Plasma Lenses: Possible alternative OMD at the ILC

In the baseline design of the International Linear Collider (ILC) an undulator-based source is foreseen for the positron source in order to match the physics requirements. The recently chosen first energy stage with sqrt(s)=250 GeV requires high luminosity and imposes an effort for all positron source designs at high-energy colliders. In this paper we perform a simulation study and adopt the new technology of plasma lenses to capture the positrons generated by the undulator photons and to create the required high luminosity positron beam.

An electron linac with high beam intensity over 1-Ampere for disposal of radioactive waste

In order to dissipate long-lived radioactive waste, not only high ux proton accelerator but also electron linac have been proposed. A proton accelerator directly induces nuclear fission and mutation. On the other hand, electron beam has two processes: production of gamma rays through bremsstrahlung and produced gamma rays are available for the (gamma ; n) reaction. Protons dissipate nuclei and simultaneously newly produce radioisotopes of by-products. Since an electron linac produces less radioactive wastes, we focus only an electron linac with high beam intensity more than 1-Ampere. To reduce the yield of by-products for radioisotopes as less as possible, we accelerate electron beam with the energy less than 30 MeV. The accelerated beam intensity is designed to be more than 1-Ampere. To realize an electron linac with high intensity, the operation for the linac is not pulsed one, but continuous wave. To accelerate electron beam, we install higher-order-modes (HOMs) free normal conducting cavities to suppress beam instabilities.

Electron-Positron Collider Design -- simulations from long proton driven beam to 125GeV witness electron and positron bunches

In this paper, the feasibility of the electron-positron collider based on plasma accelerator is proved by simulation experiments. Starting from the 17.612cm proton beam provided by SPS (super proton synchrotron), the simulation shows that the long proton beam can form several high quality proton bunches through seeded self-modulation in the first half of the long proton beam in a uniform plasma. Then we use these high-quality bunches to excite the wakefield in a uniform plasma and accelerate witness positrons and witness electrons. The simulation results show that the average energy of witness bunches after about 90 meters acceleration is about 125 GeV, and the average acceleration gradient is about 1.3 GeV/m. The center-of-mass (CoM) energy of positron-electron collision is about 125 GeV. The energy spread, witness particle survival rate, emittances and luminorsity of the output witness bunches are also discussed.

Model to study interplay between Beamstrahlung and coupling impedance in future lepton colliders

A semi-analytical model has been developed to study a combined effect of Beamstrahlung due to beam-beam interaction and beam coupling impedance in the future lepton colliders CEPC and FCCee. This model allows evaluating an impact of the coupling impedance on the bunch length and energy spread in collision. The model is benchmarked against numerical simulations. Analytical estimates for the supercolliders are presented.

History of gradient advances in SRF

Radio frequency (RF) superconductivity has become a key technology for many modern particle accelerators. One of its most salient features of this technology is the ability of superconducting RF cavities to deliver high accelerating gradients in continuous-wave and long-pulse modes of operation. However, reaching the current state of the technology was not an easy fit. Over many years scientists and engineers had to overcome several serous performance limitations. In this paper, I attempt to the best of my knowledge to trace the history of accelerating gradients evolution in the field of superconducting radio frequency. I will restrict the scope to primary innovations along with some of the ensuing developments in developing cavities made of bulk niobium. But I will not cover all the many applications and findings over the subsequent decades of progress that were based on the primary discoveries and inventions. I will also not cover a number of other important topics in the history of cavity developments, such as the drive for higher Q values, or the push for lower cavity costs via Nb/Cu cavities or large grain Nb cavities.

Channeling and radiation of electrons and positrons in diamond hetero-crystals

We analyze numerically the radiation and channeling properties of ultrarelativistic electrons and positrons propagating through a periodically bent diamond crystal grown on a straight single-crystal diamond substrate. Such systems can be called hetero-crystals and they are one of the experimentally realized samples for the implementation of crystalline undulators. We state that in such systems the channeling and radiation properties of projectiles are sensitive to the projectile particles energy as well as on the beam propagation direction, i.e. on whether the beam of particles enters the crystal from the side of substrate or from the side of periodically bent crystal. The predictions made are important for design and practical realization of new crystalline undulators.

Damping rate limitations for transverse dampers in large hadron colliders

The paper focuses on two issues important for design and operation of bunch-by-bunch transverse damper in a very large hadron collider, where fast damping is required to suppress beam instabilities and noise induced emittance growth. The first issue is associated with kick variation along a bunch which affects the damping of head-tail modes. The second issue is associated with affect of damper noise on the instability threshold.

Longitudinal Beam Dynamics -- Recap

This paper gives a very brief summary of longitudinal beam dynamics for both linear and circular accelerators. After discussing synchronism conditions in linacs, it focuses on particle motion in synchrotrons. It summarizes the equations of motion, discusses phase-space matching during beam transfer, and introduces the Hamiltonian of longitudinal motion.

