Unusual face of radiation friction: enhancing production of longitudinal plasma waves

We study the penetration of ultraintense circularly polarized laser pulses into a thick subcritical plasma layer with accounting for radiation friction. We show that radiation pressure is enhanced by radiation friction in the direction transverse to the laser pulse propagation, and that for stronger and longer laser pulses this mechanism dominates over the ordinary ponderomotive pressure, thus resulting in a stronger charge separation than anticipated previously. We give estimates of the effect and compare them with the results of 1D and 2D PIC simulations.

Efficient manifold tracing for planar maps

Invariant manifolds of unstable periodic orbits organize the dynamics of chaotic orbits in phase space. They provide insight into the mechanisms of transport and chaotic advection and have important applications in physical situations involving three-dimensional flows. The numerical determination of invariant manifolds for planar maps is a problem on its own. Efficient and practical techniques to describe these curves must be made available to the scientific community. In this work we introduce an exact calculation method and an approximation technique for tracing the invariant manifolds of unstable periodic orbits of planar maps. The exact method relies in a refinement procedure that prevents redundant calculations occurring in non-refinement approaches and the approximated method is based on an intuitive geometrical decomposition of the manifold in bare and fine details. The resulting approximated manifold is precise when compared to the exact manifold, and its calculation is computationally more efficient, making it ideal for mappings involving intensive calculations like inverse functions or numerical integration of ODEs between crossings in a surface of section.

Strongly-Mismatched Regime of Nonlinear Laser-Plasma Acceleration: Optimization of Laser to Energetic Particle Efficiency

A strongly mismatched regime of self-guided nonlinear laser-plasma acceleration in the bubble regime is modeled for optimization of Laser to Particle energy efficiency with application to recently proposed laser positron accelerator. The strong mismatch, in contrast with the matched condition, arises from the incident laser spot-size being much larger than that needed for equilibration of the laser ponderomotive and electron-ion charge-separation force in the plasma bubble. This is shown to be favorable for optimization of large self-injected electron charge and ultra-low transverse emittance. The prominent signatures of the mismatched regime, strong optical-shock excitation and bubble elongation, are validated using multi-dimensional Particle-In-Cell simulations. This work thus uncovers a generalized regime that is shown to have been favored by many laser-plasma acceleration experiments and opens a novel pathway for a wide-range of future applications.

Simulating background shear flow in local gyrokinetic simulations

Local gyrokinetic simulations solve the gyrokinetic equations with homogeneous background gradients, typically using a doubly periodic domain in the (x,y) plane (i.e. perpendicular to the field line). Spatial Fourier representations are almost universal in local gyrokinetic codes, and the wavevector-remap method was introduced in [Hammett et. al., Bull Am Phys Soc VP1 136, (2006)] as a simple method for expressing the local gyrokinetic equations with a background shear flow in a Fourier representation. Although extensively applied, the wavevector-remap method has not been formally shown to converge, and suffers from known unphysicality when the solutions are plotted in real space [Fox et. al. PPCF 59, 044008]. In this work, we use an analytic solution in slab geometry to demonstrate that wavevector-remap leads to incorrect smeared non-linear coupling between modes. We derive a correct, relatively simple method for solving local gyrokinetics in Fourier space with a background shear flow, and compare this to the wavevector-remap method. This allows us to show that the error in wavevector-remap can be seen as an incorrect rounding in wavenumber space in the nonlinear term. By making minor modifications to the nonlinear term, we implement the corrected wavevector-remap scheme in the GENE[25] code and compare results of the original and corrected wavevector-remap for standard nonlinear benchmark cases. Certain physical phenomena are impacted by the errors in the original remap scheme, and these numerical artefacts do not reduce as system size increases: that is, original wavevector-remap scheme does not converge to the correct result.

Comparison Between Pierce Equivalent Circuit and Recent Discrete Model for Traveling-Wave Tubes

To perform accurate numerical simulations of the traveling-wave tube in time domain, a new approach using field decomposition with large reduction of degrees-of-freedom has been proposed: the discrete model. To assess its validity, we compare it with the well-established Pierce equivalent circuit model in small signal regime. We also discuss associated beam, circuit-beam, and circuit impedances. We demonstrate analytically and with a numerical example that the newly developed discrete model is very close to the Pierce model. Interestingly, small deviations do exist at the edges of the amplification band. We speculate that the deviation from reality is on the Pierce model side, while the discrete model would be more accurate.

On the physical mechanism of three-wave instabilities -- resonance between positive- and negative-action modes

Three-wave instability is a fundamental process that has important applications in many branches of physics. It is widely accepted that the resonant condition $ω_{z}\approxω_{x}+ω_{y}$ for participating waves is the criteria for the onset of the instability. We show that this condition is neither sufficient nor necessary, instead, the exact criteria for the onset of the instability is that a positive-action mode resonates with a negative-action mode. This mechanism is imposed by the topology and geometry of the spectral space. Guided by this new theory, additional instability bands previously unknown are discovered.

