Study of light-cone distribution amplitudes for p-wave heavy mesons

In this paper, a study of light-cone distribution amplitudes for p-wave heavy mesons is presented in both general and heavy quark frameworks. Within the light-front approach, the leading twist light-cone distribution amplitudes, ϕ_M(u) and their relevant decay constants of heavy scalar, axial-vector and tensor mesons, f_M, are formulated. The relations of some decay constants can be simplified when the heavy quark limit is taken into account. After fixing the parameters which appear in a Gaussian wave function, the corresponding decay constants are calculated and compared with those of other theoretical approaches. The curves and the first six ξmoments of ϕ_M(u) are plotted and estimated. These results all endorse the requirements of heavy quark symmetry.

Scattering phases for meson and baryon resonances on general moving-frame lattices

A proposal by Lüscher enables one to compute the scattering phases of elastic two-body systems from the energy levels of the lattice Hamiltonian in a finite volume. In this work we generalize the formalism to S--, P-- and D--wave meson and baryon resonances, and general total momenta. Employing nonvanishing momenta has several advantages, among them making a wider range of energy levels accessible on a single lattice volume and shifting the level crossing to smaller values of $m_πL$.

Effective matrix model for deconfinement in pure gauge theories

We construct matrix models for the deconfining phase transition in SU(N) gauge theories, without dynamical quarks, at a nonzero temperature T. We generalize models with zero and one free parameter to study a model with two free parameters: besides perturbative terms ~T^4, we introduce terms ~T^2 and ~T^0. The two N-dependent parameters are determined by fitting to data from numerical simulations on the lattice for the pressure, including the latent heat. Good agreement is found for the pressure in the semi-quark gluon plasma (QGP), which is the region from Tc, the critical temperature, to about ~4 Tc. Above ~1.2 Tc, the pressure is a sum of a perturbative term, ~ +T^4, and a simple non-perturbative term, essentially just a constant times ~ -Tc^2 T^2. For the pressure, the details of the matrix model only enter within a very narrow window, from Tc to ~1.2 Tc, whose width does not change significantly with N. Without further adjustment, the model also agrees well with lattice data for the 't Hooft loop. This is notable, because in contrast to the pressure, the 't Hooft loop is sensitive to the details of the matrix model over the entire semi-QGP. For the (renormalized) Polyakov loop, though, our results disagree sharply with those from the lattice. Matrix models provide a natural and generic explanation for why the deconfining phase transition in SU(N) gauge theories is of first order not just for three, but also for four or more colors. Lastly, we consider gauge theories where there is no strict order parameter for deconfinement, such as for a G(2) gauge group. To agree with lattice measurements, in the G(2) matrix model it is essential to add terms which generate complete eigenvalue repulsion in the confining phase.

Isospin breaking and $f_0(980)$-$a_0(980)$ mixing in the $η(1405) \to π^{0} f_0(980)$ reaction

We make a theoretical study of the $η(1405) \to π^{0} f_0(980)$ and $η(1405) \to π^{0} a_0(980)$ reactions with an aim to determine the isospin violation and the mixing of the $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ resonances. We make use of the chiral unitary approach where these two resonances appear as composite states of two mesons, dynamically generated by the meson-meson interaction provided by chiral Lagrangians. We obtain a very narrow shape for the $f_0(980)$ production in agreement with a BES experiment. As to the amount of isospin violation, or $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ mixing, assuming constant vertices for the primary $η(1405)\rightarrow π^{0}K\bar{K}$ and $η(1405)\rightarrow π^{0}π^{0}η$ production, we find results which are much smaller than found in the recent experimental BES paper, but consistent with results found in two other related BES experiments. We have tried to understand this anomaly by assuming an I=1 mixture in the $η(1405)$ wave function, but this leads to a much bigger width of the $f_0(980)$ mass distribution than observed experimentally. The problem is solved by using the primary production driven by $η' \to K^* \bar K$ followed by $K^* \to K π$, which induces an extra singularity in the loop functions needed to produce the $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ resonances. Improving upon earlier work along the same lines, and using the chiral unitary approach, we can now predict absolute values for the ratio $Γ(π^0, π^+ π^-)/Γ(π^0, π^0 η)$ which are in fair agreement with experiment. We also show that the same results hold if we had the $η(1475)$ resonance or a mixture of these two states, as seems to be the case in the BES experiment.

