Electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in effective field theory

We calculate the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon to third chiral order in manifestly Lorentz-invariant effective field theory. The rho and omega mesons as well as the Delta(1232) resonance are included as explicit dynamical degrees of freedom. To obtain a self-consistent theory with respect to constraints we consider the proper relations among the couplings of the effective Lagrangian. For the purpose of generating a systematic power counting, the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme is applied in combination with the small-scale expansion. The results for the electric and magnetic Sachs form factors are analyzed in terms of experimental data and compared to previous findings in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. The pion-mass dependence of the form factors is briefly discussed.

Evaluation of the gn-->pi-p differential cross sections in the Delta-isobar region

Differential cross sections for the process gn-->pi-p have been extracted from MAMI-B measurements of gd-->pi-pp, accounting for final-state interaction effects, using a diagrammatic technique taking into account the NN and piN final-state interaction amplitudes. Results are compared to previous measurements of the inverse process, pi-p--> ng, and recent multipole analyses.

Flavor decomposition of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors

Background: The spatial distribution of charge and magnetization in the proton and neutron are encoded in the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. The form factors are all approximated by a simple dipole function, normalized to the charge or magnetic moment of the nucleon. The differences between the proton and neutron form factors and the deviation of GEn from zero are sensitive to the difference between up- and down-quark contributions to the form factors. Methods: We combine recent measurements of the neutron form factors with updated extractions of the proton form factors, accounting for two-photon exchange corrections and including an estimate of the uncertainties for all of the form factors to obtain a complete set of measurements up to Q^2 approximately 4 (GeV/c)^2. We use this to extract the up- and down-quark contributions which we compare to recent fits and calculations. Results: We find a large differences between the up- and down-quark contributions to G_E and G_M, implying significant flavor dependence in the charge and magnetization distributions. The rapid falloff of the ratio GEp/GMp does not appear in the individual quark form factors, but arises from a cancellation between the up- and down-quark contributions. We see indications that the down-quark contributions to the Dirac and Pauli form factors deviate from the suggested 1/Q^4 scaling behavior suggested by a previous analysis. Finally, while recent models provide a generally good qualitative description of the data, the down-quark contribution to G_E/G_M and F_2/F_1 are not reproduced by any of the models. Finally, we note that while the inclusion of recent $\gmn$ data from CLAS modifies the high-$Q^2$ slightly, the tension between these data and previous measurements at lower $Q^2$ has a more significant impact, suggesting the need for additional data in this region.

Medium modification of the charged current neutrino opacity and its implications

Previous work on neutrino emission from proto-neutron stars which employed full solutions of the Boltzmann equation showed that the average energies of emitted electron neutrinos and antineutrinos are closer to one another than predicted by older, more approximate work. This in turn implied that the neutrino driven wind is proton rich during its entire life, precluding $r$-process nucleosynthesis and the synthesis of Sr, Y, and Zr. This work relied on charged current neutrino interaction rates that are appropriate for a free nucleon gas. Here, it is shown in detail that the inclusion of the nucleon potential energies and collisional broadening of the response significantly alters this conclusion. Iso-vector interactions, which give rise to the nuclear symmetry energy, produce a difference between the neutron and proton single-particle energies $ΔU=U_n-U_p$ and alter the kinematics of the charged current reactions. In neutron-rich matter, and for a given neutrino/antineutrino energy, the rate for $ν_e+n\rightarrow e^-+p$ is enhanced while $ \barν_e+p\rightarrow n+e^+$ is suppressed because the $Q$ value for these reactions is altered by $\pmΔU$, respectively. In the neutrino decoupling region, collisional broadening acts to enhance both $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ cross-sections and RPA corrections decrease the $ν_e$ cross-section and increase the $\bar ν_e$ cross-section, but mean field shifts have a larger effect. Therefore, electron neutrinos decouple at lower temperature than when the nucleons are assumed to be free and have lower average energies. The change is large enough to allow for a reasonable period of time when the neutrino driven wind is predicted to be neutron rich. It is also shown that the electron fraction in the wind is influenced by the nuclear symmetry energy.

