Seeding ice growth at ambient conditions using nano graphene oxide

Water wetting on a hydrophobic surface at ambient conditions is disallowed by the nonpolar nature of the surface and high vapor pressure of water. However, the presence of sub-millimeter sized hydrophilic patches allows the waxy wings of desert beetles to become wettable by morning mist. Here, we show that a sprinkle of graphene oxide nanoflakes (nanoGOs) is effective in condensing water nanodroplets and seeding ice epitaxy on graphite at ambient conditions. By controlling relative humidity and nanoGO density, we are able to study the formation of a complete ice wetting layer on a time scale of 20 hours. This presents an unprecedented opportunity to visualize ice nucleation and growth in real time using non-contact atomic force microscopy. The stages of crystallization, as proposed by Ostwald in 1897, is fully unfolded at a microscopic level for the first time. We obtain real-time imaging of sequential phase transition from amorphous ice to a transient cubic ice Ic stage and finally to the stable hexagonal ice Ih. Most interestingly, we discover that ice nucleation and growth can be influenced by modifying the functional groups of nanoGO, and by intermolecular hydrogen-bonding between nanoGOs. This affords a strategy to control heterogenous ice nucleation and snow crystal formation.

Computer Simulation of 3-D Finite-Volume Liquid Transport in Fibrous Materials: a Physical Model for Ink Seepage into Paper

A physical model for the simulation ink/paper interaction at the mesoscopic scale is developed. It is based on the modified Ising model, and is generalized to consider the restriction of the finite-volume of ink and also its dynamic seepage. This allows the model to obtain the ink distribution within the paper volume. At the mesoscopic scale, the paper is modeled using a discretized fiber structure. The ink distribution is obtained by solving its equivalent optimization problem, which is solved using a modified genetic algorithm, along with a new boundary condition and the quasi-linear technique. The model is able to simulate the finite-volume distribution of ink.

Stable Spin State Analysis of Fe, Co, Ni-modified Graphene-ribbon

Magnetic graphene-ribbon is a candidate for realizing future ultra high density 100 tera bit/inch2 class data storage media. In order to increase the saturation magnetization, first principles DFT analysis was done for Fe, Co, Ni-modified zigzag edge graphene-ribbon. Typical unit cell is [C32H2Fe1], [C32H2Co1] and [C32H2Ni1] respectively. Most stable spin state was Sz=4/2 for Fe-modified case, whereas Sz=3/2 for Co-case and Sz=2/2 for Ni-case. Magnetic moment of Fe,Co, and Ni were 3.63, 2.49 and 1.26 μB, which can be explained by the Hund-rule considering charge donation to neighboring carbons. Band calculation shows half-metal like structure with a large band gap (in Co-case, 0.55eV) for up-spin, whereas very small gap (0.05eV) for down-spin, which will be useful for many featured application like information storage, spin filter and magneto-resistance devices. Dual layer Fe-modified ribbon shows a tube like curved structure, which may suggest a carbon nanotube creation by Fe catalyst.

PVC composite internal process of current-voltage time delay formation and conductivity levels lifetimes origin

In the previously described model of interpreting the numerous results in the switching states of the conduction in the films of PVC composites [1,2] was noted the need to involve hopping mechanism and percolation theory to explain the phenomenon of giant jumps conductivity, just as was done for the interpretation of such jumps for disordered semiconductor films. It was also shown that to explain the totality of spontaneous and stimulated transitions between states of the conduction in PVC composites requires the existence of an internal process that is able to produce a fixed observable current - voltage delay and switching electrical conductivity levels lifetime. In this paper one of the possible relaxation processes that lead to the emergence of the delay time, and the occurrence of spontaneous and stimulated transitions sample conductivity of nanocomposites PVC is presented. In particular, as a mechanism for determining time delay and lifetimes of the conduction states the reaction of dehydrochlorination is proposed, which should be reversible in case when HCl molecules separated from macromolecule physically can not "travel" far from "their place" in the macromolecule, as it just takes place within a local PVC free volume. In a frame of developed model all previously observed and called "anomalous" electrical phenomena receive a reasonable and predictable behavior.

Electric moulding of dispersed lipid nanotubes into a nanofluidic device

Hydrophilic nanotubes formed by lipid molecules have potential applications as platforms for chemical or biological events occurring in an attolitre volume inside a hollow cylinder. Here, we have integrated the lipid nanotubes (LNTs) by applying an AC electric field via plug-in electrode needles placed above a substrate. The off-chip assembly method has the on-demand adjustability of an electrode configuration, enabling the dispersed LNT to be electrically moulded into a separate film of parallel LNT arrays in one-step. The fluorescence resonance energy transfer technique as well as the digital microscopy visualised the overall filling of gold nanoparticles up to the inner capacity of an LNT film by capillary action, thereby showing the potential of this flexible film for use as a high-throughput nanofluidic device where not only is the endo-signalling and product in each LNT multiplied but also the encapsulated objects are efficiently transported and reacted.

