Folding of the frozen-in-fluid di-vorticity field in two-dimensional hydrodynamic turbulence

The vorticity rotor field ${\bf B}=\mbox{rot}\,\mathbfω$ (di-vorticity) for freely decaying two-dimensional hydrodynamic turbulence due to a tendency to breaking is concentrated in the vicinity of the lines corresponding to the position of the vorticity quasi-shocks. The maximum value of the di-vorticity $B_{max}$ at the stage of quasi-shocks formation increases exponentially in time, while the thickness $\ell(t)$ of the maximum area in the transverse direction to the vector ${\bf B}$ decreases in time also exponentially. It is numerically shown that $B_{max} (t)$ depends on the thickness according to the power law: $B_{max}(t)\sim \ell^{-α}(t)$, where the exponent $α\approx 2/3$. This behavior indicates in favor of folding for the divergence-free vector field of the di-vorticity.

FDTD simulation algorithm of magnetized plasma media

A technique of magnetized plasma simulation have been implemented into a well known FDTD solver MEEP as a child class of "susceptibility" class. Magnetized plasma posses gyrotrophic properties, polarization vector is being rotated while the wave propagates through the material. Solid state plasma can be found in semiconductor materials which rises a question of using gyrotrophic properties of plasma in modern photonic development. To test the software, a circular polarized wave propagation through 9mm layer of magnetized plasma has been simulated and compared to the analytical solution.

Employing machine learning for theory validation and identification of experimental conditions in laser-plasma physics

The validation of a theory is commonly based on appealing to clearly distinguishable and describable features in properly reduced experimental data, while the use of ab-initio simulation for interpreting experimental data typically requires complete knowledge about initial conditions and parameters. We here apply the methodology of using machine learning for overcoming these natural limitations. We outline some basic universal ideas and show how we can use them to resolve long-standing theoretical and experimental difficulties in the problem of high-intensity laser-plasma interactions. In particular we show how an artificial neural network can "read" features imprinted in laser-plasma harmonic spectra that are currently analysed with spectral interferometry.

Damping of sound waves by bulk viscosity in reacting gases

The very long standing problem of sound waves propagation in fluids is reexamined. In particular, from the analysis of the wave damping in reacting gases following the work of Einsten \citep{Ein}, it is found that the damping due to the chemical reactions occurs nonetheless the second (bulk) viscosity introduced by Landau \& Lifshitz \citep{LL86} is zero. The simple but important case of a recombining Hydrogen plasma is examined.

Self-energy effects and energy band theory for warm dense matter

The energy band structures caused by self-energy shifting that results in bound energy levels broadening and merging in warm dense aluminum and beryllium are observed. An energy band theory for warm dense matter (WDM) is proposed and a new code based on the energy band theory is developed to improve the traditional density functional method. Massive data of the equation of state and transport coefficients for WDM in medium and low Z have been simulated. The transition from fully degenerate to partially degenerate (related to WDM) and finally to non-degenerate state is investigated using the Lorenz number varying with the degeneracy parameter, and the lower and upper parameter boundaries for WDM are achieved. It is shown that the pressure ionization results in the Wiedemann-Franz law no longer available for WDM.

On violent instability of a plasma-vacuum interface for an incompressible plasma flow and a nonzero displacement current in vacuum

In the classical statement of the plasma-vacuum interface problem in ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) one neglects the displacement current in the vacuum region that gives the div-curl system of pre-Maxwell dynamics for the vacuum magnetic field. For understanding the influence of the vacuum electric field on the evolution of a plasma-vacuum interface we do not neglect the displacement current and consider the full Maxwell equations in vacuum. For the case of an incompressible plasma flow, by constructing an Hadamard-type ill-posedness example for the constant coefficients linearized problem we find a necessary and sufficient condition for the violent instability of a planar plasma-vacuum interface. In particular, we prove that as soon as the unperturbed plasma and vacuum magnetic fields are collinear, any nonzero unperturbed vacuum electric field makes the planar interface violently unstable. This shows the necessity of the corresponding non-collinearity condition for well-posedness and a crucial role of the vacuum electric field in the evolution of a plasma-vacuum interface.

