A logarithmic Hardy inequality

We prove a new inequality which improves on the classical Hardy inequality in the sense that a nonlinear integral quantity with super-quadratic growth, which is computed with respect to an inverse square weight, is controlled by the energy. This inequality differs from standard logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the sense that the measure is neither Lebesgue's measure nor a probability measure. All terms are scale invariant. After an Emden-Fowler transformation, the inequality can be rewritten as an optimal inequality of logarithmic Sobolev type on the cylinder. Explicit expressions of the sharp constant, as well as minimizers, are established in the radial case. However, when no symmetry is imposed, the sharp constants are not achieved among radial functions, in some range of the parameters.

Ballistic Motion in One-Dimensional Quasi-Periodic Discrete Schr\"odinger Equation

For the solution $q(t)=(q_n(t))_{n\in\mathbb Z}$ to one-dimensional discrete Schr\"odinger equation $${\rm i}\dot{q}_n=-(q_{n+1}+q_{n-1})+ V(\theta+n\omega) q_n, \quad n\in\mathbb Z,$$ with $\omega\in\mathbb R^d$ Diophantine, and $V$ a small real-analytic function on $\mathbb T^d$, we consider the growth rate of the diffusion norm $\|q(t)\|_{D}:=\left(\sum_{n}n^2|q_n(t)|^2\right)^{\frac12}$ for any non-zero $q(0)$ with $\|q(0)\|_{D}<\infty$. We prove that $\|q(t)\|_{D}$ grows {\it linearly} with the time $t$ for any $\theta\in\mathbb T^d$ if $V$ is sufficiently small.

Convergence of the solutions of the discounted equation

We consider a continuous coercive Hamiltonian $H$ on the cotangent bundle of the compact connected manifold $M$ which is convex in the momentum. If $u_\lambda:M\to\mathbb R$ is the viscosity solution of the discounted equation $$ \lambda u_\lambda(x)+H(x,d_x u_\lambda)=c(H), $$ where $c(H)$ is the critical value, we prove that $u_\lambda$ converges uniformly, as $\lambda\to 0$, to a specific solution $u_0:M\to\mathbb R$ of the critical equation $$ H(x,d_x u)=c(H). $$ We characterize $u_0$ in terms of Peierls barrier and projected Mather measures.

A regularity method for lower bounds on the Lyapunov exponent for stochastic differential equations

We put forward a new method for obtaining quantitative lower bounds on the top Lyapunov exponent of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). Our method combines (i) an (apparently new) identity connecting the top Lyapunov exponent to a Fisher information-like functional of the stationary density of the Markov process tracking tangent directions with (ii) a novel, quantitative version of H\"ormander's hypoelliptic regularity theory in an $L^1$ framework which estimates this (degenerate) Fisher information from below by a $W^{s,1}_{\mathrm{loc}}$ Sobolev norm. This method is applicable to a wide range of systems beyond the reach of currently existing mathematically rigorous methods. As an initial application, we prove the positivity of the top Lyapunov exponent for a class of weakly-dissipative, weakly forced SDE; in this paper we prove that this class includes the Lorenz 96 model in any dimension, provided the additive stochastic driving is applied to any consecutive pair of modes.

Semi-classical states for the Choquard equation

We study the nonlocal equation $$-\varepsilon^2 \Delta u_\varepsilon + V u_\varepsilon = \varepsilon^{-\alpha} \bigl(I_\alpha \ast \lvert u_\varepsilon\rvert^p\bigr) \lvert u_\varepsilon \rvert^{p - 2} u_\varepsilon\quad\text{in \(\mathbf{R}^N\)}, $$ where $N \ge 1$, $\alpha \in (0, N)$, $I_\alpha (x) = A_\alpha/\lvert x \rvert^{N - \alpha}$ is the Riesz potential and $\varepsilon > 0$ is a small parameter. We show that if the external potential $V \in C (\mathbb{R}^N; [0, \infty))$ has a local minimum and $p \in [2, (N + \alpha)/(N - 2)_+)$ then for all small $\varepsilon > 0$ the problem has a family of solutions concentrating to the local minimum of $V$ provided that: either $p > 1 + \max (\alpha, \frac{\alpha + 2}{2})/(N - 2)_+$, or $p > 2$ and $\liminf_{\lvert x\rvert \to \infty} V (x) \lvert x \rvert^2 > 0$, or $p = 2$ and $\inf_{x \in \mathbb{R}^N} V (x) (1 + \lvert x \rvert^{N - \alpha}) > 0$. Our assumptions on the decay of $V$ and admissible range of $p\ge 2$ are optimal. The proof uses variational methods and a novel nonlocal penalization technique that we develop in this work.

