ILC Positron Production Target Simulation

A photon-positron conversion target of the undulator or laser based polarized positron source is optimized using a modified GEANT-3 program adapted to count the spin transfer. High intensity positron beam with around 0.75 polarisation could be achieved choosing tungsten conversion target of 0.3 and 0.7 radiation lengths for the undulator and laser case respectively.

Powerful nanosecond light sources based on LEDs for astroparticle physics experiments

Powerful nanosecond light sources based on LEDs have been developed for use in astroparticle physics experiments. The light sources use either matrixes of ultra bright blue LEDs or a new generation high power blue LEDs. It's shown that such light sources have light yield of up to 10**10 - 10**12 photons per pulse with very fast light emission kinetics. The described light sources are important for use in calibration systems of Cherenkov and scintillator detectors. The developed light sources are currently used successfully in a number of astroparticle experiments, namely: the TUNKA EAS experiment, the Baikal neutrino experiment etc.

A LED Flasher for TUNKA experiment

A LED flasher has been developed for TUNKA-133 EAS Cherenkov detector. A blue ultra bright InGaN LED is used as a light source in the flasher. The flasher's driver is based on a fast discharge of a small capacitor via a complementary pair of fast RF transistors. The light yield of the flasher is adjusted in the wide range of from 0 to up to 10**9 photons per pulse. The results of studies of the flasher's amplitude and timing parameters and their stability are presented.

Muon Identification without Iron

Muons can be identified with high efficiency and purity and reconstructed with high precision is a detector with a dual readout calorimeter and a dual solenoid to return the flux without iron. We shown CERN test beam data for the calorimeter and calculations for the magnetic fields and the track reconstruction. For isolated tracks, the rejection of pions against muons ranges from $10^3$ at 20 GeV/c to $10^5$ at 300 GeV/c.

An experimental program for demonstrating precision jet energy measurement at the ILC

We outline a physics program at Fermilab that would significantly improve our ability to understand the behavior of hadronic showers in calorimeters. This would involve a two-pronged approach designed to measure particle production cross sections of hadronic beams on several nuclei to improve shower simulation programs and the validation of the improved shower simulation predictions using test beams (including tagged neutral beams) in which calorimeter modules built using various technologies are deployed in the test beam. Such a program would be of immediate benefit to the efforts to design and build optimal calorimeters for the International Linear Collider.

A MAPS-based Digital Electromagnetic Calorimeter for the ILC

A novel design for a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter is described, based on Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS). A test sensor with a pixel size of 50x50 um2 has been fabricated in July 2007. The simulation of the physical sensor is done using a detailed three-dimensional charge spread algorithm. Physics studies of the sensor are done including a digitisation algorithm taking into account the charge sharing, charge collection efficiency, noise, and dead areas. The influence of the charge sharing effect is found to be important and hence needs to be measured precisely.

Progress with Particle Flow Calorimetry

One of the most important requirements for a detector at the ILC is good jet energy resolution. It is widely believed that the particle flow approach to calorimetry is the key to achieving the ILC goal of a di-jet invariant mass resolution sigma_m/m < Gamma_Z/m_Z. This paper describes the current performance of the PandoraPFA particle flow algorithm. For simulated light quark jets in the Tesla TDR detector, the jet energy resolution achieved is better than sigma_E/E ~ 3.4% for jet energies in the range 45-250 GeV. This represents the first demonstration that Particle Flow Calorimetry can reach the ILC jet energy resolution goals.

Simulation of LiCAS Error Propagation

Linear Collider Alignment and Survey (LiCAS) R&D group is proposing a novel automated metrology instrument dedicated to align and monitor the mechanical stability of a future linear high energy e+e- collider. LiCAS uses Laser Straightness Monitors (LSM) and Frequency Scanning Interferometry (FSI) for straightness and absolute distance measurements, respectively. This paper presents detailed simulations of a LiCAS system operating inside a Rapid Tunnel Reference Surveyor (RTRS train). With the proposed design it is feasible to achieve the required vertical accuracy of the order of 200 micons over 600 m tunnel sections meeting the specification for the TESLA collider.