Collisionless absorption of short laser pulses in a deuterium cluster: dependence of redshift of resonance absorption peak on laser polarization, intensity and wavelength

We study collisionless absorption of short laser pulses of various intensity, wavelength ($λ$) and polarization in a deuterium cluster using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. For a given laser energy and a pulse duration $\approx$ 5-fs (fwhm), it is found that maximum laser absorption does not happen at the welknown static Mie-resonance or linear resonance (LR) wavelength of $\lambdaM\approx 263$~nm (for deuterium cluster) irrespective of linear polarization (LP) and circular polarization (CP) state of laser. As the laser intensity increases, the absorption peak is gradually red-shifted to a higher $λ$ in the marginally over-dense regime of $λ\!\! \approx \!\!(1\!\!-\!\!1.5)\lambdaM$ from the expected static~$\lambdaM$ owing to gradual outer ionization and cluster expansion; and above an intensity the resonance absorption peak disappears (sometimes followed by {\em even} a growth of absorption) when outer ionization saturates at 100\% for both LP and CP. This disappearance of the resonance absorption peak should not be misinterpreted as the negligible (or no) role of Mie-resonance. In fact, in this marginally over-dense band of $λ\!\! \approx \!\!(1\!\!-\!\!1.5)\lambdaM$, some electrons undergo dynamic Mie-resonance (dynamic LR) and others anharmonic resonance when they are freed. It is also found that before the absorption peak, laser absorption due to LP and CP lasers are almost equally efficient (CP case being inappreciably higher than LP) for all intensities and $λ$. However, after the absorption peak, at lower intensities, absorption due to LP inappreciably dominates absorption due to CP with increasing~$λ$ which gradually reverses at higher intensities. MD results are also supported by a naive rigid sphere model of cluster.

Spin-to-Orbital Conversion of Angular Momentum in Harmonic Generation Driven by Intense Circularly Polarized Beam

A new physical mechanism to achieve spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion based on the interaction of an intense circularly polarized (CP) laser beam with a plane foil is presented and studied for the first time. It has been verified by both simulation and theoretical analysis that vortex harmonics carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are generated after a relativistic CP laser beam, even a Gaussian beam, impinges normally on a plane foil. The generation of this vortex harmonics is attributed to the vortex oscillation of the plasma surface driven harmonically by the vortex longitudinal electric field of the CP beam. During the process of harmonic generation, the spin angular momenta of fundamental-frequency photons are converted to OAM of harmonic photon because of the conservation of total angular momentum. In addition, if an initially vortex beam or a spiral phase plate is used, the OAM of harmonic photon can be more tunable and controllable.

Particle physics applications of the AWAKE acceleration scheme

The AWAKE experiment had a very successful Run 1 (2016-8), demonstrating proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration for the first time, through the observation of the modulation of a long proton bunch into micro-bunches and the acceleration of electrons up to 2 GeV in 10 m of plasma. The aims of AWAKE Run 2 (2021-4) are to have high-charge bunches of electrons accelerated to high energy, about 10 GeV, maintaining beam quality through the plasma and showing that the process is scalable. The AWAKE scheme is therefore a promising method to accelerate electrons to high energy over short distances and so develop a useable technology for particle physics experiments. Using proton bunches from the SPS, the acceleration of electron bunches up to about 50 GeV should be possible. Using the LHC proton bunches to drive wakefields could lead to multi-TeV electron bunches, e.g. with 3 TeV acceleration achieved in 4 km of plasma. This document outlines some of the applications of the AWAKE scheme to particle physics and shows that the AWAKE technology could lead to unique facilities and experiments that would otherwise not be possible. In particular, experiments are proposed to search for dark photons, measure strong field QED and investigate new physics in electron-proton collisions. The community is also invited to consider applications for electron beams up to the TeV scale.

Electron Density Measurement with Hairpin Resonator in Low Pressure Plasma

Hairpin probes measure electron density in plasmas where other techniques are unsuitable. Previous hairpins were constructed as a quarter-wave resonant structure typically made from a folded piece of wire. The present work conducts the hairpin measurement in high electron density, up to approximately 10^12 / cm3, corresponding to a plasma frequency of about 9 GHz. A series of four probes is described, together with an easily reproducible implementation of the associated microwave electronics using commercial off the shelf components that are inexpensive compared to the network analyzer that is typically required. Measuring higher densities requires increasing the resonant frequency, but we were unable to accurately fabricate the required quarter wavelength structure on the scale of 4 mm. Toward this end we explore operating a larger quarter-wavelength structure at its 3d harmonic (3/4 resonator). Correction coefficients are described for both the plasma sheath effect and the wire coating. Measurements are taken in Argon at pressures below 20 mTorr. Results are compared with Langmuir probe measurements.

