Long-term 3D-MHD Simulations of Black Hole Accretion Disks formed in Neutron Star Mergers

We examine the long-term evolution of accretion tori around black hole (BH) remnants of compact object mergers involving at least one neutron star, to better understand their contribution to kilonovae and the synthesis of r-process elements. To this end, we modify the unsplit magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) solver in FLASH4.5 to work in non-uniform three-dimensional spherical coordinates, enabling more efficient coverage of a large dynamic range in length scales while exploiting symmetries in the system. This modified code is used to perform BH accretion disk simulations that vary the initial magnetic field geometry and disk compactness, utilizing a physical equation of state, a neutrino leakage scheme for emission and absorption, and modeling the BH's gravity with a pseudo-Newtonian potential. Simulations run for long enough to achieve a radiatively-inefficient state in the disk. We find robust mass ejection with both poloidal and toroidal initial field geometries, and suppressed outflow at high disk compactness. With the included physics, we obtain bimodal velocity distributions that trace back to mass ejection by magnetic stresses at early times, and to thermal processes in the radiatively-inefficient state at late times. The electron fraction distribution of the disk outflow is broad in all models, and the ejecta geometry follows a characteristic hourglass shape. We test the effect of removing neutrino absorption or nuclear recombination with axisymmetric models, finding $\sim 50\%$ less mass ejection and more neutron-rich composition without neutrino absorption, and a subdominant contribution from nuclear recombination. Tests of the MHD and neutrino leakage implementations are included.

Possible Constraints on the Density Dependence of the Nuclear Symmetry Energy from Quasiperiodic Oscillations in Soft Gamma Repeaters

We systematically examine the fundamental frequencies of shear torsional oscillations in neutron star crusts in a manner that is dependent on the parameter $L$ characterizing the poorly known density dependence of the symmetry energy. The identification of the lowest quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO) among the observed QPOs from giant flares in soft-gamma repeaters as the $/ell=2$ fundamental torsional oscillations enables us to constrain the parameter $L$ as $L/ge 47.4$ MeV, which is the most conservative restriction on $L$ obtained in the present work that assumes that the mass and radius of the flaring neutron stars range 1.4-1.8 $M_{/odot}$ and 10-14 km. Next, we identify one by one a set of the low-lying frequencies observed in giant flares as the fundamental torsional oscillations. The values of $L$ that can reproduce all the observed frequencies in terms of the torsional oscillations coupled with a part of dripped neutrons via entrainment effects are then constrained as 101.1 MeV $/le L /le$ 131.0 MeV. Alternatively, if only the second lowest frequency observed in SGR 1806$-$20 has a different origin, one obtains relatively low $L$ values ranging 58.0 MeV $/le L /le$ 85.3 MeV, which seem more consistent with other empirical constraints despite large uncertainties.

Physics input for modelling superfluid neutron stars with hyperon cores

Observations of massive ($M \approx 2.0~M_\odot$) neutron stars (NSs), PSRs J1614-2230 and J0348+0432, rule out most of the models of nucleon-hyperon matter employed in NS simulations. Here we construct three possible models of nucleon-hyperon matter consistent with the existence of $2~M_\odot$ pulsars as well as with semi-empirical nuclear matter parameters at saturation, and semi-empirical hypernuclear data. Our aim is to calculate for these models all the parameters necessary for modelling dynamics of hyperon stars (such as equation of state, adiabatic indices, thermodynamic derivatives, relativistic entrainment matrix, etc.), making them available for a potential user. To this aim a general non-linear hadronic Lagrangian involving $σωρϕσ^\ast$ meson fields, as well as quartic terms in vector-meson fields, is considered. A universal scheme for calculation of the $\ell=0,1$ Landau Fermi-liquid parameters and relativistic entrainment matrix is formulated in the mean-field approximation. Use of this scheme allow us to obtain numerical tables with the equation of state, Landau quasiparticle effective masses, adiabatic indices, the $\ell=0,1$ Landau Fermi-liquid parameters, and the relativistic entrainment matrix for the selected models of nucleon-hyperon matter. These data are available on-line and suitable for numerical implementation in computer codes modelling various dynamical processes in NSs, in particular, oscillations of superfluid NSs and their cooling.

