Geometry of the shears mechanism in nuclei

The geometry of the shears mechanism in nuclei is derived from the nuclear shell model. This is achieved by taking the limit of large angular momenta (classical limit) of shell-model matrix elements.

3PF2 pairing in high-density neutron matter

The onset of the 3PF2 superfluid phase in high-density neutron matter is studied within the BCS framework with two and three body forces. Owing to the strong correlations the energy gap is so sizeably quenched as to demand to reconsider the role of superfluidity in neutron-star phenomena.

Low energy collective modes of deformed superfluid nuclei within the finite amplitude method

Background: The major challenge for nuclear theory is to describe and predict global properties and collective modes of atomic nuclei. Of particular interest is the response of the nucleus to a time-dependent external field that impacts the low-energy multipole and beta-decay strength. Purpose: We propose a method to compute low-lying collective modes in deformed nuclei within the finite amplitude method (FAM) based on the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA). By using the analytic property of the response function, we find the QRPA amplitudes by computing the residua of the FAM amplitudes by means of a contour integration around the QRPA poles in a complex frequency plane. Methods: We use the superfluid nuclear density functional theory with Skyrme energy density functionals, FAM-QRPA approach, and the conventional matrix formulation of the QRPA (MQRPA). Results: We demonstrate that the complex-energy FAM-QRPA method reproduces low-lying collective states obtained within the conventional matrix formulation of the QRPA theory. Illustrative calculations are performed for the isoscalar monopole strength in deformed 24Mg and for low-lying K = 0 quadrupole vibrational modes of deformed Yb and Er isotopes. Conclusions: The proposed FAM-QRPA approach allows one to efficiently calculate low-lying collective modes in spherical and deformed nuclei throughout the entire nuclear landscape, including shape-vibrational excitations, pairing vibrational modes, and beta-decay rates.

Shape evolution and the role of intruder configurations in Hg isotopes within the interacting boson model based on a Gogny energy density functional

The interacting boson model with configuration mixing, with parameters derived from the self-consistent mean-field calculation employing the microscopic Gogny energy density functional, is applied to the systematic analysis of the low-lying structure in Hg isotopes. Excitation energies, electromagnetic transition rates, deformation properties, and ground-state properties of the $^{172-204}$Hg nuclei are obtained by mapping the microscopic deformation energy surface onto the equivalent IBM Hamiltonian in the boson condensate. These results point to the overall systematic trend of the transition from the near spherical vibrational state in lower-mass Hg nuclei close to $^{172}$Hg, onset of intruder prolate configuration as well as the manifest prolate-oblate shape coexistence around the mid-shell nucleus $^{184}$Hg, weakly oblate deformed structure beyond $^{190}$Hg up to the spherical vibrational structure toward the near semi-magic nucleus $^{204}$Hg, as observed experimentally. The quality of the present method in the description of the complex shape dynamics in Hg isotopes is examined.

Effective double-beta-decay operator for 76Ge and 82Se

We use diagrammatic many-body perturbation theory in combination with low-momentum interactions derived from chiral effective field theory to construct effective shell-model transition operators for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of 76Ge and 82Se. We include all unfolded diagrams to first- and second-order in the interaction and all singly folded diagrams that can be constructed from them. The resulting effective operator, which accounts for physics outside the shell-model space, increases the nuclear matrix element by about 20% in 76Ge and 30% in 82Se.

Nuclear rho transparencies in a relativistic Glauber model

[Background] The recent Jefferson Lab data for the nuclear transparency in $ρ^ {0}$ electroproduction have the potential to settle the scale for the onset of color transparency (CT) in vector meson production. [Purpose] To compare the data to calculations in a relativistic and quantum-mechanical Glauber model and to investigate whether they are in accordance with results including color transparency given that the computation of $ρ$-nucleus attenuations is subject to some uncertainties. [Method] We compute the nuclear transparencies in a multiple-scattering Glauber model and account for effects stemming from color transparency, from $ρ$-meson decay, and from short-range correlations (SRC) in the final-state interactions (FSI). [Results] The robustness of the model is tested by comparing the mass dependence and the hard-scale dependence of the $A(e,e'p)$ nuclear transparencies with the data. The hard-scale dependence of the $(e,e' ρ^ {0})$ nuclear transparencies for $^ {12}$C and $^ {56}$Fe are only moderately affected by SRC and by $ρ^ {0}$-decay. [Conclusions] The RMSGA calculations confirm the onset of CT at four-momentum transfers of a few (GeV/c)$^2$ in $ρ$ meson electroproduction data. A more precise determination of the scale for the onset of CT is hampered by the lack of precise input in the FSI and $ρ$-meson decay calculations.

Dijet asymmetry in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV within a multiphase transport model

Within a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model, dijet asymmetry is studied in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV. It is found that a large dijet asymmetry ($A_{J}$) is produced by strong interactions between jets and partonic matter. It is demonstrated that hadronization and final-state hadronic rescatterings have little effects on $A_{J}$. The final $A_{J}$ is found to be driven by both initial $A_{J}$ and partonic jet energy loss, which is consistent with an increasing jet energy loss in a hot and strongly interacting partonic medium in more central Pb+Pb collisions.

