Status of the lower spins in the Rarita-Schwinger four-vector spinor $ψ_μ$ within the method of the combined Lorentz- and Poincaré invariant projectors

We investigate the status of the lower spin-1/2 companions to spin-3/2 within the four-vector spinor, $ψ_μ$. According to its reducibility, $ψ_μ\longrightarrow \left[(1/2,1)\oplus (1,1/2)\right]\oplus [(1/2,0)\oplus (0,1/2)]$ this representation space contains two spin-1/2 sectors, the first one transforming as a genuine Dirac-spinor, $(1/2,0)\oplus (0,1/2)$, and the second as the companion to spin-3/2 in $(1/2,1)\oplus (1,1/2)$. In order to correctly identify the covariant spin-1/2 degrees of freedom in the Rarita-Schwinger field of interest we exploit the properties of the Casimir invariants of the Lorentz algebra to distinguish between the irreducible Dirac- and $(1/2,1)\oplus (1,1/2)$ representation spaces and construct corresponding momentum-independent (static) projectors which we then combine with a dynamical spin-1/2 Poincaré covariant projector. In so doing we obtain two spin-1/2 wave equation, and prove them to be causal within an electromagnetic field. We furthermore calculate Compton scattering off each one of the above states, and find that the amplitudes corresponding to the first spin-1/2 are identical to those of a Dirac particle and conclude on the observability of this state. Also for the second spin-1/2 we find finite cross sections in all directions in the ultra-relativistic limit, and conclude that its observability is not excluded neither by causality of propagation within an electromagnetic environment, nor by unitarity of the Compton scattering amplitudes in the ultraviolet. Finally, we notice that the method of the combined Lorentz- and Poincaré invariant projectors could be instrumental in opening a new avenue toward the consistent description of any spin by means of second order Lagrangians written in terms of sufficiently large reducible representation spaces equipped with separate Lorentz-- and Dirac indices.

Generating functional of ChPT at one loop for non-minimal operators

The divergent part of the one-loop effective action in Chiral Perturbation Theory with virtual photons has been evaluated in an arbitrary covariant gauge. The differential operator, that emerges in the functional determinant, is of a non-minimal type, for which the standard heat kernel methods are not directly applicable. Both SU(2) and SU(3) cases have been worked out. A comparison with existing results in the literature is given.

High density effects in ultrahigh neutrino interactions

The high parton density present at high energies and large nuclei is expected to modify the lepton - hadron cross section and the associated observables. In this paper we analyse the impact of the high density effects in the average inelasticity and the neutrino - nucleus cross section at ultra high energies. We compare the predictions associated to the linear DGLAP dynamics with those from the Color Glass Condensate formalism, which includes non-linear effects. Our results demonstrated that the non-linear effects reduce the average inelasticity and that the predictions of the distinct approaches for the neutrino - nucleus cross section at ultra-high energies are similar.

Dynamical Yukawa Couplings

The matter content of the Standard Model admits a global symmetry due to the generational structure of the spectrum respected by all interactions except for fermion couplings to the Higgs doublet. This symmetry is identified as the largest possible global symmetry of the free theory and extended to the case of massive neutrinos. The violation of such symmetry is then assumed dynamical and the value of the Yukawa couplings is fixed by a variational principle. This ansatz yields compelling results: Quark Yukawas naturally accommodate hierarchical masses and small mixing whereas Lepton Yukawas exhibit a hierarchical pattern for charged leptons and simultaneously degeneracy in the neutrino sector correlated with large mixing and Majorana phases. The difference in the mixing patterns of Quark and Leptons in this scheme stem from the Dirac vs Majorana nature of fermions.

Scattering amplitudes for high-energy factorization

A prescription is presented to construct manifestly gauge invariant tree-level scattering amplitudes with one or two off-shell initial-state gluons for processes with arbitrary particles in the final state, which allows for calculations that are efficient and easy to automate. These scattering amplitudes are relevant for factorization schemes beyond collinear factorization that allow the gluons entering the partonic cross section to have non-vanishing transversal momentum components.

Towards closure testing of parton determinations

The method of closure testing for analysing the effectiveness of a PDF fitting procedure is discussed. In order to pass a closure test, a fitting methodology must be able to reproduce a known generating function in a fit to an ideal pseudo-dataset generated by that PDF up to the level of experimental uncertainty in the data. Here we present an initial study of the closure property of the NNPDF fitting methodology. An idealised pseudo-dataset is generated by a set of toy PDFs that differ substantially from previous NNPDF determinations. In a fit to this pseudodata, the NNPDF methodology is shown to be able to reproduce well the toy PDFs used as a generating function.

Phase structure of hadronic and Polyakov-loop extended NJL model at finite isospin density

It is believed that there exists a rich phase structure of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at finite temperature and baryon density, namely, the deconfinement process from hadron gas to quark-gluon plasma, the transition from chiral symmetry breaking phase to the symmetry restoration phase, and the color superconductivity at low temperature and high baryon density. In the present work we study the hadron-quark phase transition by investigating the binodal surface and extending it to finite temperature in order to mimic the QCD phase diagram. In order to obtain these conditions we use different models for the two possible phases, namely the quark and hadron phases. The phase separation boundary (binodal) is determined by the Gibbs criteria for phase equilibrium. The boundaries of the mixed phase and the related critical points for symmetric and asymmetric matter are obtained. Isospin effects appear to be rather significant. The critical endpoint (CEP) and the phase structure are also studied in the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model.

