Hamiltonian Nature of Monopole Dynamics

Classical electromagnetism with magnetic monopoles is not a Hamiltonian field theory because the Jacobi identity for the Poisson bracket fails. The Jacobi identity is recovered only if all of the species have the same ratio of electric to magnetic charge or if an electron and a monopole can never collide. Without the Jacobi identity, there are no local canonical coordinates or Lagrangian action principle. To build a quantum theory of magnetic monopoles, we either must explain why the positions of electrons and monopoles can never coincide or we must resort to new quantization techniques.

Micro-dynamics of neutral flow induced dusty plasma flow

We present a detailed experimental study of gas flow induced motion of dust particles in a DC glow discharge plasma. The characteristics of the dust dynamics are investigated as a function of the differential gas flow rate, the background neutral pressure, the dust particle size as well as the neutral species of the gas. The experiments have been carried out in the table top Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device in which a plasma is created between a disk shaped anode and a grounded cathode in a $Π$-shaped pyrex glass tube. The asymptotic steady state flow velocity of the injected micron sized dust particles is found to increase with an increase of neutral flow velocity and decrease with an increase in the background pressure. Furthermore, this velocity is seen to be independent of the size of the dust particles but decreases with an increase in the mass of the background gas. A simple theoretical model, based on estimates of the various forces acting on the dust particles, is used to elucidate the role of neutrals in the flow dynamics of the dust particles. Our experiments thus provide a detailed microscopic understanding of some of the past phenomenological observations of dust flows in the DPEx device and can prove useful in future experimental implementations of dust flow experiments.

Exact equilibrium state for pair plasmas near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole

A pair plasma in hidrostatic equilibrium near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole is an exact state. In this work, we show that an exact non--hidrostatic equilibrium state can be sustained for a pair plasma, in which its constituents are moving near the horizon of the black hole. This equilibrium state solution is not due to a vortical formalism, but by the balance of forces in the plasma. This new equilibrium state has a pressure for the hydrostatic equilibrium, although the plasma moves. The equilibrium is achieved by the generation of a magnetic field that emerges by the interplay between the plasma dynamics and the gravitational field, having no flat spacetime analogue. No electric fields are needed to sustain the equilibria. The magnetic field shows an exponential decaying behavior, governed by a function that depends on the properties of the pair plasma and the black, and that plays the role of a characteristc length of the dynamics of the magnetic field.

Electron sheath evolution controlled by a magnetic field in modified hollow cathode glow discharge

The electron sheath formation in a DC magnetised plasma of modified hollow cathode source is studied. The discharge consists of two plane parallel cathodes and a small cubical anode placed off axis at the center. The argon plasma is produced and the properties of the plasma in response to the sheath formation near the anode are studied using electrical and optical diagnostics. In particular, the effect of pressure, magnetic field on discharge parameters such as discharge current, plasma potential, plasma density and electron temperature is studied. The discharge showed an onset of anode glow at a critical applied magnetic field indicating the formation of electron sheath and a double layer. The discharge current initially decreases; however it starts to rise again as the anode spot appears on the anode. The critical magnetic field at which anode glow formation takes place is dependent upon operating pressure and discharge voltage. The transition from ion sheath to electron sheath is investigated in detail by Langmuir probe and spectroscopy diagnostics. The plasma potential near the anode decreases during the transition from ion sheath to electron sheath. The plasma potential locks to the ionization potential of argon gas when anode spot is completely formed. A systematic study showed that during the transition, the electron temperature increases and plasma density decreases in the bulk plasma. The spectroscopy of the discharge showed presence of strong atomic and ionic lines of argon. The intensity of these spectral lines showed a dip during the transition between two sheaths. After the formation of the anode spot, oscillations of the order of 5-20 kHz are observed in the discharge current and floating potential due to the enhanced ionisation and excitation processes in the electron sheath.

On the optimal focusing of solitons and breathers in long wave models

Conditions of optimal (synchronized) collisions of any number of solitons and breathers are studied within the framework of the Gardner equation with positive cubic nonlinearity, which in the limits of small and large amplitudes tends to other long-wave models, the classic and the modified Korteweg -- de Vries equations. The local solution for an isolated soliton or breather within the Gardner equation is obtained. The wave amplitude in the focal point is calculated exactly. It exhibits a linear superposition of partial amplitudes of the solitons and breathers. The crucial role of the choice of proper soliton polarities and breather phases on the cumulative wave amplitude in the focal point is demonstrated. Solitons are most synchronized when they have alternating polarities. The straightforward link to the problem of synchronization of envelope solitons and breathers in the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation is discussed (then breathers correspond to envelope solitons propagating above a condensate).