Local Electron Field Emission Study of Two-dimensional Carbon

A systematic field-emission study has been carried out on different types of two-dimensional carbons in ultrahigh vacuum with the cathode-anode distance ranging from near-contact to about 124 nm. An analytical model has been developed to explain the increase of field enhancement factor with the cathode-anode distance. Good agreement has been achieved between the calculation results and experimental data, including those reported in literature. The work provides useful insights into the characteristics of field emission from two-dimensional carbon.

Critical phenomena in the bifurcation line's perspective

On the phase diagram of a system undergoing a continuous phase transition of the second order, three lines, hyper-surfaces, convergent into the critical point feature prominently: the ordered and disordered phases in the thermodynamic limit, and a third line, extending into a domain of finite-size systems, defined by the bifurcation of the distribution of the order parameter. Unlike critical phenomena in the thermodynamic limit devoid of known thermodynamic potential and described rather by the conformal symmetry, in finite-size systems near the bifurcation line an explicit Hamiltonian for the zero-mode of the order parameter is found. It bears the impress of the universality class of the critical point in terms of the two critical exponents: $β$ and $ν$.

Large Enhancement of the Photoluminescence Emission of Photoexcited Undoped GaAs Quantum Wells Induced by an Intense Single-Cycle Terahertz Pulse

Intense terahetz (THz) pulses induce a photoluminescence (PL) flash from undoped high-quality GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells under continuous wave laser excitation. The number of excitons increases 10000-fold from that of the steady state under only laser excitation. The THz electric field dependence and the relaxation dynamics of the PL flash intensity suggest that the strong electric field of the THz pulse ionizes impurity states during the one-picosecond period of the THz pulse and release carriers from a giant reservoir containing impurity states in the AlGaAs layers.

Electron Transport Properties of Graphene-Graphyne-Graphene Transistors: First Principles Study

A novel nanoelectronic device is constructed by graphyne that is robustly connected between graphene electrodes, where graphyne is composed of hexagonal carbon rings and carbon chains. Owing to similarities between the bond lengths and unit cell shapes of graphene and graphyne, they have perfectly matched interfacial structure at periodic locations, enabling the facilitated charge transfer and heterostructural stability. Using a combined nonequilibrium Green's function and density functional theory formalism, we have systematically investigated the electron transport properties of graphene-graphyne-graphene field effect transistors (FETs) by varying the graphyne size and the carbon chain length. These devices exhibit excellent switching behaviors with ON/OFF ratios on the order of 10^2-10^3. The ON/OFF ratio increases as either of the graphyne size or the carbon chain length increases. Noticeably, these devices sustain good FET features even at the small graphyne size of 8.5 A, yielding ON/OFF ratio of 650 and transmission energy gap of 0.8 eV, which suggests their potential applications for fabricating highly-integrated circuits at the level comparable to molecular devices. Their boron-nitrides analogues show similar qualitative behaviors for the changes of the graphyne size and bias voltage, but they show higher ON/OFF ratios for the smaller chain length in contrast to graphyne TFTs.

Electron-Phonon Coupling on the Surface of Topological Insulators

Topological insulators (TIs) are materials that have a bulk electronic band gap like an ordinary insulator but have protected conducting states on their surface. One of the most interesting properties of TIs is their spin helicity, whereby the spin is locked normal to the wave vector of the surface electronic state. The topological surface states should be very stable in TIs, since these spin-textured surface states are robust against spin-independent backscattering. Scattering from defects and other lattice imperfections is possible provided the spin is not completely flipped. However, the quality of TI crystals can be controlled by careful growth, whereas phonons will exist in even the most perfect crystals. Consequently, electron-phonon coupling (EPC) should be the dominant scattering mechanism for surface electronic states at finite temperatures. Hence, the study of EPC in TIs is of exceptional importance in assessing any potential applications. In this article both experimental and theoretical studies of the EPC on the surface of TIs are reviewed, with the contents mainly focused on the typical strong three dimensional TIs, such as Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3.

Comment on "Pt magnetic polarization on Y3Fe5O12 and magnetotransport characteristics"

In a recent Letter [Y.M. Lu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 147207 (2013)], Lu et al. reported on "ferromagneticlike transport properties" of thin films of Pt, deposited ex situ via sputtering on the ferrimagnetic insulator Y3Fe5O12. The authors found a magnetoresistance in Pt displaying a hysteresis corresponding to the coercive field of Y3Fe5O12, consistent with the findings of other groups. While the latter interpreted their data in terms of the recently proposed spin-Hall magnetoresistance, Lu et al. attributed their observation to a magnetic proximity effect. To support this interpretation, they measured the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Pt L2,3 edges from a Pt/Y3Fe5O12 sample with a Pt thickness of 1.5 nm and derived an average induced magnetic moment of 0.054 Bohr magnetons per Pt atom. This is contradictory to the results of our previous comprehensive XMCD study of three different Pt/Y3Fe5O12 samples with Pt thicknesses of 3, 7, and 10 nm from which we identified an upper limit of (0.003 +/- 0.001) Bohr magnetons per Pt [Geprägs et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 101, 262407 (2012), arXiv:1211.0916].

