The Impact of Thermal Conductivity and Diffusion Rates on Water Vapor Transport through Gas Diffusion Layers

Water management in a hydrogen polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell is critical for performance. The impact of thermal conductivity and water vapor diffusion coefficients in a gas diffusion layer (GDL) has been studied by a mathematical model. The fraction of product water that is removed in the vapour phase through the GDL as a function of GDL properties and operating conditions has been calculated and discussed. Furthermore, the current model enables identification of conditions when condensation occurs in each GDL component and calculation of temperature gradient across the interface between different layers, providing insight into the overall mechanism of water transport in a given cell design. Water transport mode and condensation conditions in the GDL components depend on the combination of water vapor diffusion coefficients and thermal conductivities of the GDL components. Different types of GDL and water removal scenarios have been identified and related to experimentally-determined GDL properties.

Experimental and theoretical study of the B(2)$^2 Σ^+ \rightarrow$ X(1)$^2 Σ^+$ system in the KSr molecule

Spectral bands for the B(2)$^{2}Σ^{+}\rightarrow$ X(1)$^{2}Σ^{+}$ electronic transition in the doubly-polar open-shell KSr molecule are recorded at moderate resolution using the thermoluminescence technique. The spectra are simulated using three kinds of advanced electronic structure calculations, allowing for an assessment of their accuracy on one hand, and for the derivation of fundamental spectroscopic constants of the X(1)$^{2}Σ^{+}$ KSr ground state and the excited electronic state B(2)$^{2}Σ^{+}$, on the other hand. These results should facilitate further studies aiming at creating ultracold bosonic or fermionic KSr molecules.

Femtosecond study of the effects of ions on the reorientation dynamics of water

We study the effects of ions on the reorientation dynamics of liquid water with polarization-resolved femtosecond mid-infared spectroscopy. We probe the anisotropy of the excitation of the O-D stretch vibration of HDO molecules in solutions of NaCl, NaI and tetra-alkylammonium bromide salts in 8 percent HDO:H2O. We find that the reorientation O-D groups of HDO molecules hydrating the Cl- and I- anions occurs on two different time scales with time constants of 2pm0.3 ps and 9pm2 ps. The fast component is due to a wobbling motion of the O-D group that keeps the hydrogen bond with the halogenic anion intact. For solutions of tetra-alkylammonium bromide salts we observe a very strong slowing down of the reorientation of water that is associated with the hydration of the hydrophobic alkyl groups of the tetra-alkylammonium ions.

Surface tension of molecular liquids: Lattice gas approach

The approach of global isomorphism between the fluid and the Ising model is applied to obtain an expression for the surface tension of the Lennard-Jones fluid on the basis of the information about the Ising model. This is done in a broad interval of temperatures along the phase coexistence, and is valid both in 2D and 3D. The relation between the critical amplitudes of the surface tension of the fluid and the Ising model is derived in the vicinity of the critical point. The obtained theoretical estimates agree well with the literature results for the surface tension. The methodology is demonstrated for the 2D LJ fluid on the basis of the exact solution of the 2D Ising model and is tested for the 3D LJ fluid. As a result, an expression for the surface tension without any fitting parameter is derived.

A UV-cured nanofibrous membrane of vinylbenzylated gelatin-poly(ε-caprolactone) dimethacrylate co-network by scalable free surface electrospinning

Electrospun nanofibrous membranes of natural polymers, such as gelatin, are fundamental in the design of regenerative devices. Crosslinking of electrospun fibres from gelatin is required to prevent dissolution in water, to retain the original nanofibre morphology after immersion in water, and to improve the thermal and mechanical properties, although this is still challenging to accomplish in a controlled fashion. In this study, we have investigated the scalable manufacture and structural stability in aqueous environment of a UV-cured nanofibrous membrane fabricated by free surface electrospinning (FSES) of aqueous solutions containing vinylbenzylated gelatin and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) dimethacrylate (PCL-DMA). Vinylbenzylated gelatin was obtained via chemical functionalisation with photopolymerisable 4-vinylbenzyl chloride (4VBC) groups, so that the gelatin and PCL phase in electrospun fibres were integrated in a covalent UV-cured co-network at the molecular scale, rather than being simply physically mixed. UV-cured nanofibrous membranes did not dissolve in water and showed enhanced thermal and mechanical properties, with respect to as-spun samples, indicating the effectiveness of the photo-crosslinking reaction. In addition, UV-cured gelatin/PCL membranes displayed increased structural stability in water with respect to PCL-free samples and were highly tolerated by G292 osteosarcoma cells. These results therefore support the use of PCL DMA as hydrophobic, biodegradable crosslinker and provide new insight on the scalable design of water insoluble, mechanical competent gelatin membranes for healthcare applications.

