Green's function for longitudinal shear of a periodic laminate

The reasoning is a slight extension of that employed in my article [1] and its further development [2]. A formal solution to the title problem is presented for a general periodic laminate and its application for the construction of "effective constitutive relations" is developed. Its implementation in detail will be reported separately.

Simple Harmonic Motion:Geometrical Solutions of Equations of Motions

Conventionally while we talk about geometry associated with a simple harmonic oscillator, we draw a circle with a radius equal to the amplitude of Oscillator and imagine a particle moving along the perimeter with a frequency same as that of Oscillator and then the x coordinate of the position of the particle gives the value of the displacement of the Oscillator. Here we discuss another kind of diagram (polar plot) depicting dynamics of Oscillator and come up with a solution to boundary and initial value problem geometrically.

Yao's millionaires' problem and decoy-based public key encryption by classical physics

We use various laws of classical physics to offer several solutions of Yao's millionaires' problem without using any one-way functions. We also describe several informationally secure public key encryption protocols, i.e., protocols secure against passive computationally unbounded adversary. This introduces a new paradigm of decoy-based cryptography, as opposed to "traditional" complexity-based cryptography. In particular, our protocols do not employ any one-way functions.

Generalized Thomson problem in arbitrary dimensions and non-euclidean geometries

Systems of identical particles with equal charge are studied under a special type of confinement. These classical particles are free to move inside some convex region S and on the boundary of it $Ω$ (the $S^{d-1}-$ sphere, in our case). We shall show how particles arrange themselves under the sole action of the Coulomb repulsion in many dimensions in the usual Euclidean space, therefore generalizing the so called Thomson problem to many dimensions. Also, we explore how the problem varies when non-Euclidean geometries are considered. We shall see that optimal configurations in all cases possess a high degree of symmetry, regardless of the concomitant dimension or geometry.

Causality in Classical Physics

Classical physics encompasses the study of physical phenomena which ranges from local (a point) to nonlocal (a region) in space and/or time. We discuss the concept of spatial and temporal nonlocality. However, one of the likely implications pertaining to nonlocality is non-causality. We study causality in the context of phenomena involving nonlocality. An appropriate domain of space and time which preserves causality is identified.

Notes on the flexible manipulator

The existence of solutions to the boundary tracking of the displacement at one end of a linear Timoshenko beam is discussed on the basis of the Cauchy problem with time and space interchanged.

Analysis of the bending behaviour of flax based reinforcements used in shape forming

The bending behaviour of woven perform was investigated in order to better understand the formation of some defects during sheet forming such as wrinkling and tow buckling. The fabric composition considering hybrid and pure flax fabrics as well as some test conditions like relative humidity were examined. On the one hand, the results show a drop of the bending stiffness with flax/PLA commingled fabric. On the other hand, the study points out that moisture enhances the bending rigidity especially in the case of pure flax fabric. However, an excess of humidity, for instance 100% relative humidity, leads to an opposite effect.

Triple scale analysis of periodic solutions and resonance of some asymmetric non linear vibrating systems

We consider {\it small solutions} of a vibrating mechanical system with smooth non-linearities for which we provide an approximate solution by using a triple scale analysis; a rigorous proof of convergence of the triple scale method is included; for the forced response, a stability result is needed in order to prove convergence in a neighbourhood of a primary resonance. The amplitude of the response with respect to the frequency forcing is described and it is related to the frequency of a free periodic vibration.

A Non-Pythagorean Musical Scale Based on Logarithms

A new musical scale devised by the author, based on natural logarithms, is described. Most of the logarithmic pitches bear no correspondence to the twelve tones of the ancient tuning system attributed to Pythagoras, based on ratios of whole numbers, nor to the chromatic tones of scales in equal temperament used widely in the modern era. Logarithms obey a special arithmetic compared to whole and rational numbers, which can be heard in beat frequencies between tones of the scale, suggesting extended harmonic possibilities by incorporating the beat frequencies into compositions. The author uses the broad term "non-Pythagorean" to describe the logarithmic musical scale, as the ratios of pitches are usually irrational numbers.

Oscillatory decay of the survival probability of activated diffusion across a limit cycle

Activated escape of a Brownian particle from the domain of attraction of a stable focus over a limit cycle exhibits non-Kramers behavior: it is non-Poissonian. When the attractor is moved closer to the boundary oscillations can be discerned in the survival probability. We show that these oscillations are due to complex-valued higher order eigenvalues of the Fokker-Planck operator, which we compute explicitly in the limit of small noise. We also show that in this limit the period of the oscillations is the winding number of the activated stochastic process. These peak probability oscillations are not related to stochastic resonance and should be detectable in planar dynamical systems with the topology described here.

Where is magnetic anisotropy field pointing to?

