A simple model of many-body localization

We study a simple and tractable model of many-body localization. The main idea is to take a renormalization group perspective in which local entanglement is removed to reach a product state. The model is built from a random local unitary which implements a real space renormalization procedure and a fixed point Hamiltonian with random exponentially decaying interactions. We prove that every energy eigenstate is localized, that energy is not transported, and argue that despite being fine tuned, the model is stable to perturbations. We also show that every energy eigenstate obeys an area law for entanglement entropy and we consider the dynamics of entanglement entropy under perturbations. In the case of extensive pertubations we recover a logarithmic growth of entanglement observed in recent numerical simulations.

Complementarity and Classical Limit of Quantum Mechanics: Energy Measurement aspects

In the present contribution we discuss the role of experimental limitations in the classical limit problem. We studied some simple models and found that Quantum Mechanics does not re-produce classical mechanical predictions, unless we consider the experimental limitations ruled by uncertainty principle. We have shown that the discrete nature of energy levels of integrable systems can be accessed by classical measurements. We have defined a precise limit for this procedure. It may be used as a tool to define the classical limit as far as the discrete spectra of integrable systems are concerned. If a diffusive environment is considered, we conclude that the "lifetime" of discreteness is approximately $1/κ$ ($κ$ is the diffusion constant), thus it was possible to relate the classical limit of a spectra with the action of an environment and experimental resolution.

Direct derivation of microcanonical ensemble average from many-particle quantum mechanics

Starting from the quantum mechanics for $N$ particles, we show that we can directly derive the microcanonical ensemble average of the physical quantity $A$ by using only the long time average and the equal probability assumption for the equal energy states. The system is considered to be embedded in the outer world and we describe them in terms of the density matrix method.

Quantum Will: Determinism meets Quantum Mechanics

We present a brief non-technical introduction to the standing discussion on the relation between Quantum Mechanics and Determinism. Quantum Mechanics inherent randomness in the measurement process is sometimes presented as a door to explain free will. We argue against this interpretation. The possibility that Quantum Mechanics provides just an effective description of Nature which is only valid at our low-energy scales is also discussed.

Polyestimate: instantaneous open source surface code analysis

The surface code is highly practical, enabling arbitrarily reliable quantum computation given a 2-D nearest-neighbor coupled array of qubits with gate error rates below approximately 1%. We describe an open source library, Polyestimate, enabling a user with no knowledge of the surface code to specify realistic physical quantum gate error models and obtain logical error rate estimates. Functions allowing the user to specify simple depolarizing error rates for each gate have also been included. Every effort has been made to make this library user-friendly.

Wavefunction reality, indeterminate properties and degrees of presence

The degree-of-presence (of the quantum system) concept, accompanying that of the wavefunction-reality postulate, is introduced and studied in two ways. To begin with, an incomplete exposition of the present author's views is given. Subsequently, a short historical and philosophical review of answers to the question about the meaning of indeterminate individual-system probabilities is presented from the literature. It is done in the form of a carefully selected collage of quotations mostly with polemic comments by the present author and with further elaboration of his point of view. The advocated notion of 'degree of presence' generalizes the intuitively most easily acceptable idea of 'delocalization' in (roughly called)wavelike behavior of a quantum system.

Inequalities for nonnegative numbers and information properties

We discuss some inequalities for N nonnegative numbers. We use these inequalities to obtain known inequalities for probability distributions and new entropic and information inequalities for quantum tomograms of qudit states. The inequalities characterize the degree of quantum correlations in addition to noncontextuality and quantum discord. We use the subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for qudit tomographic-probability distributions depending on the unitary-group parameters in order to derive new inequalities for Shannon, Renyi, and Tsallis entropies of spin states.

Role of the orthogonal group in construction of osp(1|2n) representations

It is well known that the symmetric group has an important role (via Young tableaux formalism) both in labelling of the representations of the unitary group and in construction of the corresponding basis vectors (in the tensor product of the defining representations). We show that orthogonal group has a very similar role in the context of positive energy representations of osp(1|2n,R). In the language of parabose algebra, we essentially solve the long standing problem of reducibility of Green's ansatz representations.

Entanglement improves classical control

Electronic devices all around us contain classical control circuits. Such circuits consist of a network of controllers which can read and write signals to wires of the circuit with the goal to minimize the cost function of the circuit's output signal. Here, we propose the use of shared entanglement between controllers as a resource to improve the performance of otherwise purely classical control circuits. We study a well-known example from the classical control literature and demonstrate that allowing two controllers to share entanglement improves their ability to control. More precisely, we exhibit a family of circuits in which the the cost function using entanglement stays constant, but the minimal cost function without entanglement grows arbitrarily large. This demonstrates that entanglement can be a powerful resource in a classical control circuit.

Can a wormhole be interpreted as an EPR pair?

Recently, Maldacena and Susskind arXiv:1306.0533 and Jensen and Karch arXiv:1307.1132 argued that a wormhole can be interpreted as an EPR pair. We point out that a convincing justification of such an interpretation would require a quantitative evidence that correlations between two ends of the wormhole are equal to those between the members of the EPR pair. As long as the existing results do not contain such evidence, the interpretation of wormhole as an EPR pair does not seem justified.