Conformal Titanium Nitride in a Porous Silicon Matrix: a Nanomaterial for In-Chip Supercapacitors

Today's supercapacitor energy storages are typically discrete devices aimed for printed boards and power applications. The development of autonomous sensor networks and wearable electronics and the miniaturisation of mobile devices would benefit substantially from solutions in which the energy storage is integrated with the active device. Nanostructures based on porous silicon (PS) provide a route towards integration due to the very high inherent surface area to volume ratio and compatibility with microelectronics fabrication processes. Unfortunately, pristine PS has limited wettability and poor chemical stability in electrolytes and the high resistance of the PS matrix severely limits the power efficiency. In this work, we demonstrate that excellent wettability and electro-chemical properties in aqueous and organic electrolytes can be obtained by coating the PS matrix with an ultra-thin layer of titanium nitride by atomic layer deposition. Our approach leads to very high specific capacitance (15 F/cm$^3$), energy density (1.3 mWh/cm$^3$), power density (up to 214 W/cm$^3$) and excellent stability (more than 13,000 cycles). Furthermore, we show that the PS-TiN nanomaterial can be integrated inside a silicon chip monolithically by combining MEMS and nanofabrication techniques. This leads to realisation of in-chip supercapacitor, i.e., it opens a new way to exploit the otherwise inactive volume of a silicon chip to store energy.

Roles of liquid structural ordering in glass transition, crystallization, and water's anomalies

The liquid state is one of the fundamental and essential states of matter, but its physical understanding is far behind the other states, such as the gas and solid states, due to the difficulties associated with the high density causing many-body correlations and the lack of long-range order. Significant open problems in liquid science include glass transition, crystallization, and water's anomalies. Austen Angell has contributed tremendously to these problems and proposed many new concepts of fundamental importance. In this article, we review how these concepts have influenced our work on liquid physics, focusing on the roles of liquid structural ordering in glass transition, crystallization, and water's anomalies.

Asphaltene aggregation due to waterflooding (A molecular dynamics study)

In the present study, we report our findings on various asphaltenes-water interactions at a high reservoir condition (550 K and 200 bar) and the role of water in asphaltene association during the waterflooding process. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed on oil/water and oil/brine systems. The oil phase is composed of asphaltenes (10 wt%) and o.xylene in which asphaltenes are entirely soluble. Seven different model-asphaltenes with diverse molecular weights, architectures, and heteroatom contents are employed. Interestingly, MD results indicate that asphaltenes become less soluble in oil when water is partially misciblized in the oil phase. All model-asphaltenes containing nitrogen and/or oxygen atoms in their structures are prone to association. The driving force behind asphaltene aggregation is shown to be an asphaltene-water hydrogen bond. The utilization of the brine (3.5 wt% NaCl) instead of pure water induces a slight decrease in asphaltene propensity for aggregation due to salt-in effect. MD results suggest that face-to-face contact is the prominent stacking of asphaltene molecules in their aggregates.

Nucleation stage in supersaturated vapor with inhomogeneities due to nonstationary diffusion onto growing droplets

An analytical description of nucleation stage in a supersaturated vapor with instantly created supersaturation is given with taking into account the vapor concentration inhomogeneities arising as a result of depletion due to non-stationary diffusion onto growing droplets. This description suggests that the intensity of the nucleation of new droplets is suppressed in spherical diffusion regions of a certain size surrounding previously nucleated droplets, and remains at the initial level in the remaining volume of the vapor-gas medium. The value of volume excluded from nucleation depends on the explicit form of the vapor concentration profile in the space around the growing droplet, and we use for that the unsteady self-similar solution of time-dependent diffusion equation with a convective term describing the flow of the gas-vapor mixture caused by moving surface of single growing droplet. The main characteristics of the phase transition at the end of the nucleation stage are found and compared with those in the theory of nucleation with homogeneous vapor consumption (the theory of mean-field vapor supersaturation).