Effective Resistivity in Collisionless Magnetic Reconnection

Magnetic reconnection (MR) in collisionless plasma is often attributed to the off-diagonal electron Reynolds stress, which can give rise to a large induction electric field in the reconnection region. However, in magneto-hydro-dynamics (MHD) simulations of MR, it is difficult to implement the full Reynolds stress, which is kinetic in nature. In this paper, we propose a theoretical model of effective resistivity from the first principle of particle dynamics. The derived theoretical formulation of the effective resistivity is verified by full particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, and the corresponding physics is discussed.

Oblique propagation of longitudinal spin-electron acoustic waves under the influence of the Coulomb exchange interaction and the quantum Bohm potential

Influence of the exchange interaction on the properties of the spin-electron acoustic waves at the oblique propagation of waves relatively to the external magnetic field in the magnetically ordered metals is studied. The spectra of the Langmuir wave and the Trivelpiece-Gould wave are also considered. It is well-known that there are two branches of spectrum of the spin-electron acoustic waves in this regime. Change their properties under influence of the exchange interaction is studied. The quantum Bohm potential is included either. The exchange interaction and quantum Bohm potential gives opposite contributions, but they do not compensate each other since they have different dependence on the wave vector. This competition creates a non-monotonical behavior of the Trivelpiece-Gould wave spectrum. The concavity changes in the monotonic spectra of the Langmuir wave and the SEAWs are found.

Generalized curvature modified plasma dispersion functions and Dupree renormalization of toroidal ITG

A new generalization of curvature modified plasma dispersion functions is introduced in order to express Dupree renormalized dispersion relations used in quasi-linear theory. For instance the Dupree renormalized dispersion relation for gyrokinetic, toroidal ion temperature gradient driven (ITG) modes, where the Dupree's diffusion coefficient is assumed to be a low order polynomial of the velocity, can be written entirely using generalized curvature modified plasma dispersion functions: Knm's. Using those, Dupree's formulation of renormalized quasi-linear theory is revisited for the toroidal ITG mode. The Dupree diffusion coefficient has been obtained as a function of velocity using an iteration scheme, first by assuming that the diffusion coefficient is constant at each v (i.e. applicable for slow dependence), and then substituting the resulting v dependence in the form of complex polynomial coefficients into the Knm's for verification. The algorithm generally converges rapidly after only a few iterations. Since the quasi-linear calculation relies on an assumed form for the wave-number spectrum, especially around its peak, practical usefullness of the method is to be determined in actual applications.

A dust particle based technique to measure potential profiles in a plasma

A novel technique to measure potential profiles in a plasma based on the visualization of charged tracer dust particles is reported. The method is used to experimentally determine the potential around a grounded wire that is mounted on the cathode of a DC glow discharge Argon plasma produced in a $Π$--shaped Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device. The tracer particles, consisting of a few micron sized mono-dispersive Melamine Formaldehyde (MF) grains, are made to flow over the grounded wire by suitable variations in the background gas flow. By a visual tracking of the individual particle trajectories, that yields their positions and velocities at various times, the potential values at these positions are directly estimated by using energy conservation arguments. The results agree very well with conventional probe based measurements. The technique is free of some of the inherent limitations of probe based diagnostics and offers a direct and minimally invasive means of visualizing potential profiles in a plasma.

A novel superconducting magnetic levitation method to support the laser fusion capsule by using permanent magnets

A novel magnetic levitation support method is proposed, which can relieve the perturbation caused by traditional support methods and provide more accurate position control of the capsule. This method can keep the perfect symmetry of the octahedral spherical hohlraum and has the characteristics in stability, tunability and simplicity. It is also favorable that all the results, such as supporting forces acting on the superconducting capsule, are calculated analytically, and numerical simulations are performed to verify these results. A typical realistic design is proposed and discussed in detail. The superconducting coating material is suggested, and the required superconducting properties are listed. Damped oscillation of the floating capsule in thin helium gas is discussed, and the restoring time is estimated.

Testing the Use of the Principal Component Analysis Method to Detect Slight Changes in Nitrogen and Oxygen Spectra Induced by a Change in Discharge Conditions

In this work, the influence of crossed magnetic fields (B=100 Gauss) on the UV-vis and NIR spectra and breakdown voltages of nitrogen and oxygen at a pair of parallel plane copper electrodes with a spacing d=2 cm and diameter R= 2.2 cm are studied. Working pressures of the gases are kept between 0.1 and 1 Torr. The breakdown voltage measurements across the electrodes are conducted by Tektronix P6015 high voltage probe connected to a Tektronix 2430A oscilloscope. The Spectra of discharge plasmas in the absence and presence of magnetic fields are recorded between 200-1100 nm. by AvaSpec-ULS3648. In order to analyse observed spectra of nitrogen and oxygen plasmas, one of the pattern recognition techniques of principal component analysis has been employed. Results of principal component analysis shows that the presence of magnetic field cause the plasma particles to move in condensed way for the oxygen but not for the nitrogen. Principal component spectra shows that small amount of the cross magnetic field results in the Stokes linear polarization of the most of the oxygen and NIII (337 nm) of the Nitrogen species in the plasmas. The non-local thermal equilibrium based spectroscopic modeling of nitrogen and oxygen plasma gives that the electron temperature of nitrogen and oxygen are Te=25000 and 5000 Kelvin respectively.