Fast, Efficient Calculations of the Two-Body Matrix Elements of the Transition Operators for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

To extract information about the neutrino properties from the study of neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay one needs a precise computation of the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) associated with this process. Approaches based on the Shell Model (ShM) are among the nuclear structure methods used for their computation. ShM better incorporates the nucleon correlations, but have to face the problem of the large model spaces and computational resources. The goal is to develop a new, fast algorithm and the associated computing code for efficient calculation of the two-body matrix elements (TBMEs) of the 0νββ decay transition operator, which are necessary to calculate the NMEs. This would allow us to extend the ShM calculations for double-beta decays to larger model spaces, of about 9-10 major harmonic oscillator shells. The improvement of our code consists in a faster calculation of the radial matrix elements. Their computation normally requires the numerical evaluation of two-dimensional integrals: one over the coordinate space and the other over the momentum space. By rearranging the expressions of the radial matrix elements, the integration over the coordinate space can be performed analytically, thus the computation reduces to sum up a small number of integrals over momentum. Our results for the NMEs are in a good agreement with similar results from literature, while we find a significant reduction of the computation time for TBMEs, by a factor of about 30, as compared with our previous code that uses two-dimensional integrals.

Pion production in the MiniBooNE experiment

Background: Charged current pion production gives information on the axial formfactors of nucleon resonances. It also introduces a noticeable background to quasi-elastic measurements on nuclear targets. Purpose: Understand pion production in neutrino interactions with nucleons and the reaction mechanism in nuclei. Method: The Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) model is used for an investigation of neutrino-nucleus reactions. Results: Theoretical results for integrated and differential cross sections for the MiniBooNE neutrino flux are compared to the data. Two sets of pion production data on elementary targets are used to obtain limits for the neutrino-nucleus reactions. Conclusions: The MiniBooNE pion production data are consistent with the BNL elementary data if a small flux renormalization is performed while the ANL input data lead to significantly too low cross sections. A final determination of in-medium effects requires new data on elementary (p,D) targets.

Baryon number conservation and the cumulants of the net proton distribution

We discuss the modification of the cumulants of the net baryon and net proton distributions due to the global conservation of baryon number in heavy-ion collisions. Corresponding probability distributions and their cumulants are derived analytically. We show that the conservation of baryon number results in a substantial decrease of higher order cumulants. Based on our studies, we propose an observable that is insensitive to the modifications due to baryon number conservation.

On the origin of trigger-angle dependence of di-hadron correlations

The STAR Collaboration reported measurements of di-hadron azimuthal correlation in medium-central Au+Au collisions at 200 A$\,$GeV, where the data are presented as a function of the trigger particle's azimuthal angle relative to the event plane $ϕ_s $. In particular, it is observed that the away-side correlation evolves from single- to double-peak structure with increasing $ϕ_s$. In this work, we present the calculated correlations as functions of both $ϕ_s$ and particle transverse momentum $p_T $, using the hydrodynamic code NeXSPheRIO. The results are found to be in reasonable agreement with the STAR data. We further argue that the above $ϕ_s$ dependence of the correlation structure can be understood in terms of one-tube model, as due to an interplay between the background elliptic flow caused by the initial state global geometry and the flow produced by fluctuations.

Charged kaon production by coherent scattering of neutrinos and antineutrinos on nuclei

With the aim of achieving a better and more complete understanding of neutrino interactions with nuclear targets, the coherent production of charged kaons induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos is investigated in the energy range of some of the current neutrino experiments. We follow a microscopic approach which, at the nucleon level, incorporates the most important mechanisms allowed by the chiral symmetry breaking pattern of QCD. The distortion of the outgoing (anti)kaon is taken into account by solving the Klein-Gordon equation with realistic optical potentials. Angular and momentum distributions are studied, as well as the energy and nuclear dependence of the total cross section.

