Proton induced activity in graphite - comparison between measurement and simulation

The Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) operates the Meson production target stations E and M with 590 MeV protons at currents of up to 2.4 mA. Both targets consist of polycrystalline graphite and rotate with 1 Hz due to the high power deposition (40 kW at 2 mA) in Target E. The graphite wheel is regularly exchanged and disposed as radioactive waste after a maximum of 3 to 4 years in operation, which corresponds to about 30 to 40 Ah of proton fluence. For disposal, the nuclide inventory of the long-lived isotopes (T(1/2) > 60 d) has to be calculated and reported to the authorities. Measurements of gamma emitters, as well as 3H, 10Be and 14C, were carried out using different techniques. The measured specific activities are compared to Monte Carlo particle transport simulations performed with MCNPX2.7.0 using the BERTINI-DRESNER-RAL (default model in MCNPX2.7.0) and INCL4.6/ABLA07 as nuclear reaction models.

Activation assessment of the soil around the ESS accelerator tunnel

Activation of the soil surrounding the ESS accelerator tunnel calculated by the MARS15 code is presented. A detailed composition of the soil, that comprises about 30 different chemical elements, is considered. Spatial distributions of the produced activity are provided in both transverse and longitudinal direction. A realistic irradiation profile for the entire planned lifetime of the facility is used. The nuclear transmutation and decay of the produced radionuclides is calculated with the DeTra code which is a built-in tool for the MARS15 code. Radionuclide production by low-energy neutrons is calculated using the ENDF/B-VII evaluated nuclear data library. In order to estimate quality of this activation assessment, a comparison between calculated and measured activation of various foils in a similar radiation environment is presented.

"Shadowing" of the electromagnetic field of relativistic charged particles

In radiation processes such as a transition radiation, diffraction radiation, etc. based on relativistic electrons passing through or near an opaque screen, the electron self-field is partly shadowed after the screen over a distance of the order of the formation length $γ^2λ$. This effect has been investigated on coherent diffraction radiation (DR) by electron bunches. Absorbing and conductive half-plane screens were placed at various distances L before a standard DR source (inclined half-plane mirror). The radiation intensity was reduced when the screen was at small L and on the same side as the mirror. No reduction was observed when the screen was on the opposite side. It is worth noting that absorbing and conductive half-plane screens produce the same shadowing effect. The shadowing effect is responsible for a bound on the intensity of Smith-Purcell radiation.

Transition radiation on semi-infinite plate and Smith-Purcell effect

The Smith-Purcell radiation is usually measured when an electron passes over the grating of metallic stripes. However, for high frequencies (exceeding the plasma frequency of the grating material) none material could be treated as a conductor, but ought to be considered as a dielectric with plasma-like permittivity. So for describing Smith-Purcell radiation in the range of high frequencies new theoretical approaches are needed. In the present paper we apply the simple variant of eikonal approximation developed earlier to the case of radiation on the set of parallel semi-infinite dielectric plates. The formulae obtained describe the radiation generated by the particles both passing through the plates (traditionally referred as "transition radiation") and moving in vacuum over the grating formed by the edges of the plates (traditionally referred as "diffraction radiation", and, taking into account the periodicity of the plates arrangement, as Smith-Purcell radiation).

Simulations of electron channeling in bent silicon crystal

We report on the results of theoretical simulations of the electron channeling in a bent silicon crystal. The dynamics of ultra-relativistic electrons in the crystal is computed using the newly developed part [1] of the MBN Explorer package [2,3], which simulates classical trajectories of in a crystalline medium by integrating the relativistic equations of motion with account for the interaction between the projectile and crystal atoms. A Monte Carlo approach is employed to sample the incoming electrons and to account for thermal vibrations of the crystal atoms. The electron channeling along Si(110) crystallographic planes are studied for the projectile energies 195--855 MeV and different curvatures of the bent crystal.

Machine-Related Backgrounds in the SiD Detector at ILC

With a multi-stage collimation system and magnetic iron spoilers in the tunnel, the background particle fluxes on the ILC detector can be substantially reduced. At the same time, beam-halo interactions with collimators and protective masks in the beam delivery system create fluxes of muons and other secondary particles which can still exceed the tolerable levels for some of the ILC sub-detectors. Results of modeling of such backgrounds in comparison to those from the e+ e- interactions are presented in this paper for the SiD detector.

The Flexible Plasma Trap (FPT) for the production of overdense plasmas

Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources are currently the most efficient ion sources among those used in facilities dedicated to nuclear physics. The need for a more flexible magnetic field and RF injection system suggested to design and develop a different type of plasma trap, named Flexible Plasma Trap (FPT). The magnetic field of FPT is generated by means of three coils while microwaves in the range 4-7 GHz can be injected by three different inputs, one placed along the axis and two placed radially. FPT can work in different plasma heating schemes so it will be an ideal tool for studies of plasma and multidisciplinary physics. Moreover, a microwave launcher has been designed and installed to the FPT for launching microwaves with a variable tilt angle with respect to the magnetic field. This paper describes the characteristics of the FPT along with the preliminary results of plasma diagnostics.

