The Case for a Muon Collider Higgs Factory

We propose the construction of a compact Muon Collider Higgs Factory. Such a machine can produce up to \sim 14,000 at 8\times 10^{31} cm^-2 sec^-1 clean Higgs events per year, enabling the most precise possible measurement of the mass, width and Higgs-Yukawa coupling constants.

Deconfinement of strangeness and freeze-out from charge fluctuations

We use Lattice QCD calculations of fluctuations and correlations of various conserved charges to show that the deconfinement of strangeness takes place in the chiral crossover region of QCD; however, inside the quark-gluon plasma strange quarks remain strongly interacting at least up to temperatures twice the QCD crossover temperature. Further, we discuss how the freeze-out parameters of heavy-ion collisions can be determined in a model-independent way through direct comparisons between experimentally measured higher order cumulants of conserved charges and corresponding Lattice QCD calculations. Utilizing the preliminary data from the STAR and PHENIX experiments we illustrate this method. Although, the Lattice QCD based determinations of the freeze-out parameters utilizing data sets of different experiments and different observables are currently not consistent with each other, it is tantalizing to see that all the observed freeze-out parameters lie very close to the chiral/deconfinement crossover region of QCD.

The Pitfalls of Dark Crossings

We explore the connection between pair production of dark matter particles at collider experiments and annihilation of dark matter in the early and late universe, with a focus on the correlation between the two time-reversed processes. We consider both a model-independent effective theory framework, where the initial and final states are assumed to not change under time-reversal, and concrete UV-complete models within the framework of supersymmetric extensions to the Standard Model. Even within the effective theory framework (where crossing symmetry is in some sense assumed), we find that the predictions of that symmetry can vary by orders of magnitude depending on the details of the selected effective interaction. Within the supersymmetric models we consider, we find that there is an even wilder variation in the expectations one can derive for collider observables based on cross-symmetric processes such as having a thermal relic or given indirect dark matter detection rates. We also explore additional "pitfalls" where naïve crossing symmetry badly fails, including models with very light mediators leading to Sommerfeld enhancements and/or dark matter bound states.

Composite Weak Bosons at the Large Hadron Collider

In a composite model of the weak bosons the excited bosons, in particular the p-wave bosons, are studied. The state with the lowest mass is identified with the boson, which has been discovered recently at the "Large Hadron Collider" at CERN. Specific properties of the excited weak bosons are studied, in particular their decays into weak bosons and into photons.

Variational approach to the inhomogeneous chiral phase in quark matter

The inhomogeneous chiral phase is discussed in QCD at finite temperature and/or density. We study the phase diagram on the density-temperature plane by taking into account the effect of the current mass by a variational method. It is demonstrated that our framework well describes the inhomogeneous phase over the whole phase region.

The TeV Cosmic-Ray Anisotropy from Local Dark Matter Annihilation

Several experiments have reported regions in the TeV sky with an excess of cosmic rays. Here we consider the possibility that the excess cosmic rays are coming from dark matter annihilation in nearby subhalos. We provide motivation for dark matter as the source of the excess and show that dark matter annihilations can naturally produce the cosmic ray anisotropy without the need for exotic dark matter models. We show that viable dark matter explanations of the cosmic ray excess are consistent with current measurements of antiprotons, positrons, and gamma-rays. Additionally, we show that the dark matter interpretation of the observed anisotropy predicts detections in several cosmic ray channels by the next generation of experiments.

Neutron Star Matter

In this presentation I discuss two aspects of the neutron-matter equation of state. One relates to the symmetry energy of nuclear matter and empirical constraints on its slope parameter at saturation density. The second deals with spatially inhomogeneous chiral phases of deconfined quark matter in the inner core of a neutron star.

On the Perturbative Evaluation of Thermal Green's Functions in the Bulk and Shear Channels of Yang-Mills Theory

In this PhD thesis, I will review recent progress in perturbative studies of energy momentum tensor correlators in high-temperature Yang-Mills theory. After briefly introducing the necessary tools and physical motivation, I proceed to discuss the machinery developed for the extraction of next-to-leading order Operator Product Expansions and thermal spectral functions and to introduce the results obtained in the bulk and shear channels of Yang-Mills theory. Particular emphasis is placed on the comparison of the results with recent lattice and gauge/gravity calculations, as well as on discussing their use in extracting the corresponding transport coefficients from Euclidean lattice data.

