Transient processes in disordered semiconductor structures under dispersive transport conditions: Fractional calculus approach

We continue to develop a new approach to description of charge kinetics in disordered semiconductors. It is based on fractional diffusion equations. This article is devoted to transient processes in structures under dispersive transport conditions. We demonstrate that this approach allows us (i) to take into account energetic and topological types of disorder in common, (ii) to consider transport in samples with spatial distributions of localized states, and (iii) to describe transport in non-homogeneous materials with distributed dispersion parameter. Using fractional approach provides some specifications in interpretation of time-of-flight experiments in disordered semiconductors.

Angular Distribution of Electrons in Photoionization of Atoms Adsorbed on a Graphene Sheet

Within the framework of a model representing the potential of a graphene sheet U(z) as an electro-neutral layer formed by smeared carbon atoms, the effect of this potential on spectral characteristics of atoms adsorbed on a graphene sheet has been studied. Since the distance between the adsorbed atom nucleus and sheet surface significantly exceeds the radii of inner atomic shells the potential U(z) makes influence on the continuum wave functions only. Their behavior in the upper semi-space (z>0) and in the lower one (z<0) where the adsorbed atom is located is defined by a jump of the logarithmic derivative of the wave function for z=0. The photoelectron angular distributions have been calculated for different mutual positions of the polarization vector e and the axis Z normal to the sheet surface. It has been shown that the existence of the electron waves reflected from the potential U(z) leads to evident asymmetry of the angular distribution relative to the plane z=0. The experimental observation of this effect is of great interest for photoelectron spectroscopy of atoms localized on graphene structures.

Spin snake states with spin-orbit and Zeeman interactions in an inhomogeneous magnetic field

We study the spin edge states, induced by the combined effect of Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit, Zeeman interactions and inhomogeneous magnetic field, exposed perpendicularly to two-dimensional electron systems. We calculate analytically the spectrum of the spin edge states (the spin snakes orbits) in systems where the magnetic field exhibits a discontinuous jump in the transverse direction and changes its sign at the magnetic interface. The obtained magnetic spin edge states in a 2DES exhibit several interesting properties: in particular, electrons reverse their propagation direction at finite values of their momentum.

Phase Transition to Insulating State from Quantum Hall State by Current-Induced Nuclear Spin Polarization

We investigate the resistance enhancement state (RES) where the magnetoresistance of the $ν= 2/3$ fractional quantum Hall state (FQHS) is increased with dynamic nuclear spin polarization (DNP) induced by a large electric current. After inducing DNP, we measure the temperature dependence of the magnetoresistance by a small current over a short period of time. We find that the FQHS makes a phase transition to an insulating state. By measuring the Hall resistance in the insulating state, we find that the RES exhibits a quantized Hall resistance. We discuss the RES in association with the Anderson localization.

Fluctuation theorem for quantum electron transport in mesoscopic circuits

We study the statistical properties of currents in two particular systems of capacitively coupled parallel transport channels. In the first system, each transport channel contains a single quantum dot in contact with two electron reservoirs. The second system we study is constituted of a double quantum dot coupled to two electrodes and probed by a quantum point contact detector. Thermodynamic forces are applied to each transport channel that generate fluctuating stationary currents. The full counting statistics of the currents is obtained starting from a microscopic Hamiltonian describing the electron dynamics. We verify that the joined probability distribution of the currents in each channel satisfies a fluctuation theorem in the long-time limit. The issue of single-current fluctuation theorems for the marginal distribution of the currents in one of the two channels is also investigated. We show that in the limit of large current ratio between both channels, a single-current fluctuation theorem is satisfied individually for the slower circuit in agreement with experimental observations. This theorem involves an effective affinity which depends on the thermodynamic forces applied to both channels and the specific features of the system considered. A detailed study of the effective affinity is made for the two aforementioned systems. Besides, we introduce a criteria on the initial condition of the transport channels for the observation of a fluctuation theorem at any time. This criteria is extended to the case of single-current fluctuation theorems. Finally, we perform the nonequilibrium thermodynamic analysis of a double quantum dot probed by a quantum point contact in the presence of temperature and chemical potential differences between the electrodes. A thermal machine is studied and shown to reach highest efficiencies at maximum power by fine tuning the double quantum dot spectrum.