Heavy Quarks, Origin of Mass, and CP Violation for Universe

A scale-invariant "Gap Equation" is constructed for chiral quark $Q$ by Goldstone, or $V_L$, exchange, where massless input is guaranteed by gauge invariance. A numerical solution is found for Yukawa coupling $\sim 4π$. In turn, because this gap equation is scale invariant, the strong coupling solution is compatible with a 126 GeV dilaton, which would be a true messenger from higher energies. Some possible phenomena pertaining to heavy chiral quarks at few TeV scale is offered. Adding this heavy quark sector may provide enough CP violation for generating the matter dominance of the Universe.

Superconducting phases of strange quark matter in the NJL model

We analyze the color-flavor-locked phase of strange quark matter modelled by the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) framework with and without magnetic field and discuss some additional constraints on the stability scenario when a high magnetic field is applied. We compare the results obtained by employing the MIT Bag Model and discuss the pairing gap behavior and its influence on the equation of state.

Properties of twice four families of quarks and leptons, of scalars and gauge fields as predicted by the spin-charge-family theory

The spin-charge-family theory, proposed by the author as a possible new way to explain the assumptions of the standard model, predicts at the low energy regime two decoupled groups of four families of quarks and leptons. In two successive breaks the massless families, first the group of four and at the second break the rest four families, gain nonzero mass matrices. The families are identical with respect to the charges and spin. There are two kinds of fields in this theory, which manifest at low energies as the gauge vector and scalar fields: the fields which couple to the charges and spin, and the fields which couple to the family quantum numbers. In loop corrections to the tree level mass matrices both kinds start to contribute coherently. The fourth family of the lower group of four families is predicted to be possibly observed at the LHC and the stable of the higher four families -- the fifth family -- is the candidate to constitute the dark matter. Properties of the families of quarks and leptons and of the scalar and gauge fields, before and after each of the two successive breaks, bringing masses to fermions and to boson fields are analysed and relations among coherent contributions of the loop corrections to fermion properties discussed, including the one which enables the existence of the Majorana neutrinos. The relation of the scalar fields and mass matrices following from the {\em spin-charge-family} theory to the {\it standard model} Yukawa couplings and Higgs is discussed. Although effectively the scalar fields manifest as Higgs and Yukawas, measurements of the scalar fields do not coincide with the measurement of the Higgs.

How can the Standard model Higgs and also the extensions of the Higgs to Yukawa's scalars be interpreted in the spin-charge-family theory and to what predictions about the Higgs does this theory lead?

This contribution is to show how does the spin-charge-family theory interpret the assumptions of the standard model, and those extensions of this model, which are trying to see the Yukawa couplings as scalar fields with the family (flavour) charges in the fundamental representations of the group. The purpose of these contribution is i.) to try to understand why the standard model works so well, although its assumptions look quite artificial, and ii.) how do predictions of the spin-charge-family theory about the measurements of the scalar fields differ from predictions of the {\em standard model}, which has only one scalar field - the Higgs - and also from its more or less direct extensions with Yukawas as the scalar dynamical fields with the family charge in the fundamental or anti-fundamental representation of group.

Enhanced Bd --> mu+ mu- Decay: What if?

If the very rare $B_d^0 \to μ^+μ^-$ decay is enhanced to (3--4) $\times 10^{-10}$ level or higher, it can be discovered with existing 2011-2012 LHC data. It might then cast some doubt on the Higgs boson nature of the 126 GeV boson, since the likely explanation would be due to the fourth generation $t^\prime$ quark. There is a mild motivation from the known tension in $\sin2β/ϕ_1$. If discovery is made before the 13 TeV run, then the $b \to d$ quadrangle (modulo $m_{t'}$) would suddenly fall into our lap. Continued pursuit in future runs can probe below $3 \times 10^{-10}$.

Chiral Transition Within Effective Quark Models under Strong Magnetic Fields

In the recently years it has been argued that spectators in heavy ion collisions are responsible for creating a strong magnetic field that could play an important role in the QCD phase transition. In this work we use the SU(2) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in order to study the chiral transition in quark matter subject to a strong magnetic field. We show some results involving the breaking of chiral symmetry and its restoration at finite temperature and density.

On a relation between production processes and total cross sections

Perturbative QCD is the appropriate tool to describe many important properties of the inclusive observables measured at electron-proton (or ion) colliders, such as the energy dependence of the total cross sections in well-chosen kinematical regions. This is because the electron may effectively be replaced by its cloud of photons, whose virtualities provide a hard scale that enables perturbative expansions. At hadron colliders instead, there is no hard scale in the initial state. Therefore, the observables one may compute perturbatively involve the production of jets, and thus belong to a quite different class of observables. However, it turns out that there is a formal relation between production processes and total cross sections, enabling one to apply calculations of the latter to the former. We review this relation, and present our recent proof that it holds at next-to-leading order (in the BFKL sense).

Coupling constant for $Λ(1405)\bar{K}N$

The value of the $Λ(1405){\bar K}N$ coupling constant $g_{Λ(1405)\bar{K}N}$ is obtained by fitting it to the experimental data on the total cross sections of the $K^-p \to π^0Σ^0$ reaction. On the basis of an effective Lagrangian approach and isobar model, we show that the value $|g_{Λ(1405)\bar{K}N}| = 1.51 \pm 0.10$ could be extracted from the available experimental data by assuming that the $s-$channel $Λ(1405)$ resonance plays a dominant role, whereas, the background contributions from the $s-$channel $Λ(1115)$, $t-$channel $K^*$ and $u-$channel nucleon pole processes are small and can be neglected. However, the $u-$channel nucleon pole diagram may also give an important contribution in the present calculations. After the background contributions are taken into account, the above value of $g_{Λ(1405)\bar{K}N}$ is reduced to $|g_{Λ(1405)\bar{K}N}| = 0.77 \pm 0.07$, which is not supported by the previous calculations and the recent CLAS measurements. The theoretical calculations on differential cross sections are also presented, which can be checked by future experiments.
