Conformal Ricci and Matter Collineations for Anisotropic Fluid

We study the consequences of timelike and spaccelike conformal Ricci and conformal matter collineations for anisotropic fluid in the context of General Relativity. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for a spacetime with anisotropic fluid to admit conformal Ricci and conformal matter collineations parallel to u^a and x^a. These conditions for timelike and spacelike conformal Ricci and conformal matter collineations for anisotropic fluid reduce to the conditions of perfect fluid when the heat flux and the traceless anisotropic stress tensor vanish. Further, for $α=0$ (the conformal factor), we recover the earlier results of Ricci collineations and matter collineations in each case of timelike and spacelike conformal Ricci collineations and conformal matter collineations for the perfect fluid. Thus our results give the generalization of the results already available in the literature. It is worth noticing that the conditions of conformal matter collineations can be derived from the conditions of conformal Ricci collineations or vice versa under certain constraints.

Quantum Gravity from Simplices: Analytical Investigations of Causal Dynamical Triangulations

A potentially powerful approach to quantum gravity has been developed over the last few years under the name of Causal Dynamical Triangulations. Numerical simulations have given very interesting results in the cases of two, three and four spacetime dimension. The aim of this thesis is to give an introduction to the subject (Chapter 1), and try to push the analytical understanding of these models further. This is done by first studying (Chapter 2) the case of a (1+1)-dimensional spacetime coupled to matter, in the form of an Ising model, by means of high- and low-temperature expansions. And after (Chapter 3) by studying a specific model in (2+1) dimensions, whose solution and continuum limit are presented.

About Bianchi I with time varying constants

In this paper we study how to attack through different techniques a perfect fluid Bianchi I model with variable G, and $Λ.$ These tactics are: Lie groups method (LM), imposing a particular symmetry, self-similarity (SS), matter collineations (MC). and kinematical self-similarity (KSS). We compare both tactics since they are quite similar (symmetry principles). We arrive to the conclusion that the LM is too restrictive and brings us to get only the flat FRW solution with G=const. and $Λ=0$. The SS, MC and KSS approaches bring us to obtain the following solution: G is a decreasing time function and $Λ\thickapprox t^{-2}$, with $Λ<0$, while the exponents of the scale factor must satisfy the conditions $\sum_{i=1}% ^{3}α_{i}=1$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{3}α_{i}^{2}<1,$ $\forallω\in(-1,1)$, relaxing in this way the Kasner conditions.

Discovering Relic Gravitational Waves in Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation

The authority of J. A. Wheeler in many areas of gravitational physics is immense, and there is a connection with the study of relic gravitational waves as well. I begin with a brief description of Wheeler's influence on this study. One part of the paper is essentially a detailed justification of the very existence of relic gravitational waves, account of their properties related to the quantum-mechanical origin, derivation of the expected magnitude of their effects, and reasoning why they should be detectable in the relatively near future. This line of argument includes the comparison of relic gravitational waves with density perturbations of quantum-mechanical origin, and the severe criticism of methods and predictions of inflationary theory. Another part of the paper is devoted to active searches for relic gravitational waves in cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB). Here, the emphasis is on the temperature-polarization TE cross-correlation function of CMB. The expected numerical level of the correlation, its sign, statistics, and the most appropriate interval of angular scales are identified. Other correlation functions are also considered. The overall conclusion is such that the observational discovery of relic gravitational waves looks like the matter of a few coming years, rather than a few decades.

On the dynamics of the universe in $D$ spatial dimensions

In this paper we present the equations of the evolution of the universe in $D$ spatial dimensions, as a generalization of the work of Lima \citep{lima}. We discuss the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological equations in $D$ spatial dimensions for a simple fluid with equation of state $p=ω_{D}ρ$. It is possible to reduce the multidimensional equations to the equation of a point particle system subject to a linear force. This force can be expressed as an oscillator equation, anti-oscillator or a free particle equation, depending on the $k$ parameter of the spatial curvature. An interesting result is the independence on the dimension $D$ in a de Sitter evolution. We also stress the generality of this procedure with a cosmological $Λ$ term. A more interesting result is that the reduction of the dimensionality leads naturally to an accelerated expansion of the scale factor in the plane case.