Alternative Scenarios of Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions: II. Particle Production

Particle production in relativistic collisions of heavy nuclei is analyzed in a wide range of incident energies 2.7 GeV $\le \sqrt{s_{NN}}\le$ 62.4 GeV. The analysis is performed within the three-fluid model employing three different equations of state (EoS): a purely hadronic EoS, an EoS with the first-order phase transition and that with a smooth crossover transition. It is found that the hadronic scenario fails to reproduce experimental yields of antibaryons (strange and nonstrange), starting already from lower SPS energies, i.e. $\sqrt{s_{NN}}>$ 5 GeV. Moreover, at energies above the top SPS one, i.e. $\sqrt{s_{NN}}>$ 17.4 GeV, the mid-rapidity densities predicted by the hadronic scenario considerably exceed the available RHIC data on all species. At the same time the deconfinement-transition scenarios reasonably agree (to a various extent) with all the data. The present analysis demonstrates certain advantage of the deconfinement-transition EoS's. However, all scenarios fail to reproduce the strangeness enhancement in the incident energy range near 30A GeV (i.e. a horn anomaly in the $K^+/π^+$ ratio) and yields of $ϕ$-mesons at 20A--40A GeV.

Initial state geometry and the role of hydrodynamics in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and deuteron-nucleus collisions

We apply the successful Monte Carlo Glauber and IP-Glasma initial state models of heavy ion collisions to the much smaller size systems produced in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and deuteron- nucleus collisions. We observe a significantly greater sensitivity of the initial state geometry to details of multi-particle production in these models compared to nucleus-nucleus collisions. In particular, we find that the size of the system produced in p+A collisions is very similar to the one produced in p+p collisions, and predict comparable Hanbury-Brown-Twiss radii in the absence of flow in both systems. Differences in the eccentricities computed in the models are large, while differences amongst the generated flow coefficients v_2 and v_3 are smaller. For a large number of participants in proton-lead collisions, the v_2 generated in the IP-Glasma model is comparable to the value obtained in proton-proton collisions. Viscous corrections to flow are large over characteristic lifetimes in the smaller size systems. In contrast, viscous contributions are significantly diminished over the longer space-time evolution of a heavy ion collision.

Nuclear shadowing in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei: a closer look

The measurement of the nuclear structure function $F_2^A (x,Q^2)$ at the future electron-ion collider (EIC) will be of great relevance to understand the origin of the nuclear shadowing and to probe gluon saturation effects. Currently there are several phenomenological models, based on very distinct approaches, which describe the scarce experimental data quite successfully. One of main uncertainties comes from the schemes used to include the effects associated to the multiple scatterings and to unitarize the cross section. In this paper we compare the predictions of three different unitarization schemes of the nuclear structure function which use the same theoretical input to describe the projectile-nucleon interaction. In particular, we consider as input the predictions of the Color Glass Condensate formalism, which reproduce the inclusive and diffractive $ep$ HERA data. Our results suggest that the experimental analysis of $F_2^A$ will be able to discriminate between the unitarization schemes.

Quasielastic and multinucleon excitations in antineutrino-nucleus interactions

We investigate the MiniBooNE recent data on the antineutrino nucleus interaction, using the same theoretical description with the same parameters as in previous works on neutrino interactions. The double differential quasielastic cross section, which is free from the energy reconstruction problem, is well reproduced by our model once the multinucleon excitations are incorporated. A similar agreement is achieved for the Q^2 distribution.

Potential dangers when phase shifts are used as a link between experiment and QCD

Luscher has shown that in single channel problem (elastic region below first inelastic threshold) there exists a direct link between the discrete value of the energy in a finite QCD volume and the scattering phase shift at the same energy. However, when the extension of the theorem is made to the baryon resonance sector (multi-channel situation in the inelastic region above first inelastic threshold), eigenphases (diagonal multi-channel quantities) replace phase shifts (single channel quantities). It is necessary to stress that the renowned pi/2 resonance criterion is formulated for eigenphases and not for phase shifts, so the resonance extracting procedure has to be applied with utmost care. The potential instability of extracting eigenphases from experimental data which occurs if insufficient number of channels is used can be reduced if a trace function which explicitly takes multi-channel aspect of the problem into account is used instead of single-channel phase shifts.

Tensor-force effects on single-particle levels and proton bubble structure around the $Z$ or $N=20$ magic number

Applying the semi-realistic $NN$ interactions that include realistic tensor force to the Hartree-Fock calculations, we investigate tensor-force effects on the single-particle levels in the Ca isotopes. The semi-realistic interaction successfully describes the experimental difference between $\varepsilon(p1s_{1/2})$ and $\varepsilon(p0d_{3/2})$ (denoted by $\mathitΔ\varepsilon_{13}$) both at $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca, confirming importance of the tensor force. The tensor force plays a role in the $N$-dependence of $\mathitΔ\varepsilon_{13}$ also in neutron-rich Ca nuclei. While the $p1s_{1/2}$-$p0d_{3/2}$ inversion is predicted in heavier Ca nuclei as in $^{48}$Ca, it takes place only in $N\geq 46$, delayed by the tensor force. We further investigate possibility of proton bubble structure in Ar, which is suggested by the $p1s_{1/2}$-$p0d_{3/2}$ inversion in $^{48}$Ca and more neutron-rich Ca nuclei, by the spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calculations. Even with the inversion at $^{48}$Ca the pair correlation prohibits prominent bubble distribution in $^{46}$Ar. Bubble in Ar is unlikely also near neutron drip line because either of unboundness or of deformation. However, $^{34}$Si remains a candidate for proton bubble structure, owing to large shell gap between $p1s_{1/2}$ and $p0d_{5/2}$.

