Cooperation of anti-aligning and aligning shell-model forces for N=Z

For two neutrons and two protons or two neutron holes and two proton holes in a single j-shell, the state |phi> with isospin and seniority zero and the lowest angular momentum zero state |chi> produced by an attractive interaction of quasinucleon pairs with angular momentum 2j have a large overlap for all relevant j and large contents of quasinucleon pairs with angular momenta 2j and 0, respectively. In the 1f7/2 and 1g9/2 shells, the large negative matrix elements of the effective interaction in these two channels relative to most of the rest therefore_cooperate_ to produce a ground state which is essentially a linear combination of |phi> and |chi> with comparable coefficients. Interaction matrix elements in other channels influence significantly the_ratio_ of these coefficients. The state |phi> makes up about 80 % of the calculated ground states. The overlaps of the latter with |chi> are_less_ in the 1g9/2 shell than in the 1f7/2 shell.

Elliptic flow of thermal photons from event-by-event hydrodynamic model

Elliptic flow of direct photons in relativistic heavy ion collisions is believed to be dominated by contribution from thermal radiation of quark gluon plasma up to $p_T$ $\sim 5$ GeV/$c$, although other sources start outshining the thermal contribution at already smaller values of $p_T$ in the direct photon spectrum. The elliptic flow of thermal photons from ideal hydrodynamics considering a smooth initial density distribution under-predicts the PHENIX direct photon data from 200A GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC by a large margin in the range $1 < p_T < 5$ GeV/$c$. However, a significant enhancement of thermal photon production due to fluctuations in the initial QCD matter density distributions is expected. We show that such fluctuations result in substantially larger photon elliptic flow for $p_T > 2.5 $ GeV/$c$ compared to a smooth initial-state-averaged density profile. The results from event-by-event hydrodynamics are found to be sensitive to the fluctuation size parameter. However, the effects of initial state fluctuations are insufficient to account for the discrepancy to the PHENIX data for direct photon elliptic flow. Furthermore, the photon $v_2$ is reduced even more when we include the NLO pQCD prompt photon component. We also calculate the spectra and elliptic flow of thermal photons for 2.76A TeV Pb+Pb collisions at LHC and for the 0--40% centrality bin. Thermal photons from event-by-event hydrodynamics along with prompt photons from NLO pQCD calculations explain the ALICE preliminary direct photon data well in the region $p_T \ge 2.5$ GeV/c. Similar to RHIC, the elliptic flow results at LHC are again found to be much smaller than the ALICE preliminary $v_2$ data.

Photon elliptic flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions: hadronic versus partonic sources

We study the transverse momentum spectrum and the elliptic flow v2 of photons produced in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV using the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach. As sources for photon production, we incorporate the interactions of off-shell quarks and gluons in the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (q+qbar->g+gamma and q/qbar+g->q/qbar+gamma), the decays of hadrons (pi->gamma+gamma, eta->gamma+gamma, omega->pi+gamma, eta'->rho+gamma, phi->eta+gamma, a_1->pi+gamma) as well as their interactions (pi+pi->rho+gamma, rho+pi->pi+gamma, bremsstrahlung m+m->m+m+gamma). The PHSD calculations reproduce the transverse momentum spectrum, the effective temperature T_eff and the elliptic flow v2 of both inclusive and direct photons as measured by the PHENIX Collaboration. The photons produced in the QGP contribute slightly less then 50% to the observed spectrum, but have small v2. We find that the large direct photon v2 - comparable to that of hadrons - can be attributed to the intermediate hadronic scattering channels not subtracted from the data when following the same extraction procedure for v2 as in the PHENIX experiment. On the other hand the v2 of direct photons - as evaluated by the weighted average of direct photon channels - gives a lower signal. The difference between the two extraction procedures for the direct photon v2 can be attributed to different definitions for the yield ratio of direct photons to the background photons. The QGP phase causes the strong elliptic flow of photons indirectly, by enhancing the v2 of final hadrons due to the partonic interaction in terms of explicit parton collisions and the mean-field potentials. We also show that the presence of the QGP radiation is manifest in the slope of the direct photon spectrum, leading to a slope parameter T_eff far above the critical temperature for the deconfinement phase transition.

Chiral soliton model at finite temperature and density

In mean field approximation, we study a chiral soliton of the linear sigma model with two flavors at finite temperature and density. The stable soliton solutions are calculated with some appropriate boundary conditions. Energy and radius of the soliton are determined in a hot medium of constituent quarks. It is found that for $T T_c$, there is a sharp delocalization phase transition from hadron matter to quark matter coincident with the restoration of chiral symmetry. In the transition region, the thermodynamic properties show large discontinuities which is an indication for a first-order phase transition.