On the determination of Lagrange Multipliers for a weighted LASSO problem using geometric and convex analysis techniques

Compressed Sensing (CS) encompasses a broad array of theoretical and applied techniques for recovering signals, given partial knowledge of their coefficients. Its applications span various fields, including mathematics, physics, engineering, and several medical sciences. Motivated by our interest in the mathematics behind Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and CS, we employ convex analysis techniques to analytically determine equivalents of Lagrange multipliers for optimization problems with inequality constraints, specifically a weighted LASSO with voxel-wise weighting. We investigate this problem under assumptions on the fidelity term $\Vert{Ax-b}\Vert_2^2$, either concerning the sign of its gradient or orthogonality-like conditions of its matrix. To be more precise, we either require the sign of each coordinate of $2(Ax-b)^TA$ to be fixed within a rectangular neighborhood of the origin, with the side lengths of the rectangle dependent on the constraints, or we assume $A^TA$ to be diagonal. The objective of this work is to explore the relationship between Lagrange multipliers and the constraints of a weighted variant of LASSO, specifically in the mentioned cases where this relationship can be computed explicitly. As they scale the regularization terms of the weighted LASSO, Lagrange multipliers serve as tuning parameters for the weighted LASSO, prompting the question of their potential effective use as tuning parameters in applications like MR image reconstruction and denoising. This work represents an initial step in this direction.

A Milstein scheme for SPDEs

This article studies an infinite dimensional analog of Milstein's scheme for finite dimensional stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs). The Milstein scheme is known to be impressively efficient for SODEs which fulfill a certain commutativity type condition. This article introduces the infinite dimensional analog of this commutativity type condition and observes that a certain class of semilinear stochastic partial differential equation (SPDEs) with multiplicative trace class noise naturally fulfills the resulting infinite dimensional commutativity condition. In particular, a suitable infinite dimensional analog of Milstein's algorithm can be simulated efficiently for such SPDEs and requires less computational operations and random variables than previously considered algorithms for simulating such SPDEs. The analysis is supported by numerical results for a stochastic heat equation and stochastic reaction diffusion equations showing signifficant computational savings.

Uniqueness and nondegeneracy of positive solutions to a class of Kirchhoff equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$

In this paper, we establish a type of uniqueness and nondegeneracy results for positive solutions to the following nonlocal Kirchhoff equations \begin{eqnarray*} -\left(a+b\int_{\mathbb{R}^{3}}|\nabla u|^{2}\text{d} x\right)\Delta u+u=|u|^{p-1}u & & \text{in }\mathbb{R}^{3}, \end{eqnarray*} where $a,b$ are positive constants and $1<p<5$. Before this paper, it seems that there have no this type of results even on positive ground states solutions to Kirchhoff type equations, much less on general positive solutions. To overcome the difficulty brought by the nonlocality, some new observation on Kirchhoff equations is found, and some related theories on classical Schr\"odinger equations are applied.

A Class of History-Dependent Systems of Evolution Inclusions with Applications

This paper is devoted to studying a system of coupled nonlinear first order history-dependent evolution inclusions in the framework of evolution triples of spaces. The multivalued terms are of the Clarke subgradient or of the convex subdifferential form. Using a surjectivity result for multivalued maps and a fixed point argument for a history-dependent operator, we prove that the system has a unique solution. We conclude with two examples of an evolutionary differential variational-hemivariational inequality and of a dynamic frictional contact problem in mechanics, which illustrate the abstract results.

