A Parametric Study of Extended-MHD Drift Tearing

The linear drift-tearing mode is analyzed for different regimes of the plasma-$β$, ion-skin-depth parameter space with an unreduced, extended-MHD model. New dispersion relations are found at moderate plasma $β$ and previous drift-tearing results are classified as applicable at small plasma $β$. The drift stabilization of the mode in the regimes varies from non-existent/weak to complete. As the diamagnetic-drift frequency is proportional to the plasma $β$, verification exercises with unreduced, extended-MHD models in the small plasma-$β$ regimes are impractical. The new dispersion relations in the moderate plasma-$β$ regimes are used to verify the extended-MHD implementation of the NIMROD code [C. R. Sovinec et al., J. Comput. Phys. 195, 355 (2004)]. Given the small boundary-layer skin depth, discussion of the validity of the first-order finite-Larmour-radius model is presented.

Construcción de un reactor de nitruración por plasma y simulación de la distribución de temperaturas

Ion nitriding and ion carburising by plasma discharges are promising techniques in order to modify the surface of austenitic steels. Plasma treatments improve mechanical properties, e.g., hardness and wear resistance. Indeed, these techniques do not change the natural austenitic properties, like corrosion resistance. Hidden parameters of the system are very important in order to do a good characterization and a good experimental reproducibility. In this work a new cathode design has been done and it is placed in a new plasma reactor. The electric field edge effect has been discarded in the austenitic samples thanks to a special lodging procedure. After an experimental validation of this new set-up, a numerical simulation has been carried out. Temperature distribution has been analyzed using the cathode-molecular nitrogen collision method. Under these assumptions, reactor cooling is a key issue. This simulation has been done after the resolution of the Laplace equation with the parallel Jacobi method. Finally, using optical emission spectroscopy it has been verified that the heat transfer mechanism is the conduction and the experimental data have been compared with simulation data.

Electromagnetic Wave Propagation In The Plasma Layer of A Reentry Vehicle

The ability to simulate a reentry vehicle plasma layer and the radio wave interaction with that layer, is crucial to the design of aerospace vehicles when the analysis of radio communication blackout is required. Results of aerothermal heating, plasma generation and electromagnetic wave propagation over a reentry vehicle are presented in this paper. Simulation of a magnetic window radio communication blackout mitigation method is successfully demonstrated.

What is Generic Structure of the 3D Null-Point Magnetic Reconnection?

The probability of occurrence of various topological configurations of the 3D null-point reconnection in a random magnetic field is studied. It is found that the non-axisymmetrical six-tail configuration (or "improper radial null") should play the dominant role; while all other types of reconnection, in particular, the axially-symmetric fan-like structures (or "proper radial nulls") are realized with a much less probability. A characteristic feature of the six-tail configuration is that at the sufficiently large scales it is approximately reduced to the well-known 2D X-type structure; and this explains why the 2D models of reconnection usually work quite well.

Cluster virial expansion and electron-hydrogen molecule scattering

The equation of state of partially ionized hydrogen plasma is considered with special focus on the contribution of $e-\rm H_2$ interaction. Within a cluster virial expansion, the Beth-Uhlenbeck formula is applied to infer the contribution of bound and scattering states to the temperature dependent second virial coefficient. The scattering states are calculated using the phase expansion method with the polarization interaction model that incorporates experimental data for the $e-\rm H_2$ scattering cross section. We present results for the scattering phase shifts, differential scattering cross sections, the second virial coefficient due to $e-\rm H_2$ interaction. The influence of this interaction on the composition of the partially ionized hydrogen plasma is confined to the parameter range where both the $\rm H_2$ and the free electron components are abundant.

Modeling radio communication blackout and blackout mitigation in hypersonic vehicles

A procedure for the modeling and analysis of radio communication blackout of hypersonic vehicles is presented. The weakly ionized plasma generated around the surface of a hypersonic reentry vehicle is simulated using full Navier-Stokes equations in multi-species single fluid form. A seven species air chemistry model is used to compute the individual species densities in air including ionization - plasma densities are compared with experiment. The electromagnetic wave's interaction with the plasma layer is modeled using multi-fluid equations for fluid transport and full Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic fields. The multi-fluid solver is verified for a whistler wave propagating through a slab. First principles radio communication blackout over a hypersonic vehicle is demonstrated along with a simple blackout mitigation scheme using a magnetic window.

