Relativistic equation of state at subnuclear densities in the Thomas-Fermi approximation

We study the non-uniform nuclear matter using the self-consistent Thomas--Fermi approximation with a relativistic mean-field model. The non-uniform matter is assumed to be composed of a lattice of heavy nuclei surrounded by dripped nucleons. At each temperature $T$, proton fraction $Y_p$, and baryon mass density $ρ_B$, we determine the thermodynamically favored state by minimizing the free energy with respect to the radius of the Wigner--Seitz cell, while the nucleon distribution in the cell can be determined self-consistently in the Thomas--Fermi approximation. A detailed comparison is made between the present results and previous calculations in the Thomas--Fermi approximation with a parameterized nucleon distribution that has been adopted in the widely used Shen EOS.

Skyrme pseudo-potential-based EDF parametrisation for spuriousity-free MR-EDF calculations

First exploratory steps towards a pseudo-potential-based Skyrme energy density functional for spuriousity-free multi-reference calculations are presented. A qualitatively acceptable fit can be accomplished by adding simple three- and four-body contact terms to the standard central plus spin-orbit two-body terms. To achieve quantitative predictive power, higher-order terms, e.g. velocity-dependent three-body terms, will be required.

Approximate relativistic bound states of a particle in Yukawa field with Coulomb tensor interaction

We obtain the approximate relativistic bound state of a spin-1/2 particle in the field of the Yukawa potential and a Coulomb-like tensor interaction with arbitrary spin-orbit coupling number k under the spin and pseudospin (p-spin) symmetries. The asymptotic iteration method is used to obtain energy eigenvalues and corresponding wave functions in their closed forms. Our numerical results show that the tensor interaction removes degeneracies between the spin and p-spin doublets and creates new degenerate doublets for various strengths of tensor coupling.

Treating Coulomb exchange contributions in relativistic mean field calculations: why and how

The energy density functional (EDF) method is very widely used in nuclear physics, and among the various existing functionals those based on the relativistic Hartree (RH) approximation are very popular because the exchange contributions (Fock terms) are numerically rather onerous to calculate. Although it is possible to somehow 'mock up' the effects of meson-induced exchange terms by adjusting the meson-nucleon couplings, the lack of Coulomb exchange contributions hampers the accuracy of predictions. In this note, we show that the Coulomb exchange effects can be easily included with a good accuracy in a perturbative approach. Therefore, it would be desirable for future relativistic EDF models to incorporate Coulomb exchange effects, at least to some order of perturbation.

Finite-amplitude method: An extension to the covariant density functionals

The finite-amplitude method (FAM) is one of the most promising methods for optimizing the computational performance of the random-phase approximation (RPA) calculations in deformed nuclei. In this report, we will mainly focus on our recent progress in the self-consistent relativistic RPA established by using the FAM. It is found that the effects of Dirac sea can be taken into account implicitly in the coordinate-space representation and the rearrangement terms due to the density-dependent couplings can be treated without extra computational costs.

New applications of renormalization group methods in nuclear physics

We review recent developments in the use of renormalization group (RG) methods in low-energy nuclear physics. These advances include enhanced RG technology, particularly for three-nucleon forces, which greatly extends the reach and accuracy of microscopic calculations. We discuss new results for the nucleonic equation of state with applications to astrophysical systems such as neutron stars, new calculations of the structure and reactions of finite nuclei, and new explorations of correlations in nuclear systems.

Dependence of elliptic flow on transverse momentum in 200 GeV Au-Au and 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

We investigate the dependence of elliptic flows $v_2$ on transverse momentum $P_T$ for charged hadrons produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions at high energy by using a multi-source ideal gas model which includes the interaction contribution of the emission sources. Our calculated results are approximately in agreement with the experimental data over a wider $P_T$ range from the STAR and ALICE Collaborations. It is found that the expansion factor increases linearly with the impact parameter from most central (0-5%) to mid-peripheral (35-40%) collisions.

