Quantum interference effects in an ensemble of $^{229}$Th nuclei interacting with coherent light

As a unique feature, the $^{229}$Th nucleus has an isomeric transition in the vacuum ultraviolet that can be accessed by optical lasers. The interference effects occurring in the interaction between coherent optical light and an ensemble of $^{229}$Th nuclei are investigated theoretically. We consider the scenario of nuclei doped in vacuum ultraviolet-vacuum ultraviolet transparent crystals and take into account the effect of different doping sites and therefore different lattice fields that broaden the nuclear transition width. This effect is shown to come in interplay with interference effects due to the hyperfine splitting of the ground and isomeric nuclear states. We investigate possible experimentally available situations involving two-, three- and four-level schemes of quadrupole sublevels of the ground and isomeric nuclear states coupling to one or two coherent fields. Specific configurations which offer clear signatures of the isomer excitation advantageous for the more precise experimental determination of the transition energy are identified. Furthermore, it is shown that population trapping into the isomeric state can be achieved. This paves the way for further nuclear quantum optics applications with $^{229}$Th such as nuclear coherent control.

Extraction of Axial Mass and Strangeness Values from the MiniBooNE Neutral Current Elastic Cross Section Measurement

Results of the analysis of the MiniBooNE experiment data for the neutral current elastic neutrino scattering off the $CH_{2}$ target with the NuWro Monte Carlo generator are presented. Inclusion in the NuWro the two body current contribution leads to the axial mass value $M_A = 1.10^{+0.13}_{-0.15}$ GeV consistent with the older evaluations based on the neutrino-deuteron scattering data. The strange quark contribution to the nucleon spin is estimated with the value $g_A^s = -0.4^{+0.5}_{-0.3}$.

Microscopic study of $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion

We perform a study of $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O fusion at above and below the interaction barrier energies using three-dimensional time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations at above barrier energies and density-constrained TDHF calculations for the entire energy range. We discuss the variations of the experimental data at above the barrier energies. Calculations reasonably reproduce the observed energy-dependent broad oscillations in the fusion excitation functions. These oscillations result from overcoming $L$-dependent fusion barriers. The role of the coupling to low-lying octupole states is also discussed.

Effect of the Wood-Saxon nuclear distribution on the chiral magnetic field in Relativistic Heavy-ion Collisions

The formation of the QCD vacuum with nonzero winding number $Q_w$ during relativistic heavy-ion collisions breaks the parity and charge-parity symmetry. A new kind of field configuration can separate charge in the presence of a background magnetic field-the "chiral magnetic effect". The strong magnetic field and the QCD vacuum can both completely be produced in the noncentral nuclear-nuclear collision. Basing on the theory of Kharzeev,Mclerran and Warringa, we use the Wood-Saxon nucleon distribution to replace that of the uniform distribution to improve the magnetic field calculation method of the noncentral collision. The chiral magnetic field distribution at LHC(Large Hadron Collider) energy regions are predicted. We also consider the contributions to the magnetic field of the total charge given by the produced quarks.

Testing viscous and anisotropic hydrodynamics in an exactly solvable case

We exactly solve the one-dimensional boost-invariant Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation for arbitrary shear viscosity. The results are compared with the predictions of viscous and anisotropic hydrodynamics. Studying different non-equilibrium cases and comparing the exact kinetic-theory results to the second-order viscous hydrodynamics results we find that recent formulations of second-order viscous hydrodynamics agree better with the exact solution than the standard Israel-Stewart approach. Additionally, we find that, given the appropriate connection between the kinetic and anisotropic hydrodynamics relaxation times, anisotropic hydrodynamics provides a very good approximation to the exact relaxation time approximation solution.

Effects of the Detection Efficiency on Multiplicity Distributions

In this paper we investigate how a finite detection efficiency affects three popular multiplicity distributions, namely the Poisson, the Binomial and the Negative Binomial distributions. We found that a multiplicity-independent detection efficiency does not change the characteristic of a distribution, while a multiplicity-dependent detection efficiency does. We layout a procedure to study the deviation of moments and their derivative quantities from the baseline distribution due to a multiplicity-dependent detection efficiency.

Event-plane correlators

Correlators between event planes of different harmonics in relativistic heavy-ion collisions have the potential to provide crucial information on the initial state of the matter formed in these collisions. We present a new procedure for analyzing such correlators, which is less demanding in terms of detector acceptance than the one used recently by the ATLAS collaboration to measure various two-plane and three-plane correlators in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC. It can also be used unambiguously for quantitative comparison between theory and data. We use this procedure to carry out realistic simulations within the transport model AMPT. Our theoretical results are in excellent agreement with the ATLAS data, in contrast with previous hydrodynamic calculations which only achieved qualitative agreement. We present predictions for new correlators, in particular four-plane correlators, which can easily be analyzed with our new method.

