Properties of some (3+1) dimensional vortex solutions of the CP^N model

We construct new classes of vortex-like solutions of the CP^N model in (3+1) dimensions and discuss some of their properties. These solutions are obtained by generalizing to (3+1) dimensions the techniques well established for the two dimensional CP^N models. We show that as the total energy of these solutions is infinite, they describe evolving vortices and anti-vortices with the energy density of some configurations varying in time. We also make some further observations about the dynamics of these vortices.

Spectral probes of the holographic Fermi groundstate: dialing between the electron star and AdS Dirac hair

We argue that the electron star and the AdS Dirac hair solution are two limits of the free charged Fermi gas in AdS. Spectral functions of holographic duals to probe fermions in the background of electron stars have a free parameter that quantifies the number of constituent fermions that make up the charge and energy density characterizing the electron star solution. The strict electron star limit takes this number to be infinite. The Dirac hair solution is the limit where this number is unity. This is evident in the behavior of the distribution of holographically dual Fermi surfaces. As we decrease the number of constituents in a fixed electron star background the number of Fermi surfaces also decreases. An improved holographic Fermi groundstate should be a configuration that shares the qualitative properties of both limits.

Fermionic probes of local quantum criticality in one dimension

We study the spectral functions of fermionic operators in 1+1 dimensional SU(N) Super Yang-Mills theory with 16 supercharges at finite density using the holographically dual D1-brane geometry. This system exhibits quasi-particle peaks indicating the existence of Fermi points about which excitations have a finite relaxation time, in contrast with the Tomonaga-Luttinger model. The finite width may be attributed to the non-trivial interactions of the probe operators with the background density matrix, modeled holographically as a charged black hole. We show that the fermionic correlators can in fact be deduced from known results for fermion probes of the charged AdS4 black hole background, owing to some remarkable coincidences in supergravity truncations.

Frequency and wave number dependence of the shear correlator in strongly coupled hot Yang-Mills theory

We use AdS/QCD duality to compute the finite temperature Green's function G(omega,k;T) of the shear operator T_12 for all omega,k in hot Yang-Mills theory. The goal is to assess how the existence of scales like the transition temperature and glueball masses affects the correlator computed in the scalefree conformal N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We observe sizeable effects for T close to T_c which rapidly disappear with increasing T. Quantitative agreement of these predictions with future lattice Monte Carlo data would suggest that QCD matter in this temperature range is strongly interacting.

Finite size effect on the magnon's correlation functions

We calculate the finite size correction on the three-point correlation function between two giant magnons and one marginal operator. We also check that the structure constant in the string set-up is exactly the same as one of the RG analysis in the gauge theory.

Proton Stability and Light $Z^\prime$ Inspired by String Derived Models

Proton stability is one of the most perplexing puzzles in particle physics. While the renormalizable Standard Model forbids proton decay mediating operators due to accidental global symmetries, many of its extensions introduce such dimension four, five and six operators. Furthermore, it is, in general, expected that quantum gravity only respects local gauge, or discreet, symmetries. String theory provides the arena to study particle physics in a consistent framework of perturbative quantum gravity. An appealing proposition, in this context, is that the dangerous operators are suppressed by an Abelian gauge symmetry, which is broken near the TeV scale. A viable U(1) symmetry should also be anomaly free, be family universal, and allow the generation of fermion masses via the Higgs mechanism. We discuss such U(1) symmetries that arise in quasi--realistic free fermionic heterotic--string derived models. Ensuring that the U(1) symmetry is anomaly free at the low scale requires that the Standard Model spectrum is augmented by additional states that are compatible with the charge assignments in the string models. We construct such string--inspired models and discuss some of their phenomenological implications.

Three-point correlators: Examples from Lunin-Maldacena background

Recently there has been progress on the calculation of three-point functions with two "heavy" operators via semiclassical methods. We extend this analysis to the case of the Lunin-Maldacena background, and examine the suggested procedure for several simple string solutions. By making use of AdS/CFT duality, we derive the relevant correlation functions of operators belonging to the dual N=1 superconformal gauge theory, and recover an important relation connecting the dimensions of "heavy" states and the structure constants.