Minimal Ward-Takahashi Vertices and Pion Light Cone Distribution Amplitudes from Gauge Invariant, Nonlocal, Dynamical Quark Model

The gauge-invariant, nonlocal, dynamical quark model is proved to generate the minimal vertices which satisfy the Ward-Takahashi identities. In the chiral limit, the momentum-dependent quark self-energy results in a flat-like form with some end point delta-funtions for the light-cone pion distribution amplitudes, similarly found in the Nambu Jona-Lasino model with constant constituent mass. The leading order nonzero pion and current quark masses corrections lead concave type asymptotic-like form modifications to twist-2 pion distribution amplitude with end point pillars and twist-3 tensor pion distribution amplitude above the flat-like form backgrounds. A by-product of our investigation shows that the variable u appearing in pion light-cone distribution amplitudes is just the standard Feynman parameter in the Feynman parameter integrals; also chiral perturbation works well for these amplitudes.

Universal Relation for the Inelastic Two-Body Loss Rate

Strongly-interacting systems consisting of particles that interact through a large scattering length satisfy universal relations that relate many of their central properties to the contact, which measures the number of pairs with small separations. We use the operator product expansion of quantum field theory to derive the universal relation for the inelastic 2-body loss rate. A simple universal relation between the loss rate and the contact is obtained by truncating the expansion after the lowest dimension operator. We verify the universal relation explicitly by direct calculations in the low-density limit at nonzero temperature. This universal relation can be tested experimentally using ultracold quantum gases of atoms in hyperfine states that have an inelastic spin-relaxation channel.

Spin-flip M1 giant resonance as a challenge for Skyrme forces

Despite a great success of the Skyrme mean-field approach in exploration of nuclear dynamics, it seems to fail in description of the spin-flip M1 giant resonance. The results for different Skyrme parameterizations are contradictory and poorly agree with experiment. In particular, there is no parameterization which simultaneously describes the one-peak gross structure of M1 strength in doubly magic nuclei and two-peak structure in heavy deformed nuclei. The reason of this mismatch could lie in an unsatisfactory treatment of spin correlations and spin-orbit interaction. We discuss the present status of the problem and possible ways of its solution. In particular, we inspect i) the interplay of the collective shift and spin-orbit splitting, ii) the isovector M1 response versus isospin-mixed responses, and iii) the role of tensor and isovector spin-orbit interaction.

Volume Fluctuation and Autocorrelation Effects in the Moment Analysis of Net-proton Multiplicity Distributions in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Moments (Variance ($σ^2$), Skewness($S$), Kurtosis($κ$)) of multiplicity distributions of conserved quantities, such as net-baryon,net-charge and net-strangeness, are predicted to be sensitive to the correlation length of the system and connected to the thermodynamic susceptibilities computed in Lattice QCD and Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model. In this paper, we present several measurement artifacts that could lead to volume fluctuation and auto-correlation effects in the moment analysis of net-proton multiplicity distributions in heavy-ion collisions using the UrQMD model. We discuss methods to overcome these artifacts so that the extracted moments could be used to obtain physical conclusions. In addition we present methods to properly estimate the statistical errors in moment analysis.

Bag vs. NJL models for color-flavor-locked strange quark matter

We compare the mass-radius relationship of strange stars obtained in two theoretical frameworks describing the color-flavor-locking state of dense quark matter: The semi-empirical MIT model and a self-consistent approach using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. In the simplest MIT model extended to include pairing, one can make the equation of state stiffer by increasing the gap parameter so that larger maximum masses for these objects can be reached. In the NJL model, however, such an effect is not possible. To increase the gap parameter within the NJL model to values comparable to those considered in the MIT case, a noticeably increase of the diquark-coupling-constant strength is needed, but this in turn softens the equation of state producing a lower maximum star mass. This behaviour is interpreted as signalling the system crossover at high diquark coupling from a BCS regime to a BEC one, a process that cannot be reproduced within the simple MIT prescription.

