Quantum Mechanics in the general quantum systems (VI): exact series solution of stationary Schrödinger's equation

We obtain a complete series solution of stationary Schrödinger's equation in the general quantum systems. It is exact in the sense that any approximation means is not used, or that the whole corrections or contributions from all order perturbations are involved if the perturbation concept is introduced. Furthermore, the useful forms of our exact solution and a new expression the complete Green operator are given out. As a universal and analytical solution, it is helpful for the theoretical derivations and practical calculations in quantum theory.

Self-Organized V - Mo Oxide Fibers by the Micro-Pulling Down Method

The V2O5-MoO3 mixtures offer a whole range of materials where properties can be adjusted by simple modification of experimental parameters, which may be utilized in manufacturing of metamaterials with on-demand properties. The V2O5-MoO3 system contains an intermediate phase V9Mo6O40, with a small fraction of V4+ instead of V5+. Consequently, this system should rather be considered as pseudobinary. The V4+ content depends on the oxygen partial pressure in the atmosphere. Thus, by changing the oxygen partial pressure one can tailor the electric properties of the system, and by changing the supercooling, the morphologic structure of crystallized bodies as well. For better understanding of this system differential thermal analysis and thermodynamic modeling was performed. Fibers of eutectic composition between V9Mo6O40 and MoO3 were grown by the micro-pulling-down technique. X-ray diffraction confirmed the existence of the V9Mo6O40 intermediate phase.

Separation of carbon dioxide from flue emissions using Endex principles

In an Endex reactor endothermic and exothermic reactions are directly thermally coupled and kinetically matched to achieve intrinsic thermal stability, efficient conversion, autothermal operation, and minimal heat losses. Applied to the problem of in-line carbon dioxide separation from flue gas, Endex principles hold out the promise of effecting a carbon dioxide capture technology of unprecedented economic viability. In this work we describe an Endex Calcium Looping reactor, in which heat released by chemisorption of carbon dioxide onto calcium oxide is used directly to drive the reverse reaction, yielding a pure stream of carbon dioxide for compression and geosequestration. In this initial study we model the proposed reactor as a continuous-flow dynamical system in the well-stirred limit, compute the steady states and analyse their stability properties over the operating parameter space, flag potential design and operational challenges, and suggest an optimum regime for effective operation.

Wavefunction correction scheme for non fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo

Wavefunction correction scheme, which was developed as a variance reduction tool for the pure and fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) computations by Anderson and Freihaut, is applied to the DMC computations of fermions without using the fixed-node constraint. This technique is found to be suitable for the non fixed-node calculations because of the significant decreases observed in the computation times for calculating results with certain statistical error values in the benchmark computations.

On the stability of a very dense deuterium-tritium plasma ball

General conditions of stability of a very dense deuterium-tritium plasma ball are discussed. It is shown that the decrease in the size of a plasma ball (increase in the plasma density) can be expected only when the temperature and the pressure in the plasma ball are kept high enough for all the particles, the nuclei and the delocalized electrons, to be described by classical statistics.

Density functional calculation of many-electron systems in cartesian coordinate grid

A recently developed density functional method, within Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham framework, is used for faithful description of atoms, molecules in Cartesian coordinate grid, by using an LCAO-MO ansatz. Classical Coulomb potential is obtained by means of a Fourier convolution technique. All two-body potentials (including exchange-correlation (XC)) are constructed directly on real grid, while their corresponding matrix elements are computed from numerical integration. Detailed systematic investigation is made for a representative set of atoms/molecules through a number of properties like total energies, component energies, ionization energies, orbital energies, etc. Two nonlocal XC functionals (FT97 and PBE) are considered for pseudopotential calculation of 35 species while preliminary all-electron results are reported for 6 atoms using the LDA XC density functional. Comparison with literature results, wherever possible, exhibits near-complete agreement. This offers a simple efficient route towards accurate reliable calculation of many-electron systems in the Cartesian grid. Future prospect of this method is also discussed.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the potential energy curve of the helium dimer

We report results of both the Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) and Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo (RMC) methods on the potential energy curve of the helium dimer. We show that it is possible to obtain a highly accurate description of the helium dimer. An improved stochastic reconfiguration technique is employed to optimize the many-body wave function, which is the starting point for highly accurate simulations based on the Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) and Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo (RMC) methods. We find that the results of these methods are in excellent agreement with the best theoretical results at short range, especially the recently developed Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo (RMC) method, yield particularly accurate results with reduced statistical error, which gives very excellent agreement across the whole potential curve. For the equilibrium internuclear distance of 5.6 bohr, the calculated total energy with Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo (RMC) method is -5.807483599$\pm$0.000000016 hartrees and the corresponding well depth is -11.003$\pm$0.005 K.

