Investigation of spin rotators in CEPC at the Z-pole

Longitudinal polarization is an important design aspect of the future 100 km-scale Circular Electron Position Collider (CEPC). Spin rotators are needed in CEPC collider rings to make the beam polarization along the longitudinal direction at the interaction points (IPs). This paper focuses on the design of spin rotators for CEPC at Z-pole (45.6 GeV). The design of spin rotators in CEPC at Z-pole is based on solenoid magnets and horizontal bending magnets sections. The coupling of transverse motion introduced by solenoids is compensated with quadrupole lenses. Adjustments have been made to the layout to implement the spin rotators into the collider rings.Longitudinal polarized beam can be achieved at the IPs with the spin rotators. High degree of polarization is attainable, while the effect of spin rotators on orbital motion is acceptable. The detailed simulation results will be presented.A solenoid-based spin rotator configuration is designed and integrated into the CEPC collider ring lattice. According to the simulation results, the polarization requirements can be satisfied.

McMillan map and nonlinear Twiss parameters

In this article we consider two dynamical systems: the McMillan sextupole and octupole integrable mappings originally introduced by Edwin McMillan; the second one is also known as canonical McMillan map. Both of them are simplest symmetric McMillan maps with only one intrinsic parameter, the trace of the Jacobian at the fixed point. While these dynamical systems have numerous of applications and are used in many areas of math and physics, some of their dynamical properties have not been described yet. We fulfill the gap and provide complete description of all stable trajectories including parametrization of invariant curves, Pioncaré rotation numbers and canonical action-angle variables. In the second part we relate these maps with general chaotic map in McMillan-Turaev form. We show that McMillan sextupole and octupole mappings are first order approximations of dynamics around the fixed point, in a similar way as linear map and quadratic invariant (Courant-Snyder invariant in accelerator physics) is the zeroth order approximation (known as linearization). Finally we suggest the new formalism of nonlinear Twiss parameters which incorporate dependence of rotation number as a function of amplitude, in contrast to e.g. betatron phase advance used in accelerator physics which is independent of amplitude. Specifically in application to accelerator physics this new formalism is capable of predicting dynamical aperture around 1-st, 2-nd, 3-rd and 4-th order resonances for flat beams, which is critical for beam injection/extraction.

Simulation study of betatron radiation in AWAKE Run 2 experiment

The spectroscopy of betatron radiation from the focusing plasma column can work as a powerful non-invasive beam diagnostic method for plasma wakefield acceleration experiments such as the AWAKE. In this paper, the effects of radial size mismatch and off-axis injection on the beam dynamics, as well as the spectral features of the betatron radiation emitted by the witness electron bunch in the quasi-linear proton-driven plasma wakefield are studied. It is shown that the evolution of the critical betatron photon energy and the overall photon angular distribution can effectively reveal the initial injection conditions of the witness electron bunch. The possibility of using this method for the diagnostics of the seed electron bunch in the proton self-modulation stage of AWAKE Run 2 is also discussed.

Positron Sources for Future High Energy Physics Colliders

An unprecedented positron average current is required to fit the luminosity demands of future $e^+e^-$ high energy physics colliders. In addition, in order to access precision-frontier physics, these machines require positron polarization to enable exploring the polarization dependence in many HEP processes cross sections, reducing backgrounds and extending the reach of chiral physics studies beyond the standard model. The ILC has a mature plan for the polarized positron source based on conversion in a thin target of circularly polarized gammas generated by passing the main high energy e-beam in a long superconducting helical undulator. Compact colliders (CLIC, C3 and advanced accelerator-based concepts) adopt a simplified approach and currently do not plan to use polarized positrons in their baseline design, but could greatly benefit from the development of compact alternative solutions to polarized positron production. Increasing the positron current, the polarization purity and simplifying the engineering design are all opportunities where advances in accelerator technology have the potential to make a significant impact. This white-paper describes the current status of the field and provides R\&D short-term and long-term pathways for polarized positron sources.

Useful formulas for non-magnetized electron cooling

Recent success of Low Energy RHIC Electron Cooler (LEReC) opened a road for development of high energy electron coolers based on non-magnetized electron bunches accelerated by RF cavities. Electrons in such coolers can have velocity distribution with various unequal horizontal, vertical and longitudinal velocity spreads. In this paper we revisit a formula of friction force in non-magnetized cooling and derive a number of useful expressions for different limiting cases.

X-ray pulse generation with ultra-fast flipping of its orbital angular momentum

A method to temporally tailor the properties of X-ray radiation carrying Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) is presented. In simulations, an electron beam is prepared with a temporally modulated micro-bunching structure which, when radiating at the second harmonic in a helical undulator, generates OAM light with a corresponding temporally modulated intensity. This method is shown to generate attosecond pulse trains of OAM light without the need for any additional external optics, making the wavelength range tunable. In addition to the OAM pulse train, the method can be adapted to generate radiation where the handedness of the OAM mode may also be temporally modulated (flipped).