The NuMAX Long Baseline Neutrino Factory Concept

A Neutrino Factory where neutrinos of all species are produced in equal quantities by muon decay is described as a facility at the intensity frontier for exquisite precision providing ideal conditions for ultimate neutrino studies and the ideal complement to Long Baseline Facilities like LBNF at Fermilab. It is foreseen to be built in stages with progressively increasing complexity and performance, taking advantage of existing or proposed facilities at an existing laboratory like Fermilab. A tentative layout based on a recirculating linac providing opportunities for considerable saving is discussed as well as its possible evolution toward a muon collider if and when requested by Physics. Tentative parameters of the various stages are presented as well as the necessary R&D to address the technological issues and demonstrate their feasibility.

Hybrid Methods for Muon Accelerator Simulations with Ionization Cooling

Muon ionization cooling involves passing particles through solid or liquid absorbers. Careful simulations are required to design muon cooling channels. New features have been developed for inclusion in the transfer map code COSY Infinity to follow the distribution of charged particles through matter. To study the passage of muons through material, the transfer map approach alone is not sufficient. The interplay of beam optics and atomic processes must be studied by a hybrid transfer map--Monte-Carlo approach in which transfer map methods describe the deterministic behavior of the particles, and Monte-Carlo methods are used to provide corrections accounting for the stochastic nature of scattering and straggling of particles. The advantage of the new approach is that the vast majority of the dynamics are represented by fast application of the high-order transfer map of an entire element and accumulated stochastic effects. The gains in speed are expected to simplify the optimization of cooling channels which is usually computationally demanding. Progress on the development of the required algorithms and their application to modeling muon ionization cooling channels is reported.

Cyclinac Medical Accelerators Using Pulsed C6+/H2+ Ion Sources

Charged particle therapy, or so-called hadrontherapy, is developing very rapidly. There is large pressure on the scientific community to deliver dedicated accelerators, providing the best possible treatment modalities at the lowest cost. In this context, the Italian research Foundation TERA is developing fast-cycling accelerators, dubbed 'cyclinacs'. These are a combination of a cyclotron (accelerating ions to a fixed initial energy) followed by a high gradient linac boosting the ions energy up to the maximum needed for medical therapy. The linac is powered by many independently controlled klystrons to vary the beam energy from one pulse to the next. This accelerator is best suited to treat moving organs with a 4D multi-painting spot scanning technique. A dual proton/carbon ion cyclinac is here presented. It consists of an Electron Beam Ion Source, a superconducting isochronous cyclotron and a high-gradient linac. All these machines are pulsed at high repetition rate (100-400 Hz). The source should deliver both C6+ and H2+ ions in short pulses (1.5 μs flat-top) and with sufficient intensity (at least 108 fully stripped carbon ions at 300 Hz). The cyclotron accelerates the ions to 120 MeV/u. It features a compact design (with superconducting coils) and a low power consumption. The linac has a novel C-band high gradient structure and accelerates the ions to variable energies up to 400 MeV/u. High RF frequencies lead to power consumptions which are much lower than the ones of synchrotrons for the same ion extraction energy. This work is part of a collaboration with the CLIC group, which is working at CERN on high-gradient electron-positron colliders.

Study of the pulse power supply unit for the four-horn system of the CERN to Frejus neutrino super beam

The power supply studies for the four-horn system for the CERN to Fréjus neutrino Super Beam oscillation experiment are discussed here. The power supply is being studied to meet the physics potential and the mega-watt (MW) power requirements of the proton driver of the Super Beam. A one-half sinusoid current waveform with a 350 kA maximum current and pulse length of 100 μs at 50 Hz frequency is generated and distributed to four-horns. In order to provide the necessary current needed to focus the charged mesons producing the neutrino beam, a bench of capacitors is charged at 50 Hz frequency to a +12 kV reference voltage and then discharged through a large switch to each horn via a set of strip-lines at the same rate. A current recovery stage allows to invert rapidly the negative voltage of the capacitor after the discharging stage in order to recuperate large part of the injected energy and thus to limit the power consuption. The energy recovery efficiency of that system is very high at 97%. For feasibility reasons, a modular architecture has been adopted with 8 modules connected in parallel to deliver 44 kA peak currents into the four-horn system.