Optimisation of the pointing stability of laser-wakefield accelerated electron beams

Laser-wakefield acceleration is a promising technique for the next generation of ultra-compact, high-energy particle accelerators. However, for a meaningful use of laser-driven particle beams it is necessary that they present a high degree of pointing stability in order to be injected into transport lines and further acceleration stages. Here we show a comprehensive experimental study of the main factors limiting the pointing stability of laser-wakefield accelerated electron beams. It is shown that gas-cells provide a much more stable electron generation axis, if compared to gas-jet targets, virtually regardless of the gas density used. A sub-mrad shot-to-shot fluctuation in pointing is measured and a consistent non-zero offset of the electron axis in respect to the laser propagation axis is found to be solely related to a residual angular dispersion introduced by the laser compression system and can be used as a precise diagnostic tool for compression oprtimisation in chirped pulse amplified lasers.

Many-particle quantum hydrodynamics: Basic principles and fundamental applications

We present a detailed derivation of the continuity, Euler, and energy balance equations from many particle Schrodinger equation. Interparticle interaction is explicitly considered as the Coulomb interaction. We show the QHD equations in a form suitable for low dimensional systems. The QHD equations in the cylindrical and spherical coordinates are presented as well. We present a method of non-linear Schrodinger equation derivation from the QHD equations. We describe a method of exchange interaction calculation for two- and three-dimensional quantum plasmas. We discuss explicit form and area of applicability of equations of state for 1D, 2D, and 3D degenerate electrons. We explicitly consider equations of state for degenerate electron gas in an external magnetic field. Considering QHD equations in cylindrical coordinates we focus our attention on the quantum part of the inertia forces and contribution of the quantum Bohm potential to the spectrum of quantum cylindrical waves. Collective excitations of 2DEG on spherical surface are considered. Equation of state for degenerate 2DEG on a spherical surface is obtained. We apply the QHD equations to small amplitude collective excitations in linear regime of QHD equations. We consider the Langmuir waves in 1D, 2D, and 3D quantum plasmas including the exchange Coulomb interaction. Considering quantum plasmas located in an external magnetic field we focus our attention on longitudinal waves propagating perpendicular to the external magnetic field. We present this consideration for 1D, 2D, and 3D plasmas. We discuss dependence of the exchange interaction on rate of polarization of spins in the external magnetic field. We include dependence of the pressure of degenerate electrons on the strength of the external magnetic field via the change of occupation of quantum states at application of an external magnetic field.

Cycloid motions of grains in unmagnetized dust plasma

Hypocycloid and epicycloid motions of irregular grain (pine pollen) are observed for the first time in unmagnetized dust plasma in 2D horizontal plane. Hypocycloid motions occur both inside and outside the glass ring which confines the grain. Epicycloid motion only appears outside the glass ring. Cuspate cycloid motions, circle motion, and stationary grain are also observed. All these motions are related with both the initial conditions of dropped grain and the discharge parameters. The Magnus force originated from the spin of the irregular grain is confirmed by comparison experiments with regular microspheres, and it plays important role on these (cuspate) cycloid motions. The observed complex motions are explained in term of force analysis and numerical simulations. Periodical change of the cyclotron radius as the grain travelling results in the (cuspate) cycloid motions. Our results show that the (cuspate) cycloid motions are distinctive features of irregular grain immersed in plasma.

Ultrarelativistic regime in the propagation of an ultrastrong, femtosecond laser pulse in plasmas

The interaction of a multi-Petawatt, pancake-shaped laser pulse with an unmagnetized plasma is studied analytically and numerically in the regime of fully relativistic electron jitter velocities and in the context of the laser wakefield acceleration scheme. The study is applied to the specifications available at present time, or planned for the near future, of the Ti:Sa Frascati Laser for Acceleration and Multidisciplinary Experiments (FLAME) in Frascati. Novel nonlinear equation is derived by a three-timescale description, with an intermediate timescale associated with the nonlinear phase of the laser wave. They describe on an equal footing both the strong and moderate laser intensity regimes, pertinent to the core and the edges of the pulse. These have fundamentally different dispersive properties since, in the core, the electrons are almost completely expelled by a very strong ponderomotive force and the electromagnetic wave packet is imbedded in a vacuum channel and has (almost) linear properties, while at the pulse edges the laser amplitude is smaller and the wave is dispersive. The nonlinear phase provides a transition to a nondispersive electromagnetic wave at large intensities and the saturation of the previously known nonlocal cubic nonlinearity, without the violation of the imposed scaling laws. The temporal evolution of the laser pulse is studied by the numerical solution of the model equations in a two-dimensional geometry, with the spot diameter presently used in the self-injection test experiment (SITE) with FLAME. The most stable initial pulse length is found to be around 1 $μ$m, which is several times shorter than presently available. A stretching of the laser pulse is observed, followed by the development of a vacuum channel and a very large electrostatic wake potential, as well as the bending of the laser wave front.

Effects of the Second Harmonic and Plasma Shaping on the Geodesic Acoustic Mode

The effects of second harmonics of the density and temperature perturbations on the linear Geodesic Acoustic Mode (GAM) frequency and non-linear generation of the GAM are investigated, using a fluid model. We show that the second harmonics contribute to the frequency through the density gradient scale length and the wave number of the GAM. In addition, the linear frequency of the GAM is generally increased by coupling to the higher harmonic.

