Forecasts for CMB μ- and i-type spectral distortion constraints on the primordial power spectrum on scales 8 < k < 10^4 Mpc^-1 with the future Pixie-like experiments

Silk damping at redshifts 1.5 x 10^4 < z < 2 x 10^6 erases CMB anisotropies on scales corresponding to the comoving wavenumbers 8 < k < 10^4 Mpc^-1 (10^5 < \ell < 10^8). This dissipated energy is gained by the CMB monopole, creating distortions from a blackbody in the CMB spectrum of the μ-type and the i-type. We study, using Fisher matrices, the constraints we can get from measurements of these spectral distortions on the primordial power spectrum from future experiments such as Pixie, and how these constraints change as we change the frequency resolution and the sensitivity of the experiment. We show that the additional information in the shape of the $i$-type distortions, in combination with the μ-type distortions, allows us to break the degeneracy between the amplitude and the spectral index of the power spectrum on these scales and leads to much tighter constraints. We quantify the information contained in both the μ-type distortions and the i-type distortions taking into account the partial degeneracy with the y-type distortions and the temperature of the blackbody part of the CMB. We also calculate the constraints possible on the primordial power spectrum when the spectral distortion information is combined with the CMB anisotropies measured by the WMAP, SPT, ACT and Planck experiments.

Heavy gravitino in hybrid inflation

It is known that supersymmetric hybrid inflation model may require severe tunings on the initial condition for large gravitino mass of order 100 - 1000 TeV due to the constant term in the superpotential. We propose a modified hybrid inflation model, where the constant term is suppressed during inflation and generated after inflation by replacing a constant term with dynamical field. In this modified model, successful inflation consistent with large gravitino mass takes place without severe tunings on the initial condition. Constraint from cosmic strings is also relaxed.

Bulk viscosity coefficients due to phonons in superfluid neutron stars

We calculate the three bulk viscosity coefficients as arising from the collisions among phonons in superfluid neutron stars. We use effective field theory techniques to extract the allowed phonon collisional processes, written as a function of the equation of state of the system. The solution of the dynamical evolution of the phonon number density allows us to calculate the bulk viscosity coefficients as function of the phonon collisional rate and the phonon dispersion law, which depends on the neutron pairing gap. Our method of computation is rather general, and could be used for different superfluid systems, provided they share the same underlying symmetries. We find that the behavior with temperature of the bulk viscosity coefficients is dominated by the contributions coming from the collinear regime of the $2\leftrightarrow3$ phonon processes. For typical star radial pulsation frequencies of $ω\sim 10^{4} s^{-1}$, we obtain that the bulk viscosity coefficients at densities $n \gtrsim 4n_0$ are within 10% from its static value for $T \lesssim 10^9 K$ and for the case of strong neutron superfluidity in the core with a maximum value of the $^3P_2$ gap above 1 MeV, while, otherwise, the static solution is not a valid approximation to the bulk viscosity coefficients. Compared to previous results from Urca and modified Urca reactions, we conclude that at $T\sim 10^9$K phonon collisions give the leading contribution to the bulk viscosities in the core of the neutron stars, except for $n \sim 2n_0$ when the opening of the Urca processes takes place.

On the Minimum Dark Matter Mass Testable by Neutrinos from the Sun

We discuss a limitation on extracting bounds on the scattering cross section of dark matter with nucleons, using neutrinos from the Sun. If the dark matter particle is sufficiently light (less than about 4 GeV), the effect of evaporation is not negligible and the capture process goes in equilibrium with the evaporation. In this regime, the flux of solar neutrinos of dark matter origin becomes independent of the scattering cross section and therefore no constraint can be placed on it. We find the minimum values of dark matter masses for which the scattering cross section on nucleons can be probed using neutrinos from the Sun. We also provide simple and accurate fitting functions for all the relevant processes of GeV-scale dark matter in the Sun.