Regularized $κ$-distributions with non-diverging moments

For various plasma applications the so-called (non-relativistic) $κ$-distribution is widely used to reproduce and interpret the suprathermal particle populations exhibiting a power-law distribution in velocity or energy. Despite its reputation the standard $κ$-distribution as a concept is still disputable, mainly due to the velocity moments $M_{l}$ which make possible a macroscopic characterization, but whose existence is restricted only to low orders $l < 2κ-1$. In fact, the definition of the $κ$-distribution itself is conditioned by the existence of the moment of order $l=2$ (i.e., kinetic temperature) satisfied only for $κ> 3/2$. In order to resolve these critical limitations we introduce the regularized $κ$-distribution with non-diverging moments. For the evaluation of all velocity moments a general analytical expression is provided enabling a significant step towards a macroscopic (fluid-like) description of space plasmas, and, in general, any system of $κ$-distributed particles.

Latitudinal structure and dynamic of the photospheric magnetic field

Analysis of the structure and dynamics of the magnetic field of the Sun is fundamental for understanding of the origin of solar activity and variability as well as for the study of solar-terrestrial relations. Observations of the large scale magnetic field in the photosphere taken at the Wilcox Solar Observatory from 1976 up to 2007 have been analysed to deduce its latitudinal and longitudinal structures, its differential rotation, and their variability in time. This paper is dedicated to the analysis and dynamics of the latitudinal structure of the solar magnetic field over three solar cycles 21, 22, 23. The main results discussed in this paper are the following: the large scale latitudinal structure is antisymmetric and composed of four zones with boundaries located at the equator, -25 and + 25 degrees, stable over 10-11 years with a time delay of about 5-6 years in near-equatorial zones. The variability and North-South asymmetry of polarity waves running from the equator to the poles with 2-3 - year period was studied in detail.

Uniformly accurate methods for Vlasov equations with non-homogeneous strong magnetic field

In this paper, we consider the numerical solution of highly-oscillatory Vlasov and Vlasov-Poisson equations with non-homogeneous magnetic field. Designed in the spirit of recent uniformly accurate methods, our schemes remain insensitive to the stiffness of the problem, in terms of both accuracy and computational cost. The specific difficulty (and the resulting novelty of our approach) stems from the presence of a non-periodic oscillation, which necessitates a careful ad-hoc reformulation of the equations. Our results are illustrated numerically on several examples.

Excitation of plasma wakefields by proton beam

A stationary wave solution is obtained for the proton driven plasma wake field accelerator (PDPWFA). The wake field excitation by trains of equidistant proton microbunches produced due to self modulational instability has been discussed. Also, considering the necessity of the external magnetic field to control focusing of the beam, studies on the effect of magnetic field on the wake field structures have been done.

Universality of Poisson-driven plasma fluctuations in the Alcator C-Mod scrape-off layer

Large-amplitude, intermittent fluctuations are ubiquitous in the boundary region of magnetically confined plasmas and lead to detrimental plasma-wall interactions in the next-generation, high duty cycle fusion power experiments. Using gas puff imaging data time series from the scrape-off layer in the Alcator C-Mod device, it is here demonstrated that the large-amplitude fluctuations can be described as a super-position of pulses with fixed shape and constant duration. By applying a new deconvolution algorithm on the data time series with a two-sided exponential pulse function, the arrival times and amplitudes of the pulses can be estimated and the measurement time series can be reconstructed with high accuracy. The pulse amplitudes are shown to follow an exponential distribution. The waiting times between pulses are uncorrelated, their distribution has an exponential tail, and the number of arrivals is a linear function of time. This demonstrates that pulse arrivals follow a homogeneous Poisson process. Identical statistical properties apply to both ohmic and high confinement mode plasmas, clearly demonstrating universality of the fluctuation statistics in the boundary region of Alcator C-Mod.

Lower-hybrid oscillations in a cold magnetized electron-positron-ion plasma

In this paper, we obtain the dispersion relation for the lower-hybrid oscillations/waves in a cold magnetized electron-positron-ion (e-p-i) plasma. It is found that the frequency of the lower-hybrid oscillations in an e-p-i plasma is approximate $1/\sqrt{3}$ times the frequency of lower-hybrid oscillations in an electron-ion (e-i) plasma, provided the plasma density is high, and the equilibrium densities of the positron and the ion are balanced. The present work may have some relevance for laboratory/astrophysical e-p-i plasmas.