Theory of Multipole Solutions to the Sourceless Grad-Shafranov Equation in Plasma Physics

The rules to write out any one of the linearly independent functions belonging to the infinite set of those in polynomial form that satisfy the sourceless Grad-Shafranov equation as stated in the toroidal-polar coordinate system are established. It is found that a polynomial solution even in the poloidal angle is given by the product of an integral power of the radial coordinate variable by a complete polynomial of equal degree in this same variable with angular-dependent coefficient functions that are linear combinations of a finite number of Chebyshev polynomials in the cosine of the poloidal angle, the numerical coefficients of these being expressed in terms of the binomial numbers of Pascal's arithmetic triangle. Tables of the ten polynomial solutions of the lowest degrees are provided in variables of the toroidal-polar and of the cylindrical coordinate systems.

QED Plasma at Finite Temperature up to Two Loops

We study the vacuum polarization tensor of QED (quantum electrodynamics) at high temperatures up to the two loop levels and its effect on the electromagnetic properties of a medium. One loop corrections to QED coupling vanish at low temperatures (T$\leq 10^{10}K$), but they play an important role at high temperature ( T$\geq 10^{10}$ K) to study the behavior of QED medium at these temperatures. At low temperatures ( $T \leq m_e$)higher order loops give a tiny correction due to the coupling of radiation with matter and an overlap of hot photon loop with cold fermion loop contributes to this effect. These higher loop contributions does not affect the convergence of perturbative series, and renormalizability of QED is guaranteed at temperatures around neutrino decoupling. We use the renormalization scheme of QED at finite temperature in real-time formalism to study the dynamically generated mass of photon indicating the plasmon production in such a medium. Temperature dependence of this QED plasma parameters is discussed. We explicitly show that this behavior of a thermal medium exists upto temperatures of a few MeV only. We compare the first order and second order effects upto the 4MeV temperature and demonstrate that the higher order contributions are smaller than the lower order contributions proving the renormalizability of the theory. The lowest order contributions are sufficiently smaller than the original value as well.

Relativistic light synthesis of femtosecond sawtooth pulses

Formation of femtosecond sawtooth pulses by high harmonic generation from relativistic oscillating mirrors is studied. For oblique incidence of $p$-polarized laser pulse, one can efficiently control the intensity of the first few harmonics by modifying the plasma density gradient at the plasma-vacuum interface. With appropriate choice of the laser amplitude and incidence angle, the generated harmonics can form a millijoule femtosecond sawtooth pulse. The scheme does not rely on phase manipulation and/or pulse synchronization as in the state-of-art methods. It is also shown that such a sawtooth pulse can boost the generation of ultrashort terahertz pulses in laser-plasma interaction by one order of magnitude, as compared with that from the conventional two-color laser pulse.

First Integrated Implosion Experiment of Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum at the SGIII Laser Facility

The first integrated implosion experiment of three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) was accomplished at the SGIII laser facility. 24 laser beams of the SGIII laser facility were carefully chosen and quasi-symmetrically injected into the TACH, in which a highly symmetric radiation filed was generated with a peak radiation temperature of ~190eV. Driven by the radiation field, the neutron yield of a deuterium gas filled capsule reached ~1e9, and the corresponding yield over clean (YOC) was ~40% for a convergence ratio (Cr) of ~17. The X-ray self-emission image of imploded capsule cores was nearly round, and the backscatter fraction of laser beams was less than 1.25%. This experiment preliminarily demonstrated the major performance of TACH, such as the robustness of symmetry, and a laser plasma instability (LPI) behavior similar to that of the outer ring of traditional cylindrical hohlraum.

Solution to the Grad-Shafranov Boundary Value Problem for a Thermonuclear Plasma contained in a Toroidal Vase With a Conducting Wall under the Assumption of Constant Sources to the Equilibrium in Flux Space

A method is proposed to solve the Grad-Shafranov partial differential equation for the poloidal flux function associated with the equilibrium of a plasma magnetically confined in an axisymmetric torus under the assumption that the sources to the equilibrium (the gradient of the plasma pressure and the gradient of half the squared toroidal field function in flux space) are constant, and subjected to the condition of constant value of the poloidal flux at the toroidal boundary. The solution to the equation is written as the sum of the particular solution and a combination of N multipole solutions of the lowest orders in the variables of the toroidal-polar coordinate system having the pole at the centre of the torus cross section.

I-BEAT: New ultrasonic method for single bunch measurement of ion energy distribution

The shape of a wave carries all information about the spatial and temporal structure of its source, given that the medium and its properties are known. Most modern imaging methods seek to utilize this nature of waves originating from Huygens' principle. We discuss the retrieval of the complete kinetic energy distribution from the acoustic trace that is recorded when a short ion bunch deposits its energy in water. This novel method, which we refer to as Ion-Bunch Energy Acoustic Tracing (I-BEAT), is a generalization of the ionoacoustic approach. Featuring compactness, simple operation, indestructibility and high dynamic ranges in energy and intensity, I-BEAT is a promising approach to meet the needs of petawatt-class laser-based ion accelerators. With its capability of completely monitoring a single, focused proton bunch with prompt readout it, is expected to have particular impact for experiments and applications using ultrashort ion bunches in high flux regimes. We demonstrate its functionality using it with two laser-driven ion sources for quantitative determination of the kinetic energy distribution of single, focused proton bunches.