Variations of nuclear binding with quark masses

We investigate the variation with light quark mass of the mass of the nucleon as well as the masses of the mesons commonly used in a one-boson-exchange model of the nucleon-nucleon force. Care is taken to evaluate the meson mass shifts at the kinematic point relevant to that problem. Using these results, the corresponding changes in the energy of the 1 S0 anti-bound state, the binding energies of the deuteron, triton and selected finite nuclei are evaluated using a one-boson exchange model. The results are discussed in the context of possible corrections to the standard scenario for big bang nucleosynthesis in the case where, as suggested by recent observations of quasar absorption spectra, the quark masses may have changed over the age of the Universe.

Extraction of dihadron-jet correlations with rigorous flow-background subtraction in a multiphase transport model

Dihadron azimuthal correlations in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$=200 GeV have been explored by using a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model. In order to obtain the contributions from jet-medium interactions, the combined harmonic flow background is subtracted from the raw dihadron correlation functions. The signals are compared in three associated transverse momentum ($p_{T}^{assoc}$) bins: 0.2-0.8 GeV/c, 0.8-1.4 GeV/c and 1.4-2.0 GeV/c from central to semi-peripheral geometries. The medium modifications are observed from changes in the signal shape and the relative jet contribution has been obtained within the change in the centrality from peripheral to central one. A strong $p_{T}^{assoc}$ dependence of the RMS width of jet correlation function is observed within the central geometry bin, i.e. 0-10$%$.

Pre-saddle neutron multiplicity for fission reactions induced by heavy ions and light particles

Pre-saddle neutron multiplicity has been calculated for several fission reactions induced by heavy ions and light particles. Experimentally, it is impossible to determine the contribution of neutrons being emitted before the saddle point and those emitted between the saddle and the scission points. Determination of the pre-saddle neutron multiplicity in our research is based on the comparison between the experimental anisotropies and those predicted by the standard saddle-point statistical model. Analysis of the results shows that the pre-saddle neutron multiplicity depends on the fission barrier height and stability of the compound nucleus. In heavy ion induced fission, the number of pre-saddle neutrons decreases with increasing the excitation energy of the compound nucleus. A main cause of this behavior is due to a reduction in the ground state-to-saddle point transition time with increasing the excitation energy of the compound nucleus. Whereas in induced fission by light particles, the number of pre-saddle neutrons increases with increasing the excitation energy of the compound nucleus.

Meson-baryon reactions with strangeness -1 within a chiral framework

We study meson-baryon scattering with strangeness -1 in unitary chiral perturbation theory. Ten coupled channels are considered in our work, namely $π^0 Λ$, $π^0 Σ^0$, $π^- Σ^+$, $π^+ Σ^-$, $K^- p$, $\bar{K}^0 n$, $ηΛ$, $ηΣ^0$, $K^0 Ξ^0$ and $K^+ Ξ^-$. A large amount of experimental data are analyzed, including the recent precise measurement by the SIDDHARTA Collaboration of the energy shift and width of the $1s$ state of kaonic hydrogen. This leads to a strong constraint on the free parameters in our theory and of the resulting meson-baryon scattering amplitudes. We also analyze the uncertainty that stems by using several different strategies to perform the fits to data. It is found that large uncertainties in the subthreshold extrapolation of the $K^-p$ scattering amplitude arise by employing either only one common weak pseudoscalar decay constant or distinguishing between $f_π$, $f_K$ and $f_η$. However, in both cases a good reproduction of experimental data is obtained. We also discuss the pole content of the resulting $S$-wave amplitudes, particularly in connection with the two-pole structure of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance.