Rho-meson resonance broadening in QCD at finite temperature

Thermal Finite Energy QCD sum rules for the vector current correlator are used to study quark-gluon deconfinement. Assuming $ρ$-meson saturation of the correlator in the hadronic sector, and the Operator Product Expansion in QCD, we obtain the temperature behavior of the resonance parameters (coupling, mass, and width), and of the leading vacuum condensates, as well as the perturbative QCD threshold in the complex squared energy plane. The results are consistent with quark-gluon deconfinement at a critical temperature $T_c \simeq 197 MeV$. The temperature dependence of the $ρ$-meson width is of importance for current experiments on dimuon production in nuclear collisions.

Nucleon Scalar and Tensor Charges from Lattice QCD with Light Wilson Quarks

We present 2+1 flavor Lattice QCD calculations of the nucleon scalar and tensor charges. Using the BMW clover-improved Wilson action with pion masses between 150 and 350 MeV and three source-sink separations between 0.9 and 1.4 fm, we achieve good control over excited-state contamination and extrapolation to the physical pion mass. As a consistency check, we also present results from calculations using unitary domain wall fermions with pion masses between 300 and 400 MeV, and using domain wall valence quarks and staggered sea quarks with pion masses between 300 and 600 MeV.

Chiral symmetry restoration, eigenvalue density of Dirac operator and axial U(1) anomaly at finite temperature

We reconsider constraints on the eigenvalue density of the Dirac operator in the chiral symmetric phase of 2 flavor QCD at finite temperature. To avoid possible ultra-violet(UV) divergences, we work on a lattice, employing the overlap Dirac operator, which ensures the exact "chiral" symmetry at finite lattice spacings. Studying multi-point correlation functions in various channels and taking their thermodynamical limit (and then taking the chiral limit), we obtain stronger constraints than those found in the previous studies: both the eigenvalue density at the origin and its first and second derivatives vanish in the chiral limit of 2 flavor QCD. In addition we show that the axial U(1) anomaly becomes invisible in susceptibilities of scalar and pseudo scalar mesons, suggesting that the 2nd order chiral phase transition with the O(4) scaling is not realized in 2 flavor QCD. Possible lattice artifacts when non-chiral lattice Dirac operator is employed are briefly discussed.

Vacuum Polarization and Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking: Phase Diagram of QED with Four-Fermion Contact Interaction

We study chiral symmetry breaking for fundamental charged fermions coupled electromagnetically to photons with the inclusion of four-fermion contact self-interaction term. We employ multiplicatively renormalizable models for the photon dressing function and the electron-photon vertex which minimally ensures mass anomalous dimension = 1. Vacuum polarization screens the interaction strength. Consequently, the pattern of dynamical mass generation for fermions is characterized by a critical number of massless fermion flavors above which chiral symmetry is restored. This effect is in diametrical opposition to the existence of criticality for the minimum interaction strength necessary to break chiral symmetry dynamically. The presence of virtual fermions dictates the nature of phase transition. Miransky scaling laws for the electromagnetic interaction strength and the four-fermion coupling, observed for quenched QED, are replaced by a mean-field power law behavior corresponding to a second order phase transition. These results are derived analytically by employing the bifurcation analysis, and are later confirmed numerically by solving the original non-linearized gap equation. A three dimensional critical surface is drawn to clearly depict the interplay of the relative strengths of interactions and number of flavors to separate the two phases. We also compute the beta-function and observe that it has ultraviolet fixed point. The power law part of the momentum dependence, describing the mass function, reproduces the quenched limit trivially. We also comment on the continuum limit and the triviality of QED.

