Recent progress on the accurate determination of the equation of state of neutron and nuclear matter

The problem of accurately determining the equation of state of nuclear and neutron matter at density near and beyond saturation is still an open challenge. In this paper we will review the most recent progress made by means of Quantum Monte Carlo calculations, which are at present the only ab-inito method capable to treat a sufficiently large number of particles to give meaningful estimates depending only on the choice of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. In particular, we will discuss the introduction of density-dependent interactions, the study of the temperature dependence of the equation of state, and the possibility of accurately studying the effect of the onset of hyperons by developing an accurate hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon-nucleon interaction.

Structure of superheavy nuclei

Properties of transactinide nuclei needed for the interpretation of spectroscopic data and for the extrapolation to the expected "island of stability" of superheavy nuclei are reviewed from a theorist's point of view in the framework of self-consistent mean-field models.

Three-body Force Effects on the Properties of Neutron-rich Nuclear Matter

We review our research work on the single-particle properties and the equation of state (EOS) of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter within the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) approach extended by including a microscopic three-body force (TBF). The TBF is shown to affect significantly the nuclear matter EOS and the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy at high densities above the normal nuclear matter density, and it is necessary for reproducing the empirical saturation property of symmetric nuclear matter in a nonrelativistic microscopic framework. The TBF-induced rearrangement effect and the ground state (g.s.) correlation effect on the s.p. properties in neutron-rich nuclear matter are investigated. Both effects turn out to be crucial for predicting reliably the s.p. properties within the Brueckner framework. The TBF effect on nucleon superfluidity in neutron star matter and neutron stars has also been discussed.

Time-scaled scenario of low-energy heavy-ion collisions

The underlying scenario of low-energy heavy-ion collisions is presented based on time-dependent density-functional calculations. A classification of several types of reaction dynamics is given with respect to their time-scales.

Initial Conditions with Flow from a McLerran Venugopalan model with Transverse Dynamics

Using a recursive solution of the Yang-Mills equation, we calculate analytic expressions for the gluon fields created in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at small times $τ$. We have worked out explicit solutions for the fields and the energy momentum tensor up to 4th order in an expansion in $τ$. We generalize the McLerran-Venugopalan model to allow for a systematic treatment of averaged charge densities $μ^2$ that vary as a function of transverse coordinates. This allows us to calculate radial, elliptic and directed flow of gluon fields. Our results can serve as initial conditions for hydrodynamic simulations of nuclear collisions that include initial flow.

An effective model of QCD thermodynamics

A combined effective model reproducing the equation of state of hadronic matter as obtained in recent lattice QCD simulations is presented. The model reproduces basic physical characteristics encountered in dense hadronic matter in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) phase and the lower temperature hadron resonance gas phase. The hadronic phase is described by means of an extended Mott-Hagedorn resonance gas while the QGP phase is described by the extended PNJL model. The dissociation of hadrons is obtained by including the state dependent hadron resonance width.

Equation of state of hypernuclear matter: tuning hyperon--scalar-meson couplings

We discuss to which extent the modifications of the hyperon--scalar-meson coupling constants affect the equation of state (EoS) hypernuclear matter. The study is carried out within a relativistic density functional theory. The nucleonic matter is described in terms of a density-dependent parametrization of nucleon-meson couplings, whereas the hyperon--meson couplings are deduced from the octet model. We identify the parameter space of hyperon-meson couplings for which massive stellar configurations with $M\le 2.25 M_{\odot}$ exist. We also discuss the EoS at finite temperatures with and without of a trapped neutrino component and show that neutrinos stiffen the EoS and change qualitatively the composition of stellar matter.

Inhomogeneous condensates in dilute nuclear matter and BCS-BEC crossovers

We report on recent progress in understanding pairing phenomena in low-density nuclear matter at small and moderate isospin asymmetry. A rich phase diagram has been found comprising various superfluid phases that include a homogeneous and phase-separated BEC phase of deuterons at low density and a homogeneous BCS phase, an inhomogeneous LOFF phase, and a phase-separated BCS phase at higher densities. The transition from the BEC phases to the BCS phases is characterized in terms of the evolution, from strong to weak coupling, of the condensate wavefunction and the second moment of its density distribution in $r$-space. We briefly discuss approaches to higher-order clustering in low-density nuclear matter.

Kurtoses and high order cumulants: Insights from resummed perturbation theory

Cumulants of conserved charges provide important information about the physics of the quark-gluon plasma around the phase transition region, as they are by construction sensitive to changes in the degrees of freedom of the system. In this brief proceedings contribution, I report on recent results for two such quantities from two different improved perturbative frameworks, as well as discuss their relevance for heavy ion experiments.

