On Energy of the Friedman Universes in Conformally Flat Coordinates

Recently many authors have calculated the energy of the Friedman universes by using double index energy-momentum complexes in Cartesian comoving coordinates $(t,x,y,z)$ and concluded that the flat and closed Friedman universes are energy-free. We show in this paper by using Einstein canonical energy-momentum complex and by doing calculations in conformally flat coordinates that such conclusion is incorrect. The results obtained in this paper are compatible with the results of the our previous paper \cite{Gar07} where we have used coordinate-independent averaged relative energy-momentum tensors to analyze Friedman universes.

The Physics of Information

We review of the interface between (theoretical) physics and information for non-experts. The origin of information as related to the notion of entropy is described, first in the context of thermodynamics then in the context of statistical mechanics. A close examination of the foundations of statistical mechanics and the need to reconcile the probabilistic and deterministic views of the world leads us to a discussion of chaotic dynamics, where information plays a crucial role in quantifying predictability. We then discuss a variety of fundamental issues that emerge in defining information and how one must exercise care in discussing concepts such as order, disorder, and incomplete knowledge. We also discuss an alternative form of entropy and its possible relevance for nonequilibrium thermodynamics. In the final part of the paper we discuss how quantum mechanics gives rise to the very different concept of quantum information. Entirely new possibilities for information storage and computation are possible due to the massive parallel processing inherent in quantum mechanics. We also point out how entropy can be extended to apply to quantum mechanics to provide a useful measurement for quantum entanglement. Finally we make a small excursion to the interface betweeen quantum theory and general relativity, where one is confronted with an "ultimate information paradox" posed by the physics of Black Holes. In this review we have limited ourselves; not all relevant topics that touch on physics and information could be covered.

Unitarity in the Brout-Englert-Higgs Mechanism for Gravity

Just like the vector bosons in Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories, gravitons can attain mass by spontaneous local symmetry breaking. The question is whether this can happen in a Lorentz-invariant way. We consider the use of four scalar fields that break coordinate reparametrization invariance, by playing the role of preferred flat coordinates x, y, z, and t. In the unbroken representation, the theory has a (negative) cosmological constant, which is tuned to zero by the scalars in the broken phase. Massive spin 2 bosons and a single massive scalar survive. The theory is not renormalizable, so at best it can be viewed as an effective field theory for massive spin 2 particles. One may think of applications in cosmology, but a more tantalizing idea is to apply it to string theory approaches to QCD: if the gluon sector is to be described by a compactified 26 or 10 dimensional bosonic string theory, then the ideas considered here could be used to describe the mechanism that removes a massless or tachyonic scalar and provides mass to the spin 2 glueball states. The delicate problem of removing indefinite metric and/or negative energy states is addressed. The scalar particle has negative metric, so that unitarity demands that only states with an even number of them are allowed. Various ways are considered to adapt the matter section of the theory such that matter only couples to positive metric states, and we succeed in suppressing the main contributions to unitarity-violating amplitudes, but the exact restoration of unitarity in the spinless sector will continue to be a delicate issue in theories of this sort.

Asymptotics of LRS Bianchi type I cosmological models with elastic matter

In this paper we report on results in the study of spatially homogeneous cosmological models with elastic matter. We show that the behavior of elastic solutions is fundamentally different from that of perfect fluid solutions already in the case of locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) Bianchi type I models; this is true even when the elastic material resembles a perfect fluid very closely. In particular, the approach to the initial singularity is characterized by an intricate oscillatory behavior of the scale factors, while the future asymptotic behavior is described by isotropization rates that differ significantly from those of perfect fluids.

