Holographic trace anomaly at finite temperature

We find an exact coordinate transformation rule from the $AdS_5$ Schwarzschild black hole in the Poincare and the global patch to the Fefferman-Graham coordinate system. Using these results, we evaluate the corresponding holographic stress tensor and trace anomaly of the boundary theory as a function of the radial coordinate. Following the AdS/CFT correspondence, we reinterpret the radial coordinate dependence of the trace anomaly as the Wilsonian renormalization group(RG) flow of the boundary theory.

Triadophilia: A Special Corner in the Landscape

It is well known that there are a great many apparently consistent vacua of string theory. We draw attention to the fact that there appear to be very few Calabi--Yau manifolds with the Hodge numbers h^{11} and h^{21} both small. Of these, the case (h^{11}, h^{21})=(3,3) corresponds to a manifold on which a three generation heterotic model has recently been constructed. We point out also that there is a very close relation between this manifold and several familiar manifolds including the `three-generation' manifolds with χ=-6 that were found by Tian and Yau, and by Schimmrigk, during early investigations. It is an intriguing possibility that we may live in a naturally defined corner of the landscape. The location of these three generation models with respect to a corner of the landscape is so striking that we are led to consider the possibility of transitions between heterotic vacua. The possibility of these transitions, that we here refer to as transgressions, is an old idea that goes back to Witten. Here we apply this idea to connect three generation vacua on different Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Insights and puzzles in light quark physics

Recent work in light flavour hadron physics is reviewed. In particular, I discuss the significance of the progress achieved with light dynamical quarks on the lattice for the effective low energy theory of QCD. Also, I draw attention to some puzzling results from NA48 and KTeV concerning the scalar form factor relevant for Kmu3 decay -- taken at face value, these indicate physics beyond the Standard Model.

Exclusive Meson Production at NLO

We report on numerical studies of the NLO corrections to exclusive meson electroproduction, both in collider and fixed-target kinematics. Corrections are found to be huge at small xB and sizeable at intermediate or large xB.

Penguin Loops for Nonleptonic B-Decays in the Standard Model: Is there a Penguin Puzzle?

We compute standard model penguin amplitudes in nonleptonic B-decays to light charmless mesons using tree amplitude data to fix hadronic parameters. The leading calculation is carried out for the alphas(mb) penguin contributions from charm quark, up quark, and magnetic penguin loops in the NDR and HV renormalization schemes. Power suppressed penguins that are proportional to the chiral condensate are also computed using a new factorization formula for these terms, which is derived working to all orders in alphas(sqrt{mbΛ}). We demonstrate using SCET1 that this formula exhibits only small perturbative phases and does not have endpoint singularities. Due to our use of data to fix hadronic parameters we obtain significantly more accurate predictions for the short-distance standard model penguin amplitudes than have been found in the past. Analyzing data in B-> pi pi, B->K pi, and B->rho rho for the penguin amplitudes we find that standard model short-distance imaginary parts are an order of magnitude smaller than current measurements, while real parts are up to a factor of two smaller with the correct sign. This difference is most likely a consequence of long-distance charm contributions or new physics. Constraints on the type of new physics that could help explain the data are derived, and used to show that current data favors sizeable long-distance strong phases.

Rare Kaon Decays Beyond the Standard Model

The rare kaon decays K_L -> pi^0 nu {bar nu}, K^+ -> pi^+ nu {bar nu}, K_L -> pi^0 e^+ e^- and K_L -> pi^0 mu^+ mu^- are theoretically very clean and, being strongly CKM suppressed, highly sensitive to New Physics (NP). Recent Flavour Physics analyses show that they represent unique probes for revealing NP effects and to provide information on the NP flavour structure. After a brief discussion of the main properties that make rare K decays so promising and of the basic ideas of the most interesting NP models, we review the results of recent phenomenological analyses both within and beyond the framework of Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV), where the sources of flavour violation are the same as in the Standard Model. Within MFV we present the expectations found for rare K decays from a model-independent analysis and in three MFV models: the Littlest Higgs (LH) model, the (extra-dimension) Appelquist-Cheng-Dobrescu model and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with MFV. Beyond MFV, we discuss the results recently found within the MSSM (without MFV), the LH model with T-parity (LHT) and the 3-3-1 (Z') model. While in MFV models only small (<30%) NP effects are allowed in the branching ratios of K_L -> pi^0 nu {bar nu}, K^+ -> pi^+ nu {bar nu}, K_L -> pi^0 e^+ e^- and K_L -> pi^0 mu^+ mu^-, beyond MFV, in particular in the MSSM and in the LHT model, large (up to an order of magnitude) enhancements w.r.t. the SM turn out to be possible.