Energy dependence of pion in-medium effects on π^-/π^+ ratio in heavy-ion collisions

Within the framework of a thermal model with its parameters fitted to the results from an isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU) transport model, we study the pion in-medium effect on the charged-pion ratio in heavy-ion collisions at various energies. We find that due to the cancellation between the effects from pion-nucleon s-wave and p-wave interactions in nuclear medium, the π^-/π^+ ratio generally decreases after including the pion in-medium effect. The effect is larger at lower collision energies as a result of narrower pion spectral functions at lower temperatures.

Improved convergence of chiral effective field theory for 1S0 of NN scattering

It is argued that the fine-tuning due to the unnaturally large, generalized effective range in the 1S0 channel of NN scattering must be incorporated in order for one to obtain satisfactory convergence for chiral effective field theory. Without the proposition of perturbative one-pion exchange, an effective field theory with the spin-0, isospin-1 dibaryon is developed to account for this fine-tuning, and is demonstrated up to O(Q) where the leading irreducible two-pion exchange arises. The approach shown in the paper results in rapid convergence of the 1S0 partial-wave amplitude.

Core-excitation three-cluster model description of ^8He and ^10He

We introduce a new model applying to the core-nucleus and two-neutron system. The Faddeev equations of 6He-n-n and 8He-n-n systems for 8He and 10He are solved, respectively. The potential of the subsystem in the model has been determined to make a coupling both of the ground state and the excited one inside the core nucleus. By a similar mechanism the three-nucleon system is solved with the three-body force originating from an isobar excitation of the nucleon. Inputting only the information of subsystem energy levels and widths we get the coupling constants of rank 1 Yamaguchi potential between the core nucleus and neutron. We calculate the Faddeev three-cluster equations to obtain the low-lying energy levels of 8He and 10He. The 1- state of 10He, which has not been detected yet in experiments, is located in the energy level between the 0+ and 2+ states.

Constraints on a possible dibaryon from combined analysis of the $pn \to d π^+ π^-$ and $pn \to pn π^+ π^-$ cross sections

We use recent data that show a narrow peak around $\sqrt{s}=2.37\ \text{GeV}$ in the $pn \to d π^+ π^-$ cross section, with about double strength at the peak than in the analogous $pn \to d π^0 π^0$ reaction, and, assuming that it is due to the excitation of a dibaryon resonance, we evaluate the cross section for the $pn \to pn π^+ π^-$ reaction, with the final $pn$ unbound but with the same quantum numbers as the deuteron. We use accurate techniques to determine the final state interaction in the case of the $pn$ forming a deuteron or a positive energy state, which allow us to get the $pn \to pn π^+ π^-$ cross section with $pn$ in I=0 and S=1, that turns out to be quite close or saturates the experimental $pn \to pn π^+ π^-$ total cross section around $\sqrt{s} = 2.37\ \text{GeV}$, depending on the angular momentum assumed. We then parametrize a background with different methods, and the sum of the resonant and background contributions is fitted to present data. The resulting cross section exceeds the experimental results in the region of the resonant peak, showing a problem in the dibaryon hypothesis. Yet, in view of the dispersion of present experimental data, and the scarce information around $\sqrt{s} = 2.37\ \text{GeV}$, a call is made for precise measurements of the $pn \to pnπ^+π^-$ reaction around this energy, to further clarify this issue.

Deformation and cluster structures in $^{12}$C studied with configuration mixing using Skyrme interactions

We report an investigation of the structure of $^{12}$C nucleus employing a newly developed configuration-mixing method. In the three-dimensional coordinate-space representation, we generate a number of Slater determinants with various correlated structures using the imaginary-time algorithm. We then diagonalize a many-body Hamiltonian with the Skyrme interaction in the space spanned by the Slater determinants with parity and angular momentum projections. Our calculation reasonably describes the ground and excited states of $^{12}$C nucleus, both for shell-model-like and cluster-like states. The excitation energies and transition strengths of the ground-state rotational band are well reproduced. Negative parity excited states, $1_1^-$, $2_1^-$, and $3_1^-$, are also reasonably described. The second and third $0^+$ states, $0_2^+$ and $0_3^+$, appear at around 8.8 MeV and 15 MeV, respectively. The $0_2^+$ state shows a structure consistent with former results of the α-cluster models, however, the calculated radius of the $0_2^+$ state is smaller than those calculations. The three-α linear-chain configuration dominates in the $0_3^+$ state.