Calice Si-W EM Calorimeter: Preliminary Results of the Testbeams 2006

The CALICE Si-W electromagnetic calorimeter has been tested with electron beams (1 to 6 GeV) at DESY in May 2006, as well as electrons (6 to 45 GeV) and hadrons (6 to 80 GeV) at CERN in August and October 2006. Several millions of events have been taken at different incident angles and three beam impact positions. The ECAL calibration is performed with muon beams and shows a good uniformity for nearly all channels. The large statistics available allows not only to characterise the ECAL physics performance, but also to identify subtle hardware effects.

Intrinsic dissipation in cantilevers

We consider the effects of a velocity-independent friction force on cantilever damping. It is shown that this dissipation mechanism causes nonlinear effects in the cantilever vibrations. The size of the nonlinearity increases with decreasing cantilever velocity. Our analysis makes it possible to understand experiments [Stipe et al, PRL 87, 096801 (2001)] where an amplitude dependence of the cantilever eigenfrequency and anomalous dissipation was observed only at small amplitudes.

S-Parameter Uncertainties in Network Analyzer Measurements with Application to Antenna Patterns

An analytical method was developed, to estimate uncertainties in full two-port Vector Network Analyzer measurements, using total differentials of S-parameters. System error uncertainties were also estimated from total differentials involving two triples of standards, in the Direct Through connection case. Standard load uncertainties and measurement inaccuracies were represented by independent differentials. Complex uncertainty in any quantity, differentiably dependent on S-parameters, is estimated by the corresponding Differential Error Region. Real uncertainties, rectangular and polar, are estimated by the orthogonal parallelogram and annular sector circumscribed about the Differential Error Region, respectively. From the user's point of view, manufactures' data may be used to set the independent differentials and apply the method. Demonstration results include: (1) System error differentials for Short, matching Load and Open pairs of opposite sex standards; (2) System error uncertainties for VNA extended by two lengthy transmission lines of opposite sex end-connectors; (3) High uncertainties in Z-parameters against frequency of an appropriately designed, DC resistive, T-Network; (4) Moderate uncertainties in amplitude and phase patterns of a designed UHF radial discone antenna (azimuthally rotated by a built positioner, under developed software control of a built hardware controller) polarization coupled with a constructed gain standard antenna (stationary) into an anechoic chamber.

Test Stand Measurements for an ILC Polarimeter

The setup of two different small scale teststands for measurements regarding an electron Cherenkov detector as part of the ILC polarimeters is presented. Component measurements already carried out are analyzed and others, foreseen for the near future, are discussed. The larger one of the two teststands features the old Cherenkov detector of the SLD experiment, which will be used as a reference for a number of crucial measurements. Especially, the requirements for the non-linearity of the read-out chain are studied in greater detail and methods for its precise measurement before and during operation are being developed accordingly.

Absolute Momentum Calibration of the HARP TPC

In the HARP experiment the large-angle spectrometer is using a cylindrical TPC as main tracking and particle identification detector. The momentum scale of reconstructed tracks in the TPC is the most important systematic error for the majority of kinematic bins used for the HARP measurements of the double-differential production cross-section of charged pions in proton interactions on nuclear targets at large angle. The HARP TPC operated with a number of hardware shortfalls and operational mistakes. Thus it was important to control and characterize its momentum calibration. While it was not possible to enter a direct particle beam into the sensitive volume of the TPC to calibrate the detector, a set of physical processes and detector properties were exploited to achieve a precise calibration of the apparatus. In the following we recall the main issues concerning the momentum measurement in the HARP TPC, and describe the cross-checks made to validate the momentum scale. As a conclusion, this analysis demonstrates that the measurement of momentum is correct within the published precision of 3%.

Resolution Studies of GEM/Timepix Detector with 5 GeV electrons

This contribution investigates a prototype of a TPC readout with a highly pixelated CMOS ASIC, which is an option for charged particles tracking of the ILC. A triple GEM stack was joined with a TimePix and MediPix2 chip (pixel size of 55$\times$55 $\mu m^2$) and its readout properties were investigated with 5 GeV electrons. The spatial resolution of the cluster center reconstruction was determined as a function of drift distance using different cluster alhoritms and compared with Monte Carlo predictions.

Simulation Studies and Detector Scenarios for an ILC Polarimeter

High energy longitudinal electron polarimetry will be based on Compton scattering for the International Linear Collider. An unobtrusive measurement has to include a magnet chicane setup serving as a spectrometer. Current proposals make use of Cerenkov detectors for electron detection. A fast simulation has been developed to study the basic properties of scenarios for the polarimeter setup.
