Event-by-event generation of electromagnetic fields in heavy-ion collisions

We compute the electromagnetic fields generated in heavy-ion collisions by using the HIJING model. Although after averaging over many events only the magnetic field perpendicular to the reaction plane is sizable, we find very strong magnetic and electric fields both parallel and perpendicular to the reaction plane on the event-by-event basis. We study the time evolution and the spatial distribution of these fields. Especially, the electromagnetic response of the quark-gluon plasma can give non-trivial evolution of the electromagnetic fields. The implications of the strong electromagnetic fields on the hadronic observables are also discussed.

Pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions in chiral effective field theory: next-to-next-to-leading order contributions

A complete calculation of the pion-nucleon loops that contribute to the transition operator for $NN\to NNπ$ up-to-and-including next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO) in chiral effective field theory near threshold is presented. The evaluation is based on the so-called momentum counting scheme, which takes into account the relatively large momentum of the initial nucleons inherent in pion-production reactions. We show that the significant cancellations between the loops found at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the earlier studies are also operative at N$^2$LO. In particular, the $1/m_N$ corrections (with $m_N$ being the nucleon mass) to loop diagrams cancel at N$^2$LO, as do the contributions of the pion loops involving the low-energy constants $c_i$, i=1...4. In contrast to the NLO calculation however, the cancellation of loops at N$^2$LO is incomplete, yielding a non-vanishing contribution to the transition amplitude. Together with the one-pion exchange tree-level operators, the loop contributions provide the long-range part of the production operator. Finally, we discuss the phenomenological implications of these findings. In particular, we find that the amplitudes generated by the N$^2$LO pion loops yield contributions comparable in size with the most important phenomenological heavy-meson exchange amplitudes.

Chiral three-nucleon force at N^4LO I: Longest-range contributions

We derive the sub-subleading two-pion exchange contributions to the three-nucleon force which appear at next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. In order to determine the low-energy constants, a complete analysis of pion-nucleon scattering at the subleading-loop order in the heavy-baryon expansion is carried out utilizing the power counting scheme employed in the derivation of the nuclear forces. We discuss the convergence of the chiral expansion for this particular three-nucleon force topology and give the values of the low-energy constants which provide the most realistic description of the three-nucleon force when the chiral expansion is truncated at next-to-next-to-leading order.

Charmonium production from nonequilibrium charm and anticharm quarks in quark-gluon plasma

Parameterizing the charm and anticharm quark momentum distributions by the Tsallis distribution, we study the nonequilibrium effect on the charmonium production rate in a quark-gluon plasma up to the next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. We find that nonequilibrium charm and anticharm quarks suppress the charmonium production rate compared to that from equilibrated ones. We further show that the suppression factor calculated with the charm quark relaxation time, which has been frequently used in the literature, is close to our results.

Nucleon electromagnetic form factors and electroexcitation of low lying nucleon resonances in a light-front relativistic quark model

We utilize a light-front relativistic quark model (LF RQM) to predict the 3q core contribution to the electroexcitation amplitudes for the Delta(1232)P33, N(1440)P11, N(1520)D13, and N(1535)S11 up to Q2= 12GeV2. The parameters of the model have been specified via description of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors in the approach that combines 3q and pion-cloud contributions in the LF dynamics.

Jets, Bulk Matter, and their Interaction in Heavy Ion Collisions at Several TeV

We discuss a theoretical scheme that accounts for bulk matter, jets, and the interaction between the two. The aim is a complete description of particle production at all transverse momentum ($p_{t}$) scales. In this picture, the hard initial scatterings result in mainly longitudinal flux tubes, with transversely moving pieces carrying the $p_{t}$ of the partons from hard scatterings. These flux tubes constitute eventually both bulk matter (which thermalizes and flows) and jets. We introduce a criterion based on parton energy loss to decide whether a given string segment contributes to the bulk or leaves the matter to end up as a jet of hadrons. Essentially low $p_{t}$ segments from inside the volume will constitute the bulk, high $p_{t}$ segments (or segments very close to the surface) contribute to the jets. The latter ones appear after the usual flux tube breaking via q-qbar production (Schwinger mechanism). Interesting is the transition region: Intermediate $p_{t}$ segments produced inside the matter close to the surface but having enough energy to escape, are supposed to pick up q-qbar pairs from the thermal matter rather than creating them via the Schwinger mechanism. This represents a communication between jets and the flowing bulk matter (fluid-jet interaction). Also very important is the interaction between jet hadrons and the soft hadrons from the fluid freeze-out. We employ the new picture to investigate Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV. We discuss the centrality and $p_{t}$ dependence of particle production and long range dihadron correlations at small and large $p_{t}$.