CPT and Decoherence in Quantum Gravity

In this review, I first discuss briefly some theoretical motivations for potential Lorentz Violation and deviation from ordinary quantum mechanical behavior (decoherence) of field theoretic systems in the background of some quantum gravity (QG) models. Both types of effects lead to CPT violation, but they can be disentangled experimentally. I, then, proceed to a description of precision tests of CPT symmetry using neutral and charged Kaons, which are of direct relevance to the main theme of this conference. I emphasize the potentially unique rôle of neutral meson factories in providing ``smoking-gun'' evidence of some QG-decoherence models in which the CPT quantum mechanical operator is not well defined. This is achieved by means of potential observations of QG-induced modifications of the pertinent Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) particle correlations.

Search for Frame-Dragging-Like Signals Close to Spinning Superconductors

High-resolution accelerometer and laser gyroscope measurements were performed in the vicinity of spinning rings at cryogenic temperatures. After passing a critical temperature, which does not coincide with the material's superconducting temperature, the angular acceleration and angular velocity applied to the rotating ring could be seen on the sensors although they are mechanically de-coupled. A parity violation was observed for the laser gyroscope measurements such that the effect was greatly pronounced in the clockwise-direction only. The experiments seem to compare well with recent independent tests obtained by the Canterbury Ring Laser Group and the Gravity-Probe B satellite. All systematic effects analyzed so far are at least 3 orders of magnitude below the observed phenomenon. The available experimental data indicates that the fields scale similar to classical frame-dragging fields. A number of theories that predicted large frame-dragging fields around spinning superconductors can be ruled out by up to 4 orders of magnitude.

Special Relativity and Theory of Gravity via Maximum Symmetry and Localization -- In Honor of the 80th Birthday of Professor Qikeng Lu

Like Euclid, Riemann and Lobachevsky geometries on an almost equal footing, based on the principle of relativity of maximum symmetry proposed by Lu and the postulate on invariant universal constants, dS/AdS SR can be set up on an almost equal footing with Einstein's SR. For dS-case, there is a coin-like relation: A law of inertia in Beltrami atlas with Beltrami time simultaneity for the PoR on one side. The proper-time simultaneity and a RW-like dS-space with entropy and an accelerated expanding S^3 fitting the cosmological principle on another. If our universe is asymptotic to the RW-like dS-space, it should be slightly closed with an entropy bound. Contrarily, via its asymptotic behavior, it can fix on Beltrami frames without `an argument in a circle' and acts as the origin of inertia. There is a triality of conformal extensions of three kinds of SR and their null physics on the projective boundary of a 5-d AdS-space. Thus there is a dS-spacetime on the boundary of a vacuum of supergravity. Gravity should be based on the localized PoR of full maximum symmetry with a gauge-like dynamics. Thus, this may lead to theory of gravity of corresponding local maximum symmetry. A simple model of dS-gravity characterized by a dimensionless constant shows the features. Our universe may already indicate that the dS SR and the dS-gravity be the foundation of large scale physics.

Holographic Dark Energy Model with Modified Generalized Chaplygin Gas

We present a holographic dark energy model of the universe considering modified generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG). The modified GCG behaves as an ordinary barotropic fluid in the early epoch when the universe was tiny but behaves subsequently as a $Λ$CDM model at late epoch. An equivalent model with scalar field is obtained here by constructing the corresponding potential. The holographic dark energy is identified with the modified GCG and we determine the corresponding holographic dark energy field and its potential. The stability of the holographic dark energy in this case is also discussed.

Wormholes with a space- and time-dependent equation of state

The discovery that the Universe is undergoing an accelerated expansion has suggested the existence of an evolving equation of state. This paper discusses various wormhole solutions in a spherically symmetric spacetime with an equation of state that is both space and time dependent. The solutions obtained are exact and generalize earlier results on static wormholes supported by phantom energy.

On the Transfer of Adiabatic Fluctuations through a Nonsingular Cosmological Bounce

We study the transfer of cosmological perturbations through a nonsingular cosmological bounce in a special model in which the parameters of the bounce and the equation of state of matter are chosen such as to allow for an exact calculation of the evolution of the fluctuations. We find that the growing mode of the metric fluctuations in the contracting phase goes over into the growing mode in the expanding phase, a result which is different from what is obtained in analyses in which fluctuations are matched at a singular hypersurface. Consequences for Ekpyrotic cosmology are discussed in a limit when the equation of state of a fluid becomes large.

