couple the cavity to a single collective quadrature of the mechanical oscillators. In such a way, a back-action-evading measurement of the collective mechanical quadrature is possible. We discuss how this can allow one to measure both quadratures of a mechanical force beyond the full quantum limit, paying close attention to the role of dissipation and experimental imperfections. We also describe how this scheme allows one to generate steady-state mechanical entanglement; namely, one can conditionally prepare an entangled, two-mode squeezed mechanical state. This entanglement can be verified directly from the measurement record by applying a generalized version of Duan's inequality; we also discuss how feedback can be used to produce unconditional entanglement.

Exploring exchange mechanisms with a cold atom gas

Fermionic atoms trapped in a double well potential are an ideal setting to study fundamental exchange mechanisms. We use exact diagonalization and complementary analytic calculations to demonstrate that two trapped fermions deliver a minimal model of the direct exchange mechanism. This is an ideal quantum simulator of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet, exposes the competition between covalent and ionic bonding, and can create, manipulate, and detect quantum entanglement. Three trapped atoms form a faithful simulator of the double exchange mechanism that is the fundamental building block behind many Heisenberg ferromagnets.

Optomechanically induced transparency in membrane-in-the-middle setup at room temperature

We demonstrate the analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency in a room temperature cavity optomechanics setup formed by a thin semitransparent membrane within a Fabry-Pérot cavity. Due to destructive interference, a weak probe field is completely reflected by the cavity when the pump beam is resonant with the motional red sideband of the cavity. Under this condition we infer a significant slowing down of light of hundreds of microseconds, which is easily tuned by shifting the membrane along the cavity axis. We also observe the associated phenomenon of electromagnetically induced amplification which occurs due to constructive interference when the pump is resonant with the blue sideband.

Exactly solvable two-level quantum systems and Landau-Zener interferometry

I present a simple algorithm based on a type of partial reverse-engineering that generates an unlimited number of exact analytical solutions to the Schrodinger equation for a general time-dependent two-level Hamiltonian. I demonstrate this method by deriving new exact solutions corresponding to fast control pulses that contain arbitrarily many tunable parameters. It is shown that the formalism is naturally suited to generating analytical control protocols that perform precise non-adiabatic rapid passage and Landau-Zener interferometry near the quantum speed limit. A general, exact formula for Landau-Zener interference patterns is derived.

Topological aspects in the photonic crystal analog of single-particle transport in quantum Hall systems

We present a perturbative approach to derive the semiclassical equations of motion for the two-dimensional electron dynamics under the simultaneous presence of static electric and magnetic fields, where the quantized Hall conductance is known to be directly related to the topological properties of translationally invariant magnetic Bloch bands. In close analogy to this approach, we develop a perturbative theory of two-dimensional photonic transport in gyrotropic photonic crystals to mimic the physics of quantum Hall systems. We show that a suitable permittivity grading of a gyrotropic photonic crystal is able to simulate the simultaneous presence of analog electric and magnetic field forces for photons, and we rigorously derive the topology-related term in the equation for the electromagnetic energy velocity that is formally equivalent to the electronic case. A possible experimental configuration is proposed to observe a bulk photonic analog to the quantum Hall physics in graded gyromagnetic photonic crystals.

Uncertainty principle in a cavity at finite temperature

We employ a dressed state approach to perform a study on the behavior of the uncertainty principle for a system in a heated cavity. We find, in a small cavity for a given temperature, an oscillatory behavior of the momentum--coordinate product, $(Δ\,p)\,(Δ\,q)$, which attains periodically finite absolute minimum (maximum) values, no matter large is the elapsed time. This behavior is in a sharp contrast with what happens in free space, in which case, the product $(Δ\,p)\,(Δ\,q)$ tends asymptotically, for each temperature, to a constant value, independent of time.

Tomography of a spin qubit in a double quantum dot

We investigate a range of methods to perform tomography in a solid-state qubit device, for which a priori initialization and measurement of the qubit is restricted to a single basis of the Bloch sphere. We explore and compare several methods to acquire precise descriptions of additional states and measurements, quantifying both stochastic and systematic errors, ultimately leading to a tomographically-complete set that can be subsequently used in process tomography. We focus in detail on the example of a spin qubit formed by the singlet-triplet subspace of two electron spins in a GaAs double quantum dot, although our approach is quite general.

Nonlinear-dissipation-induced Entanglement of Coupled Nonlinear Oscillators

The quantum dynamics of two weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators is analytically and numerically investigated in the context of nonlinear dissipation. The latter facilitates the creation and preservation of non-classical steady states. Starting from a microscopic description of two oscillators individually interacting with their dissipative environments, it is found that in addition to energy relaxation, dephasing arises due to the mutual coupling. Using the negativity as an entanglement measure, it is shown that the coupling entangles the oscillators in the long-time limit. For finite temperatures, entanglement sudden death and rebirth are observed.

Motional Entanglement with Trapped Ions and a Nanomechanical Resonator

We study the entangling power of a nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) simultaneously interacting with two separately trapped ions. To highlight this entangling capability, we consider a special regime where the ion-ion coupling does not generate entanglement in the system, and any resulting entanglement will be the result of the NEMS acting as an entangling device. We study the dynamical behavior of the bipartite NEMS-induced ion-ion entanglement as well as the tripartite entanglement of the whole system (ions+NEMS). We found some quite remarkable phenomena in this hybrid system. For instance, the two trapped ions initially uncorrelated and prepared in coherent states can become entangled by interacting with a nanoelectromechanical resonator (also prepared in a coherent state) as soon as the ion-NEMS coupling achieve a certain value, and this can be controlled by external voltage gate on the NEMS device.