Evidence for evolution from pure states to mixed states in pion creation process pi(-) p -> pi(-)pi(+) n on polarized target and its physical interpretation

In 1982 Hawking suggested that quantum fluctuations of space-time metric will induce a non-unitary evolution from pure initial states to mixed final states in particle interactions at any energy. This hypothesis can be tested using existing CERN data on pi(-) p -> pi(-)pi(+) n on polarized target at 17.2 GeV/c. The purity of the final state is controlled by the purity of recoil nucleon polarization. We develop a spin formalism to calculate expressions for recoil nucleon polarization for two specific pure initial states. Imposing conditions of purity on the recoil nuclon polarization we obtain conditions on the amplitudes which are violated by model independent amplitude analysis of CERN data at large t. We conclude that pure states can evolve into mixed states in pi(-) p -> pi(-)pi(+) n. In quantum theory such non-unitary evolution occurs in open quantum systems interacting with an environment. We present evidence to validate the view of the pion creation process as an open quantum system interacting with a quantum environment. The observed process is time-irreversible and violates CPT symmetry.

Non-linear Equation of State, COSMIC Acceleration and Deceleration During Phantom-Dominance

Here, RS-II model of brane-gravity is considerd for phantom universe using non-linear equation of stste. Phantom fluid is known to violate the weak energy condition. In this paper, it is found that this characteristic of phantom energy is affected drastically by the negative brane-tension $λ$ of the RS-II model. It is interesting to see that upto a certain value of energy density $ρ$ satisfying $ρ/λ< 1$, weak energy condition is violated and universe super-accelerates. But as $ρ$ increases more, only strong energy condition is violated and universe accelerates. When $1 < ρ/λ<2$, even strong energy condition is not violated and universe decelerates. Expansion of the universe stops, when $ρ= 2 λ$. This is contrary to earlier results of phantom universe exhibiting acceleration only.

Gravitational waves from black-hole mergers

Coalescing black-hole binaries are expected to be the strongest sources of gravitational waves for ground-based interferometers as well as the space-based interferometer LISA. Recent progress in numerical relativity now makes it possible to calculate the waveforms from the strong-field dynamical merger and is revolutionizing our understanding of these systems. We review these dramatic developments, emphasizing applications to issues in gravitational wave observations. These new capabilities also make possible accurate calculations of the recoil or kick imparted to the final remnant black hole when the merging components have unequal masses, or unequal or unaligned spins. We highlight recent work in this area, focusing on results of interest to astrophysics.

Data formats for numerical relativity waves

This document proposes data formats to exchange numerical relativity results, in particular gravitational waveforms. The primary goal is to further the interaction between gravitational-wave source modeling groups and the gravitational-wave data-analysis community. We present a simple and extendable format which is applicable to various kinds of gravitational wave sources including binaries of compact objects and systems undergoing gravitational collapse, but is nevertheless sufficiently general to be useful for other purposes.

Another proof of the positive energy theorem in gravity

We show that gravitational energy expression simplifies when a new set of coordinates that satisfies a certain asymptotic gauge condition is used. Compared to the ADM formula, positivity of the energy is more transparent in this new construction. Our proof relies on the asymptotic symmetries (specifically supertranslations) of the asymptotically flat spacetimes at spatial infinity in four dimensions.

The New Science of Gravitational Waves

A brief survey is presented of new science that will emerge during the decades ahead from direct detection of gravitational radiation. Interferometers on earth and in space will probe the universe in an entirely new way by directly sensing motions of distant matter over a range of more than a million in frequency. The most powerful sources of gravitational (or indeed any form of) energy in the universe are inspiralling and merging binary black holes; with LISA data, they will become the most distant, most completely and precisely modeled, and most accurately measured systems in astronomy outside the solar system. Other sources range from already known and named nearby Galactic binary stars, to compact objects being swallowed by massive black holes, to possible effects of new physics: phase transitions and superstrings from the early universe, or holographic noise from quantum fluctuations of local spacetime.