Photon collider Higgs factories

The discovery of the Higgs boson (and still nothing else) have triggered appearance of many proposals of Higgs factories for precision measurement of the Higgs properties. Among them there are several projects of photon colliders (PC) without e+e- in addition to PLC based on e+e- linear colliders ILC and CLIC. In this paper, following a brief discussion of Higgs factories physics program I give an overview of photon colliders based on linear colliders ILC and CLIC, and of the recently proposed photon-collider Higgs factories with no e+e- collision option based on recirculation linacs in ring tunnels.

Accurate determination of the free-free Gaunt factor; I - non-relativistic Gaunt factors

Modern spectral synthesis codes need the thermally averaged free-free Gaunt factor defined over a very wide range of parameter space in order to produce an accurate prediction for the spectrum emitted by an ionized plasma. Until now no set of data exists that would meet this need in a fully satisfactory way. We have therefore undertaken to produce a table of very accurate non-relativistic Gaunt factors over a much wider range of parameters than has ever been produced before. We first produced a table of non-averaged Gaunt factors, covering the parameter space log10(epsilon_i) = -20 to +10 and log10(w) = -30 to +25. We then continued to produce a table of thermally averaged Gaunt factors covering the parameter space log10(gamma^2) = -6 to +10 and log10(u) = -16 to +13. Finally we produced a table of the frequency integrated Gaunt factor covering the parameter space log10(gamma^2) = -6 to +10. All the data presented in this paper are available online.

Accelerator Control System at KEKB and the Linac

KEKB completed all of the technical milestones, and had offered important insights into the flavor structure of elementary particles, especially the CP violation. The accelerator control system at KEKB and injector linac was initiated by a combination of scripting languages at the operation layer and EPICS at the equipment layer. During the project many features were implemented to achieve extreme performance out of the machine. Especially the online linkage to the accelerator simulation played an essential role. In order to further improve the reliability and flexibility two major concepts were additionally introduced later in the project, namely the channel access everywhere and the dual-tier controls. Based on the improved control system a concept of virtual accelerators were realized that enables the single injector linac serve as three separate injectors to KEKB HER, LER and Photon Factory, respectively. Those control technologies are indispensable for the future particle accelerators.

CERN antiproton target: hydrocode analysis of its core material dynamic response under proton beam impact

Antiprotons are produced at CERN by colliding a 26 GeV/c proton beam with a fixed target made of a 3 mm diameter, 55 mm length iridium core. The inherent characteristics of antiproton production involve extremely high energy depositions inside the target when impacted by each primary proton beam, making it one of the most dynamically demanding among high energy solid targets in the world, with a rise temperature above 2000 °C after each pulse impact and successive dynamic pressure waves of the order of GPa's. An optimized redesign of the current target is foreseen for the next 20 years of operation. As a first step in the design procedure, this numerical study delves into the fundamental phenomena present in the target material core under proton pulse impact and subsequent pressure wave propagation by the use of hydrocodes. Three major phenomena have been identified, (i) the dominance of a high frequency radial wave which produces destructive compressive-to-tensile pressure response (ii) The existence of end-of-pulse tensile waves and its relevance on the overall response (iii) A reduction of 40% in tensile pressure could be obtained by the use of a high density tantalum cladding.

Low emittance muon accelerator studies with production from positrons on target

A new scheme to produce very low emittance muon beams using a positron beam of about 45~GeV interacting on electrons on target is presented. One of the innovative topics to be investigated is the behaviour of the positron beam stored in a low emittance ring with a thin target, that is directly inserted in the ring chamber to produce muons. Muons can be immediately collected at the exit of the target and transported to two $μ^+$ and $μ^-$ accumulator rings and then accelerated and injected in muon collider rings. We focus in this paper on the simulation of the e$^+$ beam interacting with the target, the effect of the target on the 6-D phase space and the optimization of the e$^+$ ring design to maximize the energy acceptance. We will investigate the performance of this scheme, ring plus target system, comparing different multi-turn simulations. The source is considered for use in a multi-TeV collider in ref.[1]

Injection orbit matching for CSNS/RCS

The Rapid Cycling Synchrotron(RCS) of China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS) employs painting injection to achieve uniform beam distribution and suppress space-charge effects. In the painting injection, the mismatch between the injection beam orbit and circulating orbit could make the non-uniformity of beam distribution and emittance growth, which may lead to beam loss. To match the injection beam orbit and the circulating beam orbit, it is necessary to identify the orbit of injection beam relative to the circulating orbit in the injection point. However, it's hard to measure this relative injection orbit directly. Theoretically, the relative injection beam orbit can be deduced by measuring the turn-by-turn beam position of a single turn injection beam. However, the intensity of single turn injected beam is too low to be measured with sufficient signal-noise ratio by using beam position monitor(BPM). In this paper, two effective methods based on multi-turn injection and turn-by-turn BPM are given to perform the match between the injection and the circulating beam orbit. The simulation results and application in the beam commissioning of CSNS/RCS show the validity of the methods.