In-medium QCD sum rules for D mesons: A projection method for higher order contributions

D mesons serve as excellent probes of hot and/or dense strongly interacting matter. They can provide insight into the restoration of chiral symmetry. The chiral condensate as well as other chirally odd condensates, such as certain four-quark condensates, are linked to order parameters of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. Thus, the evaluation of these higher order condensate contributions in the framework of QCD sum rules is of high interest. We present a general method for projecting Lorentz indices of ground state expectation values providing a crucial step towards a comprehensive calculation of higher order corrections to the operator product expansion of hadrons, especially D mesons, in a strongly interacting medium.

Hydrodynamic models of particle production

Viscous hydrodynamics gives a satisfactory description of the transverse momentum spectra, of the elliptic and triangular flow, and of the femtoscopic correlations for particles produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. On general grounds, a similar collective behavior has been predicted for proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at the LHC. We present results of the hydrodynamics calculation of the elliptic and triangular flow in p-Pb. We discuss the mass dependence of flow coefficients and of the average transverse momentum for identified particles.

Beam energy scan using a viscous hydro+cascade model

Following the experimental program at BNL RHIC, we perform a similar "energy scan" using 3+1D viscous hydrodynamics coupled to the UrQMD hadron cascade, and study the collision energy dependence of pion and kaon rapidity distributions and $m_T$-spectra, as well as charged hadron elliptic flow. To this aim the equation of state for finite baryon density from a Chiral model coupled to the Polyakov loop is employed for hydrodynamic stage. 3D initial conditions from UrQMD are used to study gradual deviation from boost-invariant scaling flow. We find that the inclusion of shear viscosity in the hydrodynamic stage of evolution consistently improves the description of the data for Pb-Pb collisions at CERN SPS, as well as of the elliptic flow measurements for Au-Au collisions in the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at BNL RHIC. The suggested value of shear viscosity is $η/s\ge0.2$ for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=6.3\dots39$ GeV.

Sensitivity to neutron captures and beta-decays of the enhanced s-process in rotating massive stars at low metallicities

The s-process in massive stars, producing nuclei up to $A\approx 90$, has a different behaviour at low metallicity if stellar rotation is significant. This enhanced s-process is distinct from the s-process in massive stars around solar metallicity, and details of the nucleosynthesis are poorly known. We investigated nuclear physics uncertainties in the enhanced s-process in metal-poor stars within a Monte-Carlo framework. We applied temperature-dependent uncertainties of reaction rates, distinguishing contributions from the ground state and from excited states. We found that the final abundance of several isotopes shows uncertainties larger than a factor of 2, mostly due to the neutron capture uncertainties. A few nuclei around branching points are affected by uncertainties in the $β$-decay.

Addition theorems for spin spherical harmonics. I Preliminaries

We develop a systematic approach to deriving addition theorems for, and some other bilocal sums of, spin spherical harmonics. In this first part we establish some necessary technical results. We discuss the factorization of orbital and spin degrees of freedom in certain products of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, and obtain general explicit results for the matrix elements in configuration space of tensor products of arbitrary rank of the position and angular-momentum operators. These results are the basis of the addition theorems for spin spherical harmonics obtained in part II.

Addition theorems for spin spherical harmonics. II Results

Based on the results of part I, we obtain the general form of the addition theorem for spin spherical harmonics and give explicit results in the cases involving one spin-$s'$ and one spin-$s$ spherical harmonics with $s',s=1/2$, 1, 3/2, and $|s'-s|=0$, 1. We obtain also a fully general addition theorem for one scalar and one tensor spherical harmonic of arbitrary rank. A variety of bilocal sums of ordinary and spin spherical harmonics are given in explicit form, including a general explicit expression for bilocal spherical harmonics.

Interacting quark matter equation of state for compact stars

Lattice QCD studies of the thermodynamics of the hot quark-gluon plasma (QGP) demonstrate the importance of accounting for the interactions of quarks and gluons, if one wants to investigate the phase structure of strongly interacting matter. Motivated by this observation and using state-of-the-art results from perturbative QCD, we construct a simple effective equation of state for cold quark matter that consistently incorporates the effects of interactions and furthermore includes a built-in estimate of the inherent systematic uncertainties. This goes beyond the MIT bag model description in a crucial way, yet leads to an equation of state that is equally straightforward to use.