On the exact solutions of (magneto)hydrodynamic systems and the superposition principles of nonlinear helical waves

The principles of restricted superposition of circularly polarized arbitrary-amplitude waves for several hydrodynamic type models are illustrated systematically with helical representation in a unified sense. It is shown that the only general modes satisfying arbitrary-amplitude superposition to kill the generic nonlinearity are the mono-wavelength homochiral Beltrami mode and the one-dimensional-two-component stratified vorticity mode, which we call the XYz flow/wave; while, there are other special superposition principles for some specific cases. We try to remark on the possible connections with the geo- and/or astro-physical fluid and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence issues, such as the rotating turbulence, dynamo and solar atmosphere turbulence, especially with the introduction of disorder locally frozen in some (randomly distributed) space-time regions. Recent disagreements about exact solutions of Hall and fully two-fluid magnetohydrodynamics are also settled down by such a treatment. This work complements, by studying the modes which completely kill the triadic interactions or the nonlinearities, previous studies on the thermalization purely from the triadic interactions, and in turn offers alternative perspectives of the nonlinearities.

Coaxial Microwave Plasmas in Argon: Radial Contraction, Self-Organization and more Exotic Phenomena

A coaxial microwave plasma setup was designed for investigation by optical and laser diagnostics. The plasma is sustained by two microwave power sources located at both ends of a coaxial line. This allows generating an axially homogeneous glow discharge at low pressure. For increasing pressures, this glow-like mode is found to be unstable and various self-organized patterns are observed including finger-like structures which can be sustained after the visible end of the plasma column.

Using the local gyrokinetic code, GS2, to investigate global ITG modes in tokamaks. (I) s-$α$ model with profile and flow shear effects

This paper combines results from a local gyrokinetic code with analytical theory to reconstruct the global eigenmode structure of the linearly unstable ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) mode with adiabatic electrons. The simulations presented here employ the s-$α$ tokamak equilibrium model. Local gyrokinetic calculations, using GS2 have been performed over a range of radial surfaces, x, and for ballooning phase angle, p, in the range -$π {\leq} p {\leqπ}$, to map out the complex local mode frequency, ${Ω_0(x, p) = ω_0(x, p) + iγ_0(x, p)}$. Assuming a quadratic radial profile for the drive, namely ${η_i = L_n/L_T}$, (holding constant all other equilibrium profiles such as safety factor, magnetic shear etc.), ${Ω_0(x, p)}$ has a stationary point. The reconstructed global mode then sits on the outboard mid plane of the tokamak plasma, and is known as a conventional or isolated mode, with global growth rate, $γ$ ~ Max[${γ_0(x, p)}$], where ${γ_0(x, p)}$ is the local growth rate. Taking the radial variation in other equilibrium profiles (e.g safety factor q(x)) into account, removes the stationary point in ${Ω_0(x, p)}$ and results in a mode that peaks slightly away from the outboard mid-plane with a reduced global growth rate. Finally, the influence of flow shear has also been investigated through a Doppler shift, ${ω_0 \rightarrow ω_0 + nΩ^{\prime}x}$, where n is the toroidal mode number and ${Ω^{\prime}}$ incorporates the effect of flow shear. The equilibrium profile variation introduces an asymmetry to the growth rate spectrum with respect to the sign of ${Ω^{\prime}}$, consistent with recent global gyrokinetic calculations.

Stopping power: Effect of the projectile deceleration

The stopping force is the force exerted on a charged projectile by the excess charge of the wake generated by the projectile in the surrounding plasma. Since the wake does not instantly adjust to the projectile velocity, the stopping force should be affected by the projectile deceleration caused by the stopping force itself. We address this effect by deriving the corresponding correction to the stopping force in a cold plasma. We find that if the projectile is an ion, the correction is small when the stopping force is due to the plasma electrons, but can be significant when the stopping force is due to the ions.

A Review of Wave Packet Molecular Dynamics

Warm dense matter systems created in the laboratory are highly dynamical. In such cases electron dynamics is often needed to accurately simulate the evolution and properties of the system. Large systems force one to make simple approximations enabling computationally feasibility. Wave packet molecular dynamics (WPMD) provides a simple framework for simulating time-dependent quantum plasmas. Here, this method is reviewed. The different variants of WPMD are shown and compared and their validity is discussed.

The transition between kinetic and hydrodynamic regimes of the one-dimensional two-stream instability is numerically analyzed, and the correction coefficients to the well-known textbook formulae are calculated. The approximate expressions are shown to overestimate the growth rate several times in a wide parameter area.