Partial-wave analysis of $\bar K N$ scattering reactions

We investigate the two-body reactions $\bar K N\rightarrow \bar K N$, $\bar K N\rightarrow πΛ$, and $\bar K N\rightarrow πΣ$ via single-energy partial-wave analyses in the c.m.\ energy range 1480 to 2100 MeV. The partial-wave amplitudes for these reactions thus extracted were constrained by a multichannel energy-dependent model satisfying unitarity of the partial-wave $S$-matrix. We obtain excellent predictions of differential cross sections, polarizations, polarized cross sections, and cross sections for these reactions from a global energy-dependent solution.

Multichannel parametrization of $\bar K N$ scattering amplitudes and extraction of resonance parameters

We present results of a new multichannel partial-wave analysis for $\bar K N$ scattering in the c.m.\ energy range 1480 to 2100 MeV. Resonance parameters were extracted by fitting partial-wave amplitudes from all considered channels using a multichannel parametrization that is consistent with $S$-matrix unitarity. The resonance parameters are generally in good agreement with predictions of the Koniuk-Isgur quark model.

Nucleon resonances within a dynamical coupled-channels model of pi N and gamma N reactions

The nucleon resonances are investigated within a dynamical coupled-channels model of pi N and gamma N reactions up to the invariant mass W = 2 GeV. The meson-baryon (MB) channels included in the calculations are MB = pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma, and pi pi N that has pi Delta, rho N, and sigma N resonant components. The meson-baryon amplitudes T_{M'B',MB}(W) are calculated from solving a set of coupled-channels integral equations defined by an interaction Hamiltonian consisting of (a) meson-exchange interactions v_{M'B',MB} derived from phenomenological Lagrangian, and (b) vertex interactions N* --> MB for describing the transition of a bare excited nucleon state N* to a channel MB. The parameters of v_{M'B',MB} are mainly constrained by the fit to the data of pi N --> pi N in the low energy region up to W =1.4 GeV. The bare masses of N* and the N* --> MB parameters are then determined in simultaneous fits to the data of pi N --> pi N up to W =2.3 GeV and those of pi N --> eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma and gamma N --> pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma up to W = 2.1 GeV. The pole positions and residues of nucleon resonances are extracted by analytically continuing the meson-baryon amplitudes T_{M'B',MB}(W) to the complex Riemann energy surface. From the extracted residues, we have determined the N* --> pi N, gamma N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma transition amplitudes at resonance poles. We compare the resonance pole positions from our analysis with those given by Particle Data Group and the recent coupled-channels analyses by the Juelich and Bonn-Gatchina groups. Four results agree well only for the first N* in each spin-parity-isospin (J^P,I) channel. For higher mass states, the number of states and their resonance positions from four results do not agree well. We discuss the possible sources of the discrepancies and the need of additional data from new hadron facilities such as J-PARC.

Suppression of Excited-State Contributions to Stellar Reaction Rates

It has been shown in previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 191101 (2008); Phys. Rev. C 80, 035801 (2009)] that a suppression of the stellar enhancement factor (SEF) occurs in some endothermic reactions at and far from stability. This effect is re-evaluated using the ground-state contributions to the stellar reaction rates, which were shown to be better suited to judge the importance of excited state contributions than the previously applied SEFs. An update of the tables shown in Phys. Rev. C 80, 035801 (2009) is given. The new evalution finds 2350 cases (out of a full set of 57513 reactions) for which the ground-state contribution is larger in the reaction direction with negative reaction Q-value than in the exothermic direction, thus providing exceptions to the commonly applied Q-value rule. The results confirm the Coulomb suppression effect but lead to a larger number of exceptions than previously found. This is due to the fact that often a large variation in the g.s. contribution does not lead to a sizeable change in the SEF. On the other hand, several previously identified cases do not appear anymore because it is found that their g.s. contribution is smaller than inferred from the SEF.