Magnetic Dipole Moment of SGRs and AXPs Described as Massive and Magnetic White Dwarfs

The Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs) are some of the most interesting groups of pulsars that have been intensively studied in the recent years. They are understood as neutron stars (NSs) with super strong magnetic fields, namely $B\gtrsim10^{14}$ G. However, in the last two years two SGRs with low magnetic fields $B\sim(10^{12}-10^{13})$ G have been detected. Moreover, three fast and very {\it magnetic} white dwarfs (WDs) have also been observed in the last years. Based on these new pulsar discoveries, we compare and contrast the magnetic fields, magnetic dipole moment, characteristic ages, and X-ray steady luminosities of these two SGRs (in the WD model) with three fast white dwarfs, to conclude that they show strong similarities corroborating an alternative description of several SGRs/AXPs as very massive and magnetic white dwarfs. The pulsar magnetic dipole moment $m$ depending only on the momentum of inertia $I$, and observational properties, such as the period $P$ and its first time derivative $\dot{P}$, can help to identify the scale of $I$ for SGRs/AXPs. We analyze the pulsar magnetic dipole moment $m$ of SGRs and AXPs when a model based on a massive fast rotating highly magnetized white dwarf is considered. We show that the values for $m$ obtained for several SGRs and AXPs are in agreement with the observed range $10^{34}{\rm emu}\leq m \leq10^{36}{\rm emu}$ of isolated and polar magnetic white dwarfs. This result together with the fact that for {\it magnetic} white dwarfs $B\sim(10^6-10^8)$ G their magnetic dipole moments are almost independent of the star rotation period ($10^{4}\lesssim P \lesssim10^{6} {\rm s}$) - a phenomenology not shared by neutron stars pulsars - suggests a possible {\it magnetic} white dwarf nature for some of SGRs/AXPs that have much smaller periods ($P\sim 10$ s).

A Pseudo su(1,1)-Algebraic Deformation of the Cooper-Pair in the su(2)-Algebraic Many-Fermion Model

A pseudo su(1,1)-algebra is formulated as a possible deformation of the Cooper-pair in the su(2)-algebraic many-fermion system. With the aid of this algebra, it is possible to describe behavior of individual fermions which are generated as the result of interaction with the external environment. The form presented in this paper is a generalization of a certain simple case developed recently by the present authors. Basic idea follows the su(1,1)-algebra in the Schwinger boson representation for treating energy transfer between the harmonic oscillator and the external environment. Hamiltonian is given under the idea of the phase space doubling in the thermo-field dynamics formalism and the time-dependent variational method is applied to this Hamiltonian. Its trial state is constructed in the frame deformed from the BCS-Bogoliubov approach to the superconductivity. Several numerical results are shown.

Interplay between Spin Polarization and Color Superconductivity in High Density Quark Matter

Here, it is suggested that a four-point interaction of the tensor type may lead to spin polarization in quark matter at high density. It is found that the two-flavor superconducting phase and the spin polarized phase correspond to distinct local minima of a certain generalized thermodynamical potential. It follows that the transition from one to the other phase occurs passing through true minima with both a spin polarization and a color superconducting gap. It is shown that the quark spin polarized phase is realized at rather high density, while the two-flavor color superconducting phase is realized at a lower density region.

Spin-isospin response of deformed neutron-rich nuclei in a self-consistent Skyrme energy-density-functional approach

We develop a new framework of the self-consistent deformed proton-neutron quasiparticle-random-phase approximation (pnQRPA), formulated in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) single-quasiparticle basis. The same Skyrme force is used in both the HFB and pnQRPA calculations except in the proton-neutron particle-particle channel, where an S=1 contact force is employed. Numerical application is performed for Gamow-Teller (GT) strength distributions and $β$-decay rates in the deformed neutron-rich Zr isotopes located around the path of the rapid-neutron-capture process nucleosynthesis. It is found that the GT strength distributions are fragmented due to deformation. Furthermore we find that the momentum-dependent terms in the particle-hole residual interaction leads to a stronger collectivity of the GT giant resonance. The T=0 pairing enhances the low-lying strengths cooperatively with the T=1 pairing correlation, which shortens the $β$-decay half lives by at most an order of magnitude. The new calculation scheme reproduces well the observed isotopic dependence of the $β$-decay half lives of deformed $^{100-110}$Zr isotopes.

Flow equation of functional renormalization group for three-body scattering problems

Functional renormalization group (FRG) is applied to the three-body scattering problem in the two-component fermionic system with an attractive contact interaction. We establish a new and correct flow equation on the basis of FRG and show that our flow equation is consistent with integral equations obtained from the Dyson-Schwinger equation. In particular, the relation of our flow equation and the Skornyakov and Ter-Martirosyan equation for the atom-dimer scattering is made clear.