Visible sector inflation and the right thermal history in light of Planck data

Inflation creates perturbations for the large scale structures in the universe, but it also dilutes everything. Therefore it is pertinent that the end of inflation must explain how to excite the Standard Model {\it dof} along with the dark matter. In this paper we will briefly discuss the role of visible sector inflaton candidates which are embedded within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and discuss their merit on how well they match the current data from the Planck. Since the inflaton carries the Standard Model charges their decay naturally produces all the relevant {\it dof} with no {\it dark/hidden sector radiation} and no isocurvature fluctuations. We will first discuss a single supersymmetric flat direction model of inflation and demonstrate what parameter space is allowed by the Planck and the LHC. We will also consider where the perturbations are created by another light field which decays after inflation, known as a {\it curvaton}. The late decay of the curvaton can create observable non-Gaussianity. In the end we will discuss the role of a {\it spectator} field whose origin may not lie within the visible sector physics, but its sheer presence during inflation can still create all the perturbations responsible for the large scale structures including possible non-Gaussianity, while the inflaton is embedded within the visible sector which creates all the relevant matter including dark matter, but no dark radiation.

Dark Matter and Strong Electroweak Phase Transition in a Radiative Neutrino Mass Model

We consider an extension of the standard model (SM) with charged singlet scalars and right handed (RH) neutrinos all at the electroweak scale. In this model, the neutrino masses are generated at three loops, which provide an explanation for their smallness, and the lightest RH neutrino, $N_{1}$, is a dark matter candidate. We find that for three generations of RH neutrinos, the model can be consistent with the neutrino oscillation data, lepton flavor violating processes, $N_{1}$ can have a relic density in agreement with the recent Planck data, and the electroweak phase transition can be strongly first order. We also show that the charged scalars may enhance the branching ratio $h-->YY$, where as $h-->YZ$ get can get few percent suppression. We also discuss the phenomenological implications of the RH neutrinos at the collider.

Low & High scale MSSM inflation, gravitational waves and constraints from Planck

In this paper we will analyze generic predictions of an inflection-point model of inflation with Hubble-induced corrections and study them in light of the Planck data. Typically inflection-point models of inflation can be embedded within Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) where inflation can occur below the Planck scale. The flexibility of the potential allows us to match the observed amplitude of the TT-power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation with low and high multipoles, spectral tilt, and virtually mild running of the spectral tilt, which can put a bound on an upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r \leq 0.12$. Since the inflaton within MSSM carries the Standard Model charges, therefore it is the minimal model of inflation beyond the Standard Model which can reheat the universe with the right thermal degrees of freedom without any dark-radiation.

Optimal constraint on g_NL from CMB

An optimal method to constrain the non-linearity parameter g_NL of the local-type non-Gaussianity from CMB data is proposed. Our optimal estimator for g_NL is separable and can be efficiently computed in real space. Combining the exact filtering of CMB maps with the full covariance matrix, our method allows us to extract cosmological information from observed data as much as possible and obtain a tighter constraint on g_NL than previous studies. Applying our method to the WMAP 9-year data, we obtain the constraint g_NL = (-3.3 +- 2.2) 10^5, which is a few times tighter than previous ones. We also make a forecast for PLANCK data by using the Fisher matrix analysis.