Aharonov-Bohm resistance magneto-oscillations on single-nanohole graphite and graphene structures

Graphene is a stable single atomic layer material exhibiting two-dimensional electron gas of massless Dirac fermions of high mobility. One of the intriguing properties of graphene is a possibility of realization of the Tamm-type edge states. These states differ from the usual surface states caused by defects, impurities and other imperfections at the edge of the system, as well as they differ from the magnetic edge states caused by skipping cyclotron orbits. The Tamm states result from breaking of periodic crystal potential at the edge, they can exist even at zero magnetic field and form a conducting band. Until recently those states have been observed in graphene only by local STM technique and there were no direct experiments on their contribution to transport measurements. Here we present the experiments on Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations of resistance in a single-nanohole graphite and graphene structures, it indicates the presence of conducting edge states cycling around nanohole. An estimation show the penetration depth of the edge states to be as short as about 2 nm. The oscillations persist up to temperature T=115 K and the T-range of their existence increases with a decrease of the nanohole diameter. The proposed mechanism of the AB oscillations based on the resonant intervalley backscattering of the Dirac fermions by the nanohole via the Tamm states. The experimental results are consistent with such a scenario. Our findings show a way towards interference devices operating at high temperatures on the edge states in graphene

Long-lived heteronuclear spin-singlet states

We report observation of long-lived spin-singlet states in a 13C-1H spin pair at zero magnetic field. In 13C-labeled formic acid, we observe spin-singlet lifetimes as long as 37 seconds, about a factor of three longer than the T1 lifetime of dipole polarization in the triplet state. We also observe that the lifetime of the singlet-triplet coherence, T2, is longer than T1. Moreover, we demonstrate that this singlet states formed by spins of a heteronucleus and a 1H nucleus, can exhibit longer lifetimes than the respective triplet states in systems consisting of more than two nuclear spins. Although long-lived homonuclear spin-singlet states have been extensively studied, this is the first experimental observation of analogous spin-singlets consisting of a heteronucleus and a proton.

Aharonov-Bohm phase-driven resonant tunneling of interacting electrons in magnetopolaronic Majorana-Resonant-Level Model

The magnetopolaronic generalization of a Majorana-resonant-level (-MRL) model is considered for a single-level vibrating quantum dot symmetrically coupled to two half-infinite $g=1/2$- Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (-TLL) leads at the Toulouse point. At the resonance by gate voltage the exact solution for the effective transmission coefficient is obtained in the whole range of magnetopolaronic coupling constant values. The obtained exact solution exists due to special Majorana-like symmetry of tunnel Hamiltonian and gives rise to nontrivial interference between different virtual vibronic channels of resonant tunneling with different fixed Aharonov-Bohm phases. This fact leads to a novel topologically nontrivial type of resonant Andreev-like magnetopolaronic tunneling in the system. As the result, in the zero-temperature limit, it is impossible to compensate the magnetopolaronic blockade in magnetopolaronic MRL-model by means of bias voltage, if vibron energy is the smallest (but nonzero) energy parameter in the system.

Magneto-thermoelectric current induced by phonon drag in low-dimensional junctions

We examine splitting the heat flow in a low-dimensional junction under influence an external d.c. magnetic field. The junction is a crossing between the narrow single atomic layer stripe (or a nanotube) of a semiconductor C with a metal stripe N (C/N-knot). External source of heat injects the non-equilibrium (NE) phonons, electrons, and holes into C which then propagate in direction the C/N-knot. Most of the heat is carried by NE phonons which drag additional electron and hole excitations along C. In vicinity the C/N-knot, the Lorentz force pulls the charge carriers from C to N thus inducing a substantial lateral magneto-thermoelectric electric current (MTEC) along N.

Coulomb gap refrigerator

We propose a remarkably simple electronic refrigerator based on the Coulomb barrier for single-electron tunneling. A fully normal single-electron transistor is voltage $V$ biased at a gate position such that tunneling through one of the junctions costs an energy of about $k_BT \ll eV, E_C$, where $T$ is the temperature and $E_C$ is the transistor charging energy. The tunneling in the junction with positive energy cost cools both the electrodes attached to it. Immediate practical realizations of such a refrigerator make use of Andreev mirrors which suppress heat current while maintaining full electric contact.

Dimensionality driven charge density wave instability in TiS$_2$

Density functional theory and density functional perturbation theory are used to investigate the electronic and vibrational properties of TiS$_2$. Within the local density approximation the material is a semi-metal both in the bulk and in the monolayer form. Most interestingly we observe a Kohn anomaly in the bulk phonon dispersion, which turns into a charge density wave instability when TiS$_2$ is thinned to less than four monolayers. Such charge density wave phase can be tuned by compressive strain, which appears to be the control parameter of the instability.

