Top-down Beyond the Standard Model Review

The recent discovery of the Standard Model boson (SMS) and direct searches place new constraints and a new perspective on New Physics models. I mostly review supersymmetric model building, with special emphasizes on predictions of flavor models on superpartner spectra and inverted hierarchy models, mini-split models, very low-scale supersymmetry breaking predictions and some string theory inspired low-energy spectra.

Naturalness, Supersymmetry and Light Higgsinos: A Snowmass Whitepaper

We show that the electroweak fine-tuning parameter Δ_{\rm EW} derived from the well-known electroweak symmetry breaking condition written in terms of weak scale parameters leads to {\it a bound on fine-tuning in the MSSM} and explain its utility for phenomenological analyses. We argue that a small magnitude of the mu parameter, and the concomitant presence of light higgsinos, is the most basic consequence of naturalness in SUSY models, and list the resulting implications of this for experiments at the LHC and at future e^+e^- colliders.

The Sterile Neutrino Field and Late Time Acceleration

We show that when the neutrino minimal standard model ($νMSM$) with a light sterile neutrino has a long range interaction between the neutrino vacuum charge density and a dark U(1) gauge potential, late time acceleration is dynamically realized. Moreover, the relation between the scale of dark energy, the weak and Planck masses derived by Arkani-Hamed et. al \cite{ArkaniHamed:2000tc} that addresses the coincidence problem arises naturally in this model. Assuming that the cosmological constant is zero by some as yet known mechanism, the only fine tuning in our model is the mass of the sterile neutrino. We show that perturbations of the vector fields are oscillatory and hence, there are no instabilities.

Implications of mixed axion/neutralino dark matter for the Cosmic Frontier: a Snowmass whitepaper

If one simultaneously invokes the SUSY solution to the gauge hierarchy problem and the PQ solution to the strong CP problem, then one might expect mixed axion/neutralino dark matter (DM), i.e. two dark matter particles. In this case, dark matter production involves oscillation production of axions, thermal and non-thermal neutralino production and thermal and non-thermal production of axinos and saxions. The latter particles may feed additional neutralinos into the cosmic soup, or dilute all relics via additional entropy production, or feed dark radiation into the cosmos. Depending on the SUSY and PQ model, the PQ scale can easily exist from 10^9-10^{16} GeV. Axions may lie well beyond the range currently being probed by experiment. In the case of relic WIMPs, theoretical predictions must be rescaled for the possibility that WIMPs only comprise a fraction of the local DM abundance.

Signs of Susy

This doctoral thesis addresses aspects of Supersymmetry (Susy) phenomenology. In addition to previously published work, it contains introductions to the following topics: from classical mechanics to quantum field theory for the more casual reader, electroweak naturalness, the Higgs as a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson, the MSSM and NMSSM, simple and less simple models of gauge-mediated Susy breaking (GMSB), collider searches for Susy and other new theories, transverse mass observables with missing energy, and Brazil-band plots. The previously published work is as follows. The optimally natural Higgs-stop sector in the MSSM in light of the 2012 discovery of a Higgs boson is derived, namely that of almost maximal mixing, with the scalar top partners almost as light as can be. The discovery is also interpreted numerically in the NMSSM, with greater emphasis placed on the visibility of the Higgs boson at the observed mass, i.e. on signal strengths. I investigate the role played by the mediation scale of GMSB: this is found to be as a control of the extent to which Yukawa couplings de-tune flavour-blind relations set by gauge couplings. Finally, issues relating to the discovery or exclusion of Susy at colliders are discussed. Bounds are derived for the masses of new particles from LHC searches for excesses of jets and missing energy without leptons, and compared to constraints arising from Higgs boson searches, for models of GMSB and the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. I present a novel search strategy for new physics signatures with two neutral, stable particles, when such particles are produced by boosted decays. (Susy motivations include models with light gravitinos, pseudo-goldstinos, singlinos or new photinos.) The method is shown to produce sharp mass peaks that enhance the visibility of the signal, with mass reconstruction to 5% from O(100) events.

Distinguishing the Color Octet Axial-Vector-like Particle for Top Quark Asymmetry via Color Flow Method at the LHC

The excess in top quark forward-backward asymmetry has been a hot topic in recent years. Although there are many proposals to explain it, most of them can not fit the differential distributions well. The color octet axial-vector like particle, with mass near the top quark pair threshold, is still a good description of the differential distributions. We study how to distinguish the color singlet and octet mediating particles in top quark pair production by adopting the color flow method. For the first time, we show that such a proposal for the froward-backward asymmetry can be cross-checked indirectly at the LHC.