Reaction mechanism in odd-even staggering of reaction cross sections

It was recently suggested that the odd-even staggering of reaction cross sections is an evidence of the pair- ing anti-halo effect on projectile radii. We define the dimensionless staggering parameters, Γrds and ΓR, for projectile radii and reaction cross sections, respectively, and analyze the relation between Γrds and ΓR for the scattering of 14,15,16C from a 12C target at 83 MeV/A by taking account of projectile-breakup and nuclear- medium effects newly with the microscopic version of the continuum discretized coupled-channels method. The value of ΓR is deviated from that of Γrds by the projectile-breakup effect, the nuclear-medium effect and an effect due to the fact that the scattering are not the black-sphere scattering (BSS) exactly. The projectile-breakup and nuclear medium effects are nearly canceled for ΓR. The remaining non-BSS effect becomes small as an incident energy decreases, indicating that nucleus-nucleus scattering at lower incident energies are a good probe of evaluating Γrds from measured reaction cross sections.

Impact of the Nuclear Modification of the Gluon Densities on J/Psi production in pPb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 5 TeV

We update our previous studies of nuclear-matter effects on J/Psi production in proton-nucleus for the recent LHC pPb runs at sqrt(s_NN)=5 TeV. We have analysed the effects of the modification of the gluon PDFs in nucleus, using an exact kinematics for a 2->2 process, namely g+g->J/Psi+g as expected from LO pQCD. This allows to constrain the transverse-momentum while computing the nuclear modification factor for different rapidities, unlike with the usual simplified kinematics. Owing to the absence of measurement in pp collisions at the same sqrt(s_NN) and owing to the expected significant uncertainties in yield interpolations which would hinder definite interpretations of nuclear modification factor --R_pPb--, we have derived forward-to-backward and central-to-peripheral yield ratios in which the unknown proton-proton yield cancel. These have been computed without and with a transverse-momentum cut, e.g. to comply with the ATLAS and CMS constraints in the central-rapidity region.

Effective field theory for collective rotations and vibrations of triaxially deformed nuclei

The effective field theory (EFT) for triaxially deformed even-even nuclei is generalized to include the vibrational degrees of freedom. The pertinent Hamiltonian is constructed up to next-to-leading order. The leading order part describes the vibrational motion, and the NLO part couples rotations to vibrations. The applicability of the EFT Hamiltonian is examined through the description of the energy spectra of the ground state bands, $γ$-bands, and $K=4$ bands in the $^{108, 110, 112}$Ru isotopes. It is found that by taking into account the vibrational degrees of freedom, the deviations for high-spin states in the $γ$-band observed in the EFT with only rotational degrees of freedom disappear. This supports the importance of including vibrational degrees of freedom in the EFT formulation for the collective motion of triaxially deformed nuclei.

Pseudorapidity distribution and decorrelation of anisotropic flow within CLVisc hydrodynamics

Studies of fluctuations and correlations of soft hadrons and hard and electromagnetic probes of the dense and strongly interacting medium require event-by-event hydrodynamic simulations of high-energy heavy-ion collisions that are computing intensive. We develop a (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model -- CLVisc that is parallelized on Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) using Open Computing Language (OpenCL) with 60 times performance increase for space-time evolution and more than 120 times for the Cooper-Frye particlization relative to that without GPU parallelization. The pseudo-rapidity dependence of anisotropic flow $v_n(η)$ are then computed in CLVisc with initial conditions given by the A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model, with energy density fluctuations both in the transverse plane and along the longitudinal direction. Although the magnitude of $v_n(η)$ and the ratios between $v_2(η)$ and $v_3(η)$ are sensitive to the effective shear viscosity over entropy density ratio $η_v/s$, the shape of the $v_{n}(η)$ distributions in $η$ do not depend on the value of $η_v/s$. The decorrelation of $v_n$ along the pseudo-rapidity direction due to the twist and fluctuation of the event-planes in the initial parton density distributions is also studied. The decorrelation observable $r_n(η^a, η^b)$ between $v_n\{-η^a\}$ and $v_n\{η^a\}$ with the auxiliary reference window $η^b$ is found not sensitive to $η_v/s$ when there is no initial fluid velocity. For small $η_v/s$, the initial fluid velocity from mini-jet partons introduces sizable splitting of $r_n(η^a, η^b)$ between the two reference rapidity windows $η^b \in [3, 4]$ and $η^b \in [4.4, 5.0]$, as has been observed in experiment. The implementation of CLVisc and guidelines on how to efficiently parallelize scientific programs on GPUs are also provided.

Nuclear EMC effect through $\barΛ/Λ$ production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering processes

We calculate $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hadron production cross sections in charged lepton semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off nuclear target ($A$, using iron $\mathrm{Fe}$ as an example) and deuteron ($D$) target. The results show that the ratio $(\barΛ^{A}/Λ^{A})/(\barΛ^{D}/Λ^{D})$ is sensitive to the sea quark content of the nucleus. We adopt three different models to take the nuclear EMC effect into account. The ratio $(\barΛ^{A}/Λ^{A})/(\barΛ^{D}/Λ^{D})$ is predicted to be different by these different models.

