Left-Right Symmetry Model with Two Bidoublets and One Doublet Higgs Field for Electroweak Interaction

We use the left-right symmetry model based on SU(2)_{L}xSU(2)_{R}xU(1)_{B-L} gauge group with two bidoublets and one doublet Higgs field for electroweak interaction. The lepton fields are represented as a doublet of SU(2)for both left and right fields. By using the pattern of symmetry breaking emerges as the minimum of the Higgs potential for a range of parameters, we show that the domination of the V-A over V+A interactions is natural at low energy. The symmetry breaking is the responsible mechanism for the up-down lepton doublet mass difference

An Experiment to Search for Light Dark Matter in Low-Energy ep Scattering

Anomalous production of low-energy photons from the galactic center have fueled speculations on the nature and properties of dark matter particles. In particular, it has been proposed that light scalars may be responsible for the bulk of the matter density of the universe, and that they couple to ordinary matter through a light spin-1 boson. If this is the case, then such particles may be produced in the quasi-elastic low-energy scattering of electrons off protons. We present a proposal for an experiment to search for this process and assess its viability.

Multiple scattering and energy loss in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic eA scattering

We calculate the multiple scattering effect on single hadron production in semi-inclusive lepton-nucleus deeply inelastic scattering. We show that the quantum interference of multiple scattering amplitudes leads to suppression in hadron productions. At the leading power in medium length, the suppression can be approximately expressed in terms of a shift in $z$ of the fragmentation function $D(z)$, and could be therefore interpreted as the collisional energy loss. We compare our calculation with existing experimental data. We also discuss the effect of quark mass on the suppression. Our approach can be extended to other observables in hadronic collisions.

On the new HERMES data for the electroproduction on nuclei

We analyze recent data on the electroproduction of hadrons on nuclei using the Lund model for electroproduction on nucleons and a simple geometrical model for the absorption effects. We show that the model seems to overestimate the A-dependence of the absorption effects, although it described the earlier data of the same HERMES experiment reasonably well. We trace the origin of this discrepancy to the surprising difference between the data for nitrogen and neon.

Nuclear Suppression of Jets and R_AA at the LHC

The nuclear modification factor R_AA for charged hadron production at the LHC is predicted from jet energy loss induced by gluon bremsstrahlung. The Arnold, Moore, and Yaffe formalism is used, together with an ideal hydrodynamical model.

Higgs Particle Mass in Cosmology

A version of the Standard Model is considered, where the electroweak symmetry breaking is provided by cosmological initial data given for the zeroth Fourier harmonic of the Higgs field $<ϕ>$. The initial data symmetry breaking mechanism removes the Higgs field contribution to the vacuum energy density, possible creation of monopoles, and tachion behavior at high energies, if one imposes an ``inertial'' condition on the Higgs potential $\textsf{V}_{\rm Higgs}(<ϕ>)=0$. The requirement of zero radiative corrections to this {\em inertial} condition coincides with the limiting point of the vacuum stability in the Standard Model. The latter together with the direct experimental limit gives the prediction for the mass of the Higgs boson to be in the range $114 < m_h \lsim 134$ GeV.

Charmonium singlets, open charm and exotic hadrons

Caution is suggested on the comparison of the spin-singlet charmonium P-state with the centre of gravity of triplet states, when the mass splitting is of the order of a few MeV. The physics of new hidden-charm states X and Y is briefly reviewed. Perspectives for producing double-charm baryons and double-charm exotic mesons are discussed.

Recent Issues in Leptogenesis

Baryogenesis via leptogenesis provides an appealing mechanism to explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Recent refinements in the understanding of the dynamics of leptogenesis include detailed studies of the effects of lepton flavors and of the role possibly played by the lepton asymmetries generated in the decays of the heavier singlet neutrinos $N_{2,3}$. A review of these recent developments in the theory of leptogenesis is presented.

Differences in $dE/dX$ for $μ+$ and $μ-$ and its Effect on the Underground Charge Ratio

Theoretical calculations predict a small fractional difference in energy loss for $μ^+$ and $μ^-$ of the order of $0.15 %$ at high energies. This is predominantly due to a $z^3$ term in an extended ionization $dE/dX$ relation, in analogy to the Barkas effect at low energies around the Bethe-Bloch maximum. The atmospheric muon energy spectrum is steeply falling off with approximately $E^{-3.7}$ and thus the small difference in $dE/dX$ between $μ^+$ and $μ^-$ at high energies results in an amplified charge asymmetry of about $0.6 %$ many thousand meters water equivalent deep underground.