On orbital stability of ground states for finite crystals in fermionic Schr\"odinger--Poisson model

We consider the Schr\"odinger--Poisson--Newton equations for finite crystals under periodic boundary conditions with one ion per cell of a lattice. The electron field is described by the $N$-particle Schr\"odinger equation with antisymmetric wave function. Our main results are i) the global dynamics with moving ions, and ii) the orbital stability of periodic ground state under a novel Jellium and Wiener-type conditions on the ion charge density. Under Jellium condition both ionic and electronic charge densities of the ground state are uniform.

Global Strong Solutions of the Boltzmann Equation without Angular Cut-off

We prove the existence and exponential decay of global in time strong solutions to the Boltzmann equation without any angular cut-off, i.e., for long-range interactions. We consider perturbations of the Maxwellian equilibrium states and include the physical cross-sections arising from an inverse-power intermolecular potential $r^{-(p-1)}$ with $p>3$, and more generally, the full range of angular singularities $s=\nu/2 \in(0,1)$. These appear to be the first unique global solutions to this fundamentally important model, which grants a basic example where a range of geometric fractional derivatives occur in a physical model of the natural world. Our methods provide a new understanding of the effects of grazing collisions in the Boltzmann theory.

The aggregation equation with power-law kernels: ill-posedness, mass concentration and similarity solutions

We study the multidimensional aggregation equation $u_t+\Div(uv)=0$, $v=-\nabla K*u$ with initial data in $\cP_2(\bR^d)\cap L_{p}(\bR^d)$. We prove that with biological relevant potential $K(x)=|x|$, the equation is ill-posed in the critical Lebesgue space $L_{d/(d-1)}(\bR^d)$ in the sense that there exists initial data in $\cP_2(\bR^d)\cap L_{d/(d-1)}(\bR^d)$ such that the unique measure-valued solution leaves $L_{d/(d-1)}(\bR^d)$ immediately. We also extend this result to more general power-law kernels $K(x)=|x|^\alpha$, $0<\alpha<2$ for $p=p_s:=d/(d+\alpha-2)$, and prove a conjecture in Bertozzi, Laurent and Rosado [5] about instantaneous mass concentration for initial data in $\cP_2(\bR^d)\cap L_{p}(\bR^d)$ with $p<p_s$. Finally, we classify all the "first kind" radially symmetric similarity solutions in dimension greater than two.

On well-posedness of Ericksen-Leslie's paraboloc-hyperbolic liquid crystal model

We establish the following well-posedness results on Ericksen-Leslie's parabolic-hyperbolic liquid crystal model: 1, if the dissipation coefficients \beta = \mu_4 - 4 \mu_6 > 0, and the size of the initial energy E^{in} is small enough, then the life span of the solution is at least -O(\ln E^{in}); 2, for the special case that the coefficients \mu_1 = \mu_2 = \mu_3 = \mu_5 = \mu_6 = 0, for which the model is the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the wave map from \mathbb{R}^n to \mathbb{S}^2, the same existence result holds but without the smallness restriction on the size of the initial data; 3, with further constraints on the coefficients, namely \alpha = \mu_4 - 4 \mu_6 - \tfrac{ (|\lambda_1| - 7 \lambda_2)^2 }{\eta} - \tfrac{ 2 ( 7 |\lambda_1| - 2\lambda_2 )^2 }{ |\lambda_1| } > 0 and \mu_2 < \mu_3, the global classical solution with small initial data can be established. A relation between the Lagrangian multiplier and the geometric constraint |d|=1 plays a key role in the proof.

A new physical-space approach to decay for the wave equation with applications to black hole spacetimes

We present a new general method for proving global decay of energy through a suitable spacetime foliation, as well as pointwise decay, starting from an integrated local energy decay estimate. The method is quite robust, requiring only physical space techniques, and circumvents use of multipliers or commutators with weights growing in t. In particular, the method applies to a wide class of perturbations of Minkowski space as well as to Schwarzschild and Kerr black hole exteriors.