Effective Field Theory for a Heavy Majorana Fermion

We formulate an effective theory for systems containing a heavy Majorana fermion, such as bound states of a long-lived gluino. This "Majorana HQET" has the same degrees of freedom as the well-studied Dirac HQET. It respects an emergent U(1) symmetry despite the fundamental absence of a U(1) for Majorana fermions. Reparameterization invariance works identically in the two HQETs. Remarkably, while a Dirac HQET may or may not be charge conjugation symmetric, a charge conjugation symmetry emerges in all Majorana HQETs, potentially offering low energy probes to distinguish the two theories.

An improved model of vector mesons in holographic QCD

We analyze the sector of dimension-three vector meson operators in the "hard wall" model of holographic QCD, including the vector and axial currents, dual to gauge fields in the bulk, and the tensor operator $\barψσ^{μν}ψ$, dual to a two-form field satisfying a complex self-duality condition. The model includes the effect of chiral symmetry breaking on vector mesons, that involves a coupling between the dual gauge field and the two-form field. We compute the leading logarithmic terms in the operator product expansion of two-point functions and the leading non-perturbative contribution to the tensor-vector correlator. The result is consistent with the operator product expansion of QCD. We also study the spectrum of vector mesons numerically.

Stability of Schwarzschild black hole in f(R) gravity with the dynamical Chern-Simons term

We perform the stability analysis of the Schwarzschild black hole in $f(R)$ gravity with the parity-violating Chern-Simons (CS) term coupled to a dynamical scalar field $θ$. For this purpose, we transform the $f(R)$ gravity into the scalar-tensor theory by introducing a scalaron $ϕ$, providing the dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity with two scalars. The perturbation equation for the scalar $θ$ is coupled to the odd-parity metric perturbation equation, providing a system of two coupled second order equations, while the scalaron is coupled to the even-parity perturbation equation. This implies that the CS coupling affects the Regge-Wheeler equation, while $f(R)$ gravity does not affect the Zerilli equation. It turns out that the Schwarzschild black hole is stable against the external perturbations if the scalaron is free from the tachyon.

Gravitational collapse of quantum matter

We describe a class of exactly soluble models for gravitational collapse in spherical symmetry obtained by patching dynamical spherically symmetric exterior spacetimes with cosmological interior spacetimes. These are generalizations of the Oppenheimer-Snyder type models to include classical and quantum scalar fields as sources for the interior metric, and null fluids with pressure as sources for the exterior metric. In addition to dynamical exteriors, the models exhibit other novel features such as evaporating horizons, and singularity avoidance without quantum gravity.

Born in an Infinite Universe: a Cosmological Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

We study the quantum measurement problem in the context of an infinite, statistically uniform space, as could be generated by eternal inflation. It has recently been argued that when identical copies of a quantum measurement system exist, the standard projection operators and Born rule method for calculating probabilities must be supplemented by estimates of relative frequencies of observers. We argue that an infinite space actually renders the Born rule redundant, by physically realizing all outcomes of a quantum measurement in different regions, with relative frequencies given by the square of the wave function amplitudes. Our formal argument hinges on properties of what we term the quantum confusion operator, which projects onto the Hilbert subspace where the Born rule fails, and we comment on its relation to the oft-discussed quantum frequency operator. This analysis unifies the classical and quantum levels of parallel universes that have been discussed in the literature, and has implications for several issues in quantum measurement theory. It also shows how, even for a single measurement, probabilities may be interpreted as relative frequencies in unitary (Everettian) quantum mechanics. We also argue that after discarding a zero-norm part of the wavefunction, the remainder consists of a superposition of indistinguishable terms, so that arguably "collapse" of the wavefunction is irrelevant, and the "many worlds" of Everett's interpretation are unified into one. Finally, the analysis suggests a "cosmological interpretation" of quantum theory in which the wave function describes the actual spatial collection of identical quantum systems, and quantum uncertainty is attributable to the observer's inability to self-locate in this collection.