If graphynes turn into graphene: the thermal stability study

The thermal stability of $α$-, $β$-, 6,6,12-graphyne and graphdiyne was studied by a statistic model, which was seriously tested by classical molecular dynamics simulations. By first-principles calculations of related potential energy curves, the model predicts that all the lifetime of free-standing single layer graphynes considered is more than 10$^{44}$ years at room temperature. When the temperature gets up to 1000 K, they are still very stable, but quickly turn into graphene if the temperature is about 2000 K

Optical Asymmetry Induced by PT-symmetric Nonlinear Fano Resonances

We introduce a new type of Fano resonances, realized in a photonic circuit which consists of two nonlinear PT-symmetric micro-resonators side-coupled to a waveguide, which have line-shape and resonance position that depends on the direction of the incident light. We utilize these features in order to induce asymmetric transport up to 47 dBs in the optical C-window. Our set-up requires low input power and does not compromise the power and frequency characteristics of the output signal.

Chargeless spin current for switching and coupling of domain walls in magnetic nanowires

The demonstration of the generation and control of a pure spin current (without net charge flow) by electric fields and/or temperature gradient has been an essential leap in the quest for low-power consumption electronics. The key issue of whether and how such a current can be utilized to drive and control information stored in magnetic domain walls (DWs) is still outstanding and is addressed here. We demonstrate that pure spin current acts on DWs in a magnetic stripe with an effective spin-transfer torque resulting in a mutual DWs separation dynamics and picosecond magnetization reversal. In addition, long-range ($\sim$ mm) antiferromagnetic DWs coupling emerges. If one DW is pinned by geometric constriction, the spin current induces a dynamical spin orbital interaction that triggers an internal electric field determined by $\vec{E} \sim \hat{e}_{x} \cdot (\vec{n}_{1} \times \vec{n}_{2})$ where $\vec{n}_{1/2}$ are the effective DWs orientations and $\hat{e}_{x} $ is their spatial separation vector. This leads to charge accumulation or persistent electric current in the wire. As DWs are routinely realizable and tuneable, the predicted effects bear genuine potential for power-saving spintronics devices.

Localization in the ground state of a triple quantum well

A model is presented, consisting of a single structureless particle on the line subject to a potential with three minima, with an exactly soluble ground level. In this model the ground level probability density becomes more sensitive to the global shape of the potential as the distance between the minima increases, so that for big enough distances small variations in the potential bring a qualitative change in the probability density, taking it from a unimodal, localized, distribution, to a bimodal one. We conjecture that this effect, of which we have not found any precedent in the literature, may be relevant in the design and characterization of mesoscopic devices such as triple quantum well systems.

Optically-driven nuclear-spin-selective Rabi oscillations of single electron spins in diamond

Optically-driven Rabi oscillations of single electron spins in a diamond nitrogen vacancy center are realized with two Raman-resonant optical pulses that are detuned from the respective dipole optical transitions. The Rabi oscillations are nuclear-spin selective and are robust against rapid decoherence of the underlying optical transitions, opening the door to generating phonon-mediated spin entanglement in an optically-driven spin-phonon system. A direct comparison between the Rabi oscillations and simulated Raman adiabatic passage along with a detailed theoretical analysis provide a wealth of information on the coherent spin dynamics and in particular reveal that decoherence and environmental fluctuations associated with the optical transitions affect the fidelity of the Rabi oscillations through relatively large jumps in the transition frequencies.

Interplay of Rashba/Dresselhaus spin splittings

The paper reviews the interplay of Rashba/Dresselhaus spin splittings in various two dimensional systems made of III-V, wurtzite and SiGe. We discuss the symmetry aspects of the linear and cubic in electron wavevector spin splitting in heterostructures prepared on (001)-, (110)-, (111)-, (113)-, (112)-, and (013)-oriented substrates and address the requirements for suppression of spin relaxation and realization of the persistent spin helix state. In experimental part of the paper we overview experimental results on the interplay of Rashba/Dresselhaus spin splittings probed by photogalvanic spectroscopy: the method based on the phenomenological equivalence of the linear-in-wavevector spin splitting and several photogalvanic phenomena.