The desired result of magnetic anisotropy investigations is the determination of value(s) of various anisotropy constant(s). This is sometimes difficult, especially when the precise knowledge of saturation magnetization is required, as it happens in ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies. In such cases we usually resort to `trick' and fit our experimental data to the quantity called \emph{anisotropy field}, which is strictly proportional to the ratio of the searched anisotropy constant and saturation magnetization. Yet, this quantity is scalar, simply a number, and is therefore of little value for modeling or simulations of the magnetostatic or micromagnetic structures. Here we show how to `translate' the values of magnetic anisotropy constants into the complete vector of magnetic anisotropy field. Our derivation is rigorous and covers the most often encountered cases, from uniaxial to cubic anisotropy.

A Beam Theory Consistent with Three-Dimensional Thermo-Elasticity

We propose a model for thermo-elastic beams, consistent with the theory of linear three-dimensional thermo-elasticity and deduced by a suitable version of the Principle of Virtual Powers. Dimensional reduction is achieved by postulating convenient \textit{a priori} representations for mechanical and thermal displacements, the latter playing the role of an additional kinetic variable. Such representations are regarded as internal constraints, some involving the first, others the second gradient of deformation and thermal displacements; these constraints are maintained by reactive stresses and hyper-stresses of the type occurring in non-simple elastic materials of grade two, and by reactive entropy influxes and hyper-influxes.

Electrodynamics acceleration of electrical dipoles

This article considers the acceleration of electric dipoles consisting of thin metal plates and dielectric (barium titanate). The dipoles are of a cylindrical shape with a diameter of the cylinder two centimeters and length one centimeter. Capacity of the parallel-plate capacitor is three hundred picofarads and it is charged up to the voltage of two hundred eighty kilovolts. Pre-acceleration of the electric dipoles till velocity one kilometer per second is reached by the gas-dynamic method. The finite acceleration is produced in a spiral waveguide, where the pulse is travelling with voltage amplitude seven hundreds kilovolts and power one hundred twenty-five megawatts. This pulse travels via the spiral waveguide and accelerates the injected electric dipoles in the longitudinal direction till the finite velocity eight and a half kilometers per second over length seven hundred and seventy meters.

Producing acoustic 'Frozen Waves': Simulated experiments with diffraction/attenuation resistant beams, in lossy media

The so-called Localized Waves (LW), and the "Frozen Waves" (FW), have arisen significant attention in the areas of Optics and Ultrasound, because of their surprising energy localization properties. The LWs resist the effects of diffraction for large distances, and possess an interesting self-reconstruction (self-healing) property, after obstacles with size smaller than the antenna's; while the FWs, a sub-class of theirs, offer the possibility of arbitrarily modeling the field longitudinal intensity pattern inside a prefixed interval, for instance 0 < z < L, of the wave propagation axis. More specifically, the FWs are localized fields "at rest", that is, with a static envelope (within which only the carrier wave propagates), and can be endowed moreover with a high transverse localization. In this paper we investigate by simulated experiments, various cases of generation of ultrasonic FW fields, with frequency f_o = 1 MHz in a water-like medium, taking account of the effects of attenuation. We present results of FWs for distances up to L=80 mm, in attenuating media with absorption coefficients alpha in the range 70 < alpha < 170 dB/m. Such simulated FW fields are constructed by using a procedure developed by us, via appropriate finite superpositions of monochromatic ultrasonic Bessel beams. We pay due attention to the selection of the FW parameters, constrained by the tight restrictions imposed by experimental Acoustics, and to some practical implications of the transducer design. The energy localization properties of the Frozen Waves can find application even in many medical apparatus, such as bistouries or acoustic tweezers, and for treatment of diseased tissues (in particular, for the destruction of tumor cells, without affecting the surrounding tissues; besides for a safe kidney stone shuttering, etcetera).

A map between Galilean relativity and special relativity

A map is discussed that connects, in 1+1 dimensions, Galilei's relativity to Einstein's special relativity. By means of this map it is possible to derive special-relativistic formulas from the corresponding Galilean ones. Beyond being interesting on its own, this map is also significant with respect to a recent debate on the extension of relativistic symmetries to the Planck scale (especially in the framework of the so-called doubly special relativity). The map in fact provides an explicit example of how can be misleading to interpret a mathematical correspondence between two relativity schemes as an argument in favor of their physical equivalence.

The radiation problem from a vertical short dipole antenna above flat and lossy ground. Novel formulation in the spectral domain with closed form analytical solution in the high frequency regime

In this paper we consider the problem of radiation from a vertical short Hertzian dipole above flat lossy ground, which represents the well known in the literature Sommerfeld radiation problem. The problem is formulated in a novel spectral domain approach, and by inverse three dimensional Fourier transformation the expressions for the received electric and magnetic field in the physical space are derived as one dimensional integrals over the radial component of wavevector, in cylindrical coordinates. Subsequent use of the Stationary Phase Method in the high frequency regime yields closed form analytical solutions for the received EM field vectors, which coincide with the corresponding reflected EM field originating from the image point. In this way, we conclude that the so called in the literature space wave, i.e. line of sight plus reflected EM field, represents the total solution of the Sommerfeld problem in the high frequency regime, in which case the surface wave can be ignored. Finally, numerical results in the high frequency regime are presented in this paper, in comparison with corresponding numerical results based on Norton solution of the problem, i.e. space and surface waves.