Positive Ion Impediment by short-circuiting effect in a magnetized plasma column

The radial characteristic of a partially magnetized plasma column created by a hot cathode filament is presented. It is found that in the absence of magnetic field, plasma potential and density varies similarly according to Boltzmann distribution. However as the magnetic field increases, a clear divergence is seen as plasma density becomes more pronounced in the centre whereas a corresponding minima is observed in plasma potential; thus limiting the radial diffusion of positive ions towards the grounded sidewalls. A phenomenological model based on short-circuiting effect is developed, which fairly explains this contrasting behaviour.

First Investigation on the Radiation Field of the Gas-Filled Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum

A novel ignition hohlraum named three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) is designed for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. TACH is a kind of 6 laser entrance holes (LEHs) hohlraum, which is orthogonally jointed of three cylindrical hohlraums. The first experiment on the radiation field of TACH was performed on Shenguang III laser facility. 24 laser beams were elected and injected into 6 LEHs quasi-symmetrically. Total laser energy was about 59 kJ, and the peak radiation temperature reached about 192 eV. Radiation temperature and pinhole images in gas-filled hohlraum are largely identical but with minor differences with those in vacuum hohlraum. All laser energy can be totally delivered into hohlraum in 3 ns duration even without filled gas in the hohlraum of 1.4 mm diameter. Plasma filling cannot be obviously suppressed even with 0.5 atm pressure gas in the small hohlraum. Backscattering fractions of vacuum hohlraum and gas-filled hohlraum are both lower than 2%. Experimental study of this new kind of hohlraum can provide guidance for future target design and implosion experiment.

Temperature and lifetime measurements in the SSX wind tunnel

We describe electron temperature measurements in the SSX MHD wind tunnel using two different methods. First, we estimate $T_e$ along a chord by measuring the ratio of the $C_{III}~97.7~nm$ to $C_{IV}~155~nm$ line intensities using a vacuum ultraviolet monochrometer. Second, we record a biasing scan to a double Langmuir probe to obtain a local measurement of $T_e$. The aim of these studies is to increase the Taylor state lifetime, primarily by increasing the electron temperature. Also, a model is proposed to predict magnetic lifetime of relaxed states and is found of predict the lifetime satisfactorily. Furthermore, we find that proton cooling can be explained by equilibration with the electrons.

Gyrokinetic simulation of ITG turbulence with toroidal geometry including the magnetic axis by using field-aligned coordinates

Abstract Simulation domain in field-aligned coordinates of the electrostatic gyrokinetic nonlinear turbulence global code, NLT, is extended to include the magnetic axis. The artificial boundary near the magnetic axis is replaced by the natural boundary. The singularity at the magnetic axis in Vlasov solver is treated by considering the spatial relation of fixed grid points in field-aligned coordinates. A new Poisson's equation solver is developed, the coefficient matrix of algebraic equations is derived by using Gauss's theorem. Nonlinear relaxation test of the ITG turbulence with adiabatic electrons is performed. The gyrocenter conservation is much improved by including the magnetic axis in the simulation domain. The zonal field and the radial distribution of the perturbed electrostatic potential are different from previous results without the magnetic axis.

Temporally Resolved Intensity Contouring (TRIC) for characterization of the absolute spatio-temporal intensity distribution of a relativistic, femtosecond laser pulse

Today's high-power laser systems are capable of reaching photon intensities up to $10^{22}$ W/cm^2, generating plasmas when interacting with material. The high intensity and ultrashort laser pulse duration (fs) make direct observation of plasma dynamics a challenging task. In the field of laser-plasma physics and especially for the acceleration of ions, the spatio-temporal intensity distribution is one of the most critical aspects. We describe a novel method based on a single-shot (i.e. single laser pulse) chirped probing scheme, taking nine sequential frames at framerates up to THz. This technique, to which we refer as temporally resolved intensity contouring (TRIC) enables single-shot measurement of laser-plasma dynamics. Using TRIC, we demonstrate the reconstruction of the complete spatio-temporal intensity distribution of a high-power laser pulse in the focal plane at full pulse energy with sub picosecond resolution.

Scaling Laws of Ion Acceleration in Ultrathin Foils Driven by Laser Radiation Pressure

Scaling laws of ion acceleration in ultrathin foils driven by radiation pressure of intense laser pulses are investigated by theoretical analysis and two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Considering the instabilities are inevitable during laser plasma interaction, the maximum energy of ions should have two contributions: the bulk acceleration driven by radiation pressure and the sheath acceleration in the moving foil reference induced by hot electrons. A theoretical model is proposed to quantitatively explain the results that the cutoff energy and energy spread are larger than the predictions of "light sail" model, observed in simulations and experiments for a large range of laser and target parameters. Scaling laws derived from this model and supported by the simulation results are verified by the previous experiments.