Theory of dipolaron solutions

A fundamental task of statistical physics is to predict the system's statistical properties and compare them with observable data. We formulate the theory of dipolaron solutions and analyze the screening effects for permanent and field-induced dipolarons. The mathematical treatment of the collective behaviour and microscopical morphology of dipolaron solutions are discussed. The presented computations show that the electric field shielding of dipolarons in dielectric nanosolutions is quite different from that of counterionic nano-complexes of Debye-Hückel theory of electrolytes. The limiting case of screening length $λ=0$ in dipolaron solutions corresponds to Coulomb's law for the potential and field of uniformly charged sphere.

The rate coefficients of unimolecular reactions in the systems with power-law distributions

The rate coefficient formulae of unimolecular reactions are generalized to the systems with the power-law distributions based on nonextensive statistics, and the power-law rate coefficients are derived in the high and low pressure limits, respectively. The numerical analyses are made of the rate coefficients as functions of the nu-parameter, the threshold energy, the temperature and the number of degrees of freedom. We show that the new rate coefficients depend strongly on the nu-parameter different from one (thus from a Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution). Two unimolecular reactions are taken as application examples to calculate their power-law rate coefficients, which obtained with the nu-parameters slightly different from one can be exactly in agreement with all the experimental studies on these two reactions in the given temperature ranges.

Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Efficient Flame Retardant Coatings Based On High Aspect Ratio Graphene Oxide and Chitosan Capable of Preventing Ignition of PU Foam

The layer-by-layer (LbL) technique is adopted for the construction of multilayers encompassing chitosan and graphene oxide (GO) platelets capable of improving the flame retardant properties open cell PU foams. The LbL assembly follows a linear growth regime as evaluated by infrared spectroscopy and yields a multilayer structure where GO platelets are embedded within a chitosan continuous matrix. 3 and 6 bi-layers (BL) can efficiently coat the complex 3D structure of the foam and substantially improve its flame retardant properties. 3BL only add 10% to the original mass and can suppress the melt dripping during flammability and reduce both the peak of heat release rate by 54% and the total smoke released by 59% in forced combustion tests. Unprecedented among other LbL assemblies employed for FR purposes, the deposition 6BL is capable of slowing down the release of combustible volatile to the limits of non-ignitability thus preventing ignition in half of the specimens during cone calorimetry tests. This has been ascribed to the formation of a protective coating where the thermally stable char produced by chitosan serves as a continuous matrix embedding GO platelets, which control volatile release while mechanically sustaining the PU foam structure.

Computational study of the effects of density, fuel content, and moisture content on smoldering propagation of cellulose and hemicellulose mixtures

Smoldering combustion plays an important role in forest and wildland fires. Fires from smoldering combustion can last for long periods of time, emit more pollutants, and be difficult to extinguish. This makes the study of smoldering in woody fuels and forest duff important. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin are the major constituents in these type of fuels, in different proportions for different fuels. In this paper, we developed a 1-D model using the open-source software Gpyro to study the smoldering combustion of cellulose and hemicellulose mixtures. We first validated our simulations against experimentally obtained values of propagation speed for mixtures with fuel compositions including 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% cellulose, with the remaining proportion of hemicellulose. Then, we studied the effects of varying fuel composition, density, and moisture content on smoldering combustion. We find that propagation speed of smoldering increased with decreases in density and increases in hemicellulose content, which we attribute to the role of oxygen diffusion. Propagation speed increased with moisture content for pure cellulose up to a certain limiting value, after which the propagation speed dropped by up to 70%. The mean peak temperature of smoldering increased with increases in hemicellulose content and density, and decreased with increasing moisture content.