130 GeV Gamma Ray Signal in NMSSM by Internal Bremsstrahlung

There is a possible γ-ray signal at 130 GeV coming from the Galactic Center as seen by Fermi-LAT experiment. We give a SUSY dark matter model to explain this γ-ray feature in NMSSM. We show that in NMSSM, one can have a benchmark set in which the γ-ray signal arises from final state γ's in the $χχ\to f \bar f γ$ annihilation of a 130 GeV bino dark matter requiring a boost factor of ~590 to fit the γ-ray signal. In addition, this benchmark set also gives the correct relic density, lightest Higgs mass of 125 GeV and is consistent with constraints on SUSY from LHC. This dark matter model evades the XENON100 constraint but is testable in a future XENON1T experiment.

Searching for GeV-scale new Gauge Bosons in QGP thermal dilepton production

In this paper we propose to use the measurement of the thermal Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) dilepton spectra in the Intermediate Mass Region (IMR) of heavy-ion collisions, as a new method to search for GeV-scale dark gauge bosons (gamma' or Z'). Such light mediators are a common feature of light (i.e. low mass) dark matter scenarios, which have been invoked to explain puzzling signals in dark matter indirect and direct detection experiments. First we show that a light gamma' or Z' will generate a resonant enhancement of the dilepton spectrum produced thermally by the QGP, at an energy corresponding to the dark gauge boson mass. Secondly, using data from the PHENIX experiment, we are able to set an upper limit on the combined coupling of this new gauge boson to quarks and leptons (independently of their vectorial or axial nature) chi_q chi_e < 10^(-3) at the 95% confidence level for a gauge boson mass in the range 1.5 - 2.5 GeV. This result complements previous searches for new light gauge bosons and probes a new region of the parameter space, particularly interesting in the case of non-universal couplings to quarks and leptons. Prospects for the discovery of such a boson by the ALICE collaboration are also discussed.

Theoretical Procedures and the effect on PDFs and $α_S(M_Z^2)$

I consider the effect on partons distribution functions (PDFs) of changes in the theoretical procedure used in a PDF fit. I consider using the 3-flavour fixed flavour number scheme instead of the standard general mass variable flavour number scheme used in the MSTW analysis. This results in the light quarks increasing at most $x$ values, the gluon distribution becoming softer at high values of $x$ and larger at small $x$, and the coupling constant $α_S(M_Z^2)$ falling, particularly at NNLO. The fit quality also deteriorates.I also consider lowering the kinematic cut on $W^2$ for DIS data and introducing higher twist terms which are fit to data. This results in much smaller effects on both PDFs and $α_S(M_Z^2)$, with changes generally smaller than uncertainties, except for quarks at very high $x$. I show that the fixed flavour scheme and variable flavour scheme structure functions differ significantly for $x \sim 0.01$ at high $Q^2$. I demonstrate that in the fixed flavour scheme there is a slow convergence of large logarithmic terms of the form $(α_S\ln(Q^2/m_c^2))^n$ in this regime. I conclude that some major differences in PDF sets are largely due to the choice of flavour scheme used.

Higher Order Corrections to the Trilinear Higgs Self-Couplings in the Real NMSSM

After the discovery of a Higgs-like boson by the LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS, it is of crucial importance to determine its properties in order to not only identify it as the boson responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking but also to clarify the question if it is a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson or the Higgs particle of some extension beyond the SM as {\it e.g.} supersymmetry. In this context, the precise prediction of the Higgs parameters as masses and couplings play a crucial role for the proper distinction between different models. In extension of previous works on the loop-corrected Higgs boson masses of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the SM (NMSSM), we present here the calculation of the loop-corrected trilinear NMSSM Higgs self-couplings. The loop corrections turn out to have a substantial impact on the decay widths of Higgs-to-Higgs decays and on the production cross section of Higgs pairs via gluon fusion. They are therefore indispensable for the correct interpretation of the experimental Higgs results.

Investigation of the $B_c\rightarrow χ_{c2} l \barν $ transition via QCD sum rules

We calculate the transition form factors of the semileptonic $B_c\rightarrow χ_{c2} l \barν $ in the framework of QCD sum rules taking into account the two-gluon condensate corrections. Using the obtained results of form factors we estimate the decay widths and branching ratios related to this transition at all lepton channels. A comparison of the obtained results with the predictions of other non-perturbative approaches are also made. The orders of branching ratios for different lepton channels indicate that the $B_c\rightarrow χ_{c2} l \barν $ transition can be studied at LHC using the collected or future data.