Quasi-elastic neutrino charged-current scattering off medium-heavy nuclei: 40Ca and 40Ar

The charged-current quasi-elastic scattering of muon neutrinos on calcium and argon targets is calculated for neutrino energy up to 2.8 GeV. The calculations are done within the framework of the relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation, which was earlier successfully applied to describe electron-nucleus data. The model is first tested against experimental data for electron scattering off calcium and then it is applied to calculate (anti)neutrino cross sections on 40Ca and 40Ar. We show that reduced exclusive cross sections for neutrino and electron scattering are similar. A significant nuclear model dependence of both inclusive and total cross sections for energy about 1 GeV was found. From the comparison of the (anti)neutrino differential and total cross sections per (proton)neutron, calculated for the carbon, oxygen, and argon targets it is evident that the cross sections decrease slowly with the mass-number of the target due to nuclear effects.

Parity Violation in nd Interactions

We calculate the parity-violating amplitudes in the nd interaction with pionless effective field theory to LO. Matching the parity violating low energy constants to the DDH coefficients we make numerical predictions for parity-violating observables. In particular we give predictions for the spin rotation of a neutron on a deuteron target, and target and beam asymmetries in nd scattering.

Local Projections of Low-Momentum Potentials

Nuclear interactions evolved via renormalization group methods to lower resolution become increasingly non-local (off-diagonal in coordinate space) as they are softened. This inhibits both the development of intuition about the interactions and their use with some methods for solving the quantum many-body problem. By applying "local projections", a softened interaction can be reduced to a local effective interaction plus a non-local residual interaction. At the two-body level, a local projection after similarity renormalization group (SRG) evolution manifests the elimination of short-range repulsive cores and the flow toward universal low-momentum interactions. The SRG residual interaction is found to be relatively weak at low energy, which motivates a perturbative treatment.

Exclusive coherent production of heavy vector mesons in nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC

Heavy nuclei at collider energies are a source of high energy Weizsaecker-Williams photons. This photon flux may be utilized to study high energy photon-nucleus interactions. Here we concentrate on the coherent diffractive production of heavy vector mesons on nuclear targets and show how it probes the unintegrated glue of the nucleus in the saturation domain. We present predictions for rapidity distributions of exclusive coherent J/Psi and Upsilon mesons which can be measured by the ALICE experiment at the LHC.

Amplitude analysis of gamma n --> pi- p data above 1 GeV

We report a new extraction of nucleon resonance couplings using pi- photoproduction cross sections on the neutron. The world database for the process gamma n --> pi- p above 1 GeV has quadrupled with the addition of new differential cross sections from the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab in Hall B. Differential cross sections from CLAS have been improved with a new final-state interaction determination using a diagramatic technique taking into account the NN and piN final-state interaction amplitudes. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations. With the addition of these new cross sections, significant changes are seen in the high-energy behavior of the SAID cross sections and amplitudes.

Final State Interactions Effects in Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions

Final State Interactions effects are discussed in the context of Monte Carlo simulations of neutrino-nucleus interactions. A role of Formation Time is explained and several models describing this effect are compared. Various observables which are sensitive to FSI effects are reviewed including pion-nucleus interaction and hadron yields in backward hemisphere. NuWro Monte Carlo neutrino event generator is described and its ability to understand neutral current $π^0$ production data in $\sim 1$ GeV neutrino flux experiments is demonstrated.

Giant Monopole Resonances and nuclear incompressibilities studied for the zero-range and separable pairing interactions

Background: Following the 2007 precise measurements of monopole strengths in tin isotopes, there has been a continuous theoretical effort to obtain a precise description of the experimental results. Up to now, there is no satisfactory explanation of why the tin nuclei appear to be significantly softer than 208Pb. Purpose: We determine the influence of finite-range and separable pairing interactions on monopole strength functions in semi-magic nuclei. Methods: We employ self-consistently the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation on top of spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov solutions. We use the Arnoldi method to solve the linear-response problem with pairing. Results: We found that the difference between centroids of Giant Monopole Resonances measured in lead and tin (about 1 MeV) always turns out to be overestimated by about 100%. We also found that the volume incompressibility, obtained by adjusting the liquid-drop expression to microscopic results, is significantly larger than the infinite-matter incompressibility. Conclusions: The zero-range and separable pairing forces cannot induce modifications of monopole strength functions in tin to match experimental data.

Neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering as a probe of neutron density distributions

Neutrino-nucleus coherent elastic scattering provides a theoretically appealing way to measure the neutron part of nuclear form factors. Using an expansion of form factors into moments, we show that neutrinos from stopped pions can probe not only the second moment of the form factor (the neutron radius) but also the fourth moment. Using simple Monte Carlo techniques for argon, germanium, and xenon detectors of 3.5 tonnes, 1.5 tonnes, and 300 kg, respectively, we show that the neutron radii can be found with an uncertainty of a few percent when near a neutrino flux of $3\times10^{7}$ neutrinos/cm$^{2}$/s. If the normalization of the neutrino flux is known independently, one can determine the moments accurately enough to discriminate among the predictions of various nuclear energy functionals.

Examining a reduced jet-medium coupling in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

Recent data on the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ of jet fragments in 2.76 ATeV Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) indicate that the jet-medium coupling in a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is reduced at LHC energies and not compatible with the coupling deduced from data at the Relativistic Hadron Collider (RHIC). We estimate the reduction factor from a combined fit to the available data on $R_{AA}(\sqrt{s},p_T,b)$ and the elliptic flow $v_2(\sqrt{s},p_T,b)$ at $\sqrt{s}=0.2,2.76$ ATeV over a transverse momentum range $p_T$ 10-100 GeV and a broad impact parameter, b, range. We use a simple analytic "polytrope" model ($dE/dx=- κE^{a} x^z T^{c}$) to investigate the dynamical jet-energy loss model dependence. Varying a=0-1 interpolates between weakly-coupled and strongly-coupled models of jet-energy dependence while z=0-2 covers a wide range of possible jet-path dependencies from elastic and radiative to holographic string mechanisms. Our fit to LHC data indicates an approximate 40% reduction of the coupling $κ$ from RHIC to LHC and excludes energy-loss models characterized by a jet-energy exponent with a>1/3. In particular, the rapid rise of $R_{AA}$ with $p_T$>10 GeV combined with the slow variation of the asymptotic $v_2(p_T)$ at the LHC rules out popular exponential geometric optics models (a=1). The LHC data are compatible with $0\leq a\leq 1/3$ pQCD-like energy-loss models where the jet-medium coupling is reduced by approximately 10% between RHIC and LHC.

New method for measuring longitudinal fuctuations and directed flow in ultrarelativistic heavy ion reactions

It has been shown in recent ALICE@LHC measurements that the odd flow harmonics, in particular a directed flow, v1, occurred to be weak and dominated by random fluctuations. In this work we propose a new method, which makes the measurements more sensitive to the flow patterns showing global collective symmetries. We demonstrate how the longitudinal center of mass rapidity fluctuations can be identified, and then the collective flow analysis can be performed in the event-by-event center of mass frame. Such a method can be very effective in separating the flow patterns originating from random fluctuations, and the flow patterns originating from the global symmetry of the initial state.

Two-particle interferometry for the sources undergoing first-order QCD phase transition in high energy heavy ion collisions

We investigate the two-particle interferometry for the particle-emitting sources which undergo the first-order phase transition from the quark-gluon plasma with a finite baryon chemical potential to hadron resonance gas. The effects of source expansion, lifetime, and particle absorption on the transverse interferometry radii $R_{\rm out}$ and $R_{\rm side}$ are examined. We find that the emission durations of the particles become large when the system is initially located at the boundary between the mixed phase and the quark-gluon plasma. In this case, the difference between the radii $R_{\rm out}$ and $R_{\rm side}$ increases with the transverse momentum of the particle pair significantly. The ratio of $\sqrt{R_{\rm out}^2 -R_{\rm side}^2}$ to the transverse velocity of the pair is an observable for the enhancement of the emission duration.

Hydrodynamics at large baryon densities: Understanding proton vs. anti-proton v_2 and other puzzles

We study the importance of the initial state, baryon stopping and baryon number transport for the dynamical evolution of a strongly interacting system produced in heavy ion collisions. We employ a hybrid model, which combines the fluid dynamical evolution of the fireball with a transport treatment for the initial state and the final hadronic phase. We present results for collisions at beam energies from sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7 to 200 GeV. We study various observables such as the centrality dependent freeze out parameters, the non-monotonic behavior of effective slope parameter parameter with particle mass as well as the apparent difference in particle and anti-particle elliptic flow. Our results are in reasonable agreement with the available data. We find that the propagation of the baryon-number current in the hydrodynamic evolution as well as the transport treatment of the hadronic phase are essential for reproducing the experimental data.