Effect of Quantum correlation on Perfect K pair Quantum Network Coding

We find a protocol transmitting K quantum states crossly in the quantum networks with K pair sender-receiver and one bottleneck channels only with sharing quantum correlations between senders. In these networks senders want to multi cast perfect quantum states to receivers. Perfect send on the quantum networks is impossible just using some additional resources like quantum correlation. This protocol has been used maximum entangled states and Quantum Discord which is best indicator of the quantum nature of the correlation to sharing between senders. At first, to send perfect K states in quantum network applied some maximum entanglement states to teleport quantum states, Enistein - Podolsky - Rosen (EPR) states as simple and two qubit states and Grrenberger- Horne - Zeilinger (GHZ) states and W states as kinds of three qubit states. Then reached that there is no difference between sharing these maximum entanglement states and must send same amount of classical bits in bottleneck channel. In the second part of this paper of sharing Quantum Correlation (quantum discord) perfect send of two quantum states is possible in the Butterfly network with fidelity equal one.

On the Physical Origin of the Anomalous Magnetic Moment of Electron

A simple physical insight into the origin of the magnetic moment anomaly of electron is presented. This approach is based on the assumption that the electromagnetic mass of the electron due to the electric field generated by electron charge in the exterior of the sphere of radius half of the Compton wavelength of the electron, does not contribute to the magnetic moment of the electron. This explanation is compatible with the well-known quantum electrodynamics approach. A formula is derived, which is similar to that obtained by quantum electrodynamics calculus of one loop contribution to anomalous part of the magnetic moment.

Long range interactions of ytterbium in mixed quantum gases

We present methods for accurate evaluation of van der Waals coefficients of dimers with excited atoms that have a strong decay channel. We calculate C_6 coefficients for the Yb-Yb 1S_0+ 3P_{0,1}, 3P_0+3P_0 and Yb-Rb 3P_1+5s, 1S_0+ 5p_{1/2} dimers and C_8 coefficients for the Yb-Yb 1S_0+1S_0, 1S_0+3P_1 and Yb-Rb 1S_0+5s dimers. We evaluate uncertainties of all properties.

Metrology with entangled coherent states - a quantum scaling paradox

There has been much interest in developing phase estimation schemes which beat the so-called Heisenberg limit, i.e., for which the phase resolution scales better than 1/n, where n is a measure of resources such as the average photon number or the number of atomic qubits. In particular, a number of nonlinear schemes have been proposed for which the resolution appears to scale as 1/n^k or even exp(-n), based on optimising the quantum Cramer-Rao bound. Such schemes include the use of entangled coherent states. However, it may be shown that the average root mean square errors of the proposed schemes (averaged over any prior distribution of phase shifts), cannot beat the Heisenberg limit, and that simple estimation schemes based on entangled coherent states cannot scale better than 1/n^{1/4}. This paradox is related to the role of 'bias' in Cramer-Rao bounds, and is only partially ameliorated via iterative implementations of the proposed schemes. The results are based on new information-theoretic bounds for the average information gain and error of any phase estimation scheme, and generalise to estimates of shifts generated by any operator having discrete eigenvalues.

Accurate calculation of the bound states of Hellmann potential

Bound states of the Hellmann potential, which is a superposition of the attractive Coulomb ($-A/r$) and the Yukawa ($Be^{-Cr}/r$) potential, are calculated by using a generalized pseudospectral method. Energy eigenvalues accurate up to thirteen to fourteen significant figures, and densities are obtained through a nonuniform, optimal spatial discretization of the radial Schrödinger equation. Both ground and excited states are reported for arbitrary values of the potential parameters covering a wide range of interaction. Calculations have been made for higher states as well as for stronger couplings. Some new states are reported here for the first time, which could be useful for future works. The present results are significantly improved in accuracy over all other existing literature values and offers a simple, accurate and efficient scheme for these and other singular potentials in quantum mechanics.

Causal signal transmission by quantum fields -- V: Generalised Keldysh rotations and electromagnetic response of the Dirac sea

The connection between real-time quantum field theory (RTQFT) [see, e.g., A.\ Kamenev and A.\ Levchenko, Advances in Physics {58} (2009) 197] and phase-space techniques [E.\ Wolf and L.\ Mandel, {\em Optical Coherence and Quantum Optics} (Cambridge, 1995)] is investigated. The Keldysh rotation that forms the basis of RTQFT is shown to be a phase-space mapping of the quantum system based on the symmetric (Weyl) ordering. Following this observation, we define generalised Keldysh rotations based on the class of operator orderings introduced by Cahill and Glauber [Phys.\ Rev.\ {177} (1969) 1882]. Each rotation is a phase-space mapping, generalising the corresponding ordering from free to interacting fields. In particular, response transformation [L.P.\ and S.S., Ann.\ Phys. (N.Y.) {323} (2008) 1989] extends the normal ordering of free-field operators to the time-normal ordering of Heisenberg\ operators. Structural properties of the response transformation, such as its association with the nonlinear quantum response problem and the related causality properties, hold for all generalised Keldysh rotations. Furthermore, we argue that response transformation is especially suited for RTQFT formulation of spatial, in particular, relativistic, problems, because it extends cancellation of zero-point fluctuations, characteristic of the normal ordering, to interacting fields. As an example, we consider quantised electromagnetic\ field in the Dirac sea. In the time-normally-ordered representation, dynamics of the field looks essentially classical (fields radiated by currents), without any contribution from zero-point fluctuations. For comparison, we calculate zero-point fluctuations of the interacting electromagnetic\ field under orderings other than time-normal. The resulting expression is physically inconsistent: it does not obey the Lorentz condition, nor Maxwell's equations.