Thermodynamic Evidence for Water as a Quantum Mechanical Liquid

We consider general theoretical models of water and in particular the nature of the motions of the hydrogen nuclei. If the motion of hydrogen nuclei is classical, then the thermodynamic pressure equation of state for heavy water wherein the hydrogen nuclei are deuterons is identical to the pressure equation of state for light water wherein the hydrogen nuclei are protons. Since the experimental thermodynamic phase diagram for light water is clearly measurably different from the experimental thermodynamic phase diagram for heavy water, one may deduce that the motions of hydrogen nuclei are quantum mechanical in nature. This conclusion is in physical agreement with a recent analysis of X-ray, neutron and deep inelastic neutron scattering data.

Ferroelectric hydration shells around proteins: Electrostatics of the protein/water interface

Numerical simulations of hydrated proteins show that protein hydration shells are polarized into a ferroelectric cluster with a large magnitude of its average dipole moment. The emergence of this new mesophase dramatically alters the statistics of electrostatic fluctuations at the protein/water interface. The linear-response relation between the average electrostatic potential and its variance breaks down, with the breadth of the electrostatic noise far exceeding the expectations of the linear response theories. The dynamics of these non-Gaussian electrostatic fluctuations are dominated by a slow (~ 1 ns) component which freezes in at the temperature of dynamical transition of proteins.

Quantum rotator: some examples in modern spirit

Rotation of the nucleus and rotation of the electronic cloud of the atom/ion were considered. It was shown that these rotations are not practically possible. Rotation of the cloud of delocalized electrons and ionic core of a fullerene molecule and these of the ring of a nanotube were discussed. It was shown that the rotation of the cloud of delocalized electrons of a fullerene molecule is possible and it goes in a quantum way when temperature is essentially lower than 40 K. Rotation of the ion core of a fullerene molecule is possible in a classical way only. The same should be said about rotations in the ring of a nanotube.

Helium Clusters Capture of Heliophobes, Strong Depletion and Spin dependent Pick-up Statistics

This much revised and shortened PhD thesis contains many ideas that I could not follow up on, like self destructing beams in scattering cells, the depletion enhancing Wittig tube, ionic seeding via beta-decay foil or Langmuir-Taylor filaments, analysis of the popular ~ Delta(N) relation in droplet size distributions, etc. Avoiding pasting again the usual that is found in many a thesis in the He-droplet field, we focus instead on what is presented insufficiently rigorous elsewhere, like chopper selection, ionization yield curves, or certain widely employed yet wrong derivations. It is not telling much about successes (e.g. first observation of alkali clusters A_k on He_N with k > 3, proof of their surface location, prediction of constant signal ratios via spin statistics) but goes mainly into the failures, as these are more interesting to those who like to explore truly new territory. Some ideas here may just need a single good insight of yours to turn them into success.

Manifestation of the strong quadrupole light-molecule interaction in the SEHR spectra of phenazine and pyrazine

The paper demonstrates possibility of giant enhancement of Surface Enhanced Hyper Raman Scattering on the base of qualitative consideration of electromagnetic field near some models of rough metal surfaces and of some features of the dipole and quadrupole light-molecule interaction, such as it was made in the dipole-quadrupole SERS theory. Consideration of symmetrical molecules allows to obtain selection rules for their SEHR spectra and establish such regularity as appearance of the lines, caused by totally symmetric vibrations, transforming after the unit irreducible representation in molecules with the groups, where the elements of symmetry change z on -z . These lines are forbidden in usual HRS spectra. Analysis of literature data on phenazine and pyrazine molecules demonstrates that their SEHR spectra can be explained by the SEHRS dipole-quadrupole theory. Analysis of the SEHR spectra of these molecules reveals appearance of strong forbidden bands, caused by vibrations transforming after the unit irreducible representation that strongly confirms this theory which allows to interpret the whole SEHR spectra in detail. The results corroborate this common mechanism of Surface Enhanced optical processes on molecules adsorbed on rough metal surfaces.

Entropy Considerations in Spin-Selective Radical-Ion-Pair Reactions

Radical-ion-pair reactions were recently shown to manifest a host of non-trivial quantum effects accounted for by quantum measurement theory. An alternative approach purporting to describe the fundamental quantum dynamics of spin-selective radical-ion pair reactions was introduced most recently, bringing to three the competing theories, including the one traditionally used in spin chemistry. We here consider entropy as a fundamental concept enabling a comparison of the predictions of these theories against what is physically acceptable on quite general grounds.

The B-X and C-X band systems of CuCl revisited: A laser-induced fluorescence study in 465-490 nm

We have reinvestigated the B-X and C-X band systems of CuCl by recording the laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectra in 20400-21800 cm^{-1}. The rotational analyses in Hund's case (a) revealed unambiguously a singlet-to-singlet transition nature. The measured lifetimes of a few microseconds seem too long for singlets and too short for triplets, which we think is actually in favor of a picture of singlet ({1}^Pi and {1}^Sigma^{+})-triplet ({3}^Pi_{0,1,2}) mixed states in the B and C band systems of CuCl. The two excited states we observed in our spectra may be the singlets that have been strongly "contaminated" by their triplet neighbors.