A Prototype Compact Accelerator Driven Neutron Source for Canada Supporting Medical and Scientific Applications

Canada recently lost its major supply of neutron beams with the closure of the National Research Universal reactor at Chalk River Laboratories in March 2018. This issue is further exacerbated by the closure of other reactors abroad, which also served as centers for neutron research. Consequently, there is a demand for new sources, both for Canada and internationally, as the global supply shrinks. Compact accelerator driven neutron sources provide an avenue to realize an intense source of pulsed neutron beams, with a capital cost significantly lower than spallation sources. In an effort to close the neutron gap in Canada, a Prototype Canadian compact accelerator driven neutron source (PC-CANS) is proposed for installation at the University of Windsor. The PC-CANS is envisaged to serve two neutron science instruments, a boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) station and a beamline for fluorine-18 radioisotope production for positive emission tomography. To serve these diverse applications of neutron beams, a linear accelerator solution is selected to provide 10 MeV protons with a peak current of 10 mA within a 5\% duty cycle. The accelerator is based on an RFQ and a DTL with a post-DTL pulsed kicker system to simultaneously deliver macro-pulses to each end-station. The neutron production targets for both neutron science and BNCT will be made of beryllium and engineered to handle the high beam power density. Conceptual studies of the accelerator and benchmarking studies of neutron production and moderation with FLUKA and MCNP, in support of the target-moderator-reflector design are reported

Confined Continuous-Flow Plasma Source For High-Average-Power Laser Plasma Acceleration

Over the last decades, significant advances in high-power laser systems have enabled rapid progress in the development of laser-driven plasma accelerators. Today, the results obtained in beam stability and reproducibility present laser plasma acceleration as a viable and promising alternative to conventional accelerators. As several electron beam and secondary sources applications require high average currents, a major focus is now on increasing the beam's repetition rate. In the following, we introduce a novel plasma source for kHz electron acceleration, providing a continuous and spatially confined gas flow, while minimising the gas load in the acceleration chamber.

Theoretical Simulation and Experiment Investigation of X-ray transmission characteristics though Square Polycapillary Slice Lens with quadratic curve

The x-ray polycapillary lens is an optical device with good optic performance. Similar to the traditional X-ray polycapillary lens, square polycapillary slice lens was regulated on X-ray based on the full reflection principle of X-ray in the capillaries surfaces. According to its geometrical structure model and the X-ray tracing principle, a set of X-ray transmission procedures was established. A complete square polycapillary slice lens with quadratic curve was produced and the optical performance was tested

Proposal for a Damping-Ring-Free Electron Injector for Future Linear Colliders

The current designs of future electron-positron linear colliders incorporate large and complex damping rings to produce asymmetric beams for beamstrahlung suppression. Here we present the design of an electron injector capable of delivering flat electron beams with phase-space partition comparable to the electron-beam parameters produced downstream of the damping ring in the proposed international linear collider (ILC) design. Our design does not employ a damping ring but is instead based on cross-plane phase-space-manipulation techniques. The performance of the proposed configuration, its sensitivity to jitter along with its impact on spin-polarization is investigated. The proposed paradigm could be adapted to other linear collider concepts under consideration and offers a path toward significant cost and complexity reduction.

Radiation of a charge moving at an angle to the face of a dielectric prism

Cherenkov radiation which generates by a charge moving in presence of a dielectric prism from the base to the top is analyzed. Unlike our previous works, here we consider the case when the charge trajectory is not parallel to the prism face. We apply a new version of the aperture method which uses the expansion in terms of plane waves in the prism material and on the aperture. The integrals for the radiation field are calculated analytically in the Fraunhofer region where the field components are written as single integrals. The influence of the incline of the charge trajectory on the radiation characteristics is discussed.

Radiation of a bunch in a waveguide having areas with deeply corrugated and smooth walls

We analyze radiation from a bunch that uniformly moves in a circular waveguide and crosses the boundary between two areas: with a corrugated wall and with a smooth wall. It is assumed that the corrugation period is much less than the wavelengths under consideration. However, in difference with our pervious works, the corrugation depth is of the same order as the wavelength. The influence of corrugation on the electromagnetic field is investigated using the method of equivalent boundary conditions. At first, we consider a regular corrugated waveguide. Then two cases of the waveguides with boundaries between the corrugated and smooth regions is studied: first, when the bunch flies out of the corrugated part into the smooth one, and second, when the bunch flies into the corrugated part from the smooth one. We obtain and analyze the analytical expressions for the field components in both areas and reveal the main physical peculiarities of the bunch radiation.