Snowmass whitepaper: Exploring natural SUSY via direct and indirect detection of higgsino-like WIMPs

Supersymmetric models with low electroweak fine-tuning contain light higgsinos with mass not too far from m_h\simeq 125 GeV, while other sparticles can be much heavier. In the R-parity conserving MSSM, the lightest neutralino is then a higgsino-like WIMP (albeit with non-negligible gaugino components), with thermal relic density well below measured values. This leaves room for axions (or other, perhaps not as well motivated, stable particles) to function as co-dark matter particles. The local WIMP abundance is then expected to be below standard estimates, and direct and indirect detection rates must be accordingly rescaled. We calculate rescaled direct and indirect higgsino-like WIMP detection rates in SUSY models that fulfil the electroweak naturalness condition. In spite of the rescaling, we find that ton-scale noble liquid detectors can probe the entire higgsino-like WIMP parameter space, so that these experiments should either discover WIMPs or exclude the concept of electroweak naturalness in R-parity conserving natural SUSY models. Prospects for spin-dependent or indirect detection are more limited due in part to the rescaling effect.

Hadronic Freeze-Out in A+A Collisions meets the Lattice QCD Parton-Hadron Transition Line

We analyze hadrochemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS and LHC energies. Employing the UrQMD hybrid transport model we study the effects of the final hadron/resonance expansion phase on the hadron multiplicities established at hadronization. The bulk meson yields freeze out directly at hadronization whereas the baryon-antibaryon sector is subject to significant alterations, due to annihilation and regeneration processes. We quantify the latter changes by survival factors for each species which are applied to modify the statistical model predictions for the data. The modified SM analysis recovers the hadronization points, which coincide with the recent lattice QCD predictions of the parton-hadron transition line at finite baryochemical potential.

Oscillations of factorial cumulants to factorial moments ratio from an eikonal approach

We study the factorial moments (Fq), the factorial cumulants (Kq) and the ratio of Kq to Fq (Hq = Kq=Fq) in pp/pp collisions using an updated approach, in which the multiplicity distribution is related to the eikonal function. The QCD inspired eikonal model adopted contains contributions of quark-quark, quark-gluon and gluon-gluon interactions. Our work shows that the approach can reproduce the collision energy dependence of the Fq moments, correctly predicts that the first minimum of the Hq lies around q = 5 and qualitatively reproduces the oscillations of the Hq moments, as shown in the experimental data and predicted by QCD at preasymptotic energy. The result of this study seems to indicate that the Hq oscillations are manifestation of semihard component in the multiparticle production process. Predictions for multiplicity distribution and Hq moments at the LHC energy of 14 TeV are presented.

The high-scale SUSY seesaw: LHC vs low energy

In this contribution we outline the correlation between intergenerational slepton mass splittings and low energy lepton flavour violation in supersymmetric type-I and type-III seesaws, and illustrate how the combination of these two sets of observables could strengthen or disfavour a high-scale seesaw as the explanation of neutrino masses and mixings. This contribution summarises part of the analysis presented in arXiv:1007.4833 and arXiv:1104.3962.

Heavy states of hadron string as weak interacting massive particles for Dark Matter

Massive states (of order 10 Gev and more) of hadron string (with scale 1 Gev) can have very small coupling constants with usual baryons of the Universe. Corresponding mean times for them are found to be order and even more than the age of the Universe. They are proposed as possible candidates for weak interacting massive particles (WIMP) of Dark Matter.

Field redefinition and renormalisability in scalar field theories

We have addressed the issue of field redefinition in connection with renormalisability. Our study is restricted to theories of interacting scalar fields. We have, in particular, shown that if a theory is renormalisable in the usual power-counting sense then it remains renormalisable in the same sense after a change of variables. This is due to the use of the powerful method of the background field expansion. In the case of a single complex sclar field, it turns out that the determination of the counter-terms is much simpler when polar coordinates are used. We illustate this by carrying out a one-loop calculation in the latter case.

Complex Spinors and Unified Theories

In this paper delivered by Murray Gell-Mann at the Stony Brook Supergravity Workshop in 1979, several paths to unification are discussed, from N=8 supergravity to $SU_5$, $SO_{10}$, and $E_6$. Generalizations of $SO_{10}$ to spinor representations of larger groups are introduced. A natural mechanism for generating tiny neutrino masses is proposed in the context of $SO_{10}$, and finally, focus on $SU_3$ rather than $SU_2$ or $SO_3$ family symmetries is noted.