Probing Decoupling in Dark Sectors with the Cosmic Microwave Background

The acoustic peaks in the angular power spectrum of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropies play an important role as a probe of the nature of new relativistic particles contributing to the radiation density in the early universe, parametrized by $ΔN_{eff}$. The amplitude and phase of the acoustic oscillations provide information about whether the extra species are free-streaming particles, like neutrinos, or tightly-coupled, like the photons, during eras probed by the CMB. On the other hand, some extensions of the Standard Model produce new relativistic particles that decouple from their own non-gravitational interactions after neutrinos, but prior to photons. We study the signature of new relativistic species that decouple during this intermediate epoch. We argue that the decoupling species will cause a scale-dependent change in the amplitude and phase shift of the acoustic oscillations, different from the usual constant shifts on small scales. For intermediate decoupling times, the phase and amplitude shifts depend not only on $ΔN_{eff}$ but the redshift $z_{dec,X}$ at which the new species decoupled. For $ΔN_{eff} >0.334$, a Stage IV CMB experiment could determine $N_{eff}$ at the percent level and $z_{dec,X}$ at the $\sim 10\%$ level. For smaller values, $ΔN_{eff}\sim 0.1$, constraints on $z_{dec,X}$ weaken but remain $\sim 20-50\%$ for $z_{dec,X} \sim \mathcal{O}(10^3-10^4)$. As an application, we study the contributions to $ΔN_{eff}$ and determine the $z_{dec,X}$ values for simple implementations of the so-called $N$naturalness model.

Measuring $D^0-\bar D^0$ mixing in $D^0(\bar D^0)\to f_0(980) K^{*}$ and more

We investigate the $D^0-\bar D^0$ mixing through the doubly Cabibbo suppressed (DCS) channel $D^0\to f_0(980)K^{*0}$ and its charge conjugate channel, in which the $K^{*0}$ meson is reconstructed in both $K^+π^-$ and $K_Sπ^0$ final state. Although the decay $D^0\to f_0(980)K^{*}$ has a small branching ratio, the final state mesons are relatively easy to identify. The $f_0(980)$ meson can be replaced by $π^+π^-$ in which $π^+π^-$ form an $S$-wave state, or a longitudinally polarized vector meson $ρ^0,ω$. All mixing parameters, including the mass difference and decay width difference, can be extracted by studying the time-dependent decay width of these channels. We show that the method is valid in all regions for mixing parameters and it does not depend on the strong phase difference.

Intrinsic periodicity: the forgotten lesson of quantum mechanics

Wave-particle duality, together with the concept of elementary particles, was introduced by de Broglie in terms of intrinsically "periodic phenomena". However, after nearly 90 years, the physical origin of such undulatory mechanics remains unrevealed. We propose a natural realization of the de Broglie "periodic phenomenon" in terms of harmonic vibrational modes associated to space-time periodicities. In this way we find that, similarly to a vibrating string or a particle in a box, the intrinsic recurrence imposed as a constraint to elementary particles represents a fully consistent quantization condition. The resulting classical cyclic dynamics formally match ordinary relativistic Quantum Mechanics in both the canonical and Feynman formulations. Interactions are introduced in a geometrodynamical way, similarly to general relativity, by simply considering that variations of kinematical state can be equivalently described in terms of modulations of space-time recurrences, as known from undulatory mechanics. We present this novel quantization prescription from a historical prospective.

A Model for Large theta13 Constructed using the Eigenvectors of the S4 Rotation Matrices

A procedure for using the eigenvectors of the elements of the representations of a discrete group in model building is introduced and is used to construct a model that produces a large reactor mixing angle, sin^2(theta13)=2/3 sin^2(pi/16), in agreement with recent neutrino oscillation observations. The model fully constrains the neutrino mass ratios and predicts normal hierarchy with the light neutrino mass, m1~25 meV. Motivated by the model, a new mixing ansatz is postulated which predicts all the mixing angles within 1sigma errors.

Thermal field theory to all orders in gradient expansion

We present a new perturbative formulation of non-equilibrium thermal field theory, based upon non-homogeneous free propagators and time-dependent vertices. The resulting time-dependent diagrammatic perturbation series are free of pinch singularities without the need for quasi-particle approximation or effective resummation of finite widths. After arriving at a physically meaningful definition of particle number densities, we derive master time evolution equations for statistical distribution functions, which are valid to all orders in perturbation theory and all orders in a gradient expansion. For a scalar model, we make a loopwise truncation of these evolution equations, whilst still capturing fast transient behaviour, which is found to be dominated by energy-violating processes, leading to non-Markovian evolution of memory effects.