Evaluation of Kinetic Ballooning Instability in the Near-Earth Magnetotail

Ballooning instabilities are widely believed to be a possible triggering mechanism for the onset of substorm and current disruption initiation in the near-Earth magnetotail. Yet the stability of the kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) in a global and realistic magnetotail configuration has not been well examined. In this paper, the growth rate of the KBM is calculated from analytical theory for the two-dimensional Voigt equilibrium within the framework of kinetic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. The growth rate of the KBM is found to be strongly dependent on the field line stiffening factor $S$, which depends on the trapped electron dynamics, the finite ion gyroradius, and the magnetic drift motion of charged particles. Furthermore, calculations show that the KBM is unstable in a finite intermediate range of equatorial $β_{eq}$ values and the growth rate dependence on $β_{eq}$ is enhanced for larger $ρ_i$. The KBM stability is further analyzed in a broad range of $k_y$ for different values of ion Larmor radius $ρ_i$ and gradient ratio $η_j \equiv d\ln(T_j)/d\ln(n_j)$, where $T_j$ is the particle temperature and $n_j$ is the particle density. The KBM is found to be unstable for sufficiently high values of $k_y$, where the growth rate first increases to a maximum value and then decreases due to kinetic effects. The $k_y$ at the maximum growth rate decreases exponentially with $ρ_i$. The current sheet thinning is found to enhance the KBM growth rate and the unstable $β_{eq}$ regime in the near-Earth magnetotail.

On the Sobolev stability threshold of 3D Couette flow in a homogeneous magnetic field

We study the stability of the Couette flow $(y,0,0)^T$ in the 3D incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations for a conducting fluid on $\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T} $ in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field $α(σ, 0, 1)$. We consider the inviscid, ideal conductor limit $\textbf{Re}^{-1}$, $\textbf{R}_m^{-1} \ll 1$ and prove that for strong and suitably oriented background fields the Couette flow is asymptotically stable to perturbations small in the Sobolev space $H^N$. More precisely, we show that if $α$ and $N$ are sufficiently large, $σ\in \mathbb{R} \setminus \mathbb{Q}$ satisfies a generic Diophantine condition, and the initial perturbations $u_{in}$ and $b_{in}$ to the Couette flow and magnetic field, respectively, satisfy $\|(u_{in},b_{in})\|_{H^N} = ε\ll \textbf{Re}^{-1}$, then the resulting solution to the 3D MHD equations is global in time and the perturbation $(u(t,x+yt,y,z),b(t,x+yt,y,z))$ remains $\mathcal{O}(\textbf{Re}^{-1})$ in $H^{N'}$ for some $N'(σ) < N$. Our proof establishes enhanced dissipation estimates describing the decay of the $x$-dependent modes on the timescale $t \sim \textbf{Re}^{1/3}$, as well as inviscid damping of the velocity and magnetic field that agrees with the optimal decay rate for the linearized system. In the Navier-Stokes case, high regularity control on the perturbation in a coordinate system adapted to the mixing of the Couette flow is known only under the stronger assumption $ε\ll \textbf{Re}^{-3/2}$. The improvement in the MHD setting is possible because the magnetic field induces time oscillations that partially suppress the lift-up effect, which is the primary transient growth mechanism for the Navier-Stokes equations linearized around the Couette flow.

Collision of Ionization Waves in Long Discharge Tubes

This research focuses on interaction of ionization waves (IW) generated in long discharge tubes (1 m length and 1.5 cm in diameter) filled with neon or argon under pressure about 1 Torr and, in particular, on simplest case of such interference which is collision of the opposite directed IW of positive polarity. The waves were triggered from two electrodes of the tube by simultaneous application of the same high voltage pulse and propagated toward the tube center until their collision. Space and time stability of the collisions was achieved via decreasing time delay of the initial breakdowns which trigger IW by employment of both memory effect and photo-desorption of wall surface electrons. Significant memory effect occurred for the pulse repetition rate over 100Hz. Multiple IW transition from the electrode forms specific one-electrode discharge; as a result the problem of IW collision was transformed into the observation of two opposite one-electrode discharges interaction. Patterns of IW interfering were registered via deviation of their kinematic characteristics (x-t diagrams) from ones for non-collided wave. This method shows that two ionization waves travel toward each other with decreasing speeds and subsequent degradation of the emission. An area near the tube center where IWs emission was not detected was considered as the IW suppression zone. The zone width depends on voltage amplitude, gas type and pressure.

Self-consistent kinetic equations for $e^-e^+γ$-plasma generated from vacuum by strong electric field

We present a self-consistent kinetic description of an electron-positron-photon ($e^-e^+γ$) plasma generated from vacuum in a focal spot of counterpropagating laser pulses. We rely on a model of purely time-dependent external electric field, but properly take into account quantum radiation from plasma, as well as the semiclassical internal (plasma) field. To achieve this goal we derive a system of coupled kinetic equations for the electron, positron, and photon plasma species supplemented with Maxwell equation for the internal electric field. Quantum radiation is included systematically by taking into account the pair creation/annihilation and radiation channels of the BBGKY chain in quasiparticle representation, which we truncate at second order of perturbation theory. An important application of our results would be consistent consideration of photon emission and cascade production beyond the locally constant field approximation, including the depletion of the driving laser field and a possible scenario of cascade saturation due to thermalization.