Locally anisotropic momentum distributions of hadrons at freeze-out in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

A spheroidal anisotropic local momentum distribution is implemented in the statistical model of hadron production. We show that this form leads to exactly the same ratios of hadronic abundances as the equilibrium distributions, if the temperature is identified with a characteristic transverse-momentum scale. Moreover, to a very good approximation the transverse-momentum spectra of hadrons are the same for isotropic and anisotropic systems, provided the size of the system at freeze-out is appropriately adjusted. We further show that this invariance may be used to improve the agreement between the model and experimental HBT results.

Chiral Hadronic Mean Field Model including Quark Degrees of Freedom

In an approach inspired by Polyakov loop extended NJL models, we present a nonlinear hadronic SU(3) sigma-omega mean field model augmented by quark degrees of freedom. By introducing the effective Polyakov loop related scalar field Φand an associated effective potential, the model includes all known hadronic degrees of freedom at low temperatures and densities as well as a quark phase at high temperatures and densities. Hadrons in the model exhibit a finite volume in order to suppress baryons at high T and μ. This ensures that the right asymptotic degrees of freedom are attained for the description of strongly interacting matter and allows to study the QCD phase diagram in a wide range of temperatures and chemical potentials. Therefore, with this model it is possible to study the phase transition of chiral restoration and deconfinement. In this paper, the impact of quarks on the resulting phase diagram is shown. The results from the chiral model are compared to recent data from lattice QCD.

α-Decay in Ultra-Intense Laser Fields

We investigate the α-decay of a spherical nucleus under the influence of an ultra-intense laser field for the case when the radius vector joining the center-of-masses of the α-particle and the daughter is aligned with the direction of the external field. The time-independent part of the α-daughter interaction is taken from elastic scattering compilations whereas the time-varying part describes the interaction between the decaying system with the laser field. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved numerically by appealing to a modified scheme of the Crank-Nicolson type where an additional first-order time derivative appears compared to the field-free case. The tunneling probability of the α-cluster, and derived quantities (decay rate, total flux) is determined for various laser intensities and frequencies for either continous waves or few-cycle pulses of envelope function F(t)=1. We show that in the latter case pulse sequences containing an odd number of half-cycles determine an enhancement of the tunneling probability compared to the field-free case and the continuous wave case. The present study is carried out taking as example the alpha decaying nucleus $^{106}$Te.

Nucleon-nucleon collision profile and cross section fluctuations

The nucleon-nucleon collision profile, being the basic entity of the wounded nucleon model, is usually adopted in the form of hard sphere or the Gaussian shape. We suggest that the cross section fluctuations given by the gamma distribution leads to the profile function which smoothly ranges between the both limiting forms. Examples demonstrating sensitivity of profile function on cross section fluctuations are discussed.

The influence of strong magnetic fields on proto-quark stars

We analyze different stages of magnetized quark star evolution incorporating baryon number conservation and using an anisotropic energy momentum tensor. The first stages of the evolution are simulated through the inclusion of trapped neutrinos and fixed entropy per particle, while in the last stage the star is taken to be deleptonized and cold. We find that, although strong magnetic fields modify quark star masses, the evolution of isolated stars needs to be constrained by fixed baryon number, which necessarily lowers the possible star masses. Moreover, magnetic field effects, measured by the difference between the parallel and perpendicular pressures, are more pronounced in the beginning of the star evolution, when there is a larger number of charged leptons and up quarks. We also show that having a spatially varying magnetic field allows for larger magnetic fields to be supported.

A new picture for the chiral symmetry properties within a particle-core framework

The Generalized Coherent State Model, proposed previously for a unified description of magnetic and electric collective properties of nuclear systems, is extended to account for the chiral like properties of nuclear systems. To a phenomenological core described by the GCSM a set of interacting particles are coupled. Among the particle-core states one identifies a finite set which have the property that the angular momenta carried by the proton and neutron quadrupole bosons and the particles respectively, are mutually orthogonal. All terms of the model Hamiltonian satisfy the chiral symmetry except for the spin-spin interaction. The magnetic properties of the particle-core states, where the three mentioned angular momenta are orthogonal, are studied. A quantitative comparison of these features with the similar properties of states, where the three angular momenta belong to the same plane, is performed.