Addition theorems for spin spherical harmonics. I Preliminaries

We develop a systematic approach to deriving addition theorems for, and some other bilocal sums of, spin spherical harmonics. In this first part we establish some necessary technical results. We discuss the factorization of orbital and spin degrees of freedom in certain products of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, and obtain general explicit results for the matrix elements in configuration space of tensor products of arbitrary rank of the position and angular-momentum operators. These results are the basis of the addition theorems for spin spherical harmonics obtained in part II.

Addition theorems for spin spherical harmonics. II Results

Based on the results of part I, we obtain the general form of the addition theorem for spin spherical harmonics and give explicit results in the cases involving one spin-$s'$ and one spin-$s$ spherical harmonics with $s',s=1/2$, 1, 3/2, and $|s'-s|=0$, 1. We obtain also a fully general addition theorem for one scalar and one tensor spherical harmonic of arbitrary rank. A variety of bilocal sums of ordinary and spin spherical harmonics are given in explicit form, including a general explicit expression for bilocal spherical harmonics.

Fermi Limit on the Neutrino Flux from Gamma-ray Bursts

If gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) produce high energy cosmic rays, neutrinos are expected to be generated in GRBs due to photo-pion productions. However we stress that the same process also generates electromagnetic (EM) emission induced by the production of secondary electrons and photons, and that the EM emission is expected to be correlated to the neutrino flux. Using the Fermi/LAT observational results on gamma-ray flux from GRBs, the GRB neutrino emission is limited to be below ~20 GeV/m^2 per GRB event on average, which is independent of the unknown GRB proton luminosity. This neutrino limit suggests that the full IceCube needs stacking more than 130 GRBs in order to detect one GRB muon neutrino.

A novel approach in the WIMP quest: Cross-Correlation of Gamma-Ray Anisotropies and Cosmic Shear

Both cosmic shear and cosmological gamma-ray emission stem from the presence of Dark Matter (DM) in the Universe: DM structures are responsible for the bending of light in the weak lensing regime and those same objects can emit gamma-rays, either because they host astrophysical sources (active galactic nuclei or star-forming galaxies) or directly by DM annihilations (or decays, depending on the properties of the DM particle). Such gamma-rays should therefore exhibit strong correlation with the cosmic shear signal. In this Letter, we compute the cross-correlation angular power spectrum of cosmic shear and gamma-rays produced by the annihilation/decay of Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) DM, as well as from astrophysical sources. We show that this observable provides novel information on the composition of the Extra-galactic Gamma-ray Background (EGB), since the amplitude and shape of the cross-correlation signal strongly depends on which class of source is responsible for the gamma-ray emission. If the DM contribution to the EGB is significant (at least in a definite energy range), although compatible with current observational bounds, its strong correlation with the cosmic shear makes such signal potentially detectable by combining Fermi-LAT data with forthcoming galaxy surveys, like Dark Energy Survey and Euclid. At the same time, the same signal would demonstrate that the weak lensing observables are indeed due to particle DM matter and not to possible modifications of General Relativity.

Transparency of the Universe to gamma rays

Using the most recent observational data concerning the Extragalactic Background Light and the Radio Background, for a source at a redshift z_s < 3 we compute the energy E_0 of an observed gamma-ray photon in the range 10 GeV < E_0 < 10^13 GeV such that the resulting optical depth tau_gamma(E_0,z_s) takes the values 1, 2, 3 and 4.6, corresponding to an observed flux dimming of e^-1 = 0.37, e^-2 = 0.14, e^-3 = 0.05 and e^-4.6 = 0.01, respectively. Below a source distance D = 8 kpc we find that tau_gamma(E_0,DH_0/c) < 1 for any value of E_0. In the limiting case of a local Universe (z_s = 0) we compare our result with the one derived in 1997 by Coppi and Aharonian. The present achievement is of paramount relevance for the planned ground-based detectors like CTA, HAWC and HiSCORE.