LHC Results Highlights (CLASHEP 2013)

The good performance of the LHC provided enough data at 7 TeV and 8 TeV to allow the experiments to perform very competitive measurements and to expand the knowledge about the fundamental interaction far beyond that from previous colliders. This report summarizes the highlights of the results obtained with these data samples by the four large experiments, covering all the topics of the physics program and focusing on those exploiting the possibilities of the LHC.

Probes of the small x gluon via exclusive J/psi and Upsilon

New, more precise data on diffractive J/psi photoproduction and on exclusive J/psi production in the process pp -> p + J/psi + p at the LHC allow a better constraint on the low-x gluon distribution in the domain of relatively low scales Q^2 ~ 2-6 GeV^2. We account for the `skewed' effect and for the real part of the amplitude, as well as for the absorptive corrections in the case of the exclusive process pp -> p + J/psi + p. The predictions for exclusive J/psi production at \sqrt{s}=8 and 14 TeV and for exclusive Upsilon(1S) production at 7, 8 and 14 TeV are also given. We present results at leading and next-to-leading order.

Heavy-quark production in deep-inelastic scattering

We report recent experimental and theoretical progress concerning the heavy-quark electro-production in the context of the ABM11 parton distribution function (PDF) fit. In the updated ABM11 analysis, including the recent combined HERA charm data, the MSbar-values of the c-quark mass m_c(m_c)=1.24 +- 0.03 (exp)\,^{+0.03}_{-0.02}(scale)\,^{+0.00}_{-0.07} (th) and m_c(m_c)=1.15\, +- 0.04 (exp)\,^{+0.04}_{-0.00} (scale) are determined at NNLO and NLO, respectively. The values of m_c obtained are compared to other determinations including the ones based on the various variable-flavor-number (VFN) scheme prescriptions. The VFN scheme uncertainties related to the matching of the 4(5)-flavor PDFs with the 3(4)-flavor ones are discussed.

NLO corrections to WWZ production at the LHC

The production of WWZ at the LHC is an important process to test the quartic gauge couplings of the Standard Model as well as an important background for new physics searches. A good theoretical understanding at next-to-leading order (NLO) is therefore valuable. In this paper, we present the calculation of the NLO electroweak (EW) correction to this channel with on-shell gauge bosons in the final state. It is then combined with the NLO QCD correction to get the most up-to-date prediction. We study the impact of these corrections on the total cross section and some distributions. The NLO EW correction is small for the total cross section but becomes important in the high energy regime for the gauge boson transverse momentum distributions.

BEC-BCS Crossover and the EoS of Strongly Interacting Systems

We show that at sufficiently strong coupling, quarks form a BEC system that does not collapse into a pressureless gas at zero temperature only if the diquark-diquark repulsion is self-consistently taken into account. It is found that there is a critical value of the coupling constant of the diquark-diquark interaction beyond which the tendency at zero temperature of the strongly interacting diquark gas to condense into the system ground state with zero momentum is compensated by the repulsion between diquarks so keeping a positive pressure with no significant variation along the whole strongly interacting region. We discuss possible implications of the diquark-diquark interaction for the astrophysics of compact stars. Also we analyze the effect of a strong magnetic field for the BEC-BCS crossover.

Computing the full two-loop gluon Regge trajectory within Lipatov's high energy effective action

We discuss computational details of our recent result, namely, the first derivation of the two-loop gluon Regge trajectory within the framework of Lipatov's high energy effective action. In particular, we elaborate on the direct evaluation of Feynman two-loop diagrams by using the Mellin-Barnes representations technique. Our result is in precise agreement with previous computations in the literature, providing this way a highly non-trivial test of the effective action and the proposed subtraction and renormalization scheme combined with our approach for the treatment of the loop diagrams.

Monte Carlo techniques in small-x physics: Formal studies and phenomenology

We discuss the solution to the BFKL equation in the adjoint representation at LO and NLO accuracy for the N = 4 SUSY theory. We use Monte Carlo techniques to study numerically the Gluon Green's function at LO and NLO directly written in the transverse momentum space which allows for the factorization of its infrared divergencies. Finally, we discuss the applicability of our approach to phenomenological searches for the BKP Odderon at the LHC.