Magnetic contribution to dilepton production in heavy-ion collisions

We calculate a novel "magnetic contribution" to the dilepton spectrum in heavy-ion collisions arising from interaction of relativistic quarks with intense magnetic field. Synchrotron radiation by quarks, which can be approximated by the equivalent photon flux, is followed by dilepton decay of photons in intense magnetic field. We argue that "magnetic contribution" dominates the dilepton spectrum at low lepton energies, whereas a conventional photon dilepton decay dominates at higher lepton energies.

Time and space dependence of electromagnetic field in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Exact analytical solution for the space-time evolution of electromagnetic field in electrically conducting nuclear matter produced in heavy-ion collisions is discussed. It is argued that the parameter that controls the strength of the matter effect on the field evolution is $σγb$, where $σ$ is electrical conductivity, $γ$ is the Lorentz boost-factor and $b$ is the characteristic transverse size of the matter. When this parameter is of the order one or larger, which is the case at RHIC and LHC, space-time dependence of electromagnetic field is completely different form that in vacuum.

Quarkyonic Percolation and deconfinement at finite density and number of colors

We examine the interplay between the percolation and the deconfinement phase transitions of Yang-Mills matter at finite temperature, quark chemical potential $μ_Q$ and number of colors $N_c$. We find that, whereas the critical $N_c$ for percolation goes down with density, the critical $N_c$ for confinement generally goes up. Because of this, Yang-Mills matter falls into two qualitatively different regimes: the "low-$N_c$ limit", where percolation does not occur because matter deconfines before it percolates, and the high-$N_c$ limit, where there are three distinct phases characterizing Yang-Mills matter at finite temperature and density: confined, deconfined and confined but percolating matter. The latter can be thought of as the recently conjectured "quarkyonic phase". We attempt to estimate the critical $N_c$, to see if the percolating phase can occur in our world. We find that, while percolation will not occur at normal nuclear density as in the large-$N_c$ limit, a sliver of the phase diagram in $N_c$, energy density and baryonic density where percolation occurs while confinement persists is possible. We conclude by speculating on the phenomenological properties of such percolating "quarkyonic" matter, suggest avenues to study it quantitatively, and look for it in experiment.

Higher Twist in Electroproduction: Flavor Non-Singlet QCD Evolution

We present results for the one loop anomalous dimension matrix of flavor non-singlet twist-4 operators of lowest spin that contribute to the leading moment of the $F_2$ structure function in deep inelastic electron-nucleon scattering. We analyze the flavor structure of the anomalous dimension matrix and decompose the leading moment of $F_2$ into separate flavor channels. In addition to building on previous work with higher-twist operators, these results can provide a benchmark for future work that generalizes to include the higher moments as well. We include non-perturbative input from the lattice and phenomenological estimates of the twist-4 matrix elements and estimate the twist-4 contributions to the leading moment of $F_2$. The results suggest that the overall twist-4 contribution may be suppressed due to either cancellations among the twist-4 terms or inherently small twist-4 matrix elements.

Signature of strange dibaryons in kaon- and photon-induced reactions

We examine how the signature of the strange dibaryon resonances shows up in scattering amplitudes and observables of the three-body $\bar{K}NN$-$πY N (Y=Σ, Λ)$ system on the physical real energy axis. The so-called point method is applied to handle logarithmic singularities that appear in solving the Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas equations for the real scattering energies. By taking two different kinds of models for the two-body $\bar{K}N$-$πΣ$ subsystem, both of which reproduce the available data equally well but give quite a different resonance-pole structure for $Λ(1405)$, we also investigate whether the strange-dibaryon production reactions can be used for disentangling the nature of $Λ(1405)$.