Effects of nuclear medium and nonisoscalarity in extracting $sin^2θ_W$ using Paschos-Wolfenstein relation

We study the nuclear medium effects and nonisoscalarity correction in the extraction of weak mixing angle sin$^2θ_W$ using Paschos-Wolfenstein (PW) relation. The calculations are performed for the iron nucleus. The results are discussed along with the experimental result inferred by NuTeV collaboration. The nuclear medium effects like Fermi motion, binding, shadowing and antishadowing corrections and pion and rho meson cloud contributions have been taken into account. Calculations have been performed in the local density approximation using a relativistic nuclear spectral function which includes nucleon correlations. These studies may be useful for the ongoing MINER$ν$A experiment as well as for the proposed NuSOnG experiment.

Effects of the two-body and three-body hyperon-nucleon interactions in Λ-hypernuclei

Background: The calculation of the hyperon binding energy in hypernuclei is crucial to understanding the interaction between hyperons and nucleons. Purpose: We assess the relative importance of two- and three-body hyperon-nucleon force by studying the effect of the hyperon-nucleon-nucleon interaction in closed shell Λ-hypernuclei from A=5 to 91. Methods: The Λ-binding energy has been calculated using the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method for the first time, to study light and heavy hypernuclei within the same model. Results: Our results show that including a three-body component in the hyperon-nucleon interaction leads to a saturation of the Λ-binding energy remarkably close to the experimental data. In contrast, the two-body force alone gives an unphysical limit for the binding energy. Conclusions: The repulsive contribution of the three-body hyperon-nucleon-nucleon force is essential to reproduce, even qualitatively, the binding energy of the hypernuclei in the mass range considered.

Theoretical analysis of Lambda(1405) --> (Sigma pi)^0 mass spectra produced in p+p --> p + Lambda(1405) + K^+ reactions

We formulated the Lambda(1405) (abbreviated as Lambda^*) --> (Sigma pi)^0 invariant-mass spectra produced in p+p --> p + Lambda^* + K^+ reactions, in which both the incident channel for a quasi-bound K^-p state and its decay process to (Sigma pi)^0 were taken into account realistically. We calculated M(Sigma pi) spectral shapes for various theoretical models for Lambda^*. They are asymmetric and skewed, and were compared with recent experimental data of HADES, yielding M(Lambda^*) = 1405 -9 +11 MeV/c^2 and Gamma = 62 +- 10 MeV, where the interference effects of the Kbar N-Sigma pi resonance with I= 0 and 1 Sigma pi continuum are considered. The nearly isotropic proton distribution observed in DISTO and HADES is ascribed to a short collision length in the production of Lambda^*, which justifies the high sticking mechanism of Lambda^* and the participating proton into K^-pp.

Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock Approach to Nuclear Pasta at Finite Temperature

We present simulations of neutron-rich matter at subnuclear densities, like supernova matter, with the time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation at temperatures of several MeV. The initial state consists of $α$ particles randomly distributed in space that have a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution in momentum space. Adding a neutron background initialized with Fermi distributed plane waves the calculations reflect a reasonable approximation of astrophysical matter. This matter evolves into spherical, rod-like, and slab-like shapes and mixtures thereof. The simulations employ a full Skyrme interaction in a periodic three-dimensional grid. By an improved morphological analysis based on Minkowski functionals, all eight pasta shapes can be uniquely identified by the sign of only two valuations, namely the Euler characteristic and the integral mean curvature. In addition, we propose the variance in the cell density distribution as a measure to distinguish pasta matter from uniform matter.

Similarity Renormalization Group Evolution of Three-Nucleon Forces in a Hyperspherical Momentum Representation

A new framework for computing the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) evolution of three-nucleon forces (3NF) in momentum representation is presented. The use of antisymmetric three-particle hyperspherical momentum states ensures unitary evolutions within certain basis truncations, much like antisymmetric harmonic oscillator SRG evolutions. Additionally, in each partial wave the $T_{\mbox{rel}}$-SRG regulator is exactly represented, similar to recent 3NF momentum representation evolutions. Unitary equivalence is demonstrated for the triton using several chiral two- plus three-nucleon interactions. This method allows for a clean visualization of the evolution of the three-nucleon forces, which manifests the SRG decoupling pattern and low-momentum universality.