Holographic Indeterminacy, Uncertainty and Noise

A theory is developed to describe the nonlocal effect of spacetime quantization on position measurements transverse to macroscopic separations. Spacetime quantum states close to a classical null trajectory are approximated by plane wavefunctions of Planck wavelength (l_P) reference beams; these are used to connect transverse position operators at macroscopically separated events. Transverse positions of events with null spacetime separation, but separated by macroscopic spatial distance $L$, are shown to be quantum conjugate observables, leading to holographic indeterminacy and a new uncertainty principle, a lower bound on the standard deviation of relative transverse position Δx_\perp > \sqrt{l_PL} or angular orientation Δθ> \sqrt{l_P/L}. The resulting limit on the number of independent degrees of freedom is shown to agree quantitatively with holographic covariant entropy bounds derived from black hole physics and string theory. The theory predicts a universal ``holographic noise'' of spacetime, appearing as shear perturbations with a frequency-independent power spectral density S_H=l_P/c, or in equivalent metric perturbation units, h_{H,rms} \sqrt{l_P/c} = 2.3 \times 10^{-22} /\sqrt{Hz}. If this description of holographic phenomenology is valid, interferometers with current technology could undertake direct quantitative studies of quantum gravity.

Inducing the Lovelock action

We re-analyze a possible ambiguity in the application of dimensional regularization to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, arising from the way one treats the Gauss-Bonnet term. It is demonstrated that the addition of such a term to the action gives rise to a non-minimal graviton wave operator, but does not produce new on shell divergences at one loop order in d=4. However, from a d-dimensional perspective the Gauss-Bonnet term is shown to generate new divergences in the form of the six-dimensional Euler density. The conjecture that one would next produce the eight-dimensional Euler term is shown to be false.

Fermi-point scenario for emergent gravity

Let us assume that gravity is an emergent low-energy phenomenon arising from a topologically stable defect in momentum space -- the Fermi point. What are the consequences? We discuss the natural values of fermion masses and cosmological constant; flatness of the Universe; bounds on Lorentz violation; etc.

On the Configuration Spaces of Homogeneous Loop Quantum Cosmology and Loop Quantum Gravity

The set of homogeneous isotropic connections, as used in loop quantum cosmology, forms a line $l$ in the space of all connections $\cal A$. This embedding, however, does not continuously extend to an embedding of the configuration space $\overline l$ of homogeneous isotropic loop quantum cosmology into that of loop quantum gravity, $\overline{\cal A}$. This follows from the fact that the parallel transports for general, non-straight paths in the base manifold do not depend almost periodically on $l$. Analogous results are given for the anisotropic case.

Gravitational waves originated before compactification in Kaluza-Klein theory

We investigate the propagation of multidimensional gravitational waves generated before compactification and observes today as 4-dimensional gravitational waves and gauge fields by generalizing the investigation of Alesci and Montani(AM) to the case where the internal space is an n-sphere. We also derive the 4-dimensional forms of the multidimensional harmonic gauge condition. The primary difference from the case of AM comes from the effect of curvature of the internal space which prevent the space to be static. The other effects are explicitly shown for propagation of the waves in our 4-dimensional spacetime. Static internal space exists if multidimensional cosmologicalconstant is present. Then the situation is similar to the one-dimensional internal space.

The dark energy scale in superconductors: Innovative theoretical and experimental concepts

We revisit the cosmological constant problem using the viewpoint that the observed value of dark energy density in the universe actually represents a rather natural value arising as the geometric mean of two vacuum energy densities, one being extremely large and the other one being extremely small. The corresponding mean energy scale is the Planck-Einstein scale l_PE = (l_P l_E)^1/2 = (hbar G/ c^3 Lambda)^1/4 ~ 0.037 mm, a natural scale both for dark energy and the physics of superconductors. We deal with the statistics of quantum fluctuations underlying dark energy in superconductors and consider a scale transformation from the Planck scale to the Planck-Einstein scale which leaves the quantum physics invariant. Our approach unifies various experimentally confirmed or conjectured effects in superconductors into a common framework: Cutoff of vacuum fluctuation spectra, formation of Tao balls, anomalous gravitomagnetic fields, non-classical inertia, and time uncertainties in radioactive superconductors. We propose several new experiments which may further elucidate the role of the Planck-Einstein scale in superconductors.