Development of an Ion-Sensor using Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer

A method is presented for the sensing of ions by determining the concentration of corresponding salts (KCl, NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, FeCl3, FeSO4, AlCl3) in water, based on Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process. The principle of the proposed sensor is based on the change of FRET efficiency between two laser dyes Acriflavine and Rhodamine B in presence of different ions (K+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Al3+). Nanodimensional clay platelet laponite was used to enhance the efficiency of the sensor.

Ultrasensitive and fast single wavelength plasmonic hydrogen sensing with anisotropic nanostructured Pd films

Anisotropic nanostructured porous Pd films are fabricated using oblique angle deposition in vacuum on a glass substrate. They display a dichroic response, due to localised surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) within the nanoparticles forming the film, dependent on the incident light polarisation. Ultrasensitive hydrogen sensing is reached by using these films in conjunction with a differential optical technique derived from the reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy. The evolution of the samples optical responses is monitored during the formation of Pd hydride in both the dilute alpha-phase and the dense beta-phase, whilst the samples are exposed to different concentration of H2 in Ar (from 100 percent H2 to a few ppm). The measurements are performed at a single wavelength in the visible range and at 22 deg C. The results show that a quantitative measurement of the hydrogen concentration in a carrier gas can be measured throughout the concentration range. The limit of detection is 10 ppm and the time for detecting the presence of H2 in the carrying gas is below one second at concentration down to 0.25 percent of H2 in Ar. Furthermore, the optical anisotropy of the samples and its evolution with exposure to H2 are correctly reproduced with an effective medium theory.

Impedance spectroscopy studies on lead free Ba$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$(Ti0$_{.9}$Zr$_{0.1}$)O$_3$ ceramics

Ba1-xMgx(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3(x= 0.01 and 0.02) ceramics were prepared using the conventional solid state reaction. Rietveld refinement performed on X-ray diffraction patterns indicates that the samples are tetragonal crystal structure with P4mm space group. By increasing Mg content from 1 to 2% the unit cell volume decreased. Likewise, the grains size is greatly reduced from 10 to 4 micrometer. The temperature dependence of dielectric constants at different frequencies exhibited typical relaxor ferroelectric characteristic, with sensitive dependence in frequency and temperature for ac conductivity. The obtained activation energy values were correlated to the proposed conduction mechanisms.

Adsorbate surface diffusion: The role of incoherent tunneling in light particle motion

The role of incoherent tunneling in the diffusion of light atoms on surfaces is investigated. With this purpose, a Chudley-Elliot master equation constrained to nearest neighbors is considered within the Grabert-Weiss approach to quantum diffusion in periodic lattices. This model is applied to recent measurements of atomic H and D on Pt(111), rendering friction coefficients that are in the range of those available in the literature for other species of adsorbates. A simple extension of the model has also been considered to evaluate the relationship between coverage and tunneling, and therefore the feasibility of the approach. An increase of the tunneling rate has been observed as the surface coverage decreases.

Interplay of hydrogen bonding and molecule-substrate interaction in self-assembled adlayer structures of a hydroxyphenyl-substituted porphyrin

The formation of hydrogen-bonded organic nano-structures and the role of the substrate lattice thereby were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. The self-organization of 5,10,15,20-tetra(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (H2THPP) molecules leads to two molecular arrangements on Au(111). One of these is characterized by pair-wise hydrogen bonding between hydroxyl groups and a low packing density which enables a rotation of individual molecules in the structure. A different interaction with stronger chain-like hydrogen bonding and additional interactions of phenyl groups was observed for the second structure. The influence of the substrate on the epitaxial behavior is demonstrated by the adsorption of H2THPP on the highly anisotropic Ag(110) substrate. There, several balances between the occupation of favorable adsorption positions and the number of hydrogen bonds per molecule were found. The molecules form molecular chains on Ag(110) and also assemble into two-dimensional periodic arrangements of differently sized close-packed blocks similar to the second type of supramolecular ordering found on Au(111). Dispersion corrected Density Functional Theory calculations were applied to understand the adsorption and complex epitaxy of these molecules. It is shown that the azimuthal orientation of the saddle-shape deformed molecule plays an important role not only for the intermolecular but also for the molecule-substrate interaction.