Cherenkov Wakefield Radiation from an Open End of a Three-Layer Dielectric Capillary

Modern trends in beam-driven radiation sources involve interaction of Cherenkov wakefields with open-ended circular waveguide structures having complicated dielectric lining, with a three-layer dielectric capillary recently offered for reducing the radiation divergency being a representative example \cite{Jiang2020}. This paper presents rigorous approach allowing analytical description of electromagnetic processes occuring when the described structure is excited by single waveguide mode. In other words, corresponding canonical waveguide diffraction problem is considered in rigorous formulation. This is continuation of our recent paper \cite{GV2022} where a simpler case of a two-layer dielectric filling has been considered. Here we use the same analytical approach based on Wiener-Hopf-Fock technique and deal with more complicated case of a three-layer dielectric lining.

An easy technique for focus characterization and optimization of XUV and soft x-ray pulses

For many applications of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and x-ray pulses a small focus size is crucial to reach the required intensity or spatial resolution. In this article, we present a simple way to characterize an XUV focus with a resolution of 1.85 micrometer. Furthermore, this technique is applied for the measurement and optimization of the focus of an ellipsoidal mirror for photon energies ranging from 18 to 150 eV generated by high-order harmonics. We envisage a broad range of applications of this approach with sub-micrometer resolution from high-harmonic sources via synchrotrons to free-electron lasers.

Tight focusing proton beam with radius in nanometer scale generation based on channeled solid target

An efficient scheme of generating ultra-tightly focused proton bunch with radius in nanometer scale is proposed. A needlelike proton filament of transverse size in nanometer scale with the density of and charge quantity is obtained based on multi-dimension Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations. The regime is achieved via laser irradiating on a solid target with pre-channeled density profile. The theoretical analysis mentions that the transverse electric field dramatically transits from a defocusing dipole to double dipoles structure with the change of the initial target density distribution from uniform to pre-channeled. The inner dipole of the electric field tightly focuses the proton beam into the order of magnitude of nanometer. 3D simulations verify the scheme in the realistic condition. Various pre-channeled density profiles including linear, parabolic and arbitrary steeped prove to work well for the regime, which declares the robustness and the performability of the scheme in experiment.

Snowmass 2021 White Paper on Upgrading SuperKEKB with a Polarized Electron Beam: Discovery Potential and Proposed Implementation

Upgrading the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider with polarized electron beams opens a new program of precision physics at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. This white paper describes the physics potential of this `Chiral Belle' program. It includes projections for precision measurements of $\sin^2θ_W$ that can be obtained from independent left-right asymmetry measurements of $e^+e^-$ transitions to pairs of electrons, muons, taus, charm and b-quarks. The $\sin^2θ_W$ precision obtainable at SuperKEKB will match that of the LEP/SLC world average, but at the centre-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV. Measurements of the couplings for muons, charm, and $b$-quarks will be substantially improved and the existing $3σ$ discrepancy between the SLC $A_{LR}$ and LEP $A_{FB}^b$ measurements will be addressed. Precision measurements of neutral current universality will be more than an order of magnitude more precise than currently available. As the energy scale is well away from the $Z^0$-pole, the precision measurements will have sensitivity to the presence of a parity-violating dark sector gauge boson, $Z_{\rm dark}$. The program also enables the measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$ form factor of the $τ$ to be made at an unprecedented level of precision. A precision of $10^{-5}$ level is accessible with 40~ab$^{-1}$ and with more data it would start to approach the $10^{-6}$ level. This technique would provide the most precise information from the third generation about potential new physics explanations of the muon $g-2$ $4σ$ anomaly. Additional $τ$ and QCD physics programs enabled or enhanced with having polarized electron beams are also discussed in this White Paper. This paper includes a summary of the path forward in R&D and next steps required to implement this upgrade and access its exciting discovery potential.

Ion Sources for Production of Highly Charged Ion Beams

Intense Highly Charged Ion Beams (HCIB) from injector and charge-breeder ion sources at heavy ion accelerator facilities are in demand to expand research in particle and nuclear physics as well as for radiation effects testing. With current accelerator upgrades and advances in accelerator technologies, not all HCIB demands can be met with existing ion sources. Continued Research and Development (R&D) in this field are therefore essential to continually improve their performance and match the unprecedented and increasingly higher HCIB requirements from the accelerator community. This White Paper discusses the present production capabilities of ion sources of HCIB, and the potentials of future Highly Charged Ion (HCI) sources. It discusses the strengths and weaknesses of such sources along with paths forward for improving their performance to meet the requirements of present and future heavy ion accelerator facilities. This document is meant to be utilized as a basis to guide the conceptual design of future accelerators.