Simulation of jet quenching and high-pT particle production at RHIC and LHC

The model to simulate rescattering and partonic energy loss in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is presented. The full heavy ion event is obtained as a superposition of a soft hydro-type state and hard multi-jets. This model is capable of reproducing main features of the jet quenching pattern at RHIC, and is applied to probe jet quenching in various novel channels at LHC.

Q-Ball Condensation

Q-balls arise in particle theories with U(1) global symmetry. The coupling of the corresponding scalar field to fermions leads to Q-ball evaporation. In this paper we consider the oposite problem, the case where a Q-ball absorbs particles to grow. In particular we shall use the exact quantum mechanical description of fermions interacting with a Q-ball to solve the problem. Results show that Q-ball condensation can be another mechanism for Q-ball creation.

GeV Seesaw, Accidentally Small Neutrino Masses, and Higgs Decays to Neutrinos

If the Standard Model particle content is extended by gauge singlet fermions (right-handed neutrinos), active neutrinos generically acquire (Majorana) masses, in agreement with our current understanding of the lepton sector. If the right-handed neutrino masses are of the same order as the electroweak symmetry breaking scale, it is usually expected that these will not mediate any experimentally observable effects. Here, I explore the fact that this is not necessarily the case. If neutrino masses are "accidentally small", active-sterile mixing angles can, according to current experimental bounds, be as large as several percent. If this is the case, I argue that the dominant decay mode of light (M_H less than 130 GeV) Higgs bosons could be into an active and a sterile neutrino. The sterile neutrino decays promptly into a charge lepton and an on- or off-shell W-boson, so that the dominant Higgs boson decay mode is H to leptons + jets + missing transverse energy.

Exclusive rho0 electroproduction

Exclusive rho0 electroproduction at HERA has been studied with the ZEUS detector, using 120 pb{-1} integrated luminosity, in the kinematic range of photon virtuality of 2 < Q2 < 160 GeV2, and gamma* p center-of-mass energy of 32 < W < 180 GeV. The results include the Q2 and W dependence of the gamma* p --> rho0 p cross section and the distribution of the squared-four-momentum transfer to the proton, t. Also included is the ratio of longitudinal to transverse gamma* p cross section as a function of Q2, W and t. Finally, the effective Pomeron trajectory was extracted. The results are compared to various theoretical predictions, none of which are able to reproduce all the features of the data.

Probing CP violation in neutrino oscillations with neutrino telescopes

Measurements of flavor ratios of astrophysical neutrino fluxes are sensitive to the two yet unknown mixing parameters $θ_{13}$ and $δ$ through the combination $\sinθ_{13}\cosδ$. We extend previous studies by considering the possibility that neutrino fluxes from more than a single type of sources will be measured. We point out that, if reactor experiments establish a lower bound on $θ_{13}$, then neutrino telescopes might establish an upper bound on $|\cosδ|$ that is smaller than one, and by that prove that CP is violated in neutrino oscillations. Such a measurement requires several favorable ingredients to occur: (i) $θ_{13}$ is not far below the present upper bound; (ii) The uncertainties in $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{23}$ are reduced by a factor of about two; (iii) Neutrino fluxes from muon-damped sources are identified, and their flavor ratios measured with accuracy of order 10% or better. For the last condition to be achieved with the planned km^3 detectors, the neutrino flux should be close to the Waxman-Bahcall bound. It motivates neutrino telescopes that are effectively about 10 times larger than IceCube for energies of O(100 TeV), even at the expense of a higher energy threshold.

Direct CP Violation in B Decays

We discuss several aspects of direct CP asymmetries in B decays, which are very useful in spite of hadronic uncertainties in asymmetry calculations. 1) Asymmetries in decays to $D^{(*)}K^{(*)}$, $π^+π^-, ρ^+ρ^-$, providing precision tests for the CKM phase $γ$. 2) Null tests in $B^+\to J/ψK^+, π^+π^0$, where a nonzero asymmetry provides evidence for New Physics. 3) Isospin and broken flavor SU(3) relations among CP asymmetries in $B\to Kπ, ππ$ predicting $A_{CP}(B^0\to K^0π^0)$ and $A_{CP}(B^0\to π^0π^0)$. 4) The significance of $A_{CP}(B^0\to K^+π^-)\ne A_{CP}(B^+\to K^+π^0)$. 5) A potentially stringent constraint on $γ$ from $A_{CP}(B^+\to K^+π^0)$ and $R_c\equiv 2Γ(B^+\to K^+π^0)/Γ(B^+\to K^0π^+)$. 6) The role of direct CP asymmetries in $b\to s\bar qq$ decays for studying the origin of potential New Physics.