Optical Properties and Raman Studies of Partially Edge Terminated Vertically Aligned Nanocrystalline MoS2 Thin Film

The optical and vibrational properties of nanocrystalline thin films of MoS2, comprised of a mixture of edge terminated vertically aligned (ETVA) and (001)-oriented regions, on large insulating substrates are reported. From high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), the average size of ETVA nanocrystals were ~5 nm and each nanocrystal consisted of only 3 to 5 monolayers of MoS2. The films were highly transparent (~80%) but the percent of transmittance decreased as the energy of the incident light approached to the band gap. Additionally, weak excitonic peaks were observed both in the absorption and transmission spectra. The room temperature Raman study showed that both the E12g and A1g modes were significantly broader, and a few additional Raman modes were observed when compared to bulk MoS2. The broadening of the A1g mode was analyzed using the phonon-confinement model and the calculated particle size was in good agreement with TEM observations. Moreover, the temperature coefficient of the A1g mode was estimated from the temperature dependent Raman studies.

Elasticity effects on the stability of growing films

It is shown how the combination of atomic deposition and nonlinear diffusion may lead, below a critical temperature, to the growth of nonuniform layers on a substrate. The dynamics of such a system is of the Cahn-Hilliard type, supplemented by reaction terms representing adsorption-desorption processes. The instability of uniform layers leads to the formation of nanostructures which correspond to regular spatial variations of substrate coverage. Since coverage inhomogeneities generate internal stresses, the coupling between coverage evolution and film elasticity fields is also considered, for film thickness below the critical thickness for misfit dislocation nucleation. It is shown that this coupling is destabilizing and favors nanostructure formation. It also favors square planforms which could compete, and even dominate over the haxagonal or stripe nanostructures induced by coverage dynamics alone

Tunneling Tuned Spin Modulations in Ultrathin Topological Insulator Films

Quantitative understanding of the relationship between quantum tunneling and Fermi surface spin polarization is key to device design using topological insulator surface states. By using spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with p-polarized light in topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films across the metal-to-insulator transition, we observe that for a given film thickness, the spin polarization is large for momenta far from the center of the surface Brillouin zone. In addition, the polarization decreases significantly with enhanced tunneling realized systematically in thin insulating films, whereas magnitude of the polarization saturates to the bulk limit faster at larger wavevectors in thicker metallic films. Our theoretical model calculations capture this delicate relationship between quantum tunneling and Fermi surface spin polarization. Our results suggest that the polarization current can be tuned to zero in thin insulating films forming the basis for a future spin-switch nano-device.

Theory of Native Orientational Pinning in Quantum Hall Nematics

The orientation of the electron-nematic states discovered in the quantum Hall regime of GaAs $[001]$ growth-direction quantum wells is pinned by a weak native source of anisotropy. In this Letter we explain that this property, which has remained mysterious over more than a decade of research, follows from the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. The hard transport direction of the nematic state is determined by the relative sign of the Rashba and Dresselhaus coefficients, and coincides with either the $[110]$ or the $[1\bar{1}0]$ crystallographic direction. Our theoretical estimate of the pinning energy is in agreement with experimental studies of the competition between native pinning and intentional pinning by an in-plane magnetic field.

Analytical expression for the harmonic Hall voltages in evaluating spin orbit torques

Solid understanding of current induced torques is key to the development of current and voltage controlled magnetization dynamics in ultrathin magnetic heterostructures. A versatile technique is needed to evaluate such torques in various systems. Here we examine the adiabatic (low frequency) harmonic Hall voltage measurement that has been recently developed to study current induced effective field that originate from the spin orbit effects. We analytically derive a form that can be used to evaluate the harmonic Hall voltages and extract relevant parameters in two representative systems, i.e. out of plane and in-plane magnetized systems. Contributions from the anomalous Hall and planar Hall effects are considered.

Molecular simulation of nano-dispersed fluid phases

Fluid phase equilibria involving nano-dispersed phases, where at least one of the coexisting phases is confined to a small volume, are investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. Complementing previous studies on nanoscopic droplets, simulation volumes containing a nanoscopic gas bubble surrounded by a subsaturated liquid phase under tension, i.e. at negative pressure, are conducted in the canonical ensemble. The boundary conditions are chosen such that the phase equilibrium at the curved interface is thermodynamically stable. Two distinct size-dependent effects are found: Curvature induces a subsaturation of the system, leading to a smaller liquid density. For the gas in the centre of the bubble, the small diameter has an additional obverse effect, increasing its density. The curvature dependence of the surface tension is discussed by evaluating average radial density profiles to obtain the excess equimolar radius, which is found to be positive, corresponding to a negative Tolman length.

Dielectric Environment Effect on Carrier Mobility of Graphene Double-Layer Structure

We have theoretically studied the dielectric environment effect on the charged-impurity-limited carrier mobility of graphene double-layer structure (GDLS) on the basis of the Boltzmann transport theory. In this system, two graphene layers are separated by a dielectric barrier layer. It is pointed out that the carrier mobility strongly depends on the dielectric constant of the barrier layer when the interlayer distance becomes larger than the inverse of the Fermi wave vector. Moreover, the conditions to improve the charged-impurity-limited carrier mobility of the GDLS are evaluated.