Alpha-clustered hypernuclei and chiral SU(3) dynamics

Light hypernuclei with an $α$ cluster substructure of the core nucleus are studied using an accurate cluster approach (the Hyper-THSR wave function) in combination with a density-dependent $Λ$ hyperon-nuclear interaction derived from chiral SU(3) effective field theory. This interaction includes important two-pion exchange processes involving $ΣN$ intermediate states and associated three-body mechanisms as well as effective mass and surface terms arising in a derivative expansion of the in-medium $Λ$ self-energy. Applications and calculated results are presented and discussed for $_Λ^9$Be and $^{13}_Λ$C. Furthermore, the result of the lightest $α$ clustered hypernucleus, $^5_Λ$He using realistic $ab initio$ four nucleon density is shown.

Lambda (1405) photoproduction based on chiral unitary model

Recent CLAS data for the pi Sigma invariant mass distributions (line-shapes) in the gamma p -> K^+ pi Sigma reaction are theoretically investigated. The line-shapes have peaks associated with the Lambda(1405) excitation. Our model consists of gauge invariant photo-production mechanisms, and the chiral unitary model that gives the rescattering amplitudes where Lambda(1405) is contained. It is found that, while the pi Sigma line-shape data in the Lambda(1405) region are successfully reproduced by our model for all the charge states, the production mechanism is not so simple that we need to introduce parameters associated with short-range dynamics to fit the data. Our detailed analysis suggests that the nonresonant background contribution is not negligible, and its sizable effect shifts the Lambda(1405) peak position by several MeV. We also analyze the data using a Breit-Wigner amplitudes instead of those from the chiral unitary model. We find that the fitted Breit-Wigner parameters are closer to the higher pole position for Lambda(1405) of the chiral unitary model. This work sets a starting point for a fuller analysis in which line-shape as well as K^+ angular distribution data are simultaneously analyzed for extracting Lambda(1405) pole(s).

Fermionic Functional Renormalization Group Approach to Bose-Einstein Condensation of Dimers

Fermionic functional renormalization group (f-FRG) is applied to describe Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of dimers for a two-component fermionic system with attractive contact interaction. In order to describe the system of dimers without introducing auxiliary bosonic fields (bosonization), we propose a new exact evolution-equation of the effective action in f-FRG with an infrared regulator for the fermion vertex. Then we analyze its basic properties in details. We show explicitly that the critical temperature of the free Bose gas is obtained naturally by this method without bosonization. Methods to make systematic improvement from the deep BEC limit are briefly discussed.

Pion properties at finite nuclear density based on in-medium chiral perturbation theory

The in-medium pion properties, {\it i.e.} the temporal pion decay constant $f_t$, the pion mass $m_π^*$ and the wave function renormalization, in symmetric nuclear matter are calculated in an in-medium chiral perturbation theory up to the next-to-leading order of the density expansion $O(k_F^4)$. The chiral Lagrangian for the pion-nucleon interaction is determined in vacuum, and the low energy constants are fixed by the experimental observables. We carefully define the in-medium state of the pion and find that the pion wave function plays an essential role for the in-medium pion properties. We show that the linear density correction is dominated and the next-leading corrections is not so large at the saturation density, while their contributions can be significant in higher densities. The main contribution of the next-leading order comes from the double scattering term. We also discuss whether the low energy theorems, the Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner relation and the Glashow--Weinberg relation, are satisfied in nuclear medium beyond the linear density approximation. We find also that the wave function renormalization is enhanced as largely as $50\%$ at the saturation density including the next-leading contribution and the wave function renormalization could be measured in the in-medium $π^0\to γγ$ decay.

Predicting magic numbers of nuclei with semi-realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions

Magic numbers are predicted in wide range of the nuclear chart by the self-consistent mean-field calculations with the M3Y-P6 and P7 semi-realistic $NN$ interactions. The magic numbers are identified by vanishing pair correlations in the spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov regime. We also identify submagic numbers when energy gain due to the pairing is sufficiently small. It is found that the results with M3Y-P6 well correspond to the known data, apart from a few exceptions. For some of the magic or submagic numbers the prediction differs from that with the Gogny-D1S or D1M interaction. Roles of the tensor force and the spin-isospin channel originating from the one-pion exchange potential are investigated in the $Z$- or $N$-dependence of the shell gap.