On critical scaling at the QCD N_f=2 chiral phase transition

We investigate the critical scaling of the quark propagator of N_f=2 QCD close to the chiral phase transition at finite temperature. We argue that it is mandatory to take into account the back-reaction effects of pions and the sigma onto the quark to observe critical behavior beyond mean field. On condition of self-consistency of the quark Dyson-Schwinger equation we extract the scaling behavior for the quark propagator analytically. Crucial in this respect is the correct pion dispersion relation when the critical temperature is approached from below. Our results are consistent with the known relations for the quark condensate and the pion decay constant from universality. We verify the analytical findings also numerically assuming the critical dispersion relation for the Goldstone bosons.

A Higgs Quadruplet for Type III Seesaw and Implications for $μ\to eγ$ and $μ- e$ Conversion

In Type III seesaw model the heavy neutrinos are contained in leptonic triplet representations. The Yukawa couplings of the triplet fermion and the left-handed neutrinos with the doublet Higgs field produce the Dirac mass terms. Together with the Majorana masses for the leptonic triplets, the light neutrinos obtain non-zero seesaw masses. We point out that it is also possible to have a quadruplet Higgs field to produce the Dirac mass terms to facilitate the seesaw mechanism. The vacuum expectation value of the quadruplet Higgs is constrained to be small by electroweak precision data. Therefore the Yukawa couplings of a quadruplet can be much larger than those for a doublet. We also find that unlike the usual Type III seesaw model where at least two copies of leptonic triplets are needed, with both doublet and quadruplet Higgs representations, just one leptonic triplet is possible to have a phenomenologically acceptable model because light neutrino masses can receive sizable contributions at both tree and one loop levels. Large Yukawa couplings of the quadruplet can induce observable effects for lepton flavor violating processes $μ\to e γ$ and $μ- e$ conversion. Implications of the recent $μ\to eγ$ limit from MEG and also limit on $μ- e $ conversion on Au are also given. Some interesting collider signatures for the doubly charged Higgs boson in the quadruplet are discussed.

Model independent determination of the axial mass parameter in quasielastic neutrino-nucleon scattering

Quasielastic neutrino-nucleon scattering is a basic signal process for neutrino oscillation studies. At accelerator energies, the corresponding cross section is subject to significant uncertainty due to the poorly constrained axial-vector form factor of the nucleon. A model-independent description of the axial-vector form factor is presented. Data from the MiniBooNE experiment for quasielastic neutrino scattering on carbon are analyzed under the assumption of a definite nuclear model. The value of the axial mass parameter, m_A=0.85^{+0.22}_{-0.07} +/- 0.09 GeV, is found to differ significantly from extractions based on traditional form factor models. Implications for future neutrino scattering and pion electroproduction measurements are discussed.

Next-to leading order analysis of target mass corrections to structure functions and asymmetries

We perform a comprehensive analysis of target mass corrections (TMCs) to spin-averaged structure functions and asymmetries at next-to-leading order. Several different prescriptions for TMCs are considered, including the operator product expansion, and various approximations to it, collinear factorization, and xi-scaling. We assess the impact of each of these on a number of observables, such as the neutron to proton F_2 structure function ratio, and parity-violating electron scattering asymmetries for protons and deuterons which are sensitive to gamma-Z interference effects. The corrections from higher order radiative and nuclear effects on the parity-violating deuteron asymmetry are also quantified.

Large-Nc Properties of the rho and f0(600) Mesons from Unitary Resonance Chiral Dynamics

We construct pi-pi amplitudes that fulfill exact elastic unitarity, account for one loop Chiral Perturbation Theory contributions and include all 1/Nc leading terms, with the only limitation of considering just the lowest-lying nonet of exchanged resonances. Within such scheme, the Nc dependence of sigma and rho masses and widths is discussed. Robust conclusions are drawn in the case of the rho resonance, confirming that it is a stable meson in the limit of a large number of QCD colors, Nc. Less definitive conclusions are reached in the scalar-isoscalar sector. With the present quality of data, we cannot firmly conclude whether or not the Nc=3 f0(600) resonance completely disappears at large Nc or it has a sub-dominant component in its structure, which would become dominant for a number of quark colors sufficiently large.