The Equivalence Theorem in Effective Theories

The famous equivalence theorem is reexamined in order to make it applicable to the case of intrinsically quantum infinite-component effective theories. We slightly modify the formulation of this theorem and prove it basing on the notion of generating functional for Green functions. This allows one to trace (directly in terms of graphs) the mutual cancelation of different groups of contributions.

The Case of the Disappearing Instanton

Instantons are tunneling solutions that connect two vacua, and under a small change in the potential, instantons sometimes disappear. We classify these disappearances as smooth (decay rate goes to 0 at disappearance) or abrupt (decay rate not equal to 0 at disappearance). Abrupt disappearances mean that a small change in the parameters can produce a drastic change in the physics, as some states become suddenly unreachable. The simplest abrupt disappearances are associated with annihilation by another Euclidean solution with higher action and one more negative mode; higher-order catastrophes can occur in cases of enhanced symmetry. We study a few simple examples, including the 6D Einstein-Maxwell theory, and give a unified account of instanton disappearances.

Calculation of renormalized fermion effective actions in radially symmetric non-Abelian backgrounds

Our recent method to calculate renormalized functional determinants, the partial wave cutoff method, is extended for the evaluation of 4-D fermion one-loop effective action with arbitrary mass in certain types of radially symmetric, non-Abelian, background gauge fields (including instanton-like and instanton-antiinstanton-like configurations). A detailed study on functional determinants for matrix-valued radial differential operators is presented, explicating both our analytic treatment on the high partial wave contribution and the application of the generalized Gel'fand-Yaglom formula to determine the low partial wave contribution. In general, some numerical work is needed for the low partial wave part. In the massless limit, however, the factorizable nature of our partial-wave radial differential operators can be exploited to evaluate semi-analytically even the low partial wave part, and we thus have the full fermion effective action calculated explicitly in a class of non-Abelian background gauge fields. With nonzero mass, we also perform necessary numerical analysis as regards the low partial wave contribution to produce numerically exact results for the massive effective action. Comparing these against the results of the large mass expansion, the validity range of the large mass expansion is addressed. Also studied is the fermion mass dependence of the effective instanton-antiinstanton interaction.

Baryon-baryon scattering in the Gross-Neveu model: the large N solution

The scattering of two Dashen-Hasslacher-Neveu (DHN) baryons in the large N Gross-Neveu model is solved exactly using the relativistic, time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach. Unlike the special case of kink-antikink scattering, the scattering of DHN baryons is sensitive to the back-reaction of the fermions bound inside the baryons. Correspondingly the solution is much more complicated than the kink-antikink scattering solutions, which can be expressed in terms of sinh-Gordon solitons. Nevertheless, we present a simple ansatz form that gives closed analytic expressions for both the space-time dependent mean fields and the Dirac spinors for all continuum and bound states. The solution can also be applied to the scattering of polarons and solitons in conducting polymers.

An algebraic construction of twin-like models

If the generalized dynamics of K field theories (i.e., field theories with a non-standard kinetic term) is taken into account, then the possibility of so-called twin-like models opens up, that is, of different field theories which share the same topological defect solution with the same energy density. These twin-like models were first introduced in Phys. Rev. D 82, 105006 (2010), Ref. [1], where the authors also considered possible cosmological implications and gave a geometric characterization of twin-like models. A further analysis of the twin-like models was accomplished in Phys. Rev. D 84, 045010 (2011), Ref. [2], with the help of the first order formalism, where also the case with gravitational self-interaction was considered. Here we show that by combining the geometric conditions of Ref. [1] with the first order formalism of Ref. [2], one may easily derive a purely algebraic method to explicitly calculate an infinite number of twin field theories for a given theory. We determine this algebraic construction for the cases of scalar field theories, supersymmetric scalar field theories, and self-gravitating scalar fields. Further, we give several examples for each of these cases.

N >= 4 Supergravity Amplitudes from Gauge Theory at One Loop

We expose simple and practical relations between the integrated four- and five-point one-loop amplitudes of N >= 4 supergravity and the corresponding (super-)Yang-Mills amplitudes. The link between the amplitudes is simply understood using the recently uncovered duality between color and kinematics that leads to a double-copy structure for gravity. These examples provide additional direct confirmations of the duality and double-copy properties at loop level for a sample of different theories.