Greybody Factors for d-Dimensional Black Holes

Gravitational greybody factors are analytically computed for static, spherically symmetric black holes in d-dimensions, including black holes with charge and in the presence of a cosmological constant (where a proper definition of greybody factors for both asymptotically dS and AdS spacetimes is provided). This calculation includes both the low-energy case --where the frequency of the scattered wave is small and real-- and the asymptotic case --where the frequency of the scattered wave is very large along the imaginary axis-- addressing gravitational perturbations as described by the Ishibashi-Kodama master equations, and yielding full transmission and reflection scattering coefficients for all considered spacetime geometries. At low frequencies a general method is developed, which can be employed for all three types of spacetime asymptotics, and which is independent of the details of the black hole. For asymptotically dS black holes the greybody factor is different for even or odd spacetime dimension, and proportional to the ratio of the areas of the event and cosmological horizons. For asymptotically AdS black holes the greybody factor has a rich structure in which there are several critical frequencies where it equals either one (pure transmission) or zero (pure reflection, with these frequencies corresponding to the normal modes of pure AdS spacetime). At asymptotic frequencies the computation of the greybody factor uses a technique inspired by monodromy matching, and some universality is hidden in the transmission and reflection coefficients. For either charged or asymptotically dS black holes the greybody factors are given by non-trivial functions, while for asymptotically AdS black holes the greybody factor precisely equals one (corresponding to pure blackbody emission).

On the Ernst electro-vacuum equations and ergosurfaces

The question of smoothness at the ergosurface of the space-time metric constructed out of solutions (E,phi) of the Ernst electro-vacuum equations is considered. We prove smoothness of those ergosurfaces at which Re(E) provides the dominant contribution to f=-(Re(E)+|phi|^2) at the zero-level-set of f. Some partial results are obtained in the remaining cases: in particular we give examples of leading-order solutions with singular isolated "ergocircles".

Green functions and Euclidean fields near the bifurcate Killing horizon

We approximate a Euclidean version of a D+1 dimensional manifold with a bifurcate Killing horizon by a product of a two-dimensional Rindler space and a D-1 dimensional manifold M. We obtain approximate formulas for the Green functions. We study the behaviour of Green functions near the horizon and their dimensional reduction. We show that if M is compact then the massless minimally coupled quantum field contains a zero mode which is a conformal invariant free field on R^2. Then, the Green function near the horizon can be approximated by the Green function of the two-dimensional quantum field theory. The correction term is exponentially small away from the horizon. If the volume of a geodesic ball is growing to infinity with its radius then the Green function cannot be approximated by a two-dimensional one.

Lorentz Invariance Violation from String Theory

In this brief, and by no means complete, review I discuss situations in string theory, in which Lorentz Invariance Violation may occur in a way consistent with world-sheet conformal invariance, thereby leading to acceptable, in principle, string backgrounds. In particular, I first discuss spontaneous Lorentz violation in (non supersymmetric) open string field theory. Then, I move onto a discussion of gravity-induced modified dispersion relations in non-critical (Liouville) strings, in the sense of an induced Finsler-like geometry depending on both coordinates and momenta, for string propagation in non-trivial space times (such as D-particle ``foamy situations''). I pay attention to explaining the appearance of bi-metric models from such string theories, which could serve as examples of alternative scenaria to dark matter. Finally, I make some comparisons with similar developments in other contexts, such as critical strings in non-commutative space times, as well as deformed special relativities and theories with reduced Lorentz symmetry, advocated recently, where again Finsler geometry seems to come into play. In this latter respect, I put the emphasis on phenomenology and attempt to answer the question as to whether there is the possibility of experimental disentanglement of the various approaches.

Hierarchy Problem, Dilatonic Fifth Force, and Origin of Mass

Based on the fact that the scalar curvature of the internal space determines the mass of the dilaton in higher-dimensional unified theories, we show how the dilaton mass can explain the origin of mass and resolve the hierarchy problem. Moreover, we show that cosmology puts a strong constraint on dilaton mass, and requires the scale of the internal space to be larger than $10^{-9} m$.