Production of the H dibaryon via the (K^-,K^+) reaction on a $^{12}$C target

We study the production of the stable six-quark $H$ dibaryon via the $(K^-,K^+)$ reaction on a $^{12}$C target within a covariant effective Lagrangian model. The calculations are performed within a factorization approximation, in which the full production amplitude is written as a product of the amplitudes for the $K^- + p \to K^+ + Ξ^-$ and $Ξ^- + p \to H$ processes. The $K^+Ξ^-$ production vertex is described by excitation, propagation and decay of $Λ$ and $Σ$ resonance states in the initial collision of a $K^-$ meson with a target proton in the incident channel. The parameters of the resonance vertices are taken to be the same as those determined previously by describing the available data on total and differential cross sections for the $p(K^-, K^+)Ξ^-$ reaction within a similar model. The $Ξ^- + p \to H$ fusion process is treated within a quark model where the $H$ dibaryon is considered as a stable particle. For the $K^+$ meson angle fixed at 0$^o$, the $H$ production cross-section is found to be about 2.9 $μb/sr$ for $H$ mass just below the $ΛΛ$ threshold at a $K^-$ beam momentum of 1.67 GeV/c. This is an order of magnitude larger than the value for this quantity reported earlier in calculations performed on a $^3$He target using a different model for the cascade hyperon production. We have also calculated the beam momentum dependence of the $H$ production cross section and the energy spectrum of the emitted $K^+$ meson.

Neutron matter from chiral effective field theory interactions

The neutron-matter equation of state constrains the properties of many physical systems over a wide density range and can be studied systematically using chiral effective field theory (EFT). In chiral EFT, all many-body forces among neutrons are predicted to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO). We present details and additional results of the first complete N3LO calculation of the neutron-matter energy, which includes the subleading three-nucleon as well as the leading four-nucleon forces, and provides theoretical uncertainties. In addition, we discuss the impact of our results for astrophysics: for the supernova equation of state, the symmetry energy and its density derivative, and for the structure of neutron stars. Finally, we give a first estimate for the size of the N3LO many-body contributions to the energy of symmetric nuclear matter, which shows that their inclusion will be important in nuclear structure calculations.

Elastic pbar-d scattering and total pbar-d cross sections reexamined

We update our recent analysis of pbar-d scattering, performed within the Glauber theory including the single- and double pbar-N scattering mechanisms. Specifically, now we consider also Nbar-N amplitudes from a new partial-wave analysis of pbar-p scattering data. Predictions for differential cross sections and the spin observables A_y^d, A_y^pbar, A_xx, A_yy are presented for antiproton beam energies between 50 and 300 MeV. Total polarized cross sections are calculated utilizing the optical theorem. The efficiency of the polarization buildup for antiprotons in a storage ring is investigated.

Baryon-antibaryon production asymmetry in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Experimental data at RHIC and SPS energies suggest a systematic correlation between yield ratio $\bar{p}/p$ and $K^{-}/K^{+}$, which reveal some universality of hadron production in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We propose an explanation based on the quark combination mechanism in which the production asymmetry between baryons and antibaryons is focused on especially. We start from the basic ideas of quark combination to carry out a general analysis of the properties of the global production of baryons and mesons and obtain the yields of baryons, antibaryons and mesons as functions of the number of constituent quarks and antiquarks just before hadronization. In particular, we study effects of quark-antiquark asymmetry on the ratio of (anti-)baryons to mesons and that of antibaryons to baryons. We use these formula to well explain the data of $\bar{p}/p$ and $K^{-}/K^{+}$ at different of collision energies and rapidities and suggest further measurements at moderate RHIC energies in the mid-forward rapidity regions to make the decisive test of this universality.

Toroidal Quadrupole Form Factor of the Deuteron

We calculate the toroidal quadrupole moment and form factor of the deuteron, which violate time-reversal symmetry but conserve parity, at leading order in two-flavor chiral effective field theory with perturbative pion exchange. We take into account time-reversal and parity violation due to the QCD vacuum angle combined with parity violation resulting from the weak interaction in the Standard Model. We also consider time-reversal and parity violation that at the quark-gluon level results from effective dimension-six operators originating from physics beyond the Standard Model.

Shape evolution of giant resonances in Nd and Sm isotopes

Giant multipole resonances in Nd and Sm isotopes are studied by employing the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation on the basis of the Skyrme energy-density-functional method. Deformation effects on giant resonances are investigated in these isotopes which manifest a typical nuclear shape change from spherical to prolate shapes. The peak energy, the broadening, and the deformation splitting of the isoscalar giant monopole (ISGMR) and quadrupole (ISGQR) resonances agree well with measurements. The magnitude of the peak splitting and the fraction of the energy-weighted strength in the lower peak of the ISGMR reflect the nuclear deformation. The experimental data on ISGMR, ISGDR, and ISGQR are consistent with the nuclear-matter incompressibility $K \simeq 210-230$ MeV and the effective mass $m^*_0/m \simeq 0.8-0.9$. However, the high-energy octupole resonance (HEOR) in $^{144}$Sm seems to indicates a smaller effective mass, $m^*_0/m \simeq 0.7-0.8$. A further precise measurement of HEOR is desired to determine the effective mass.