The non-linear Glasma

We study the evolution of quantum fluctuations in the Glasma created immediately after the collision of heavy nuclei. It is shown how the presence of instabilities leads to an enhancement of non-linear interactions among initially small fluctuations. The non-linear dynamics leads to an enhanced growth of fluctuations in a large momentum region exceeding by far the originally unstable band. We investigate the dependence on the coupling constant at weak coupling using classical statistical lattice simulations for SU(2) gauge theory and show how these non-linearities can be analytically understood within the framework of two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action techniques. The dependence on the coupling constant is only logarithmic in accordance with analytic expectations. Concerning the isotropization of bulk quantities, our results indicate that the system exhibits an order-one anisotropy on parametrically large time scales. Despite this fact, we find that gauge invariant pressure correlation functions seem to exhibit a power law behavior characteristic for wave turbulence.

Exact Solutions of Bethe-Salpeter Equations with Instantaneous Interactions

The Bethe-Salpeter approach allows for quantum-field-theoretic descriptions of relativistic bound states; its inherent complexity, however, usually prevents to find its exact solutions. Under suitable simplifying assumptions about the systems discussed, we derive analytically some examples of rigorous solutions to the instantaneous homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation by relating tentative solutions to the interactions responsible for the formation of bound states.

Shear and Bulk Viscosities of a Weakly Coupled Quark Gluon Plasma with Finite Chemical Potential and Temperature---Leading-Log Results

We calculate the shear (eta) and bulk (zeta) viscosities of a weakly coupled quark gluon plasma at the leading-log order with finite temperature T and quark chemical potential mu. We find that the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio eta/s increases monotonically with mu and eventually scales as (mu/T)^2 at large mu. In contrary, zeta/s is insensitive to mu. Both eta/s and zeta/s are monotonically decreasing functions of the quark flavor number N_f when N_f \geq 2. This property is also observed in pion gas systems. Our perturbative calculation suggests that QCD becomes the most perfect (i.e. with the smallest eta/s) at mu=0 and N_f = 16 (the maximum N_f with asymptotic freedom). It would be interesting to test whether the currently smallest eta/s computed close to the phase transition with mu=0 and N_f = 0 can be further reduced by increasing N_f.

Fragmentation with a Cut on Thrust: Predictions for B-factories

When high-energy single-hadron production takes place inside an identified jet, there are important correlations between the fragmentation and phase-space cuts. For example, when one-hadron yields are measured in on-resonance B-factory data, a cut on the thrust event shape T is required to remove the large b-quark contribution. This leads to a dijet final state restriction for the light-quark fragmentation process. Here we complete our analysis of unpolarized fragmentation of (light) quarks and gluons to a light hadron h with energy fraction z in e+ e- -> dijet + h at the center-of-mass energy Q=10.58 GeV. In addition to the next-to-next-to-leading order resummation of logarithms of 1-T, we include the next-to-leading order (NLO) nonsingular O(1-T) contribution to the cross section, the resummation of threshold logarithms of 1-z, and the leading nonperturbative contribution to the soft function. Our results for the correlations between fragmentation and the thrust cut are presented in a way that can be directly tested against B-factory data. These correlations are also observed in Pythia, but are surprisingly smaller at NLO.

Octet to decuplet electromagnetic transition in a relativistic quark model

We study the octet to decuplet baryon electromagnetic transitions using the covariant spectator quark model, and predict the transition magnetic dipole form factors for those involving the strange baryons. Utilizing SU(3) symmetry, the valence quark contributions are supplemented by the pion cloud dressing based on the one estimated in the $γ^\ast N \to Δ$ reaction. Although the valence quark contributions are dominant in general, the pion cloud effects turn out to be very important to describe the experimental data. We also show that, other mesons besides the pion in particular the kaon, may be relevant for some reactions such as $γ^\ast Σ^+ \to Σ^{*+}$, based on our analysis for the radiative decay widths of the strange decuplet baryons.