Mitigation of Collective Effects by Optics Optimisation

This paper covers recent progress in the design of optics solutions to minimize collective effects such as beam instabilities, intra-beam scattering or space charge in hadron and lepton rings. The necessary steps are reviewed for designing the optics of high-intensity and high-brightness synchrotrons but also ultra-low emittance lepton storage rings, whose performance is strongly dominated by collective effects. Particular emphasis is given to proposed and existing designs illustrated by simulations and beam measurements.

Energy loss reduction of a charge moving through an anisotropic plasma-like medium

We analyze radiation of a charge moving in a vacuum channel in an anisotropic non-gyrotropic medium with plasma-like components of the permittivity tensor. The expressions for field components are obtained and analyzed. It is shown that the field contains both the radiation field and the plasma oscillations. Most attention is focused on the energy loss of the charge per the unit path length. The dependencies of the loss on the charge velocity and the plasma frequencies are studied. The relative roles of radiation loss and polarization one are considered. The most interesting result is that the energy loss is negligible when one of the permittivity tensor components is equal to 1, and the charge velocity tends to the speed of light in vacuum. This effect can be promising for applying in collimators of ultrarelativistic bunches.

Nitrogen Doping and Infusion in SRF Cavities: A Review

Advances in SRF technology over the last 40 years allowed achieving accelerating gradients ~ 50 MV/m corresponding to peak surface magnetic field close to the theoretical limit of niobium. However, the quality factor decreases significantly with increasing accelerating gradient. This decrease is expected since increasing the rf field increases the number of quasiparticles and therefore the rf losses. Recently, a new phenomenon of increase in quality factor with the accelerating gradient has been observed when SRF cavities are doped with certain non-magnetic impurities. In particular, the diffusion of nitrogen into the niobium cavities inner surface has been has been successfully implemented into the commercialization of SRF technology. The quest is still ongoing towards process development to achieve high accelerating gradient SRF structures with high quality factors for future high power accelerators. Here, we present the review of the research and development via nitrogen diffusion, materials analysis and current theoretical understanding in high Q0 SRF cavities.

MBN Explorer atomistic simulations of 855 MeV electron propagation and radiation emission in oriented silicon bent crystal: theory versus experiment

The method of relativistic molecular dynamics is applied for accurate computational modelling and numerical analysis of the channelling phenomena for 855 MeV electrons in bent oriented silicon (111) crystal. Special attention is devoted to the transition from the axial channelling regime to the planar one in the course of the crystal rotation with respect to the incident beam. Distribution in the deflection angle of electrons and spectral distribution of the radiation emitted are analysed in detail. The results of calculations are compared with the experimental data collected at the MAinzer MIctrotron (MAMI) facility.

Diffraction of Cherenkov Radiation at the Open End of a Shallow Corrugated Waveguide

A problem of diffraction of a symmetrical transverse magnetic mode $ \text{TM}_{0l} $ by an open-ended cylindrical waveguide corrugated inside is considered. A depth and a period of corrugations are supposed to be much less than the wavelength and the waveguide radius. Therefore a corrugated waveguide wall can be described in terms of equivalent boundary conditions, i.e. a corresponding impedance boundary condition can be applied. Both vacuum case and the case of uniform dielectric filling of the waveguide is considered. The diffraction problem is solved using the modified tayloring technique in Jones formulation. Solution of the Wiener-Hopf-Fock equation of the problem is used to obtain an infinite linear system for reflection coefficients, the latter can be solved numerically using the reduction technique.

Circuit-model formulas for external-Q factor of resonant cavities with capacitive and inductive coupling

The external-Q factor of a resonant mode of a cavity represents the strength of the electromagnetic coupling between this resonant mode and the transmission mode of a waveguide coupled to the cavity. In this paper, we derive formulas to explicitly give the external Q of the cavities coupled with the waveguide through capacitive and inductive coupling. The derivation is based on the classical method that uses the reflection coefficient to estimate the coupling strength. Although the external Q is evaluated via three-dimensional computer simulations currently, these formulas may be useful for making speculations in the initial stages of cavity design.

Outgassing properties of vacuum materials for particle accelerators

Gas load and pumping determine the quality of vacuum systems. In particle accelerators, once leaks are excluded, outgassing of materials is an important source of gas together with degassing induced by particle beams. Understanding, predicting, and measuring gas release from materials in vacuum are among the fundamental tasks of ultrahigh-vacuum experts. The knowledge of outgassing phenomena is essential for the choice of materials and their treatments so that the required gas density is achieved in such demanding and expensive scientific instruments. This note provides the background to understand outgassing in vacuum and gives references for further study.