Dijet correlations in $pp$ collisions at RHIC

We compare results of $k_t$-factorization approach and next-to-leading order collinear-factorization approach for dijet correlations in proton-proton collisions at RHIC energies. We discuss correlations in azimuthal angle as well as correlations in two-dimensional space of transverse momenta of two jets. Some $k_t$-factorization subprocesses are included for the first time in the literature. Different unintegrated gluon/parton distributions are used in the $k_t$-factorization approach. The results depend on UGDF/UPDF used. Limitations due to leading jet condition are discussed.

Photon-jet correlations in hadronic collisions

We compare results of $k_t$-factorization approach and next-to-leading order collinear-factorization approach for photon-jet correlations in $pp$ and $p \bar p$ collisions at RHIC, Tevatron and LHC energies. We discuss correlations in azimuthal angle as well as in two-dimensional space of transverse momenta of photon and jet. Different unintegrated parton distributions (UPDF) are included in the $k_t$-factorization approach. The results depend on UPDFs used. The results of NLO collinear-factorization are shown for comparison.

Diffraction at HERA and implications for Tevatron and LHC

We describe new QCD fits to diffractive cross sections measured at HERA and we use the parton densities derived from these fits to predict the shape of the dijet mass fraction in double Pomeron exchange at the Tevatron. We discuss the existence of exclusive events in this dijet channel and some prospects are given for the LHC.

Two-dimensional phase transition models and λϕ^4 field theory

The overview is given of the results obtained recently in the course of renormalization-group (RG) study of two-dimensional (2D) models. RG functions of the two-dimensional n-vector λϕ^4 Euclidean field theory are written down up to the five-loop terms and perturbative series are resummed by the Pade-Borel-Leroy techniques. An account for the five-loop term is shown to shift the Wilson fixed point only briefly, leaving it outside the segment formed by the results of the lattice calculations. This is argued to reflect the influence of the non-analytical contribution to the β-function. The evaluation of the critical exponents for n = 1, n = 0 and n = -1 in the five-loop approximation and comparison of the results with known exact values confirm the conclusion that non-analytical contributions are visible in two dimensions. The estimates obtained on the base of pseudo-εexpansions originating from the 5-loop 2D RG series are also discussed.

FPCP Theory Overview

We first review some aspects of the determination of the sides and angles of the unitarity triangle. We pay particular attention to theory shortcomings, and present many alternative proposals for the determination of |Vub| (which at present is problematic). We then turn our attention to the more general question: What have we learned so far about flavor physics and where do we go from here? We argue that the aim of Flavor Physics should be to establish or rule out Minimal Flavor Violating interactions up to a scale of 10 TeV.

Transverse $Λ^0$ polarization in inclusive photoproduction: quark recombination model

Transverse polarization of $Λ^0$ hyperons in inclusive photoproduction at x_F>0 is tackled within the framework of the quark recombination model, which has been successfully applied to the polarization of different hyperons in a variety of unpolarized hadron-hadron reactions. The results are compared with recent experimental data of HERMES.

Prospects of Jet Tomography Using Hard Processes inside a Soft Medium

The term 'tomography' is commonly applied to the idea of studying properties of a medium by the modifications this medium induces to a known probe propagating through it. In the context of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, rare high transverse momentum (p_T) processes taking place alongside soft bulk-matter production can be viewed as a tomographic probe as long as the energy scales are such that the modification of high p_T processes can be dominantly ascribed to interactions with the medium during the propagation of partons. Various high p_T observables have been suggested for tomography, among them hard single hadron suppression, dihadron correlations and gamma-hadron correlations. In this paper, we present a model study of a number of different observables within the same calculational framework to assess the sensitivity of the observables to different properties of the medium and discuss the prospects of obtaining tomographic information.

On quantization of massive non-Abelian gauge fields

A simpler method of quantization is given for massive gauge theories. This method gives the same results as those of the conventional massive gauge theory with ghost and Higgs fields under the Higgs mass. Besides, we point out physical importance of helicity zero states in non-Abelian gauge theories even in massless case. Furthermore, forms of mass terms that were impossible before, e.g. symmetric mass, are possible now. Applying our method to SU(2)xU(1) symmetry has no particular difficulty, and gives a variant of the standard model without the Higgs boson.

Global reanalysis of nPDFs

In this talk, we present the results from our recent global reanalysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs), where the DGLAP-evolving nPDFs are constrained by nuclear hard process data from deep inelastic $l+A$ scattering (DIS) and the Drell-Yan (DY) process in $p+A$ collisions, and by sum rules. The main improvements over our earlier work {\em EKS98} are the automated $χ^2$ minimization, better controllable fit functions and possibility for error estimates. The obtained 16-parameter fit to N=514 datapoints is good, $χ^2/{\rm d.o.f}=0.82$. Fit quality comparison and the error estimates obtained show that the old {\em EKS98} parametrization is fully consistent with the present automated reanalysis. Comparison with other global nPDF analyses is presented as well. Within the DGLAP framework we also discuss the possibility of incorporating a clearly stronger gluon shadowing, which is suggested by the RHIC BRAHMS data from d+Au collisions.