Kinetic fluid moments closure for a magnetized plasma with collisions

A novel method aimed at a kinetic moments closure for a magnetized plasma with arbitrary collisionality is proposed. The intended first application is to a tokamak edge and scrape-off-layer plasma. The velocity distribution function for each species is expanded in 8 Gaussian Radial Basis Functions (GRBFs) which are essentially shifted Maxwellians at eight representative 3D-velocity points of drift. The vector of 8 fluid moments (for particle density, 3 particle fluxes, total energy density, and 3 energy fluxes) has an 8x8 analytic linear matrix relation to the vector of 8 GRBF density weights in 3D real space. The 8 fluid moments with sources for each species are advanced in time while the 8 GRBF weighs are determined from the 8x8 inverse matrix. The two closure moments (for the stress tensor and the energy weighted stress tensor) are linearly determined from the GRBF weights. Most importantly the velocity moments of the nonlinear Coulomb Fokker-Planck collision operator [Rosenbluth et al, Phys. Rev 107, 1957] are evaluated from the GRBF weights. Generalization from 8 to 12, 16, 20 .., in an energy weighted moment hierarchy is straightforward. The electric field follows from a generalized vorticity (quasi-neutral current continuity) equation. A strong drift ordering approximation can be applied to eliminate any spuriously unstable high frequency cyclotron motions. A novel weak drift ordering two-time step scheme avoids the vorticity equation by following ion cyclotron motion in time to get the electric field with ion gyroaveraging. Inclusion of low-beta magnetic perturbations is straightforward.

Subwavelength periodic plasma structures formed during the laser-pulse-induced breakdown within the transparent dielectric

The spatiotemporal evolution of the field and plasma in the optical breakdown induced in the volume of transparent dielectric (fused silica) by the focused fs laser pulse is studied under condition of the so-called plasma-resonance-induced ionization instability that results in the deep small-scale periodic modulation of the breakdown plasma parameters in the direction of the laser polarization. In the framework of the model used, the optical electric field was calculated with allowance for the effects influencing both its long-scale structure (the beam focusing accounted for in the given-ray-tube approximation, phase and group delays, and back reflection) and the small-scale one (quasi-static enhancement in the plasma resonance regions). The plasma density evolution is described by the rate equation taking into account the photoionization, avalanche ionization, and ambipolar diffusion. Based on the fulfilled numerical calculations, we have described the main types of the breakdown wave originating in the focal region and have found the laser pulse intensity range where the instability evolving from very small seed perturbations leads to the formation of the contrast subwavelength periodic structure containing the number of the narrow zones with overcritical plasma density and enhanced energy deposition. The latter allows us to consider this structure as underlying the nanograting formation observed experimentally in the fused silica irradiated by series of repeated fs pulses.

Coherence constraints on physical parameters at bright radio sources and FRB emission mechanism

We discuss physical constrains that observations of high brightness temperature coherent radio emission, with brightness temperatures as high as $T_b \sim 10^{35}$ K, impose on the plasma parameters at relativistically moving astrophysical sources. High brightness temperatures imply a minimal plasma energy density at the source. Additional important constraints come from the fact that resonantly emitting particles lose most of their energy to non-resonant inverse Compton and synchrotron processes. We also interpret recent observations of high-to-low frequency drifting features in the spectra of repeating FRBs as analogues of type-III Solar radio bursts produced by reconnection plasma beams within magnetospheres of highly magnetized neutron stars.

Recovery of parameters of fast nonlocal heat transport in magnetic fusion plasmas: testing a model of waves with high internal reflections

Our analysis of the model [J. Phys.: Conf. Ser. 941 (2017) 012008] elaborated for interpreting the initial stage of the fast nonlocal transport events, which exhibit immediate response, in the heat diffusion time scale, of the spatial profile of electron temperature to its local perturbation, shows that the nonlocal transport by electromagnetic (EM) waves needs too high reflectivity of vacuum vessel walls to describe the experimental data. Here we try another model, which assumes high internal reflections and is compatible with the "wild cable" transport of TEM waves along magnetically-bound skeletal nanostructures. An inverse problem for recovery of the source and sink of waves, and internal reflectivity, is formulated and solved. Preliminary results of analyzing the data from tokamaks JET and TFTR, and stellarator LHD are presented.