Medium effects on the viscosities of a pion gas

The bulk and shear viscosities of a pion gas is obtained by solving the relativistic transport equation in the Chapman-Enskog approximation. In-medium effects are introduced in the $ππ$ cross-section through one-loop self-energies in the propagator of the exchanged $ρ$ and $σ$ mesons. The effect of early chemical freeze-out in heavy ion collisions is implemented through a temperature dependent pion chemical potential. These are found to affect the temperature dependence of the bulk and shear viscosities significantly.

Comparison of the Color Glass Condensate to di-hadron correlations in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions

We perform a detailed comparison of long range rapidity correlations in the Color Glass Condensate framework to high multiplicity di-hadron data in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions from the CMS, ALICE and ATLAS experiments at the LHC. The overall good agreement thus far of the non-trivial systematics of theory with data is strongly suggestive of gluon saturation and the presence of subtle quantum interference effects between rapidity separated gluons. In particular, the yield of pairs collimated in their relative azimuthal angle $Δϕ\sim 0$, is sensitive to the shape of unintegrated gluon distributions in the hadrons that are renormalization group evolved in rapidity from the beam rapidities to those of the measured hadrons. We present estimates for the collimated di-hadron yield expected in central deuteron-gold collisions at RHIC.

Charge symmetry breaking from a chiral extrapolation of moments of quark distribution functions

We present a determination, from lattice QCD, of charge symmetry violation in the spin- independent and spin-dependent parton distribution functions of the nucleon. This is done by chirally extrapolating recent QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration lattice simulations of the first several Mellin moments of the parton distribution functions of octet baryons to the physical point. We find small chiral corrections for the polarized moments, while the corrections are quantitatively significant in the unpolarized case.

Combustion of a neutron star into a strange quark star: The neutrino signal

There are strong indications that the process of conversion of a neutron star into a strange quark star proceeds as a strong deflagration implying that in a few milliseconds almost the whole star is converted. Starting from the three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the combustion process which provide the temperature profiles inside the newly born strange star, we calculate for the first time the neutrino signal that is to be expected if such a conversion process takes place. The neutrino emission is characterized by a luminosity and a duration that is typical for the signal expected from protoneutron stars and represents therefore a powerful source of neutrinos which could be possibly directly detected in case of events occurring close to our Galaxy. We discuss moreover possible connections between the birth of strange stars and explosive phenomena such as supernovae and gamma-ray-bursts.

Heavy Quarkonium moving in a Quark-Gluon Plasma

By means of effective field theory techniques, we study the modifications of some properties of weakly coupled heavy quarkonium states propagating through a quark-gluon plasma at temperatures much smaller than the heavy quark mass, m_Q. Two different cases are considered, corresponding to two different hierarchies between the typical size of the bound state, r, the binding energy, E, the temperature, T, and the screening mass, m_D. The first case corresponds to the hierarchy m_Q >> 1/r >> T >> E >> m_D, relevant for moderate temperatures, and the second one to the hierarchy m_Q >> T >> 1/r, m_D >> E, relevant for studying the dissociation mechanism. In the first case we determine the perturbative correction to the binding energy and to the decay width of states with arbitrary angular momentum, finding that the width is a decreasing function of the velocity. A different behavior characterizes the second kinematical case, being the width of s-wave states a non-monotonic function of the velocity, increasing at moderate velocities and decreasing in the ultra-relativistic limit. We obtain a simple analytical expression of the decay width for T >> 1/r >> m_D >> E at moderate velocities, and we derive the s-wave spectral function for the more general case T >> 1/r, m_D >> E. A brief discussion of the possible experimental signatures as well as a comparison with the relevant lattice data are also presented.