Fermionic Functional Renormalization Group Approach to Superfluid Phase Transition

Fermionic functional renormalization group (FRG) is applied to describe the superfluid phase transition of the two-component fermionic system with attractive contact interaction. Connection between the fermionic FRG approach and the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory with Gorkov and Melik-Barkhudarov (GMB) correction are clarified in details in the weak coupling region by using the renormalization group flow of the fermionic four-point vertex with particle-particle and particle-hole scattering contributions. To go beyond the BCS+GMB theory, coupled FRG flow equations of the fermion self-energy and the four-point vertex are studied under an Ansatz concerning their frequency/momentum dependence. We found that the fermion self-energy turns out to be substantial even in the weak couping region, and the frequency dependence of the four-point vertex is essential to obtain the correct asymptotic-ultraviolet behavior of the flow for the self-energy. The superfluid transition temperature and the associated chemical potential are calculated in the region of negative scattering lengths.

Three-Body Bound State Calculations by Using Three-Dimensional Low Momentum Interaction $V_{low-k}$

Three-dimensional (3D) Faddeev integral equations are solved for three-body (3B) bound state problem without using the partial wave (PW) form of low momentum two-body (2B) interaction $V_{low-k}$ which is constructed from spin independent Malfliet-Tjon V (MT-V) potential. The dependence of 3B binding energy on the cutoff momentum of $V_{low-k}$ is investigated for a wide range of $Λ$ from $1.0$ to $7.0\, fm^{-1}$. The properties of Faddeev components and 3B wave function are displayed and the effect of number of grid points for momentum and angle variables on the accuracy and the stability of numerical results is studied by calculation of the expectation value of total Hamiltonian.

Mass and radius formulas for low-mass neutron stars

Neutron stars, produced at the death of massive stars, are often regarded as giant neutron-rich nuclei. This picture is especially relevant for low-mass (below about solar mass) neutron stars, where non-nucleonic components are not expected to occur. Due to the saturation property of nucleonic matter, leading to the celebrated liquid-drop picture of atomic nuclei, empirical nuclear masses and radii can be approximately expressed as function of atomic mass number. It is, however, not straightforward to express masses and radii of neutron stars even in the low-mass range where the structure is determined by a balance between the pressure of neutron-rich nucleonic matter and the gravity. Such expressions would be of great use given possible simultaneous mass and radius measurements. Here we successfully construct theoretical formulas for the masses and radii of low-mass neutron stars from various models that are consistent with empirical masses and radii of stable nuclei. In this process, we discover a new equation-of-state parameter that characterizes the structure of low-mass neutron stars. This parameter, which plays a key role in connecting the mass-radius relation of the laboratory nuclei to that of the celestial objects, could be constrained from future observations of low-mass neutron stars.

Many-body perturbation theory for the nuclear equation of state up to fifth order

We present an automated, GPU-accelerated framework for many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) calculations of the zero-temperature nuclear equation of state (EOS) based on chiral nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) interactions. Automated diagram generation and evaluation enable the computation of all diagrams up to fifth order in the MBPT expansion at the normal-ordered two-body level in infinite matter, with residual three-body contributions explicitly included up to third order. Multi-GPU acceleration of 3N normal ordering, a novel Monte Carlo integrator (called PVegas), and further advances in high-performance computing enable us to evaluate all 840 fifth-order diagrams with controlled numerical uncertainties. We investigate the MBPT convergence up to fifth order in pure neutron matter (PNM) and symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) for two sets of chiral interactions, study neutron star matter, and present fourth-order results for asymmetric matter including normal-ordered 3N forces. The framework enables systematic MBPT studies with harder interactions and benchmarks against nonperturbative methods. It can be further extended to finite-temperature EOS calculations and to improved uncertainty quantification using emulation and resummation techniques.

Testing microscopic nuclear-density inputs for deformation-sensitive observables in relativistic $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U and $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions

Recent STAR measurements of $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U/$^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au ratios provide a sensitive test of nuclear deformation in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, but the elliptic-flow, triangular-flow, and transverse-momentum-related observables are not simultaneously described within existing calculations. We use three-dimensional lattice covariant density functional theory (CDFT) with pairing correlations to provide microscopic density distributions of both $^{238}$U and $^{197}$Au for event-by-event hydrodynamic simulations. The CDFT densities substantially improve the description of the ultracentral elliptic-flow ratio, while the octupole-deformed uranium configuration yields a larger triangular-flow ratio than the reflection-symmetric configuration. In contrast, the transverse-momentum-related ratios remain difficult to describe within the present framework. We further show that variations of the density of the odd-mass $^{197}$Au reference nucleus can produce changes in the triangular-flow ratio comparable to the separation between the two uranium configurations. These results demonstrate that both the uranium structure and the reference-nucleus density must be controlled before quantitative nuclear-structure constraints can be extracted from high-energy collisions.
